There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. (சது.) சுடர்விளக்காயினுந் தூண்டுகோல் ஒன்று வேணும். Though a lamp burn brightly, it will need a wick-pricker, i. e, the best require stirring up. சுடரெறிய, inf. To radiate, gleam, sparkle--as some precious gems. சுடரெண்ணெய், s. Drops of burning oil from a lamp. 2. Oil burnt in drops for medicinal purposes. 3. Margosa oil extracted by fire. சுடரோன், s. The sun, சூரியன். சுடர்கால, inf. To emit rays--as the sun. (p.) சுடர்க்கடை, s. Fire fly, மின்மினி. (p.) சுடர்க்கொடி, s. Incense of burnt camphor, ஆரதிகர்ப்பூரம். சுடர்ச்செலவு, s. [in astrol.] A division of the rising sign into two equal parts, for casting nativities. See இலக்கி னம். சுடர்த்தகழி, s. A small candelabria. சுடர்நிலை, s. A candlestick, விளக்குத் தண்டு. (p.) சுடர்மழுங்க, inf. To grow dim as the sun or moon in an eclipse, or when overcast. 2. To become dim as a lamp. சுடர்மௌலியர், s. The Devas, or supernals, as radiantly crowned with divine gems, or a halo of glory, வானோர். சுடர்விட--சுடர்விட்டெரிய, inf. To burn brightly or cast a long flame, as a lamp. (c.) சுடர்விழ, inf. To drop, as burning flames from a lamp. சுடர்விழுத்த, inf. [prov.] To cause burning oil to fall in drops by setting fire to a cloth suffused with it. சுடர்விழியோன், s. [in Hindu astron.] The arranging of sea-shells (which are used for numbers) in a line beginning with units up to tens, hundreds, &c., or numbers placed one after another according to their local value-oppos. to சர்ப்பாகாரம். தண்டாயுதம், s. tṇṭu (p. 223) கிறேன், தண்டினேன், வேன், தண்ட, v. a. To collect, to exact, to gather; to recover debts, rents, taxes, dues, contributions in money, grain, jewels, &c., வரிமுத லியதண்ட. (c.) 2. v. n. To part with to leave, to remove, to separate from, பிரிய. (p.) 3. (a change of தட்டு, soft for the hard.) To touch, commonly in the negative--as நாக்கிலேதண்டாமல், பட. (c.) நாக்கிலேதண்டாமல்மருந்தைச்சாப்பிட்டான். He swallowed the medicine without its touching his tongue. தண்டாச்சிறப்பினள், s. An epithet of சரசுவதி, the consort of Brahma; (lit.) she who possesses perpetual excellency. (p.) தண்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To collect and deliver. கடன்தண்ட, inf. To recover debts. கடன்தண்டவந்தபிள்ளை. One that dies young; (lit.) the child that came to recover a debt (of a former birth). பணந்தண்ட, inf. To collect money. 3)

There are different kinds--as ஆகாயத்தாமரை, ஓரிலைத்தாமரை, செந்தாமரை, மலைத்்தாமரை, வெண்தாமரை, which see. தாமரைக்கண்ணன், s. Vishnu, as lotuseyed, விஷ்ணு. தாமரைக்காய், s. The pericarp of a lotus. தாமரைக்கிழங்கு, s. Lotus roots, an article of food. தாமரைக்கொட்டை--தாமரைமணி, s. The seeds of the lotus. தாமரைச்சத்துரு, s. A kind of native arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். தாமரைத்தடாகம், s. A tank filed with lotus flowers--very meritorious for bathing. தாமரைநண்பன்--தாமரைநாயகன், s. The sun as lord of the lotus. தாமரைநாளம், s. A winding stalk of the lotus. தாமரைநூல், s. Fibres of the lotus stalk, used with ghee as a wick for lamps, deemed very meritorious and acceptable to Siva. தாமரைப்பூ--தாமரசபுஷ்பம், s. Lotus flower. தாமரைமொட்டு--தாமரைமொக்குள், s. Its flower-bud. தாமரையாசனன், s. Brahma, the lotusseated. தாமரையாசனி--தாமரையாள், s. Lukshmi. தாமரையாள், s. Yellow sulphuret of arsenic. 2. See தாமரையாசனி. தாமரையான், s. An epithet of Brahma, பிரமன். தாமரையிலை, s. The lotus leaves, which are used for spreading food for guests, &c. தாமரையிலைநீர், s. Crystal-like waterdrops on the lotus leaf, ever in motion; (a figure of a troubled mind.) தாமரைவளையம், s. Coils of the lotus stalk. தாமரைவற்றல், s. Dried lotus stalk, used for food. தாமரைவாசி, appel. n. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். (R.) நிலத்தாமரை, s. The rose shrub. (R.) படுதமரை, s. A ring-worm. See under படு, v. 4)

