akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. The rule for exemplifying a subject by examples. 7. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை. The rule for elucidating a circumstance by its opposite. 8. காரண or கருவியகத்திணை. Showing the condition or quality of a thing by its orginal cause. 9. காரியவகத்திணை. Proving a thing by its effects. 1. காரகவகத்திணை. The rule for relating an action, event, &c., to which belong the following:-- 1. செய்பவன், who. 2. செய்தொழில், what. 3. கருவிகள், by what helps. 4. பயன், why. 5. இடம் or நிலம், where. 6. காலம், when. 7. திறன், in what manner or how. 11. முன்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling events from signs. 12. பின்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling the consequences of any action. (p.) 17)

atṭṭu (p. 10) கிறேன், அதட்டினேன், வேன், அதட்ட, v. a. To rebuke authoritatively and vehemently, கண்டிக்க. 2. To make a sudden or vehement noise to frighten beasts, &c., உரப்ப. 3. To rant, hector, bluster, upbraid, &c., in order to awe, or silence. உறுக்க. 4. (பிங்.) To attempt to refute one by sophistry and blustering, அமட்ட. அதட்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To sound one's mind by menacing. அதட்டிமாடோட்டினான். Making a noise he drove away the beast. அதட்டல், v. noun. Reproving, &c. அதட்டு, v. noun. Rebuke, reproof, refutation, rant, hector, உறுக்கு. 18)

amm (p. 21) . A word calling for attention, கேளெனல், as அம்மகொற்றா. Listen, Kottan. 2. An expletive, உரையசைச்சொல், as, பயனின்றுமன்றம்மகாமம். It is plain that lust is injurious. (p.) 18)

alṭṭu (p. 27) கிறேன், அலட்டினேன், வேன், அலட்ட, v. a. To tease, trouble, importune, annoy, perplex, தொந்தரவுசெய்ய. 2. v. n. To rave, talk much-- as a crazy or delirious person, be boisterous, பிதற்ற. (c.) அலட்டி, s. [prov.] A bully, a blusterer, அலப்பி. அலட்டு--அலட்டுகை, v. noun. Teasing, importunity, அலைக்கழிப்பு. 2. Raving, incoherent talk, delirium, பி தற்று. 3. Trouble, vexation, perplexity, urgency, தொந்தரவு. (c.) அலட்டுச்சன்னி, s. A kind of convulsive fit attended with raving. 43) *

avā (p. 30) s. Desire, eagerness, avididity, greediness, craving, cupidity, ஆசை. 2. Intense or sensual desire, as lust, avarice, great hunger, thirst, &c., ஆசைப்பெருக் கம். 3. Descent, இறங்குகை. (p.) அவாவயின்விதும்பல், v. noun. The longing of a loving and affectionate husband and his wife when separated. அவாவறுக்க, inf. To extirpate the desires arising from the senses, ஆசைநீக்க, [ex அறு.] அவாவின்மை, s. Freedom from desire, exemption from avarice, lust and other sensual appetites, suppression of the passions, விருப்பமின்மை. 13) *

avāvu (p. 30) கிறேன், அவாவினேன், வே ன், அவாவ, v. a. To desire, want, விரும்ப. 2. To desire intensely, crave, covet burn with lust, பேராசைகொள்ள. 3. (fig.) To approach, கிட்ட, 4. v. n. To descend, இறங்க. (p.) அவாய்நிலை, s. An elliptical form, needing some thing to complete the sense. 2. Agreement of words--as of a nominative with a verb. (நன்னூல், and குறள்.) அவாவுதல், v. noun. ācai (p. 37) s. Desire, attachment, strong inclination, விருப்பம். 2. Avarice, lust, cupidity, concupiscence, இச்சை. (c.) 3. (p.) A quarter, region, any of the eight points of the compass, திசை. Wils. p. 124. ASHA. 4. Gold, treasure, பொன்.--Note. The desires of the senses are supposed to be all comprised in மண், பெண் and பொன்--as மண்ணாசை, the desire of land or dominion. 2. பெண்ணாசை, lust or sexual desires. 3. பொன்னாசை, desire of wealth, avarice. ஆசைகாட்ட, inf. To present a bait, attraction, to excite desire, allure. ஆசைகொள்ள--ஆசைப்பட, inf. To desire, yield to the first impressions of love, desire sexually. ஆசைபுகட்ட--ஆசைபூட்ட, inf. To engross the affections, captivate, ensnare, ஆசையிற்சிக்கச்செய்ய. ஆசைப்பெருக்கம், s. Cupidity, lust, strong desire, அவா. ஆசைப்பேச்சு, 3. Flattery, தித்திக் கப்பேசும்பேச்சு. 2. Persuasive speech, வச மாக்கும்பேச்சு. ஆசைமருந்திட, inf. To administer a love potion, give a philter, தன்வசமாக்க மருந்திட. ஆசையறுக்க, inf. To extinguish the desires or passions--one of the four good qualities, விருப்பொழிக்க. ஆசைவைக்க, inf. To desire, long for, place the affections on an object. 11)

āvl (p. 43) s. Great desire, longing, yearning--as of a mother, for her absent child, காதல். 2. Insatiable desire, hunger, avarice, lust, &c., craving, பேராசை. 3. Zeal, earnestness in a cause, அவா. iṭm (p. 45) . A common form of the seventh or locative case--expressing in, on, with, within, ஏழனுருபு. It also implies to, after verbs of motion. As a case, it is itself either declined or not.--Note. According to நன்னூல், the seventh case expresses the locality of things; it also indicates place, time, component parts, qualities and actions, the relation to the persons or things indicated, whether as naturally belonging to them, or as distinct. மணியிடத்தொளி. The lustre in or of the gem. கையினிடத்துக்கடகம். A bracelet on the hand. பனையினிடத்தன்றில். The அன்றில் bird on the palmyra. என்னிடத்து--என்னிடம். In or with me. 67)

iṇr (p. 45) s. A cluster or flowers, பூங் கொத்து. 2. A blossom, a blown flower, பூமலர். 3. Filaments of a flower, பூந்தாது. 4. The கிச்சிலி tree, Citrus, L. இணரெரி, s. A large fire consisting of many flames, பலசுடருள்ளநெ ருப்பு. இணரெரிதோய்வன்னவின்னாசெயினும் Though one causes affliction as cruel as that effected by fire of many flames. (குறள், வெகுளாமை.) 131)
