aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. If any one have the possession of the house of another for ten years, and this be generally known, the house becomes his. அனுபவிப்பு, v. noun. Enjoying, suffering, experiencing. அனுபாகம், s. (Anat.) Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. Doubt, hesitancy uncertainty, conjecture, சமுசயம். அனுமானப்பிரமாணம், s. one of the eight laws of evidence, inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணத்தைக்காட்டுவது. அனுமானிக்க, inf. To neigh as a horse, குதிரைகனைக்க. 2. To doubt, hesitate, சந்தேகிக்க. 3. v. a. To imagine, infer, understand or determine by inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிய. அனுமானிதம், v. noun. iṉi (p. 57) adv. Now, immediately, presently, இப்பொழுது. 2. Henceforth, hereafter, பின்பு. 3. A particle of place, from this limit, onward, இப்பால். (நன்னூல்.) இனிக்கள்ளமில்லை. There is no more injurious, offensive matter, &c., no longer any alloy, spuriousness, &c. இனிக்காரியமில்லை. There is no further business. There is no more hope for him--said of a dying man, &c. இனிநம்மெல்லை. We are now close on our limit; we approach our boundary. இனிப்பிழைக்கிறதா? Can he possibly survive? (he will certainly die). இனிப்பேசு. Now you may speak, there is no longer any restraint. இனிப்போதும். Now there is enough. இனிமேல். Hereafter, at some future time. இனியார்? Who else? இனியாற்றாது. I am unable to proceed further (I am altogether exhausted). இனியெங்கேபோவாய்? Whither will you go next? What further resource is left you? இனியென்னசெய்வாய்? What can you do further? இனிவேண்டாம். It is needed no longer, or no more is required. பண்டறியேன்கூற்றென்பதனையினியறிந்தேன்.... Formerly I knew not, but now I know who Yama is. (குறள்.) 46)

ukam (p. 58) s. Any one of the four Yugas, an age of the world. (See யுகம்.) 2. (p.) End, முடிவு. 3. A pair, a couple, இரண்டு. உகமுடிந்தாற்போலேபேசுகிறாய். Thou speakest as if the world were at an end. உகசந்தி, s. The meeting of two Yugas--the end of the preceding and beginning of the following. ஈன்றவணிமை, s. The time immediately after calving--spoken of a cow. 2. The tenderness, delicacy, &c. of a new-born animal, கன்றினிளமை. 3. The tenderness, weakness, &c. of an animal that has recently brought forth young, இளங்கொற்றியின்பச்சுடம்பு. ஈன்றவள்--ஈன்றாள், s. A mother, தாய். 2. Parvati--as the genetrix of the worlds, பார்வதி. (p.) ஈன்றவன்--ஈன்றான், s. A father, genetor, generator, பிதா. 2. The god Brahma--as creator, பிர்மன். (p.) ஈனல், s. An ear of corn, கதிர். (p.) 2. v. noun. Yeaning, bringing forth, ஈனுகை. ஈன்றல். A verbal in the past form of ஈனுதல. (p.) இன்சொல்லினிதீன்றல். Courteous speech yields pleasure. (குறள்.) ஈற்று, v. noun. Bringing forth, ஈனுகை. 2. s. That which is brought forth, whether animal or vegetable, ஈனப் பட்டது. தலையீற்று--முதலீற்று, s. The first calving; also the first calf, the firstling. ஓரீற்றா, s. A cow that has calved but once. 46)

A particle of time and place used in combination with other words and expressing co-existence, accompaniment--a form of the third case or the social ablative, மூன்றாம்வேற்றுமையின்சொல்லு ருபு. 2. Instantly, immediately, at once, அப்பொழுதே. உடனாளி, appel. noun. Companion, co-partner, கூட்டாளி. 2. (Rott.) A man of property. உடனிகழ்ச்சி--உடனிகழ்தல்--உ டனிகழ்வு, v. noun. Co-existing, happening simultaneously. 2. A term in grammar implying co-existence, concomitan cy. உடனிகழ்ச்சிப்பொருள். ஒடுவென்பதுடனிகழ்வைக்காட்டும். The particle ஒடு shows accompaniment. உடனிலைமயக்கம்--உடனிலைமெய் மயக்கம், s. [in orthography.] The combination of two consonants of the same kind--as அக்கம், அச்சம், opp. to வேற்றுநிலை மெய்மயக்கம். உடனுக்குடனே. The very instant, at the very juncture, immediately succeeding another event. பாம்புகடித்தவுடனுக்குடனேபிரயோகம்பண்ணிக் கொண்டான். He applied the remedy as soon as the snake bit him. உடனுற்றவன், s. A connective particle variously used, ஓரிடைச்சொல். 