[in gram.] Omission of a particle in the combination of words, as தொட்டனைத்து, for தொட்டஅனைத்து, as far as day, தொகுத்தல் விகாரம். 8. Elliptical combination of words, as பொன்கொணர்ந்தான், for பொன்னைக்கொணர்ந் தான், he brought the gold. (See தொகைநிலை.) 9. The main division of a treaties, as distinguished from வகை or விரி, அறுவகைச் சூத்திரத்தொன்று. தொகைப்பிசகிப்போயிற்று. The calculation is erroneous. தொகைகட்ட, inf. To finish, to conclude, to bring to an end. 2. To deliver up, to make over, as money, &c., to make a final payment. 3. To sum up, to make a total, to make out the total, to cast up. தொகைகாட்ட, inf. To give a written account. 2. To state a particular number or sum. 3. To make a sum appear large, to magnify. 4. v. n. To appear large, as an amount. தொகைகூட்ட, inf. To add up. தொகைக்காரன், s. A man of considerable property, தனவான், (c.) தொகைச்சூத்திரம், s. One of the six kinds of rules for composition. See சூத்தி ரம். தொகைதைக்க, inf. To make out the grand total of an account. See தை, v. தொகைநிலை, s. A summary, contraction, ellipsis, &c., சுருங்கிநிற்கை. 2. [in gram.] The connection of a word with the பயனிலை by omitting a particle, வேற்று மையுருபுமுதலியதொக்குநிற்றல்.--It embrasces six varieties; 1. வேற்றுமைத்தொகை, the omission of the sign or from of the case, as பொன்கொடுத்தான், for பொன்னைக்கொடுத் தான். 2. வினைத்தொகை, a verb without the sign of the tense, combined with a noun, as கொல்புலி for கொன்றபுலி, கொல்கின்றபுலி, கொல்லும்புலி. 3. பண்புத்தொகை, omission of the adjective sign ஆகிய or ஆய in combining the qualifying epithet with the noun, as கருங்குவளை for கருமையாகியகுவளை, or two nouns in apposition, as ஆதிபக வன். 4. உவமைத்தொகை, the combination of two words with the omission of the sign of comparison, as பான்மொழி for பால் போலுமொழி. 5. உம்மைத்தொகை, omission of the particle உம், as கபிலபாணர் for கபிலனு ம்பாணனும்; also இராப்பகல் for இராவும், பகலும். --Note. In this combination. there is commonly no reduplication. 6. அன்மொ ழித்தொகை, a metonomy or omission of a word, commonly the name of a person, immediately after any of the five preceeding ellipses, as பொற்றொடி. for பொற் றொடியையுடையாள், the golden braceletdamsel. தொகைநிலைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem consisting of a fixed, even number of verses, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். தொகைநிலைத்தொடர்மொழி, s. As உவ மைத்தொகை. (R.) தொகைநிலையுருவகம், s. [in rheto.] A perfect metaphor, ஓரலங்காரம். தொகைபடுவது, appel. n. Contraction of words, as தொகப்படுவது. தொகைபார்க்க, inf. To sum of cast up the amount. (c.) தொகைபூட்ட, inf. [prov.] To balance accounts, to strike a balance, கணக்குச்சரிக் கட்ட. 2. As தொகைதைக்க. தொகைப்படுத்த--தொகையாக்க, inf. To make up an even number. 2. To make a large sum. 3. To sum up; to reduce to heads. தொகைப்பிசகு--தொகைமோசம், s. An error in a reckoning. 2. (fig.) A mistake, a blunder. தொகைப்பொருள், s. Recapitulation; peroration, விரித்தபொருளின்அடக்கம். தொகைமோசம், s. See தொகைபிசகு. தொகையகராதி, s. One of the four divisions of சதுரகராதி, which see. தொகையுருவகம், s. As பண்புத்தொ கை. (R.) தொகையுவமம், s. Contraction of metaphor. See உவமைத்தொகை. தொகையேற்ற, inf. To make a large sum, by the addition of many small items, commonly as a debt. 2. As தொ கைகூட்ட. (c.) தொகையேறுதல், v. noun. Swelling in a large sum by the addition of many items. 2.
