ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. He has given him secret advice, he has prevailed on him by underhand or secret means. நூறுநாளோதியாறுநாள்விடத்தீரும். The traces of learning made in a hundred days will be effaced by indolence in six. ஓதியிறைக்க, inf. To sprinkle holy water. ஓதியுடைக்க, inf. To break a cocoanut with appropriate incantations. ஓதிவிட, inf. To cease reading. ஓதினநீர், s. Holy water, consecrated water. ஓதுவான், s. A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. To become weak in the limps, by walking, sickness, age, &c. கால்தோல்--காற்றோல் s. [prov.] Leathern defences for toddy-drawers feet in climbing, மரமேறுவோர் காலிலிடுந்தோல். கால்நகம்--கானகம் s. Toe-nail. கால்நடை--கானடை. v. noun. Walking, going on foot--as distinct from riding and driving. 2. s. Sheep and goats; oxen, cattle, ஆடுமாடுகள் அவனுக்குமாட்டில் நூறுகால்நடையுண்டு. He has no-hundred oxen. கால்நடையாய், adv. On foot, a-foot. கால்நடையாய்ப் பிரயாணம்போக, inf. To travel on foot. கால்நோக்கு--கானோக்கு s. One-fourth aspect of a planet, being one of the four aspects. கால்பாவவில்லை. The feet do not seek the ground--recoiling from going. கால்பிடிக்க, inf. To fall at one's feet to ask a favor. 2. Dance or sport of the deity--as the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe are considered by Hindu philosophers, திருக் கூத்து. 4. Expression or exhibition of the feelings of the soul in its conscious states, as manifested in the actions and organic functions of the body, according to Hindu psychologists, ஆத்துமசேட்டை. 5. Frolicking, leaping and frisking about, like young boys and girls, விளையாட்டு. 6. Display, pomp, parade, &c.--as viewed by ascetics, பிரபஞ்சநடிப்பு. 7. A strange event or phenomenon, நூதனசெய்கை. 8. Presumption, assumption, vanity--as of young persons--one new in office, &c., spoken in contempt, கோலாகலம். 9. A droll or ludicrous action or performance--as a pantomime, &c., பரிகாசக்கூத்து. 1. (fig. little used.) The instigating or moving cause of an action, தூண்டுகாரணம். கூத்துக்குமீசைசிரைக்கவா. Why shave off the mustaches for mere play; i. e. why do a thing without an object? ஏதேனுங்கூத்துநடக்கும். [prov.] Some disastrous event will happen--said after a bad omen. நாலுநாட்கூத்து. A four day's dance-spoken of worldly prosperity, elevation to office, &c. கூத்தன், s. Dancer, actor, performer, comedian, &c., நாடகன். 2. Soul, life, spirit--as the directing cause of the various corporeal functions and actions, உயிர், ஆத்துமா. (நாலடி.) 3. The deity--as the operating cause in the universe, கட வுள். (p.) கூத்தாட, inf. To dance or play, to exhibit pranks, to take a part in play, நடனஞ்செய்ய. 2. To persist in an improper request, &c., சோலிபண்ண. 3. To be elated by promotion, wealth, &c.; to assume too much, &c., பெருமைகாட்ட. 4. (little used.) To act merely for form's sake, in religion, civilities, mourning, &c., ஒப்புக்குச்செய்ய. கூத்தாடி, s. (fem. கூத்தாடிச்சி.) A dancer, player, an actor, a comedian, நடன். 2. A pole-dancer, கழைக்கூத்தன். கூத்தாட்டு--கூத்தாட்டம், v. noun. Dancing, acting, playing, &c., நடிப்பு. கூத்தாட்டுச்சிலம்பம் படைவெட்டுக்குதவாது. The fencing of the actor will not do in battle. கூத்தி--கூத்திச்சி, s. A female actor or dancer; a dancing girl, நாடகப்பெண். 2. A courtezan, a strumpet, a prostitute, வேசி. 3. A concubine, கூத்தியார். கூத்துக்களரி, s. The area or hall for play; a ball room; a theatre; a circus, &c., நடனசாலை. கூத்துக்காரன், s. (fem. கூத்துக்காரி.) An actor, a dancer, கூத்தாடுவோன். 2. A dancing master, கூத்தாட்டுவோன். 3. A buffoon; a ludicrous, comical person; a mimie, விகடக்காரன். கூத்துப்பயிலிடம், s. A dancing school; a place where dancing is practised. கூத்துப்பாட்டு, s. Dancing tunes, and songs. கூத்துவகை--கூத்தின்விகற்பம், s. The two divisions of dancing, commonly by woman. 1. தேசிகம், modes of dancing in different countries. 