aññāṉam (p. 7) s. [priv. அ.] Ignorance, spiritual ignorance, worldly illusion, belief in external appearances, destitution of the knowledge of the true God. This is the state of the soul from the beginning, and its condition till its மலம் is removed. When the fruits of its former actions are worked out, in sufferings and enjoyments, the soul begins to be enlightened by the grace of the Deity, its அஞ்ஞா னம் then ceases, and ஞானம் commences, increases and ripens for its union with the Deity. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. Without labor, or difficulty. பாவமின்றிநடக்கிறது அரிது. It is difficult to live without sinning. 23)

iẕi (p. 55) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To descend, dismount, sink, fall into, to be involved in, இறங்க. 2. To be degraded, disgraced, to degenerate, to be reduced in character, estimation, rank or circumstances, இழிவுபட. 3. To fall below mediocrity, to be inferior, to be below in comparison, தாழ. இழிகடை, s. [vul.] The meanest, lowest, most degraded, மிகவிழிந்தது. (Abusively.) அவனொரு இழிகடை. He is a low wretch. இழிகண், s. Inflammation of the eyes causing the lids to droop, இழிந்தகண். இழிகுலத்தோர், s. Low caste people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர், s. Persons of low caste, illiterate or ill-bred people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர்வார்த்தை, s. The vulgar dialect. இழிசொல், s. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. To treat with contempt, நிந்தைசெய்ய. தனதுமரபினிழிவுயர்ச்சியின்றி. (Choosing a wife) from a family neither above nor below his rank. 34)

īṉam (p. 58) s. Deficiency, want, privation, destitution, குறைபாடு. 2. Mutilation, அங்கவீனம். 3. Disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 4. Detriment, injury, harm, கேடு. Wils. p. 976. HEENA.--Note. Affixed to other words, ஈனம் is a privative and gives them an opposite meaning. ஈனமானநாயைத்தோண்மேலெப்படிக்கொண்டுவரு கிறாய்? How can you carry a vile dog on your shoulders? கோடரிக்காம்புகுலத்துக்கீனம். The handle of an axe (being of wood) is inimical to its own species. [prov.] ஈனசாதி, s. Low or degraded caste, barbarous caste. ஈனமிலணங்கு, s. A goddess, தெய்வப்பெண். (p.) புத்தியீனம், s. Dullness, foolishness. புத்தியீனன், s. A foolish, unwise or stupid man.

īṉu (p. 58) --ஈன், கிறது, ஈன்றது, ஈனும், ஈன, v. a. To bear, bring forth. (usually limited to brutes) to cause birth or production, to beget, originate, பெற. 2. To yield, produce, put forth as fruits, &c., காய்க்க. அருளென்னுமன்பீன்குழவி. Kindness which is the offspring of love. (குறள்.) வானமேயீன்றது பூமியேதாங்கிற்று. The heavens produced, and the earth supported--spoken of one in a state of destitution. விரிதிரைப்பரவையீன்றவிளங்கிழை. The ornamented Lukshmi whom the wide billowy sea produced. (நைட.) 42)

ulōpam (p. 66) s. Penuriousness, stinginess, close-fistedness, illiberality, ஈயாமை. 2. (p.) Covetousness, intense or greedy desire, cupidity, avarice, பொரளா சை. Wils. p. 725. LOB'HA. 3. [in grammar.] Elision of a letter, &c., கெடுதல்விகா ரம். 4. Want, destitution, குறைவு. This is given as one of the six moral evils. See பகை. Wils. p. 724. LOPA. யாகத்தைத்திரவியலோபமில்லாமற்செய்துமுடித்தார் கள். They performed the sacrifice without lack of money. உலோபத்தனம்--உலோபத்துவம், s. Penuriousness, cupidity, &c. உலோபத்துவமாய்ச்செய்ய, inf. To perform a ceremony illiberally or meanly. உலோபன், s. A niggard, a stingy person, a miser, பிசுனன். உலோபி, s. (mas. and fem.) An avaricious person, an extremely covetous person. Wils. p. 725. LOB'HIN. மத்தியலோபம், s. Elision of a letter in the middle of a word. 43) *

