See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். (p.) ஈர். An adjective of இரண்டு, two --used before words beginning with vowels, &c., as இரு is used before consonants--as ஈராயிரம், two-thousand; இருபது, twenty. ஈரசைச்சீர், s. A poetic foot of two அசை, ஆசிரியச்சீர். (p.) ஈரடி, s. Two lines, இணையடி. (p.) 2. That which is bifurcate or two forked, கவர். 3. Doubtfulness, fluctuation, சந்தேகம். ஈரடிப்பயன், s. Ambiguity in conversation, equivocation, double-mindedness, உபயார்த்தம். 2. Double-dealing, acting under-handedly so as to suit both parties, கபடம். 3. Uncertainty, doubtfulness, சந்தேகம். 4. [prov.] Diverseness, disagreement--as of a report or account differently related, விகற்பம்; [ex அடி, step, course, et பயன், meaning.] ஈரடிப்பா, s. A stanza of two lines. (p.) ஈரடிமடக்கு, s. [in poetry.] Repetition of a foot or feet in two lines with different meanings, வந்தசொல்லேயிரண்டடி யினும்வரப்பாடுவது. See மடக்கு. ஈரடிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெ ண்பா of two lines--the குறள்வெண்பா. (p.) ஈரடுக்கொலி, s. Reiterated words imitative of sound--as நெறுநெறென்றுமுறிந் தது, it broke with a reiterated crash; வண்டில்கடகடென்றோடிற்று, the carriage rolled along with a rattling noise. (p.) ஈரறம், s. The two kinds of அறம், or virtuous actions according to the shasters; viz.: இல்லறம், matrimony and its accompanying household virtues; and துறவறம், the virtues of ascetic practice. (p.) ஈரறிவுயிர், s. Beings that have the sense of feeling and tasting--as snails, shells, &c., பரிசமுஞ்சுவையுமறியும்நந்துமுதலிய செந்து. (p.) ஈராசிடைவெண்பா, s. A species of வெண்பா, with two ஆசு affixed to the end of the third foot of the second line. (p.) ஈராடி--ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] A changeable state of the wind and weather, previous to the change of monsoon, indicative of rain. 2. A calm, a lull, the failing of the wind at this season, காற்றினமைவு. 3. Fickleness, hesitation, fluctuation of mind, நிலையின்மை. இக்காரியத்திலென்மனமீராடிப்படுகின்றது. In this affair my mind wavers. ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] Two wives. ஈரி, s. A play of girls, two stones being taken up from the ground while a third is tossed in the air, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. (c.) ஈரிலைப்பயிர், s. A young shoot when two leaves appear. ஈரிழை, s. Double-thread used in some kinds of cloth--as in muslin. ஈரிழைச்சல்லா, s. A muslin whose warp consists of two untwisted threads. ஈரீற்றா, s. A cow that has had two calves. (p.) ஈருடல், s. [in mythology.] Beings possessing the form, in part, of two bodies--as Vishnu manifested in the form of man and lion, இருதன்மைத்தாயவுடல். (p.) ஈருயிர்க்காரி, s. The two-lived --used of a pregnant female. (c.) ஈரெச்சம், s. See எச்சம். ஈரொட்டு, s. Uncertainty, doubt, crisis, criticalness, state of suspense, conditional bargain. (c.) நோயாளியின்காரியமீரொட்டாயிருக்கின்றது. The case of the patient is doubtful. ஈரொட்டாகச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak doubtfully, uncertainly, ambiguously. ஈரொட்டாகவாங்க, inf. To take things conditionally, that is, if approved; or, as a merchant, to pay for them if sold. 6)

uṟṭṭai (p. 67) s. [prov.] A bad smell, stench, offensive smell--as of a dead carcass, bugs, &c., துர்க்கந்தம். உறட்டைநாற்றம்--உறட்டைமண ம், s. Stench, stink, offensive effluvia. உறட்டையடிக்க--உறட்டைவீச, inf. To diffuse itself as an offensive, or disgusting fume, துர்க்கந்தம்வீச. 68)