2. மார்க்கம், modes of dancing--as laid down in the shastras. கூத்துப்பண்ண, inf. To make fun, sport, &c. 2. To do a droll, funny, action. 3. To confound; to derange. கூத்துவிட, inf. To introduce the actors in a play. 2. kompu (p. 146) s. The horn of a beast, விலங்கின்கொம்பு. 2. A branch, மரக்கொம்பு. 3. The foot-stalk or stem of a flower, பூங் கொம்பு. (p.) 4. A narrow stick; a staff, pole, கோல். 5. A musical instrument; a cornet, horn, ஊதுகொம்பு. 6. A tusk of an elephant or hog, யானைமுதலியவற்றின்தந்தம். 7. The curllike symbol in certain compound characters--as in நெ, பொ, &c., அக்கரத்தின்கோடு. 8. The bent front pole of a palankeen, சிவி கையின்கொம்பு. 9. (fig.) Eminence, greatness, மேன்மை. 1. (loc.) The outlet of a tank, ஏரிக்கோடி. பறக்குங்குருவிக்கு இருக்குங்கொம்புதெரியாது, பரதே சிக்குத்தங்குமிடந்தெரியாது. The migrating bird knows not the branch on which it may roost; and the pilgrim known not his halting place. பழுத்தபழங்கொம்பிலிராது. The ripe fruit remains not on the branch; i. e., at the appointed time, the event will happen. பிடித்தகொம்புமொடிந்துமிதித்தகொம்புமுறிந்தாற்போ லானேன். I was like a man in whose hands and under whose feet the branches had given way; i. e. I was without support. கொம்புசுற்றிக்காற்றடிக்கிறது. The wind blows and whirls around every branch. ஏதுகொம்புமுளைத்துவிட்டதோ. Have his horns grown? used when a person shows pride,insubordination, &c. கொம்படிக்க, inf. To butt--as oxen, buffaloes, rams, goats, &c. 2. (fig.) To assume authority, to be supercilious. கொம்பனையாள்--கொம்பனாள், s. She whose waist is as tender and narrow as the stem of flower. (p.) கொம்பன், s. A tusked elephant or other beast. 2. A kind of cholera or small-pox. கொம்பன்சுறா, s. The sword fish, (lit.) the horned shark. கொம்பாள், s. [loc.] A man looking out from a tree. Sometimes கொம்பத்தாள். கொம்புத்தேன், s. [prov கொப்பாந் தேன்.] Honey formed by bees on branches. கொம்புப்பயறு, s. A kind of pulse. கொம்புப்பாகல்--கொம்பன்பாகல். A kind of winding பாகல் creeper. கொம்பாடவிடான். He suffers no one else to take the lead; assumes too much. கொம்பேறிமூர்க்கன்-கொம்பேறிமூக்கன், s. [loc.] A long dangerous snake living in trees. அசைக்கொம்பு--ஆடுகொம்பு--தோற் கொம்பு, s. A moveable horn fixed in the skin. கடைக்கொம்பு--உளிக்கொம்பு, s. Stump of a horn. கவர்க்கொம்பு--கவட்டைக்கொம்பு-கிளைக்கொம்பு, s. A branched horn. திருகுகொம்பு--முறுக்குக்கொம்பு, s. Winding or tortuous horn. மட்டைக்கொம்பு--விரிகொம்பு, s. Horns extended on both sides. முகக்கொம்பு--முன்கொம்பு, s. Horns setting down towards the ground. மோழைக்கொம்பு, s. Horns hindered from growing by being burnt. உச்சிக்கொம்பன், s. A beast with perpendicular horns near together. ஏந்துகொம்பன், s. An elephant with curved tusks. 2. An ox with horns rising abruptly and projecting forward at the points. ஒற்றைக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant with one tusk, the other being broken. 2. Ganésa. See ஒற்றை. கணைக்கொம்பன், s. An ox with stunted horns. கிளிக்கொம்பன், s. See under கிளி. கூடுகொம்பன், s. An ox whose horns come near together at the points. கூர்ங்கொம்பன், s. Sharp-horned ox. கூழைக்கொம்பன், s. An ox with stubbed horns. நாரைக்கொம்பன், s. [prov.] An ox with long white horns. பவளக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant whose tusks resemble coral in color. பிடிக்கொம்பன், s. Short-horned beast. மாடைக்கொம்பன், s. A bullock with horns bent backwards. முத்துக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant whose tusks, in color, resemble pearl. விரிகொம்பன், s. An ox with spreading horns. கொம்புக்காரன், s. Morbid irritation, or exacerbation of any of the three humors of the body, உடம்பெரிச்சல். W. p. 251. KOPA. 5. The cochineal and other insects of the coccus class, இந்திரகோபம். 