eṉ (p. 75) கிறேன், றேன், பேன், என்ன, v. a. To say, name, pronounce, express, do, indicate, either by words or signs, expressed, or implied, என்றுசொல்ல. This is the common form for quotation, in which sense it generally occurs in all its various uses. In the infinitive and other parts it is commonly found with one ன் only. என்கு. I say. என்கும். We say. என்ப--என்பர்--என்மர்--என்மனார்--என்றிசினோ ர். They say, they may say, some say, &c. அப்படியென்கிறான். So he says. 2. He does so (the speaker making the sign or sound intended). இல்லையென்கிறேன். I say no-implying impatience, displeasure, emphasis, &c. பணமில்லையென்கிறான். He says he has no money. போவென்கிறேன். I tell you to go, lit. I say go, and implying I have said so before. அவனைப்போவென்னப்போகிறான். When I say go, he goes. காமதேனுவென்கிறபசு. The cow (of the supernals) called Kamadhanu. நானென்னுமெண்ணம். Self conceit, consequence. என்பவன், appel. n. He who says so. 2. He who is called so. பெரியானென்பவன். Perian, or he who is called Perian. ஆவென்ன, inf. To open the mouth, lit. to say ஆ. ஈயென்ன, inf. To show the teeth, lit. to say ஈ. என்பிக்க, inf. To cause another to say, to prove, சொல்லுவிக்க. அதையவன்வாயினாலேயுமக்கென்பிப்பேன். I will prove it to you from his mouth. என்று. The gerund of the verb என், used instead of என the infinitive (which is the poetic usage in this connexion), it serves to end a quotation and to connect it with the following part of the sentence, in which case it often corresponds to the conjunction that, வினையெச்சம். அவனையடித்தேனென்றுசொன்னான். He said that he struck him, lit. he said, I struck him. Note 1st. In connexion with appropriate verbs, என்று, and என often mean to expect, to think, imagine, to suppose, to pretend, to desire, எண்ணுதல் or some such verb being implied; பணந் தெய்வமென்றுநடக்கிறான், he makes money his god; அதுபுகையென்றிருந்தேன், I thought it was smoke, I took it for smoke; அவர்வருவாரென்றிருக்கிறேன், I expect him to come; அவன்சொன்னானென்றுவந்தாயா, have you came because he told you?--Note 2d. According to நன்னூல், என்று and என are இடைச்சொல் or particles, with several specific uses, the other parts of the verb are or may be included. 1. With பெயர் or names; அழுக்காறெனவொரு பாவி, the sinner called envy. (குறள்.) 2. With குறிப்பு or symbolic forms; சிக்கென வூன்றியவேர், the root which has taken firm hold; திடீரெனவந்தான், he came suddenly. 3. With இசை or (imitative) sounds; ஒல்லெனவொலித்தது, it sounded ஒல்; அடுக் கு or repititive symbolic terms are included in this class; படபடென்றுநடுங்கி னான், he trembled (shook, shivered, &c.) greatly; சுஃஃறென்னுந்தண்டோட்டுப்பெண் ணை, the palmyras whose green leaves rustled (emitted the sound of சுஃஃறு). 4. With எண் enumeration, in which they are equivalent to the copulative conjunction; சாத்தனெனக்கொற்றனெனப்பூதனெ னமூவரும்வந்தார், Sattan, Kottan and Bhuta came; தேனென்றுபாலென்றுவமையில்லாமொழி, words unequalled (in sweetness) by honey or milk. 5. With பண்பு or symbolic terms expressive of quality and intensity; சிவேரெனச்சிவந்தது, it reddened to a crimson; வெள்ளெனவா, come in the grey of the morning; வெள்ளெனவி ளர்த்தது, it became very white.--Note 3d. என்று and என also serve to express similitude, like, as, &c.; புலியெனப்பாய்ந் தான், he sprang like a tiger; காந்தளெனக் கைநீட்டி, extending her காந்தள்-like hand. --Note 4th. என and என்று are also used to express pre-eminence, &c.; இன்னதென் றில்லை, it is no matter which; ஆரென்றுநி னைத்தாய், who do you suppose I am? I am not to be treated thus, &c., உயிரென் றுபார்க்கவில்லை, he does not (or did not) regard even life; அவனுக்கின்னாரென்றில்லை, it is no matter to him who; குருவென் றுபேணுகின்றிலன், he does not respect even the guru; எவ்வளவென்றில்லை, it is no matter how much. 2. How much soever, how little soever. 