1. எதிர்மறையும்மை, the use of உம் with an affirmative, or negative expressing probability, possibility, &c., and implying the possibility, &c., of the contrary--as, சாத்தன்வருதற்குமுரியன், Sattan may perhaps come; அவன்வரவுங்கூடும், It is possible that he may come. 2. சிறப்பும்மை, the உம் of speciality, including உயர்வுசிறப் பும்மை, or superiority and இழிவுசிறப்பும்மை, or inferiority--as, ஞானிகளுமறியார்கள்சித்திரநதிமூல ம், Even the sages are unacquainted with the source of the சித்திரம் river; இவ்வூர்ப்பூனை யும்புலாறின்னாது, Even the cats of this place will not eat flesh (so sacred is it, so vile is the practice); பார்ப்பானுங்கள்ளுண்டான், Even a Brahman has been drinking toddy; இவனைநாயுந்தேடாது, Even a dog will not regard him. 3. ஐயவும்மை, the உம் in doubt, uncertainty, indecision, equivocal forms, probability, possibility--as, அவர்பத்தாயினுந் தருவார்பதினைந்தாயினுந்தருவார், Perhaps he may give ten or he may give fifteen; மழை பெய்தாலும்பெய்யும், It may perhaps rain; பத் தானுமெட்டானுங்கொடு, Give ten, or eight, ten would be preferred, but eight may do; வரினும்வருவான், It is probable that he may come. The உம் is often suppressed. 4. எச்சவும்மை, இறந்ததுதழீஇயவெச்சவும்மை, எதிரதுதழீ இயவெச்சவும்மை, the use of உம் implying another person, thing, or event, understood, and meaning likewise, too, even--as, அவனும் வந்தான், He also is come (implying that another is come or expected); நாம்பாடவும் வேண்டும், We must sing also (as well as dance, &c.); கேட்டும்படிக்கவேண்டும், By inquiry also we must learn (as well as by other means). 5. முற்றும்பை, indicating the whole of a number or series, universality, totality--as, ஒருவருக்குமையமில்லை, None can doubt; எங்குமில்லை, no where; இருகண்ணுஞ் சிவந்தன, both eyes reddened; எவ்விடமும், every where; இரண்டையுங்கொண்டுவா, Bring them both; எல்லாரும், எவரும், ஆரும்வந்தார், all, whoever, &c. came; மிகுந்தநாலுபணத்தை யுந்தா, Give me the remaining four fanams; மூவரும், all the three persons. 6. எண்ணும் மை, a numeral connective, corresponding with, and commonly repeated with each word of the series; நீயுமவனும்வந்தீர்கள், You and he came. The particle is sometimes joined to the last only--as, சாத்தன், கொற்றன், பூதனும் வந்தார்கள், Sattan, Kottan and Poodan came. Sometimes it is wholly omitted, and a pronoun including the series used instead--as, சாத்தன்கொற்றன்இவர்கள்வந்தார்கள். Sometimes the last noun in the series is used in the plural--as, சாத்தகோற்றவர்வந்தார்கள். 7. தெரிநிலையும்மை, the உம் of ascertainment, clear perception, or decision, used of three or more things concerning which doubt has been entertained, but which is now cleared up--as, ஆணுமன்றுபெண்ணுமன்று, It is neither male nor female (but in hermaphrodite); அவருண்பதுசோறுமல்ல, பணிகாரமுமல் ல, சாகமூலபலாதிகள், His food is neither rice nor cakes, but leaves, roots and fruits, &c. 8. ஆக்கவும்மை, உம் expressive of a change of state--as, பாலுமாயிற்று, This milk became medicine also; வலியனுமாயினான், He has become even a strong man. The above eight are given in நன்னூல். 9. உம் joined to an infinitive implies விரைவு, the immediate occurrence of the event--as, துரைகட்டளையிடவுங்காரியஞ்செய்துமுடிந்தது, As soon as the magistrate gave the order, the thing was done; அவர்சொல்லவுமுலகங்களுண் டாம், As soon as he speaks worlds appear. The உம் is often omitted, but then it is less expressive--as, நானிதைச்செய்யெனச்செய்கிறான், I say this and he does it. 1. உம் added to a verbal noun in poetry, sometimes gives it a gerund-like succession of the event--as, காண்டலுமிதுவேசொல்வான், Seeing him he spoke thus; வருதலுந்தழுவிக் கொண்டான், As soon as he came he embraced. 