As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. To bind (charm) the mouth of a serpent, a dog, &c. 2. To charm a weapon to prevent its cutting, &c. 3. To settle an account. அலகுகழிக்க, inf. To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

iṭṟu (p. 45) கிறேன், இடறினேன், வேன், இடற, v. a. To kick off or away, to sever or strike off a head, a limb, &c., with the foot, a bent bow, &c., பெயர்க்க. 2. v. n. To stumble, trip, strike the foot against, தடக்க. இடறொட்டமெனநெடியவரையுருட்டி. Rolling the towering mountains, as one might dash to pieces a pot-sherd with his feet. (இராமா.) கரடியிடறிவிளையாடுஞ்சுரம். The forest where the bear plays, knocking about (the fruits, &c.) with his feet. பரிகாரர்தலையிடறி. (An elephant) striking off the heads of horsemen. (பெரியபுராணம்.) காலிடறிவிழுந்தான். He stumbled and fell. பகைவரின்தலையையானையின்காலினாலிடறுவித்தான். He caused the heads of the enemies to be struck off, with the foot of an elephant. இடறுகட்டை, s. A stumbling block, hinderance, an obstruction. இடறல், v. noun. Stumbling, tripping. 2. Offence, scandal. இடறற்பட, inf. To take offence, to be offended, be hindered. 76)

oṟu (p. 84) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To reduce, suppress, subject, restrain the senses, desires, &c., to mortify the body, curb the appetites, to pinch, stint or deny one's self, to suppress the passions, அடக்க. 2. To afflict, distress, cause pain to one's self or others, அலைக்க. 3. To punish, chastise, தண்டிக்க. (கு. 964.) 4. To rebuke, reprove, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 5. To dislike, to be disgusted with, வெறுக்க. (p.) 6. v. n. To become scarce and dear, to fail or be scanty--as crops, rain, &c., to be sparing, குறைய. கொலையிற்கொடியாரைவேந்தொறுத்தல். Punishing the guilty by death--the prerogative of a prince. (குறள்.) அகமொறுக்கும். Corn will be scarce. அவனொருத்தருக்குமொறுக்கிறதில்லை. He submits to no one's reproof; he does not brook censure. கையொறாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He gives liberally. அன்னத்தையொறு. Abstain from taking food. சற்றும்வாயொறுக்கிறானில்லை. He does not at all restrain himself (in speaking). 2. He does not conform to the prescribed diet. உடம்பினையொறுத்துநோற்பார். Those who mortify their bodies and do penance. (ஸ்காந்.) கொடுஞ்சொற்றாயரொறுப்பவும். When the mother rebukes with sharp language-ஒறுத்துக்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To be afflicted. விலையொறுக்க, inf. kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. To impinge--as a strained line, or bow-string in reaction, கயிறுசுண்ட. 5. To be tight, as a string or as a muscle in cramp, &c., நரம்புமுதலியனஇழுக்க. (c.) சுண்டக்கட்ட, inf. [prov. fig.] To strain and fasten, as a rope tied to posts, அழுத்திக்கட்ட. சுண்டக்காய, inf. To boil and dry away. சுண்டக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To boil so as to reduce or exhaust the liquor. சுண்டப்பிடிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pinch too closely in measuring cloth. &c. so as to give scanty measure; to gripe. 2. To be niggardly in expenditure. சுண்டிப்போக, inf. To be reduced by evaporation. 2. To wither, to be shrunk--as the face, வெட்கிப்போக. சுண்டவைக்க, inf. To let the curry or porridge, &c., become dry and hard, when boiling. அவனைச்சுண்டவுலர்த்திப்போட்டார்கள். They have reduced and weakened him, (by diet, bleeding, &c.) அவன்முகஞ்சுண்டிப்போயிற்று. cuẕi (p. 198) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To be formed as curls, curvatures, &c., on the head or body, அங்கஞ்சுழிக்க. 2. To sink, fall in, as the eyes by age, &c., கண்சுழிக்க. 3. To fall here and there--as rain in partial showers, மழைசுழிக்க. (c.) 4. [prov.] To go, move about, to walk here and there, அலைய. மழைசுழித்துவிட்டுப்போயிற்று. The rain was very scanty. கபாலக்குத்துகண்ணைச்சுழித்தது. A severe headache has sunk the eyes. சுழித்தமுகம், s. A sunk face. Compare சுரித்தமூஞ்சி. சுழித்துவலிக்க, inf. To have stitches or spasms connected with breathing. சுழித்துவாங்க, inf. To have pain in breathing. 2. To draw in--as a whirlpool or eddy, to ingulph. சுழிகாற்று--சுழிக்காற்று, s. Whirl-wind. See under காற்று. சுழிமாந்தம், s. Distortion of the bowels in children, connected with indigestion. See மாந்தம். சுழிமின்னல், s. Forked lightning. (Rare.) சுழித்தது, appel. n. Any thing with a curl of flexture. சுழியாதது, appel. n. (neg.) That which has not a curl--as டு. 61)

The things to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem, addressed to a hero or heroine: 1. மங்கலம், an auspicious word. 2. சொல், a word natural, elegant, unequivocal, and that will scan well. 3. எழுத்து, a word composed of an odd number of letters. 4. தானம், formed of letters taken from any of the first three of the five classes of தானம் (which denote the five stages of life), counting from the first letter of the name of the hero. 5. பால் formed of masculine or feminine letters according to the sex of the person. 6. உண்டி, composed of benign letters. 7. வருணம், of letters appropriate to the caste. 8. நாள், of letters belonging to an asterism, which has no malign aspect on that of his birth. 9. கதி, of letters of the first two families or species. 1. கணம், a word appropriate to some of the first four of the eight கணம், as it regards the feet, &c. செய்யுட்போக்கு, v. noun. Poetic style, idiom, phraseology, classical usage, poetic language. செய்யுணடை, s. Poetic usage, or style. 2. The metre of a verse in respect to its feet, or movement in reading or singing. செய்யுளாக்க--செய்யுள்செய்ய, inf. To put prose into verse, make poetry. செய்யுள்வழக்கு, s. Poetic usage, style, or phrascology, classical usage; oppos. to உலகவழக்கு, or பரவைவழக்கு, common usage. செய்யுள்்்விகாரம், s.