oṉṟu (p. 84) s. One (the numeral), ஒன் றென்னுமெண். 2. One thing, அஃறிணையொரு மை. 3. Union, coalescence, ஐக்கம். 4. In construction, it means either, or--as ஒன் றுதீவினையைவிடு, ஒன்றுஅதின்பயனைநுகர், either abandon your evil deeds, or take the consequences. ஒன்றத்தனைகொடுத்தால்நானிரண்டத்தனைகொடுப் பேன். If he has given once as much, I will give twice. ஒன்றாறுகிறானில்லை. He so wonders that he knows not when to cease extolling. 2. His sorrow, regret, &c. is unremitted. ஒன்றிலிருந்தொன்றிலேபாய்தல். Talking loosely, incoherently, jumping from one thing to another. ஒன்றினுளொன்று. One among another, reciprocally, mutually. ஒன்றுகேள். Listen to a word of advice, hear what I have to say. ஒன்றுக்குமசையான். He is moved by nothing. ஒன்றுமொன்றுமிரண்டென்றுதெரியாதவன். A person so ignorant that he cannot tell that one and one make two. ஒன்றுவிட்டொருநாள். Every other day, alternate days. ஒன்றேயொன்று. One only. ஒன்றோஅவனாலேகேடு. Have I sustained but one loss by him? நான்சொன்னதொன்று, அவன்செய்ததொன்று. I told him one thing and he did another. மனமொன்றுவாக்கொன்று. His profession is one thing and intention another. ஒன்றரை, s. One and a half. ஒன்றன்கூட்டம், s. A collection of similar things, ஒருபொருட்கூட்டம். (p.) ஒன்றன்பால், s. [in grammar.] Neuter singular of the irrational class, அஃறி ணையொருமைப்பால். ஒன்றாய், adv. Together, altogether, ஒன்றாக. ஒன்றாலொன்றும். By any means, யாதொன்றினாலும். ஒன்றாலொன்றுங்குறையில்லை. There is no lack at all--commonly applied to provisions, the country produce, &c. ஒன்றி, s. [vul. ஒண்டி.] One, alone, solitary, lonely (spoken of persons), தனி. ஒன்றிக்காரன்--ஒன்றியாள், s. A bachelor, a widower, a single or lonely person, தனியாள். ஒன்றினமுடித்தறன்னினமுடித்தல், v. noun. [in grammar.] Forming a rule or definition so as to include others, ஒருத்தி. ஒன்றுக்கு. For one thing, viz.: to make water--the common expression among school boys when asking to go out for this purpose. ஒன்றுக்கிருக்க, inf. To sit or squat down or go for one thing, viz.: to make water, நீர்விட. ஒன்றுக்குப்போக, inf. To make water. ஒன்றுக்கொன்று. To or for each other. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுசரி. They are equal, alike, &c. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுபேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். [vul.] They have called each other by hard names. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுவித்தியாசம். Different one from another. ஒன்றுபட, inf. To become reconciled, ஒப்புரவாக. 2. To be united, to coalesce, பொருந்த. ஒன்றுபடுத்த, inf. To bring about a union or acquaintance between persons, ஒருமைப்படுத்த. 2. To reconcile, ஒப் புரவாக்க. ஒன்றுபாதி, s. [prov.] A moiety, a half-commonly of land, அரை. 2. Midnight, நடுச்சாமம். அவன்தன்சரக்கையொன்றுபாதியாகவிற்றுப்போட் டான். He sold his goods at half price. ஒன்றுமண்டடி--ஒன்றுமன்றடி, s. Concord, union, harmony, intimate familiarity. 2. Confusion, want of order or system. ஒன்றுமறியாதவன், s. One who knows nothing. ஒன்றுமறியாதவனுமில்லைஎல்லாமறிந்தவனுமில்லை. None is so ignorant as to know nothing --none so wise as to know every thing. ஒன்றுமற்றவன், s. A useless person, உபயோகமற்றவன். 2. A very poor person, தரித்திரன். ஒன்றுமில்லாமை--ஒன்றுமின்மை, s. Utter destitution, the relinquishing of every thing--as an act of devotion. (அறநெறி.) ஒன்றேகால், s. One and a quarter. ஒன்றொழிபொதுச்சொல், s. [in grammar.] Terms common to both genders, one only of which is understood, the other being excluded by the connexion, இருதிணையாண்பெண்ணுளொன்றனை யொழிக்கும்பொதுச்சொல்--as ஆயிரமக்கள்பொரு தார், a thousand persons fought; i. e. men. 33)