uṟṇṭai (p. 67) s. Opposition, dissension, முரட்டுத்தனம். 2. Annoying, harassing, vexing; mischievous, or offensive, sport--as pinching, pushing, &c., தொந்தரவு செய்கை. 3. A kind of offensive smell--as of bugs, some kind of fish, rancid ghee, &c., துர்க்கந்தம். (c.) உறண்டைக்குநிற்க, inf. To disagree, dissent. உறண்டைத்தனம், s. A gross, sour disposition, முரண்டுத்தனம். உறண்டைநாற்றம், s. Stink, stench, offensive effluvia--as of dry fish, any thing rancid, &c. உறண்டையடிக்க--உறண்டைவீச, inf. To smell offensively-as dried fish, &c., துர்க்கந்தம்வீச. உறண்டையாட--உறண்டையிட, inf. To annoy, harass, vex, அலைக்கழிவு செய்ய. 71)

uṟpātam (p. 69) s. A portent, an evil omen--as a prodigy, or preternatural phenomenon, துர்க்குறி. 2. Any public calamity--as an earth-quake, hurricane, கொ டுமை. Wils. p. 144. UTPADA. 3. [vul.] Sometimes used for deep research, great discrimination, நுண்ணறிவு. (p.) ஒருவனிருவருதரத்துமுடனுற்பவித்தஉற்பாதம்வெருவி. Dreading the portentous birth of the same infant from two different mothers, partly from one and partly from the other. உற்பாதபிண்டம், s. Great wit. உற்பாதமாய்நினைக்க, inf. ūttai (p. 70) s. Filth connected with the teeth, body, &c., excrement, excretion, &c.; any ceremonial uncleanness especially from catamenia, சரீரவழுக்கு. 2. Filth in general, dirt, foulness, stain, tarnish, அழுக்கு. 3. (p.) Butcher's meat, flesh, fish, ஊன். ஊத்தைக்குவிளாங்காய்சேர்ந்தாற்போலிருக்கிறது... The union of a person with another as bad as himself is like eating wood apple with unclean teeth. ஊத்தைபோகக்குளித்தவனுமில்லைப்பசிபோகத்தின் றவனுமில்லை. None washes himself so as not to require it again, nor does any one eat so as not to hunger again. ஊத்தைகுடியன், s. A kind of goblin, ஓர்பிசாசு. ஊத்தைச்சீலை, s. Menstruous cloth, சூதகச்சீலை. 2. Dirty cloth, or clothes, அழுக்குச்சீலை. ஊத்தைதாங்க, inf. To bear dirt, &c.--as cloth without showing it. ஊத்தைதேய்க்க--ஊத்தைபுரட்ட, inf. To rub the body in bathing. ஊத்தைநாறி, s. A dirty slut, துர்க்கந்தமுடையவள். [vul.] 2. A tree, பீ நாறி. ஊத்தைபுரள, inf. To be dirtied-as clothes, &c. ஊத்தைப்பல்லன், s. A man with dirty teeth. ஊத்தைப்பாண்டம், s. An unclean vessel, அழுக்குப்பாத்திரம். 2. (Met.) The body, உடல். ஊத்தைப்பிணம், s. A putrid corpse or carcass, நாறியபிணம். 2. The vile body (as spoken of by ascetics, &c.), உடம்பு. ஊத்தைப்பிணமாய்நாறுகிறது. It stinks like a corpse. ஊத்தையெடுக்க, inf. To remove the tarnish from jewels, a stain from a silk or other cloth. 2)

eṭṭu (p. 73) s. The number eight denoted by அ, ஓரெண். 2. The eighth day funeral ceremony when food is presented to the manes of a deceased person, இறந்தஎட்டாம் நாட்சடங்கு; it is often contracted to எண். 3. Desire, ஆசை, impr. for எட்டை. எட்டிலேபத்திலே. Seldom, now and then. எட்டுக்குச்சோறிட்டுவைக்க. [prov.] To set rice, curry and other eatables for the deceased in the eighth day ceremony--as எட்டாந்துக்கங்கொண்டாட. எட்டுமிரண்டுமறியாதவன். A very dolt, an ignoramus. எட்டடிவிரியன், s. A kind of viper. எட்டனுருபு, s. The form of the eighth or vocative case. எட்டிலொன்று, s. One of eight things, one-eighth. எட்டுச்சார், s. [prov.] Two four square houses connected together. எட்டுத்திக்கு--எண்டிசை, s. The eight cardinal points or regions protected by as many supernal regents the supposed guardians of the earth. எட்டெட்டு--எவ்வெட்டு. Eight by eight-eight to each, eight of each. When used adjectively, எட்டு becomes எண்--as எண்ணெட்டு, eight times eight. எண்கணன், s. Brahma the eighteyed, பிரமன். எண்காற்புள், s. [in mythology.] The eight-footed bird. See சரபம், சம்பரம் and