oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

kṉ (p. 102) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To be heavy, to become heavy, massive, solid, thick, hard, injurated, பாரமா யிருக்க. 2. To be thick, close, crowded, numerous, பருக்க. 3. To be abundant, copious, to outweigh, &c., அதிகரிக்க; the infinitive used adverbially expresses very much. கனக்கக்கொடுத்தான். He gave plentifully. கனத்தஉடைமைக்கனர்த்தமில்லை. Solid property will not soon be injured. காரியங்கனத்துக்கொண்டது. The matter has become more serious. குற்றங்கனத்துக்கொண்டது. The crime is aggravated. குரல்கனத்துப்போயிற்று. The voice is become heavy, hoarse--as of one who has reached manhood, one who drinks liquor, &c. கனத்தஆக்கினை, s. Severe punishment. கனத்தகுடி, s. An illustrious and noble family. கனத்தசமுசாரம், s. A numerous family. கனத்ததோல், s. Thick skin--as that of a beast or of the hand, &c., hardened and thickened by labor. கனத்தநாள், s. A critical day in diseases--as the day of new or full moon, &c., when the influence of the planets is unusually powerful, aggravating disease, &c. On such days it is deemed improper to bathe, take medicine, &c. (c.). கனத்தபயிர், s. A thick crop. கனத்தபனி, s. A heavy dew. கனத்தமனிதன், s. A large heavy man. சரீரங்கனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To become heavy--as the body, by disease, humors, corpulency, &c. தலைகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To grow heavy--as the head through cold. வயிறுகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To have indigestion. 2. To eat a belly-full, to be well stuffed. 3. To become gravid; sometimes in this meaning, spoken in contempt, of pregnancy from illicit intercourse. கனப்பு, v. noun. Tax, impost--as collected from the subjects, குடிவரி. குடிவாரம், s. Share of produce to the inhabitant or cultivator--as distinguished from மேல்வாரம். குடியழிக்க, inf. v. a. To ruin a family. குடியழிய, inf. v. n. To be buried or ruined--as a family. குடியழிவு, v. noun. Ruin of a family. 2. A great evil, often hyperbolically used. குடியானவன், s. An inhabitant; emphatically a caste man, one not of a low caste. குடியியல்பு, s. Domestic life, family management. 2. Domestic order, domestic rules of management. குடியிருப்பு, s. Living--as a family, or an inhabitant; residing, குடியிருக்கை. 2. An inhabited, settled, or populated place, a village, கிராமம். 3. The parts of a village inhabited by different castes respectively. The name of the caste is commonly prefixed --as செட்டிகுடியிருப்பு, a chitties' village. குடியிறங்க, inf. To settle, tarry or halt --as a family or a tribe. குடியிற்பிறந்தவன், s. One born of a good family. குடியிற்பிறந்து குரங்காட்டமாடுதல். Being born of a good family, and falling into disgrace by bad conduct. குடியிற்பிறந்து செடியில்விழுந்தான். He was born of a good family, but married low; lit. fell into the bush. குடியெழும்ப, inf. To evacuate a house, village, &c., commonly from some unlucky and disastrous event, or anticipation. குடிவாங்க--குடிவாங்கிப்போக, inf. To remove from a place--as a family; to abandon a dwelling. 2. To migrate, to emigrate--as a family. குடியேற, inf. To settle in a new country, to colonize, to people. குடியேற்ற, inf. v. a. To settle people in a country, to stock with inhabitants, to people, to populate. குடிவாழ்க்கை, v. noun. Domestic economy, house-keeping. 2. Regulation of a household. குடிவிளங்கப்பண்ண, inf. To render a family illustrious' and prosperous. குடிவைக்க-குடியிருத்த, inf. To settle or establish a family. 2. To provide a family with the means of sustenance. சிறந்தகுடி, s. A family in prosperous circumstances. சுகவாசிக்குடி, s. A tenant; a renter or cultivator--as distinguished from மூரிக் குடி. See மூரிக்குடி. நல்லகுடி, s. A good or well-ordered family. 