11. உம் is associated to the social ablative with the same meaning--as, கடுங்கணைதொடுத்தலோடும், As soon as the swift arrows were shot. 12. உம் added to the infinitive serves for optative, especially in epistolary usage but not in good style--as, தாங்கள்மறுமொழியனுப்பவும், May you please to send an answer; இப்படிச்செய்யவும், May you do so, I wish you to do so. 13. உம் added to the following forms of a verb, செய்து, செய்யின், செய்தால், has the force of though, although--as, அவனறிந்தும்வரவில்லை. Though he knew, he did not come; சொல்லி னும் or சொன்னாலும்அவன்கேளான், Though you may tell him he will not listen. 14. உம் added to இல் or இன் forms of the fifth case gives the force of the comparative degree --as, கந்தனினும்வலியனே, He is even stronger than Skanda. 15. A token of reproof, menace, anger, &c., also of attention, assent, doubt, non-compliance, &c., (see ஊம்)--as, உம்மெனத்தெழித்துரப்ப, He reproved his rashness by uttering the menacing sound உம் (ஸ்காந்தம்); கதைசொல்லுகி றேன்உம்கொட்டிக்கேள், I am going to tell you a story, show that you listen by saying உம்; உம்மெனுமார்பைத்தட்டும், The guilt of Brahmanicide manifested in a phantom threatened by saying உம் and striking on its breast (திருவிளையாடல்). 16. A termination of the imperative plural, முன்னிலைப்பன்மைவி குதி-- as, நீவிர்சொல்லும், say ye. It is often used honorifically in imperative singular --as, கடவுளேநீரிரங்கும், God be merciful. 17. A termination of verbs third pers. pres. or fut. tense sing. number, also of neut. plurals--as அவன்செய்யும், He does or will do it; சிங்கங்கள்முழங்கும், The lions roar, or will roar, செய்யுமென்முற்றுவிகுதி. 18. A modification of the pronoun நீர் when it is declined in the different cases--as, உம்மை, உம் மால், &c. 19. The termination of the future relative participle, எதிர்காலப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as, உலகாளும்அரசர், Kings who govern the world. 2)

ēmakūṭam (p. 79) s. The sacred golden mount--one of the eight chief ranges. It is the second of the ranges dividing the known continent of India into nine Varshas lying south of the Ilavarata or central division, and immediately north of the Himalaya, forming with it the boundary of the Kinnara Varsha, பொன்மலை. oṟṟi (p. 84) s. Lease, a leasehold, a kind of mortgage of land, trees or cattle, அடை மானம். ஒற்றியுஞ்சீதனமும்பற்றியாளவேண்டும். Property received under mortgage or as a dowry must be taken immediate possession of. ஒற்றிக்காணி, s. Mortgaged land. ஒற்றிச்சீட்டு--ஒற்றிநறுக்கு, s. A mortgage bond, a lease. ஒற்றிமீட்க, inf. To redeem a mortgage. ஒற்றியாட்சி, s. A tenure by mortgage, ஒற்றிநிலத்தையாளுகை. ஒற்றிவைக்க, inf. To mortgage land, trees, &c., அடைமானம்வைக்க. 25)

kirakam (p. 109) s. A house, a mansion, or palace, வீடு, Wils. p. 295. GRUHA. 2. A planet, கோள். Wils. p. 34. GRAHA. The planets in the Hindu system are nine, called நவக் கிரகம், viz.: 1. ஆதித்தன் or ஞாயிறு, the sun. 2. சோமன் or திங்கள், the Moon. 3. அங்காரகன் or செவ்வாய், Mars. 4. புதன், Mercury. 5. பிரகற்பதி--பிரகஸ்பதி or வியாழன், Jupiter. 6. சுக்கிரன் or வெள்ளி, Venus. 7. சனி, Saturn. 8. இராகு, Caput draconis. 9. கேது, Cauda draconis. The last two are considered visible in eclipses of the sun and moon, இராகு being, black, and கேது red. (See under கோள்.) 