There are five kinds of அடி as a metrical line. 1. குறளடி. 2. சிந்தடி. 3. அளவடி, or நேரடி. 4. நெடிலடி. 5. கழிநெடிலடி which see. அடிகொள்ள, inf. To begin, originate, be founded, தொடங்க. அடிகோல, inf. The first furrow in ploughing. அடிச்சீப்பு, s. The first formed and best plantains of the bunch. அடிச்சூடு, s. Heat felt in the sole of the foot when walking. அடிச்சேரி, s. Suburbs. [in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. To sweep the sacred precincts of a temple as one of the duties of the சரிதைக்காரன், or religionist of the lowest degree in the Siva system, கோயிலலகிட. அலகுகட்ட, inf. To bind (charm) the mouth of a serpent, a dog, &c. 2. To charm a weapon to prevent its cutting, &c. 3. To settle an account. அலகுகழிக்க, inf. To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

Sound, harmony in music, a harmonious or musical sound, tone, note, &c., இசைப்பாட்டு. Also a term common to the different parts in music. (p.) (சது.)--The seven principal sounds or notes in the vocal and instrumental music of the Hindus are called, சுரம், in singing, and நரம்பு, on stringed instruments; they are, 1. குரல், the guttural sound, the sound coming from the throat, மிடற்றாற்குரல். 2. துத்தம், the second tone of the gamut, or நி modulated by the tongue, நாவினாற்றுத்தம். 3. கைக்கிளை, the sound caused by the palate, அண்ணத்தாற்கைக்கிளை. 4. உழை, the cerebral, or the sound coming from the head, சிரத்தாலுழை. 5. இளி, that which proceeds from the forehead, நெற்றியாலிளி. 6. விளரி, the pectoral, or that which proceeds from the breast, நெஞ்சால்விளரி. 7. தாரம், that from the nose, or nasal, மூக் காற்றாரம்.--These sounds, they compare: 1. With those of animals--as that of a peacock, a bull, a sheep, &c. 2. With the different tastes of milk, honey, &c. 3. With the different scents of jasmin, nymph&oe;a, &c.--The letters (அட்சரம்.) by which they express these notes are as follow: 1. ஆஅ. 2. ஈஇ. 3. ஊஉ. 4. ஏஎ. 5. ஐஇ. 6. ஓஒ. 7. ஔஉ.--The time or measure, (மாத்திரை,) of these notes is as follows:The 1st note குரல் contains 4 measures நான்கு குரல். 2d துத்தம் contains 4 measures நான்குதுத்தம். 3d கைக்கிளை ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுகைக்கிளை. 4th உழை ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுழை. 5th இளி ,, 4 ,, நான்கிளி. 6th விளரி ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுவிளரி. 7th தாரம் ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுதாரம். From the combinations of these notes or sounds, are formed seven different kinds of airs or tunes; (பாலை) viz.: 1. செம்பாலை, or the air in which the first note is doubled, குரலேகுரல். 2. படுமலைப் பாலை, the air in which the second and first notes are compounded, துத்தமேகுரல். 3. செவ்வழிப்பாலை, the air in which the third and the first notes are compounded, கைக்கிளையேகுரல். 4. அரும்பாலை, the air in which the fourth and the first notes are compounded, உழையேகுரல். 5. கொடி ப்பாலை, the air in which the fifth and first notes are compounded, இளியேகுரல். 6. விளரிப்பாலை, the air in which the sixth and first notes are compouned, விளரியே குரல். 7. மேற்செம்பாலை, the air in which the seventh and first notes are compounded, தாரமேகுரல்.--The differences of these tunes are as follow; viz.: 1. கொ டிப்பாலை, a tune higher than செம்பாலை. 2. விளரிப்பாலை and மேற்செம்பாலை, tunes higher than கொடிச்செம்பாலை.