3. It is illimitable, undefined, the quantity is unknown; வாய்வயிறென்றுபார்க்கிறதில்லை, he does not give himself time to eat.--Note 5th. என and என்று are also used with reiterative symbolic terms; மடம்டென்றொலித்த து, it sounded மட, மட; அடியடியென்றடித் தான், he beat him soundly; தலைதலையென்ற டித்துக்கொண்டான், he beat his head greatly through rage, grief, despair, &c.; lit. saying, 'Head, head;' வாய்வாயென்றடிக்க, to beat one's mouth greatly--in sorrow, despair, &c.; எறியெறியென்றெறிந்தான், he threw many times; lit. he threw, saying, 'Throw, throw.'--Note 6th. என and என்று, with a dative imply, designed or appointed for, sacred or devoted to, for the sake of, &c.; சுவாமிக்கென்றுநேர்ந் தது, it is vowed (devoted) to God; தன்பிள்ளைக்கென்றுவைத்துக்கொண்டான், he kept it for his child; எனக்கென்றெடுக்கமாட் டேன், I will not take it for myself-Note 7th. The subjunctive என்றால் joined to verbs or used when verbs are implied forms the subjunctive of those verbs.--Note 8th. The subjunctive என் னில், poetically, என்னின், if, is contracted into எனில் and எனின், and in classical usage to எல் and என்: உம் joined to those forms makes them though; they are added to other verbs or to nouns; ஓரடி யென்கிலும்நட, walk, if it be but one step. 40)

ellām (p. 74) s. All, the whole, every, முழுதும். Like other universal terms, this admits உம், which however is often omitted, when the word is not used as a prefix; when it occupies the place of an adjective, its ம் is lost, and உம் is added to the word which it qualifies.--Note. In classical usage எல்லாம் takes அற்று as its declining particle--as மரமெல்லாவற்றையுங்கண்டான், he has seen all the trees. எல்லாத்திசைகளும். The whole horizon. எல்லாநம்மையும். All of us. எல்லீர்நும்மையும். All of you. எல்லாப்பூமியும்--பூமியெல்லாம். All the land, the whole of the land. 2. The whole earth. எல்லாரும்--எல்லோரும். All persons, அனை வரும். எல்லாரையும்--எல்லார்தம்மையும். All of them. எல்லோமும். We all, all of us, நாமெல்லாம். நீங்ககெல்லாரும். Impr. for நீவிரெல்லாரும். அவர்களெல்லாரும். All of them.--Note. The superlative being unknown in Tamil, the comparative is employed, as in the following and similar instances. The universality of the term gives it a superlative meaning. எல்லாரிலுமேலானவர். The greatest of all. 2. The most high. அதுஎல்லாவற்றிலும்மேலானது. It is the highest of all. 8)

A magical mercury pill which fabulously is said to enable a person to traverse the airy regions, and visit unknown worlds, சித்தர் குளிகையிலொன்று. கமனசித்தர், s. A class of men who have attained superhuman powers to pass through space, நினைக்குமிடத்துக்கெல் லாம்போகுஞ்சித்தர். கமனசித்தி, s. Supernatural power of passing through the air. கமனம்பண்ண--கமனிக்க, inf. To go, to pass swiftly, commonly through the sky. பரதாரகமனம், s. Illicit intercourse with another's wife. பரஸ்திரீகமனம், s. The skull. தலைமயக்கம்--தலைமயக்கு, v. noun Swimming of the head, intoxication. தலைமயங்க, inf. To come together, to be brought together, to unite. 2. To assemble, to join, to meet, கூடிவர. 3. To mix, to be amalgamated, கலங்க. (p.) தலைமயிர், s. Hair of the head. தலைமயிர்வாங்க, inf. To shave off the hair for the first time. தலைமறையவிருக்க, inf. To remain concealed. தலைமாடு, s. (Gen. தலைமாட்டின்.) The head of a bed, place for the head when a person is lying down. See கால்மாடு. தலைமாடுகால்மாடாகக்கிடக்கிறான். He lies with his head where his feet should be. தலைமாணாக்கர், s. Head scholars. (c.) தலைமாலை, s. The garland of skulls worn by Siva, சிவன்மாலை. தலைமுழுக, inf. To bathe one's self, head and all. அவன்தலைமுழுகிப்போனான். She has bathed, --that is, had a monthly course. தலைமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing with oil. 2. A woman's monthly courses, catamenia, மகளிர்சூதகம். தலைமுறி, s. [prov.] Piece of a fish, yam, &c., near the