2. A well-settled family, a family in prosperous circumstances. நைந்தகுடி, s. An impoverished family. பசுங்குடி, s. Husbandmen. பயிர்க்குடி, s. Husbandmen, tillers. வந்தேறுகுடி, s. kuṟi (p. 132) s. Mark, sign, stamp, symbol, token, emblem, indication, அடையாளம். 2. Idea, notion, intention, suggestion, hint, insinuation, குறிப்பு. 3. Omen, presage, prognostic, forerunner, சகுனம். 4. Personal qualities, character, குணம். 5. A time, a turn--as in ஒருகுறி, once, தரம். 6. Time, days, season--as in இக்குறி, now-a-days, காலம். 7. Prognostication by observing the position and direction of a ladle let fall perpendicularly--as commonly practised by women. ஆடைக்குறி, s. A line across the ends of a cloth. கைக்குறி, s. Omens by lines on the palms; palmistry. முகக்குறி, s. Indications from the face. துர்க்குறி, s. A bad sign, a bad omen. நற்குறி, s. A good sign, a good omen. மரணக்குறி, s. Signs of death; omens of death--as pointed out by the shastras. குறிகண்டுநோதல், v. noun. [in parturition.] Labor pains after the discharge of liquor amnii, or the first presentation. குறிகாண, inf. To appear--as signs, or symptoms. 2. To forebode, to betoken, to typify. 3. [in parturition.] To have slight discharges at or before the presentation. குறிபோட--குறியிட, inf. To mark, sign, line, rule, &c. குறிசுட, inf. To brand marks upon cattle. குறிக்கோள், v. noun. strenuous perseverance in any one persuit; attachment to one object, பராயணம். 2. Union, unity, congruity, ஒற்றுமை. 3. The act of comprehending or understanding, கிரகித்தல். 4. The state of being distinguished or illustrious, மேன்மைப்பாடு. குறிக்கொள்வோர், s. Persons who have their heart and mind on one pursuit or object. (நிக.) See பராயணர். குறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To conceive, comprehend, understand, கிரகித்துக்கொள்ள. 2. To be remarkable, distinguished above modiocrity, மேன்மைபட. குறிகேட்க, inf. To consult a fortuneteller, a diviner, &c. குறிசொல்ல, inf. To tell one's fortune, to divine, to presage. குறிபார்க்க, inf. To observe signd; to prognosticate. குறிபார்த்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To tell people their fortunes. குறிகெட்டவன், s. A dishonest and shameless man; an unprincipled man. குறியானவன்--குறியுள்ளவன், s. A principle man. 2. A respectable, honest, upright man; a man of principle. குறிகாரன்--குறிப்புக்காரன், s. A good marks-man. குறிதப்ப, inf. To miss the mark. 2. To fail--as events foretold by fortunetellers. குறிதப்பாமற்போட்டான். He shot at a mark without missing it; he hit the mark. குறிபார்த்துச்சுட, inf. To shoot at a mark, to aim at a goal. குறிபிழைக்க, inf. To fail--as signs of rain, &c. 2. [in love poetry.] To fail or prove deceptive--as a token, a letter, குறியிடையீடுண்டாக. குறிச்சூத்திரம், s. kulam (p. 127) s. [in poet. குலன்.] Tribe, family, lineage, race; caste, nation, people, சாதி. 2. Herd, flock, shoal, assemblage, collection, கூட்டம். 3. Kind, class, species, sort, genus, இனம். 4. The twentyseventh lunar asterism, or nacshatra; also, the time the moon accupies in traversing the nacshatra, இரேவதி. குரங்கானாலுங்குலத்திலெடு. Though an ape, let a wife be from one's own family. குலங்குப்பையிலே பணம்பந்தியிலே. Rank or caste is on the dung-hill, while wealth sits in state; i. e. the wealthy are honored. கோடாலிக்காம்பு குலத்துக்கீனம். The axehandle brings ruin to its race (by assisting to cut down trees)--spoken of a person who brings disgrace and ruin to his family. குலகன்மம், s. Customs attaching to a family, through successive generations, குலாசாரம். Wils. p. 233. KULAKARMMA. குலகாயம், s. The rules or regulations of caste, குலவொழுக்கம். இதுனக்குக்குலகாயமாயிருக்கிறது. This is the custom of your family or tribe. குலகூடஸ்தன், s. The first ancestor of a race or lineage. குலக்கொடி--குலஸ்திரீ--குலபத்தினி --குலாங்கனை, s. The lawful wife. 2. A woman reputed for chastity. 