--The three different parts in music are: 1. மந்தவிசை, bass, or the lowest pitch--also called, மந்தரம் or காகுளி. 2. மத்திமலிசை, tenor or medium--also called, மதுரம் or சமன். 3. தாரவிசை, treble or the highest pitch-also called, உச்சம் or வல்லிசை.--The different parts are not sung together, but one after another in succession--மந்த விசை, takes its pitch in the key note of the bass--the மத்திமவிசை, in the fifth-and the உச்சம், in the octave. The term is also applied to the several notes or sounds of the octave--also called சுரம்-as the first சுரம், the second சுரம், &c., and the whole are called the சரளி or gamut. இசைகேடு, s. Dissonance, discord, want of harmony, சுரபேதம். 2. Dishonor, disgrace, ill-fame, அவகீர்த்தி. 3. Want of opportunity, inconvenience, inauspiciousness--as of a day, ஒத்துக்கொள் ளாமை. 4. [prov.] Reduced state, emaciated state, இடைந்துபோனநிலைமை. இசைகொள்ள, inf. To be renowned, கீர்த்திபெற. இசைக்குழல், s. A musical windinstrument, ஊதுகுழல். இசைத்தமிழ், s. One of the three kinds of Tamil odes, or other poetry adapted to song--also the various changes made to accommodate language to music, முத்தமிழினொன்று. இசைத்திரிபு, s. A change of tune by mistake, ஓசைப்பிறழ்வு. 2. Variation in music, இசைமாறுகை. 3. A different enunciation of the same terms, according to the different senses they are intended to convey, இசையறுத்துக்கூறுகை-as செம்பொன்பதின்கழஞ்சு, may be செம்பு ஒன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the copper is nine கழஞ்சு--or செம்பொன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the fine gold is ten கழஞ்சு. So குறும்பரம்பு may be குறும்பர் அம்பு, the army of territorial chiefs-or குறும் பரம்பு, a short board used for smoothing ploughed fields. இசைநாள், s. The twenty-fifth, also the twenty-sixth lunar mansions, பூரட்டாதி and உத்திரட்டாதி. இசைநிறை, s. [in poetry.] The use of a letter, or word to fill the measure-an expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல்; as ஏஎ யிவ ளொருத்திபேடி. Heh! This is a hermaphrodite. இசைநூல், s. The science of music. இசைப்பாட்டு, s. A melody, tune, song, காந்தாரம். இசைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati, the wife of Brahma; the goddess of speech, of music, fame, praise, &c., சரச்சுவதி. (p.) இசையுள்ளான், s. A man of fame or praise. இசையெச்சம், s. [in grammar.] Ellipsis or omission of a word, சொல் லெச்சம். இசையெடுக்க, inf. To pitch or begin a tune. இசைவல்லோர்--இசைவாணர். s. iṭukku (p. 45) கிறேன், இடுக்கினேன், வே ன், இடுக்க, v. a. To press as between two boards, நெருக்க. 2. To pinch, இடுக்கிப்பிடிக் க. 3. To take between the fingers, toes, &c., to grasp--as a crab, with its claws; to lay hold of--as with pincers, to take under arms or between two things, குறடுமுதலிய வற்றாலிடுக்க. அவள்பிள்ளையையிடுக்கிக்கொண்டுவந்தாள். Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். இடுக்குதடி, s. A double stick used to press things with--as that of a toddy-drawer to press the flower or fruit-stem of the palmyra, &c. இடுக்குபனை, s. [prov.] Palmyra trees from which toddy is drawn. இடுக்குபிள்ளை, s. A child in arms carried on the hip, கக்கத்திலிடுக்கும்பருவமு டையபிள்ளை. இடுக்குமரம், s. A kind of oilpress, எண்ணெயூற்றுமரம். இடுக்கம், v. noun. Closeness, confinement, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 2. Affliction, adversity, straits, இடுக்கண். இடுக்கப்பட, inf. intiriyam (p. 46) s. [contracted into இந்தியம்.] An organ of sense, or organ of the body, பொறி; [ex இந்திர, the soul or self, or what is with difficulty restrained by the soul.] There are three kinds of இந்திரியம், or sensual organs; viz.: those of perception, those of action and the intellectual organs. Wils. p. 133. INDRYA. I. ஞானேந்திரியம், the organs of sense or perception are five; viz.: 1. சக்கு, சட்சு or கண், the eye, the organ of sight having உருவம் or visible forms as its object. 2. சோத்திரம் or செவி, the ear, the organ of hearing, having சத்தம், (sound) as its object. 3. ஆக்கிராணம் or மூக்கு, the nose, the organ of smelling, having கந்தம், (odors) as its object. 4. சிங்குவை or நா, the tongue, the organ of tasting, having இரசம், (flavors) as its object. 5. தொக்கு or துவக்கு or உடம்பு, the surface of the body, the organ of feeling, having பரிசம், (touch or contact) as its object. II. கன்மேந்திரியம், or organs of actions are five; viz.: 1. வாக்கு, the mouth or organ of speech. 2. பாதம், the feet. 3. பாணி, the hands. 4. பாயுரு, the anus. 5. உபஸ்தம், the genitals. III. அந்தக்கரணம் or அந்தரிந்திரியம், the intellectual powers are four; viz.: 1. மனம், the organ of thought or perception, emotion. 2. புத்தி, understanding, conception, reason, intellect--the organs of examination, investigation, reflection, comparison, device, experiment. 3. ஆங்காரம், emotion, self-importance, inflation, presumption, energy, impulse, the organ of excitement, resolution, effort, &c. 4. சித்தம், volition, will, purpose, determination, that power of the mind which leads to the accomplishment of objects. 2. The subjugation of the passions, இந்திரியமடக்குகை. இந்திரியநுகர்ச்சி, s. Enjoyment of sense, இந்திரியானுபவம். இந்திரியாசங்கம், s. iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Condensed mercury, சூதக்கட்டு. இரசக்கிணறு--இரசக்குழி, s. A pit or mine where quick-silver is obtained. இரசக்குடுக்கை, s. A little bottle of mercury. இரசசிந்தூரம், s. Red precipitate of mercury. இரசஞ்சுத்திபண்ண, inf. To purify quick-silver. இரசதாது, s. Quick-silver, சூதம். Wils. p. 698. RASAD'HATU. இரசதாளி, s. A species of plantain, கப்பல்வாழை. இரசத்தைக்கட்டிப்புடமிட, inf. To reduce mercury by decoction. இரசத்தைப்பஸ்மமாக்க, inf. To reduce mercury into powder. இரசநாதம், s. Quick-silver, இர சம். Wils. p. 698. RASANATHA. இரசபஸ்பம்--இரசபஸ்மம்--இரச பற்பம், s. Mercury reduced to white powder, a kind of muriate of mercury or calcinated mercury, சூதபஸ்பம். Wils. p. 698. RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. [improp. இதரைவாழை.] A species of plantain, பேயன்வாழை. இரசவைப்பு, s. Any preparation from mercury--as a muriate, sulphate, &c., an amalgam. இரசனை, s. Flavor, deliciousness, sweetness, delicacy, சுவை. 2. The tongue, நாக்கு. 3. Juice, sap, essence, சாறு. இரசாதிபதி--இரசாதிபன், s. [in astrology.] The sun or one of the planets presiding over fruits, vegetables, &c., for the given years, இரசவஸ்துகட்கதி காரியாங்கிரகம். இரசாபாசம், A loss of flavor, or of juice. இரசேந்திரம், s. To stitch leaves together to be used instead of plates. இலைத்திரி, s. A roll of leaf inserted in the perforation of the ear to cure the sore occasioned by piercing. இலைநரம்பு, s. The fibre of a leaf. இலைபறிக்க, inf. To pluck off leaves. இலைப்பாசி, s. A kind of plant. See பாசி. இலைப்பொல்லம், s. [prov.] Sewing leaves together, இலைதைக்கை. 