head. தலைமுறை, s. Generation, lineal descent. தலைமுறைகண்டவன். An ancestor. தலைமுறைதலைமுறையாக. From generation to generation. தலைமுறையில்லாததாழ்வு. Extinction of a generation or family. (R.) தலைமுறைப்பட்டவன். A person of an ancient and high family. தலைமுறையிலில்லாதவழக்கம். A custom unknown to one's ancestors. தலைமூட்டை, s. A load for the head. See தலைச்சுமை. தலைமூட்டைக்காரன், s. A porter. தலைமூர்ச்சனை, s. Trouble, vexation, தீராதகலக்கம். தலைமூளை,s. Brain in the head in distinction from the marrow in the bones. தலைமேற்கொள்ள, inf. To take on the head; i. e. to obey implicitly. 2. To express submission. 3. To reverence. தலைமோதிக்கொண்டுதிரிய, inf. To walk about beating the head from sorrow or despair. தலையசைக்க, inf. To nod the head in approval, or shake it in displeasure. தலயடி--தலையடிப்பு, v. noun. Trouble, vexation, annoyance. 2. The first threshing of corn, by beating the head of the sheaf against the ground. தலையடிக்க, inf. To be troubled with, to be the cause of trouble to one. தலையணை, s. Pillow, bolster, cushion. தலையலங்காரம், s. A head-dress. See தலைக்கோலம். (c.) தலையழிதல், v. noun. Being ruined, perishing--used in cursing. தலையவதாரம்பண்ண, inf. [prov.] To behead. See அவதாரம். தலையழுக்கு, s. [prov.] Uncleanness of the head. 2. (com. modeste.) Catamenia, மகளிர்தொடக்கு. தலையளிக்க, inf. To preserve, காக்க. (p.) தலையாகுமோனை, s. Rhyming of the first letter in each line. See மோனை. தலையாகெதுகை, s. A rhyme. See எதுகை. தலையாடி, appel. n. The topmost part of the trunk of a tree, commonly of a palm as unfit for use. தலையாட்டம்--தலைநடுக்கம், v. noun. Shaking of the head from age, palsy, &c. தலையாயார், s. (plu.) Cheif persons, the eminent, பெரியோர். (நீதிநெறி.) தலையாய்ச்சல், v. noun. [prov.] The first process, time, &c., the front part. தலையாரி, s. Bailiff, peon, a village watchman, or any native officer to execute the commands of a Magistrate. அதிகாரிவீட்டிலே திருடித் தலையாரிவீட்டிலே வைத்தான். He stole from the headman and placed what he stole in the watchman's house. தலையாரிவசம்பண்ண, inf. To commit to the watchmen. தலையாறு, s. The source of a river. தலையான, adj. Principal, chief. தலையானவன், appel. n. A chief. தலையிட, v. a. inf. To engage in, to ventrue on, to undertake, to take on one's self, to meddle with, to intermeddle, to concern one's self in. அதிலேயேன்தலையிட்டுக்கொள்ளுகிறாய். Why do you interfere in that business? தலையிடி, s. (inf. தலையிடிக்க.) A throbbing headache. தலையிலெடுத்துவிட--தலையில்தூக்கி விட, inf. To assist another to take up a load. தலையிலெழுத, inf. To write one's destiny in his head; ascribed to Brahma. தலையிலேறப்பார்க்க, inf. To endeavor to lord over others, or to treat them with disrespect. தலையிறக்கம், v. noun. Hanging the head through grief, chagri &c. தலையீற்று, v. noun. The first calving, yeaning, &c. 2. The firstling of cattle. தலையீற்றுப்பசு--தலையீற்றுக்கடாரி, s. A cow that has calved but once. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To break the head; i. e. to rack the brains and take great trouble in calculations, intricate business, &c. எவ்வளவாய்த்தலையுடைத்துக்கொண்டாலுங்கே ட்கிறானில்லை. Though I break me head for him. ever so much, he does not regard me. தலையுவா,s. The new moon. (p.) தலையெடுக்க, inf. To rise in circumstances, to recover one's standing. 2. To return to the attack when beaten by force. 3. To become eminent, celebrated. distinguished. 4. (lit.) To raise the head. தத்திக்குத்தித்தலையெடுத்துக்கொண்டான். He has risen in life, after many misfortunes. தலையெடுப்பு, v. noun. Amendment of circumstance. 2. Recovery from ruin. 3. Growing up, and establishing one's self in life, as a youth. 4. Loftiness. eminence, superiority, distinction. 