3. Relation in the order of time between a vocal and an instrumental sound -- the one immediately preceding or immediately following the other; one of the ten தாளப்பிரமாணம். அவனைக்கிரகம்பிடித்தாட்டுகிறது. An evil planet is exerting its influence on him. கிரகக்கழிப்பு, v. noun. Dispelling the evil influences of planets by appropriate ceremonies, கிரகசாந்தி. கிரகங்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a ceremony to dispel disease, &c., supposed to be induced by a malignant planet, in which clay images, made for the occasion representing the planets to be appeased, are worshipped, offerings of fruits, &c., being presented, and then all cast out in a cross road, கிரகசாந்திசெய்ய. கிரகசாத்திரம், s. Science of the planets. கிரகசாந்தி, s. A ceremony to counteract or mitigate the malignant effects of planets on one's person or affairs, கிரகக் கழிப்பு. கிரகசாந்திபண்ண, inf. To perform ceremonies for counteracting the evil effects of planets. கிரகசாரம்--கிரககதி, s. Planetary motion. 2. Planetary ephemeris. 3. The phenomena of the planets in their process. 4. Ill luck (Rott.) அவனைப்பிடித்தகிரகசாரவேளைஅப்படிப்பண்ணிற் று. He acted according to his ill fate. கிரகசெபம், s. keṭu (p. 137) கிறேன், கெட்டேன், வேன், கெட, v. n. To perish; to be destroyed, annihilated, அழிய. 2. To putrefy, rot, decay; to become tarnished, damaged, marred, blighted, கேடுற. 3 To be ruined in circumstances, வறுமையுற. 4. To be violated in chastity, கற்பழிய. 5. To degenerate, deteriorate; to change for the worse, morally or physically, நிலைகெட. 6. To be emaciated, reduced; to be deformed, disfigured, உருவழிய. 7. To be defeated, overcome, தோற்க. 8. To be intrinsically bad, evil or wrong, குணங்கெட. 9. To fall into ruin; to be demolished, destroyed, நாசமுற. 1. To be lost--as an article of property, &c., dropped, stolen or otherwise, காணாமற்போக. 11. To be squandered, spent, wasted, பொருள ழிய. 12. To be worn out, சிதைய. 13. May you perish--a form of imprecation. கெட்டாற்குற்றார்கிளையிலுமில்லை. In poverty, friends are not found even among relations. கெட்டேனே. Ah! I am lost, ruined; I an undone. கெட்டுப்போனபார்ப்பானுக்குச் செத்துப்போனப சுவைத்தானங்கொடுத்தாற்போல. As if a dead cow be presented to a ruined brahman; said of an unprofitable pursuit by an incompetent person. கெட்டும்பட்டணஞ்சேர். Though to be ruined, go to the town. தரித்திரங்கெடும்படி. That the misery of poverty may cease. ஈற்றுயிர்மெய்கெடும். The final compound letter is dropped. கெடுகுடிசொற்கேளாது. A family given up to ruin will never listen to advice. கெட்டகுடியேகெடும். A ruined family will sink more and more. கெடுகாலம், s. A time of ruin, evil, drought, &c.; also used reference to retribution of evil deeds which is to come immediately. கெடுமதி, s. Wicked devices. 2. Folly, rashness, presumption. 3. Loss, ruin, waste. கெடுமதி கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியாது. Folly is blind. கெடுவான், appel. n. He who will perish--the wretch; commonly used abusively. கெட்டதனம், s. Bad disposition; badness. 2. Indecorum, incivility. கெட்டநடத்தை, s. Immoral or vile conduct. கெட்டநிலை, s. A bad state, a woful plight. 2. A dangerous profession. 3. A dangerous way or system--as of religion. கெட்டபுத்தி, s. Perverted understanding. 2. Bad counsel, &c. கெட்டமணம், s. An offensive smell. கெட்டரூபம், s. A deformed, monstrous or horrid shape. கெட்டவியாதி, s. A bad, malignant, dangerous disease. 2. The venereal or other filthy disease. கெட்டகேடு, s. Utter ruin, uselessness, unworthiness, &c.--usually as an exclamation கெட்டுப்போனவள், s. A seduced woman, a bad woman. கெடுதலை, v. noun. Ruin, அழிவு. 2. Damage, loss, detriment, injury, நஷ்டம். 3. Disaster, calamity, இடையூறு. 4. Degeneracy, vileness, evil, இழிவு. கெடுதல், v. noun. Perishing; being ruined, spoiled, defeated, &c. 2. Damage, injury, calamity, &c. 3. kaikkunīrkoḷḷ (p. 140) inf. To wash the hand, modeste for a call of nature, the hand being washed afterward. கைக்குள். Within one's power or influence. 2. Soon, immediately. கைக்குஆளில்லை. There is no body at hand to do the business. கையுங்கணக்குஞ்சரி. The expense is as great as the profit--a disadvantageous or losing concern. 5)
