Round, black spots in fruits, when they are over-ripe, or spoiled. ஆனைக்கண்படுதல்--ஆனைக்கண் வி ழுதல், v. noun. The appearing of spots, or defects in fruits. பலாப்பழமானைக்கண்பட்டுப் போயிற்று. The jack fruit has got a defect or flaw. ஆனைக்கதுப்பு, s. The frontal sinus of the elephant, from which secretion exudes when the animal is in rut. ஆனைக்களிமுளையான், s. A low plant, a kind of spreading thistle--pricklyfruited Pedalium murex, ஓர்வகைநெருஞ்சில். ஆனைப்படுவன், s. A kind of scabby disease--as the அக்கி. ஆனைப்படை, s. An army of elephants. ஆனைப்பந்தி, s. An elephant's stall. 2. A row of elephants. ஆனைப்பாகன், s. An elephanteer, or one who tames or guides elephants. ஆனைப்பிச்சான், s. A plant, ஓர் பூண்டு. ஆனைப்பேன், s. An insect that lives in the brinjall plant, கத்தரிச்செடியிலு ண்டாகுமோர்பூச்சி. ஆனைமஞ்சள், s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆனைமதம், s. An elephant's rut. ஆனைமத்தகம், s. An elephant's skull or part of the head, கும்பம். இ. A short letter, similar to I in English, ஓர்குற்றெழுத்து. 2. A demonstrative prefix, சுட்டெழுத்து--as இந்த, this. 3. An elephant's back. ஆனையடி, s. The footsteps of an elephant. ஆனையறுகு, s. A kind of grass, ஓரறுகு. ஆனையறையும்புள்--ஆனையிறாஞ்சி ப்புள்--அனையுண்குருகு, s. A fabulous bird --said to devour the elephant. ஆனையிலத்தி, s. Elephant's dung. ஆனையூர்தி, s. Indra whose vehicle is the elephant, இந்திரன். 2. Ian, ஐயன். (p.) ஆனையேற்றம், s. Learning and practising to ride on an elephant, யானை யேறிப்பழகுகை. ஆனைவணங்கி, s. A kind of plant whose flower is supposed to resemble the trunk of an elephant. It is also fancied to be a preservative against the attack of a wild elephant, which, it is said, will retire abashed at the sight of it, தேட்கொடுக்குப்பூண்டு. ஆனைவாழை, s. āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். A word used by the learned ancients. மன்னுயிரோம்பியருளாள்வார். They who cherish and exercise charity toward all living. அல்லலருளாள்வார்க்கில்லை. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. A cow or bull appropriated to a temple, which is left to stray as it likes; such are well received and fed. 59)

iṉaittu (p. 57) . The third person neut. of a symbolic verb, formed from the demonstrative இ, often used appellatively for such, thus, in this manner, இத்தன்மைத்து. 2. So much, thus much, இவ்வளவிற்று. இனைத்துணைத்தென்பதொன்றில்லை. It cannot be said how much it is. (குறள்.) இனைத்தென்றறிபொருள். A thing known to possess such and such properties. (நன் னூல்.) 51)

iṟṟu (p. 57) . The third person neut. sing. of a symbolic verb formed from the demonstrative இ, often used appellatively; 1. to express similitude--as நின்மனக்கிடக் கையிற்றேல், if such be the nature of thy views. 2. as a connective particle, சாரியை --as in பதிற்றுப்பத்து, ten times ten. 41)

uṭai (p. 59) s. Wealth, செல்வம். 2. Owning, belonging to, being owned, possessed, உடைமை. This word is conjugated as a symbolic verb, in the various inflections of which, or in the abstract form உடைமை, it chiefly obtains; when used as a qualifying prefix in its simple form, except as a participle, it requires the reduplication of the hard letters. பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன், s. The patron of a poem to whom it is addressed. 2. The hero of a poem. உடைப்பெருஞ்செல்வர், s. Those possessed of great wealth. உடைத்து. Third person sing. neut. of a symbolic verb often used appellatively with ஆகுதல். It has, possesses, belongs to, is subject to. இது அவற்குடைத்து. This belongs to him. மகிமையுடைத்தானமோட்சம். Glorious bliss. அச்சாணியன்னாருடைத்து. (The world) possessing persons as important (to society) as the linch pin is to a chariot. (குறள்.) யாக்கைஅழிவுடைத்தாயிருக்கின்றது. The body is perishable. உடைத்தானவன், s. A proprietor, possessor, one subject to.--Note. This form, though a solecism, is allowed. உடைய. The participle of the verb, (1) used as a form of the sixth or possessive case, ஆறாம்வேற்றுமைச்சொல்லுரு பு--as என்னுடையபொருள், my property. 2. Affixed to nouns it governs the accusative case expressed or understood--as மரத்தையுடையவன், the owner of the tree. Sometimes it is annexed to the dative --as பொருளுக்குடையவன், an heir. என்னுடையது. It is mine. மணமுடையபூ, s. A fragrant flower. மரத்தினுடையகொம்பு, s. The branch of a tree. உடையவன்--உடையான், (third pers. masc. sing.) He has, he possesses, (often used appellatively). 2. appel. n. He who has, he who possesses. (a) the owner, the possessor, (b) the Supreme Being, (c) a rich man, (d) a king, a lord, (e) the master of the house. உடையார், s. The rich, the wealthy, the opulent. 2. [prov.] A district officer. 3. A title among some tribes of Hindus. உடையார்முன்னில்லார்போல். Like the poor in the presence of the wealthy. ஆஸ்திக்குடையவன், s. An heir. மண்ணுடையான், s. A potter, குயவன். ஆஸ்தியுடையவன், s. A proprietor. ஊருடையார், s. A district officer, a registrar of land, &c. வீட்டுடையான், s. The master of a house, the husband. 99)