5. Holding the head erect. தலையெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசாதே. Don't be arrogant in your remarks. தலையெடுப்பானகோபுரம். A lofty tower. தலையெழுத்து, s. Destiny, fate, as supposed to be written in the head by Brahma, according to the actions of previous births, தலைவிதி. 2. Signature to a bond or instrument, inserted at the beginning. 3. The heading or title of a book. 4. The first or capital letter in a writing. தலையேறுதண்டம், s. [prov.] Punishment above what one is able to bear. 2. (fig.) Excessive trouble or labour; compulsory service, அநியாயதண்டம். தலையைக்கொடுக்க--தலைகொடுக்க, inf. To step forward in one's behalf, in a case of exigency. 2. To expose one's self to danger for another. தலையைச்சுற்றியெறிய, inf. To detest utterly; to reject with disgust, disdain and scorn. தலையைநடுக்க, inf. To feel dizziness, sickness, slight intoxication--as from betel, tobacco, spirits, &c. தலையோடு, s. The skull. தலைவணங்க, inf. To do homage. 2. To fall or bend down--as corn in the field. See தலைமடங்க. தலைவரி, s. Poll-tax. 2. Heading. தலைவலி--தலைநோ, s. Headache. இதுதலைவலிதான். This is a task uselessly imposed. தலைவலியுங்காய்ச்சலுந் தனக்குவந்தாலல்லோதெ ரியும். Headache and fever, are know to the sufferer; i. e. each one knows his own trials. தலைவழிய, inf. To over-flow, as a cup or vessel. தலைவறை, s. A head land, cape, promontory. (Rare.) தலைவன், s. (plu. தலைவர், தலைவமார்.) A chief, a head man. 2. A king, a ruler, a governor. 3. An elder brother. 4. A husband. 5. A superior, a senior. (சது.) 6. A guru. 7. A master. தலைவாசகம், s. Introduction of a writing; preface, salutation, &c. முகவுரை. தலைவாசல்--தலைவாயில்--தலைவாய்தல், s. The main gate to a city, castle, house, &c. தலைவாரை--தலைவாரைப்பட்டை, s. [prov.] A basket cap, as தலைப்பட்டை. தலைவாழையிலை, s. The top leaf of a plantain tree. தலைவி, s. (mas. தலைவன்.) A lady, a mistress, a matron. 2. A wife, மனைவி. தலைவிதி, s. Fate written in the head. See தலையெழுத்து. தலைவிரிகோலம், s. Dishevelled locks of persons in a fright, in sorrow, &c. தலைவிரிச்சான், appel. n. One with matted hair, தலைமயிர்முடியாதவன். 2. A plant, சாரணை. 3. The plant செருப்படை. தலைவிரிச்சான்கூட்டம், s. A nickname given to the female sex, ஸ்திரீசனம். தலைவிரிச்சான் கூட்டந் தடியெடுத்தாலோட்டம். An effeminate mob is routed with a staff. தலைவிலை, s. The first or harvest price of grain, when it is plentiful, &c. தலைவிழுவான், appel. n. He (his head) will lie low--an expression of ill will. தலைவெட்ட, inf. To strike off the measure. 2. Personal inquiry is as a perspective. சுவாலாமுகம்--சுவாலாமுகி, s. A place, where subterraneous fires break forth, venerated by the Hindus.--Note. A celebrated Jvalamukhi exists in Lahore, to which pilgrimages are made. The soil abounds with carburetted hydrogen, which takes fire on coming in con tact with the external air, especially if a light be applied. Vents are made; and a light being brought near the orifice, a flame is kindled, which is fed by the escaping stream of gas. Shewing the face as a courtezan to allure paramours. முகங்குப்புற--முகங்கவிழ, inf. To incline the face towards the ground-used adverbially. Compare குப்புற. முகங்குறாவுதல், v. noun. Being of a sad countenance. முகங்கொடுத்தல். Granting a kind hearing. 2. Fondling or treating with great indulgence, பட்சங்காட்டல். பிள்ளைக்குமுகங்கொடாதே. Indulge not a child. முகங்கொள்ளல். Cheerfulness, as முகச்செழிப்பு. முகத்தாலடிக்க, inf. To repulse by the countenance. முகத்திரியக்குநாடி, s. [in anat.] Transverse facial artery. முகத்திலரும்ப--முகத்திலரும்பிறங்க-முகத்திலரும்புபுறப்பட, inf. [com. முகத்திலருப்ப மிறங்க, அருப்பம்புறப்பட, sometimes முகத்தில்கரி க்கோடிட.] To sprout as the hair on the upper lip of a young man. முகத்திலிரத்தந்தெறிக்கப்பேசுகிறது. Speaking as one enraged, see தெறி, v. முகத்திலீயாடவில்லை. A fly will not touch [his] face; i. e. it is is distorted with anger, &c. முகத்தில்விட்டெறிந்துபோடுகிறது.
