Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. eṭṭu (p. 73) கிறேன், எட்டினேன், வேன், எட்ட, v. a. To stretch forth, to reach after, தாவ. 2. [with the dative.] To be obtained, be got, to be caught, அகப்பட. எட்டாதபூதேவனுக்கு. The flower that is out of reach is dedicated to God. [prov.] மனோவாக்குக்கெட்டாதது. What is incomprehensible or unutterable. கைக்கெட்டினதுவாய்க்கெட்டாமற்போயிற்று. The mouth did not get what the hand had reached--I almost got it, but it escaped my grasp. The fates were against me, &c. --spoken in cases of disappointment, &c. கண்ணுக்கெட்டினமட்டும். As far as the eye can see. எனக்கெட்டாது. I cannot reach it. 2. I cannot get it. 2. I cannot comprehend it. கிணற்றுக்கிந்தக்கயிறெட்டாது. This rope is not long enough for the well. எட்ட, inf. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. To stand near a wall, a pillar, &c., in order to over-hear, to way-lay, &c., விசேஷங்கேட்கவொளித்துநிற்க. சுட்டமண்ணும்பச்சைமண்ணுமொட்டாது. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. Will this unjust gain, &c., abide with you? உலகத்தோடொட்டவொழுகல். Acting conformably to the world. (குறள்.) மரத்தோடொட்ட. To hide one's self behind a tree. தோலெல்லாமெலும்போடொட்டிப்போயிற்று..... The skin cleaves to the bones. ஒருவனையொட்டிப்பிழைக்க. To subsist by means of another. அவனைவரவொட்டும். [Contracted in colloquial use to அவன்வரட்டும்.] Let him come. சொல்லவொட்டான். He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. The are of the horizon which comprehends the northern and southern declinations of the sun, moon, &c., being of three divisions called மேடவீதி, இடபவீதி, and மிதுனவீதி. See சூரியவீதி. சூரியசரம், s. As சூரியகலை, 1. சூரியசித்திரம், s. [in astrol.] A subdivision of சூரியபுத்தி. சூரியசித்தாந்தம், s. An astronomical work, ஓர்கணிதநூல். See சித்தாந்தம். சூரியதிசை, s. The reign of the sun, as a planet. See திசை. சூரியதீக்ஷணம்--சூரியதேசசு, s. The radiance or heat of the sun, கடுவெயில். (p.) சூரியநமஸ்காரம்--சூரியநமற்காரம், s. The worship of the sun. 2. Adoration of the sun by sick persons, especially for diseases in the eyes. See நமஸ்காரம். சூரியபகவான்--சூரியநாராயணமூர்த்தி, s. The sun--as a deity. சூரியபுத்தி, s. An ornament of gold set with jewels worn on the head by females on special occasions, with another called சந்திரப்பிரபை. 3. [loc.] A seat or throne with a circlet like the sun, for an image, on festival occasions, விருத்தகேடகம். சூரியபிறை, s. [com.] As சூரியப்பிரபை, 2. சூரியமண்டலம், s. The orb or disc of the sun. 2. One of the mystic circles on the body, regarded as a lotus flower, and assigned in worship, to three of the female energies of the deity, ஞானசத்தி, கிரியாசத்தி and இச்சாசத்தி, under the emblems of the sun, moon and fire. சூரியர், s. An adherent of the சூரி யன் religion; [ex வாதி.] சூரியவிம்பம்--சூரியபிம்பம், s. The disc or orb of the sun. 2. The reflected light of the sun, சூரியப்பிரதிவிம்பம். சூரியவீதி, s. The are of the horizon which comprehends the northern and southern declinations of the sun, being divided into three parts of four signs each, and taken in the following order: (1.) மேடவீதி, the Aries'-course, including Taurus, இடபம், Leo, சிங்கம், Gemini, மிது னம், and Cancer, கடகம். 2. இடபவீதி, the Taurus'-course, including Pisces, மீனம், Aries, மேடம், Virgo, கன்னி, Libra, துலாம். (3.) மிதுனவீதி, the Gemini course, including Sagittarius, தனுசு, Capricorn, மக ரம், Aquarius, கும்பம், Scorpio, விருச்சிகம். சூரியனுதித்தல், v. noun. The rising of the sun. சூரியாஸ்தமனம், s. tuḷaci (p. 250) s. Tulasi, a fragrant herb held in great veneration by the Hindus; holy basil, which is said to be a female metamorphosed, துளவம். Ocymum sanctum. W. p. 381. TULASI.--Note. There are three kinds especially sacred to siva, viz.: வெ ண்டுளசி, சிறுதுளசி, சிவதுளசி, Oeymum tenuiflorum. There are others appropriated in Vishnu who claims also those of Siva. viz.: இராமதுளசி, கரியமால்துளசி, செந்துளசி, கருந் துளசி, விஷ்ணுதுளசி, பெருந்துளசி, Ocymum gratissimum. There are still other varieties. as கர்ப்பூரத்துளசி, which see; also காட்டுத் துளசி, Ocymum adscendens; நாய்த்துளசி, dog's basil, oppos. to நல்லதுளசி; நிலத்துளசி, Ocymum prostratum. (c.) துளசிதீர்த்தம், s. Tulasi leaves and consecrated water, taken in making oath in court, or, as a token of adherence to Vishnu on entering his temples. துளசிமணி, s. (also தாதமணி.) Beads made of the white Tulasi root or branch, worn by devotees of the Vishnu sect. துளசிமாடம், s. A raised place for Tulasi plants, instead of a flower pot. துளசிமாலை, s.