uṇ (p. 59) --உண்ணு, கிறேன், உண்டே ன், உண்பேன் or உண்ணுவேன், உண்ண, v. a. To eat, drink, suck--as a child; to take food, whether solids, liquids or other kinds, to taste, அருந்த. 2. To feed, make a full meal --as a dinner, &c., புசிக்க. 3. To enjoy, suffer, experience, or receive the fruits of actions performed in former births, or in future the actions of the present, அனுபவிக்க. 4. To imbibe, absorb, விழுங்க.--Note. With verbal roots and sometimes with verbal nouns it forms a passive--as அடியுண்ண, to be beaten; அலையுண்ண, to be distressed. உண்டசுற்றமுருகும். Relations or friends who have eaten together will cherish towards each other kindly feelings. உண்டசோற்றுக்கிரண்டகம்பண்ணப்படாது. One ought not to be ungrateful to his benefactor. உண்டார்மேனிகண்டாற்றெரியும். A person's diet may be known by his appearance. உண்ணக்கைசலிக்க. To be so delicate as to tire by eating--as a dainty child, &c. 2. To be wearied, cloyed, sated, &c. by too profuse a supply of food. உய்யாவினைப்பயனுண்ணுங்காலை. While experiencing the inevitable fruits of former births. உண்கலம், s. A plate or dish to cat from, a porringer, commonly brass, தாலம். உண்டாட்டு, s. Play of females, மகளிர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Play, sport, விளையாட்டு. 3. Festivity, drinking, joviality, மதுவுண் டாடுகை. உண்ணி, s. An appellative termination often contracted to உணி--as தூக்குணி, &c., one who eats, an eater. உண்ணீர், s. Water to drink. உண்பிக்க, inf. To cause to eat, drink, &c., feed one, உண்ணுவிக்க. தூக்குணி, s. One so vile and daring as not to fear hanging. 2. A malefactor who is hanged. 3. One who hangs about to get food. அழுகுணி, s. One who is always weeping; also one who is disposed to weep. அடியுணி--குட்டுணி, s. One who is beaten. குத்துணி, s. One who is stabbed. 2. A dastard, mean spirited person. இரப்புணி, s. A beggar, one who eats what he begs. அடையுணி, s. One dependent for food. கட்டுண்ண, inf. To be tied up. வெட்டுண்ண, inf. To be cut down. தடையுண்ண, inf. To be hindered. மையுண்கண்ணி, s. A woman with painted eyes, (lit.) she whose eyes have absorbed paint. முலையுண்ணுங்குழந்தை, s. An infant at the breast. நீலுண்டுகிலிலை. The pencil which has imbibed blue paint. (நன்னூலுரை.) கள்ளுண்ணி, s. A drunkard. தள்ளுண்ண, inf. To be rejected. வீண்சோறுண்ணி, s. A rice consumer, a worthless person. உண்டல். A past verbal form of உண்ணல், eating. 119)

uṇṭu (p. 59) [ex உள்.] Third pers. neut. sing. of the symbolic verb உள், but now used with all persons, in both numbers and in both திணை, it is, it exists, there is, there was, there are, there may be, there might be, &c. In some connexions, it implies a degree of uncertainly, குறிப்புவினை முற்று. 2. Existing, existence, a thing that exists, உள்ளது. This and the participle உள்ள, (with its appellative) are the only parts of the verb, generally brought into colloquial use. எனக்குத்தெய்வமுண்டு. God is my help, (எனக்கு is often omitted)--spoken of one when deserted, ill-treated, &c. அதற்குநானுண்டுஅவனுண்டு. This concerns him and me exclusively (you need not meddle with it). 2. He and I are responsible for that. உண்டில்லையெனல், Either affirming or denying. உண்டுபட, inf. [prop. உண்டாக.] To come into existence, to become formed or produced by natural process evident to the senses, to happen, occur, தோன்ற. 2. To have origin, உண்டாக. 3. To grow, thrive, flourish, முளைக்க. உண்டுபட்டனவெல்லாமழியும். All that is created will perish, or be reduced to its primeval elements. இதிலுப்புண்டுபட்டது. Salt is formed here. அங்கேயொருகலகமுண்டுபட்டிருக்கிறது. An insurrection is sprung up there. உண்டுபடுத்த, inf. [prov. prop. உண் டுபண்ண.] To make, create, &c.--as உண் டாக்க. 2. To fabricate, make a false story, ஏற்படுத்த. வேதம்உண்டுபடுத்தியசீர்த்திவியாதமுனி. Vedaviasar renowned as the compiler of the Vedas. (திருச்.) உண்டுபண்ண, inf. To make, bring into existence. உண்டுபண்ணிவைக்க, inf. To make, to establish, render permanent. 2. To rear plants, &c. 3. To establish one in life. உண்டென, inf. To say it is. 2.