சிம்புள். எண்குணம், s. The eight divine attributes. See குணம். எண்குணத்தான்--எண்குணன், s. He who possesses the eight attributes-the perfect one--a term applied in நிகண் டு, to Siva, சிவன், Argha, அருகன். எண்கோணம், s. An octagon, eight-sided figure, அஷ்டகோணம். எண்சாண், s. Eight spans. எண்சாணுடம்பு, s. The human body, eight spans high, each person according to his own span. எண்சாணுடம்புக்குஞ்சிரசேபிரதானம். The head is the chief of the eight span-body; i. e. in cases of difficulty apply to the chief. எண்சிறப்புள்ளோன், s. Argha, அருகன். எண்சுவை, s. The eight poetic expressions of passion. See இரசம். எண்டோளன், s. Siva, சிவன்-the eight shouldered. (p.) எண்டோளி, s. Kali, காளி. 2. Durga, துர்க்கை. (p.) எண்ணாயிரம், s. Eight thousand. எண்ணாயிரவர், s. A class of smartha brahmans consisting of eight-thousand individuals. 2. A body of eightthousand jainas. எண்ணான்கு, s. Eight times four. எண்ணூறு, s. Eight hundred. எண்ணெட்டு, s. [prov.] Eight times eight. எண்பது, s. Eighty, எண்ணொரு பது. எண்மடங்கு, s. Eight fold. எண்மர், s. Eight persons, எட்டு ப்பேர். (p.) எண்வகைத்துணைவர், s. eri (p. 73) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், எரிய, v. n. To glow, shine, give light, பிரகாசிக்க. 2. To burn, ignite; to be injured, or consumed by fire, to be scorched, to flame, அழல. 3. To burn--as a sore, or fever; to smart, to be inflamed, புண்முதலியவெரிய. 4. To be envious, jealous, to fret, be peevish, பொறா மைகொள்ள. 6. To burn as the stomach with hunger, வயிறெரிய. 7. To suffer pain --as from a heavy load on the head, &c., தலைமுதலியனவெரிய. (c.) அடுப்பெரிகிறது. The fire upon the hearth burns. மந்தமெரிந்துபோனது. My bowels are inflamed for food. 2. I am in distress, yearning, &c. அவன்பட்டதை நினைக்கிறபொழுது என்வயிறெரிகிற து. My bowels are inflamed when I think of what he suffered. கணகணென்றெரிகிறது. It burns with excessive heat. அவனெரிபொரியென்றுவிழுகிறான். He breaks out with rage and fury, lit. saying, Burn him, fry him. எரிகரும்பு, s. Fagots, விறகு. (c.) எரிகுடல், s. A canine appetite, எரிவயிறு. (c.) எரிகுடலன், s. One who is always craving for food, தீபனமுள்ளவன். எரிகுன்மம், s. A stomachic disease, excessive heat, head-ache, &c., ஓர்நோய். எரிகொள்ளி, s. A fire-brand, கொள்ளிக்கட்டை. எரிசினம், s. Burning anger, கடுங் கோபம். எரிநரகம், s. The burning hell, ஓர்நரகம்--in distinction from others. எரிபடுவன், s. A burning ulcer or cancer, பிளவை. எரிபந்தம், s. A burning torch, a flambeau, தீவர்த்தி. 2. A kind of burning sensation all over the system from disease, எரிச்சல். எரிபிடாரி, s. An enraged or furious demoness, எரிதுர்க்கை. 2. A peevish, or fretful person-spoken disparagingly, எரிச்சலுடையவள். எரிபுழு, s. A kind of brownish, yellow caterpillar, the sight of which on leaving home, &c., is regarded as propitious, கம்பளப்பூச்சியினோர்வகை. எரிபூச்சி, s. A flying insect which, on contact, emits moisture that causes a burning smart and a discoloring of the skin, ஓர்பூச்சி. எரிமணி, s. Sparkling jewels, bright gems, பிரகாசமுள்ளமணி. எரிமுகி, s. A tree, the milk of whose seeds is pungent and caustic, and being indelible, is used in marking, சேங் கொட்டைமரம், Semicarpus anacardium. எரியவிழிக்க, inf. To look fiercely having the eyes flaming with rage, கோ பத்தோடுபார்க்க. எரிவண்டு, s. The Mylabris or blistering beetle, ஓர்வகைவண்டு. 2. An insect which strikes against the eye-ball inducing severe smarting, கண்ணிலடிக்கும் வண்டு. எரிவந்தம், s. A burning sensation in the body, எரிபந்தம். 2. (Met.) Anger, wrath, எரிச்சல். எரிவனம், s.