3. A woman of good family and caste, and of repute for chastity. குலக்கொழுந்து, s. A rare son, the sprout or hope of the family. குலவிளக்கு, s. A light to the family or caste-spoken of a chaste matron. குலங்கெட்டவன், s. One who has lost his caste; an object, low-caste fellow. குலசிரேட்டன்--குலஸ்தன்--குலத்தன்-குலமான், s. One born of a good family. குலட்சயம், s. The ruin or decay of a family or tribe. wills. p. 233. KULAKSHAYA. குலதருமம், s. The customs, duties, offices, &c., peculiar to, or proper for, a caste, &c. Wils. 233. KULAD'HARMMA. குலதிலகம்--குலதிலதம், s. One who is an honor to his family; the respectable head of a family. 2. Very pure lineage; eminence of caste. Wils. p. 233. KULATILAKA. குலதம்பிரான்--குலகுரு, s. A family guru, the guru of a race or tribe. குலதெய்வம், s. The family, tutelary deity. 2. The deity of the tribe. குலத்துக்குத்தக்ககுணம், s. Disposition, habits, or propensities peculiar to a caste. குலத்துக்குத்தக்கநடை, s. Behaviour suitable to one's caste. குலந்தெரிக்க, inf. To dwell on another's parentage--commonly in ridicule. குலபதி, s. The head of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 233. KULAPATI. குலப்பகை, s. Natural antagonism between different species--as between cats and dogs. 2. In-bred malice, hatred, &c., between tribes, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழி, s. Offence or malice, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழுது--குலவடு, s. Stigma on a family. 2. Meanness of caste. குலப்பரத்தை, s. A courtezan by birth, or ancestry. 2. A courtezan, not common but kept by one man; a kept mistress. குலமகள்--குலப்பெண், s. THe lawful wife. 2. A woman of good caste, reputed for chastity. குலமக்கட்கழகுதன்கொழுநனைப்பேணுதல். It is becoming in a lawful and virtuous wife to cherish and honor her husband. குலமகன், s. A man of respectable caste. 2. A legitimate son. குலமங்குதல், v. noun. Being reduced in respectability, circumstances, &c. குலமணி, s. A genuine gem; (fig.) one of an illustrious birth. குலமிலான்--குலவீனன், s. A man of low caste. குலமுறைகிளத்த--குலஞ்செப்ப, inf. To give the genealogy of a family. குலங்கூற--குலம்பேச, inf. To twit one of low parentage. 2. To boast or talk of one's own or another's high birth. குலம்புகுந்தவன், s. One who has mingled with persons of a strange caste, a term of reproach. குலம்பெயர, inf. [prov.] To be changed for the better or worse--as a tree by transplanting; to improve or degenerate. குலவித்தை, s. The arts, duties, or employments peculiar to a family or caste. குலவிருது, s. The standard or banner peculiar to a family. 2. A peculiarity or propensity in an individual, common to his family. குலாசாரம், s. The custom, usage, duties, rites, &c., of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARA. குலாசாரங்காட்டுகிறான். He betrays his family or caste propensities. குலாசாரியன், s. The family priest-as குலகுரு. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARYYA. குலாதிக்கன், s. One of high caste or family, குலசிரேட்டன். குலாபிமானம், s. Family pride, pride of birth. 2. Respectability of caste, family, &c., சாதிமானம். Wils. p. 234. KULAB'HIMANA. குலிஞன்--குலிஞ்சன், s. A person of a high family, of honorable descent, &c., குலமுள்ளோன். குலீனன், s. One of a high family, &c. Wils. p. 234. KULEENA. குலோத்துங்கன், s. The respectable chief of a family. 2. The name of an illustrious prince of the Chola dynasty. குலடன், s. An adopted son, a foster child, சுவீகாரபுத்திரன். Wils. p. 233. KULAT'A. குலகிரி--குலபர்வதம்--குலாசலம், s. The eight mountains in Jambu Dwipa, (See கிரி.) 2. Seven mountain which are supposed to be in each of the seven Dwipas. 3. The circular mountains which are fancied to surround the annular seas respectively, together with the one which sorrounds the Pushkara Dwipa. (காந்.) நற்குலம், s. A good caste or tribe. 2. An excellent kind. இதுநற்குலதீவிதிராட்சச்செடி. This is a very choice vine. இவன்நற்குலத்தான்--நற்குலத்தோன். He is a man of a high caste, or family. 20)