6. A kind of prepared arsenic, துத்தபாஷாணம். கோபமுங்குறையும். Displeasure and offence. கோபம்பாவம். Anger is sin. கோபக்காரன், s. An irritable, passionate man. கோபங்காட்ட, inf. To be angry, to manifest resentment, to appear displeased. 2. To give place to anger before superiors. 3. To be indolent. கோபங்கொள்ள, inf. To be displeased, to take umbrage at. 2. (fig. prov.) To be inflamed, irritated--as a sore, a wound, &c., to become aggravated--as a disease; to rage--as the sea. கோபஞ்சாதிக்க, inf. To harbor resentment. கோபதாபம், s. Great anger, choler, rage. (c.) கோபமுகம், s. An angry countenance, angry looks. கோபமூள, inf. To be excited, inflamed with anger. 2. To be enraged. கோபமெழுப்ப--கோபமூட்ட, inf. To provoke, to enrage, to incense, to exasperate. கோபம்பாராட்ட, inf. To yield to, or indulge in anger. கோபாக்கினி, s. Hold displeasure, fury, indignation; [ex அக்கினி, fire.] கோபி, s. A passionate, irritable person, one easily enraged; a surly, waspish person, கோபமுடையவன். See கோபிசந்தனம். கோபிஷ்டன், s. A passionate man. தீராக்கோபம், s. Implacable hatred. முன்கோபம், s. Sudden anger from a slight cause, pettishness. 2. Cherished malice. முன்கோபம்பின்னிரக்கம். Soon angry and soon relenting. 61) *

caṉi (p. 173) s. The planet Saturn, the most, malignant, in astrological influence of all the planets, ஓர்கிரகம். 2. Saturday, சனிக்கி ழமை. W. p. 829. S'ANI. 3. (fig.) A person of ill omen whose company is dangerous, சனிபோன்றவன்.--Note. The different positions and influences of the planet are. (1.) அஷ்டமசனி. See under அஷ்டம். (2.) நாலாமிடத்துச்சனி, called also அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி. Saturn in the fourth sign from that of one's birth, where his influence is less malignant. (3.) இரண்டாமிடத்துச்சனி, or பாதச் சனி. Saturn in the sign nest to that in the ascendant, where his influence is indicative of eloquence and oratory. (4.) ஏழ ரையாண்டுச்சனி. Saturn's 7?? years' evil influence called ஏழரை, and divided into three parts, மங்குசனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணச்சனி which see. As saturn is 2?? years in each sign of the zodiac, it occupies 7?? years for three signs, so that a man living ninety years would pass three times through all these periods. See ஏழரை. (5.) பன்னிரண்டாமிடத்துச் சனி. Saturn in the 12th sign from that in the ascendant. (6.) சன்மச்சனி. Saturn in the ascendant. (7.) மகத்துச்சனி. Saturn in the first lunar asterism of Leo called மகம், indicating great calamities. (8.) மீனச்சனி. Saturn in the Pices, considered unpropitious in its influence. இவனெனக்கு மகத்துச்சனிபோலிருக்கிறான். He is a great enemy to me. சனிகழிய--சனியன்றொலைய, inf. To expire or end as any period of saturn's malign influence on a person. 2. To terminate as a cause of calamity, evil, &c. சனிக்கிழமை--சனிவாரம், s. Saturday. சனிக்கிழமைவிரதம், s. [also சனிவிர தம்.] A fast on Saturdays, to avert the evil influences of Saturn, when, before eating, crows, emblems of Saturn, are fed. 2. A fast in honor of Vishnu. சனிபகவான்--சனீச்சுரன், s. The regent of Saturn. சனிபிடித்தல், v. noun. Being seized by Saturn, brought under his malignant influence. 2. (fig.) Being assailed by adverse circumstances, துன்புறுதல். சனிமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing on Saturdays. சனிமூலை, s. The north east, (lit.) Saturn's quarter, வடகிழக்கு. சனியன், s. Saturn the planet. 2. An unlucky person, associating with whom may bring evil. 3. A troublesome person, animal, thing, circumstance, &c. இவன் எனக்குச் சனியனாய் வந்தான். He is a Saturn (an inauspicious person) to me. சனிவேதை, s. The influence of Saturn; pain, சனிதோஷம். (R.) சனிக்காசு, s. A small coin paid to the master, by the scholars, on Saturdays. சனிப்பாட்டு, s. [loc.] A song or poem sung by the boys of a school, near the end of a year, to obtain presents from their parents, and others, for the master. சனியெண்ணெய், s. The oil collected by scholars, from their parents, for their teacher, on Saturdays. 66) *