2. A piece of leaf, commonly plantain, to eat from, வாழையிலைத்துண்டு. இலைமூக்கரிகத்தி, s. A kind of knife for cutting the stem of the betelleaf, வெற்றிலைக்காம்பரிகத்தி. இலையறுக்க, inf. To cut off leaves. இலையுதிர்வு, s. The fall of leaves, இலைவிழுகை. 2. An ancient forest, முது காடு. இலைவாணிகம்--இலைவாணிபம், s. Cultivation of, and trade in vegetables. இலைவாணிபர், s. Sellers of betelleaf, vegetables, &c.--one of the eighteen குடிமக்கள். இலைத்தல்--இலையிலைத்தல், v. noun. Favor bestowed on those whose heart is void of love. ஈரக்கல், s. A red stone, one of the one-hundred-and-twenty kinds of ore, குருந்தக்கல். ஈரங்கொல்லியர், s. Washermen, வண்ணார்; [ex கொல், killing; i. e. expelling moisture.] ஈரஞ்சுவற, inf. To be imbibed or absorbed--as water in the sand, or moisture in the head after bathing, &c., ஈரமுலர. ஈரநாவு, s. A slanderous tongue. ஈரநாவுக்கெலும்பில்லை. There is no bone in the tongue of a slanderer. ஈரந்துவட்டல், v. noun. Rubbing off moisture from the head and body after bathing. ஈரப்பசுமை--ஈரப்பசை, s. Moisture, dampness--as in lands, clothes, esculent roots, &c., நரம்புலராமை. ஈரப்பசையுள்ளவன், s. A benevolent man, இரக்கமுள்ளவன். 2. A prosperous man, செல்வமுடையோன். ஈரப்பலா, s. The bread-fruit tree, the wood of which is used for musical instruments, the ஆசினி, Artocarpus incisa, L. ஈரப்பற்று, s. Moisture, dampness, ஈரக்கசிவு. 2. Property, சம்பத்து. 3. Onion--the two latter are formed of வெம் and வெண், pungent and white, and காயம், pungency, Allium cepa. ஈரிக்க, inf. [vul. ஈர்க்க.] To become or be made wet, moist, damp, cool, ஈரமாக. 2. To be benumbed, stiffened, or deadened by cold or disease, to grow cold. ஈரிப்பு, v. noun. Dampness, coldness, குளிர்மை. ஈரிப்புக்காண, inf. To be morbidly, cold. ஈரியநெஞ்சம், s. The learned, persons of profound erudition, men of ability. உணர், v. noun. Feeling, perception, knowledge, intellect, உணர்வு. உணர்ச்சி, v. noun. Consciousness, feeling, intuition, perception, discernment, understanding, sensibility, knowledge, wisdom, judgment, experience, reason, learning, &c., acquiring knowledge, உணர்வு. என்காலிலேயுணர்ச்சியில்லை. My leg is devoid of feeling, affected by paralysis, &c. உணர்தல், v. noun. Being reconciled--as man and wife after a lovequarrel. ஊடலுணர்தல்புணர்தலிவைகாமங்கூடியார்பெற் றபயன். Disunion, reconciliation and the pleasures of love, those are the fruits of matrimony. (குறள்.) உணர்த்தி, s. [vul. prop. உணர்ச்சி.] Feeling. உணர்த்தியற்றவன், s. A man past feeling, one devoid of sensibility. உணர்த்தியுள்ளவன், s. A man of sensibility, one who is affected by the wants of others. உணர்வு, v. noun. Feeling, consciousness, intuition, perception, understanding, knowledge by means of the senses, உணர்கை. 2. Clear discernment, intellect, reason, தெளிவு. 3. Cessation from sleep, love quarrels, &c., ஊடலுந் துயிலுநீங்கல். 4. Acquiring of knowledge, learning, experience, acquaintance with science, &c., கற்றுணர்கை. 5. A sense, புலன். 6. Separation, நீங்கல். உணரவுணருமுணர்வுடையாரைப்புணரப்புணருமா மின்பம். To be united in friendship with the prudent who think of what they ought to think is productive of the highest felicity. (நாலடி.) உள்ளத்துணர்வுடையான். A man of great wisdom. உணர்வுகேடு, s. Forgetfulness, listlessness, inattention, உணர்ச்சியின்மை. 2. Want of understanding, அறிவீனம். நுண்ணுணர்வு, s.