oṟkm (p. 84) s. Poverty, indigence, destitution, want, adversity, வறுமை. 2. Diminution, failure, குறைவு. 3. Forbearance, restraint, refraining from, அடக்கம். (நீதிநெ றி.) (p.) ஒற்கத்தினூற்றாந்துணை. It would prove a support in adversity. (குறள். 325. 1.) ஒற்கமின்றியுற வியொன்றாடகக்கற்குழித்துநெறிசெயு ங்காட்சியே. As if an emmet could by undiminished perseverance work itself a path-way in Meru the golden mountain-(சேதுப்.) ஒற்கமில்வளம், s. Undiminishing wealth. (ஸ்காந்.) 24)

kuṟai (p. 132) s. Dificiency, defalcation, imperfection; failure, ஊனம். 2. Indigence, poverty, destitution, தரித்திரம். 3. Request, petition, solicitation, கூறுங்குறை. 4. Complement, balance, the part wanting, arrears, எஞ்சல். 5. Remainder, overplus, remnant, the rest, residue, சேடம். 6. Fault, defect, flaw, குற்றம். 7. Dissatisfaction, grievance, umbrage, வெறுப்பு. 8. Displeasure, indignation--as of a demon of deity, in consequence of accustomed offerings being withholden, தெய்வக்குறை. 9. Tribute; revenue, அரசிறை. 1. [in gram.] Abscission, cutting off--as syncope, apocope, &c.; omission, suppression, சொல்லின் குறை. அவனுக்கென்மேற்குறையுண்டு. He is displeased with me; he has a complaint against me. இனியெனக்கென்னகுறை. What can I need more? 2. What defect is there in me now? குறைகொள்ள--குறையாயெண்ண, inf. To take a thing amiss, to feel aggrieved, to be piqued, to complain. குறைகோள், v. noun. Solicitation, petition, mendicity, இரத்தல். குறைசொல்ல, inf. To complain, to state grievances, to utter complaints, to express dissatisfaction. 2. To reveal one's wants, குறைகூற. 3. To change with fault; to censure, criticise; to blame. குறைதீர, inf. To be supplied--as wants. 2. To be satisfied. குறைதீர்க்க--குறையாற்ற--குறைநீக்க, inf. To supply wants, to satisfy; to relieve necessities. 2. To pacify, appease. 3. To fulfil an obligation. குறைமுடிக்க, inf. To grant requests. 2. To supply wants. 3. To take revenge. குறையற, inf. To be supplied--as wants, &c. See குறைதீர. குறையிரக்க, inf. To beg, supplicate, petition, விண்ணப்பஞ்செய்ய. குறையின்மை, s. Completeness; perfection; faultlessness. குறைநிறை, s. Domestic wants and comforts; defect or excess; 2. Deficiency--as towards a guest or in offerings to the deity, &c., often used in apology. குறைபட, inf. To be wanting or missing, to diminish; to grow less, scarce, dear. குறைப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான். He is displeased. குறைபாடு, v. noun. Deficiency, defect, ஈனம். 2. Want, lack, destitution, குறைவு. 3. Indigence, want, poverty, தரித்திரம். குறைப்பிராணனாய், adv. Half-dead-as குற்றுயிராய். குறைக்காரியம், s. The remainder--as of an affair, story, discourse, subject, business, &c. குறைநாள், s. The remainder or part of the day. 2. The days wanting to complete a given period. குறைப்பேர், s. The rest of the persons. குறைப்பொழுது, s. The remainder of of day, or time. குறைமாதம், s. Wanting in months-as premature delivery. 2. Deficiency in a month. குறைமாதத்துப்பிள்ளை, s. A child of premature birth. குறையுடல்--குறைத்தலை, s. A headless body, which is said sometimes to dance on the field of battle; trunks divested of heads. குறைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand partially consumed. குறைச்சால், s. The balk in ploughing, உழவறாவிடம். See சால். குறைவயிறு, s. Stomach partially supplied; hunger not fully satisfied. குறைவயிறாய்சாப்பிட்டேன். I ate sparingly. குறைவேலை, s. An incomplete, unfinished work. தலைக்குறை, s.
