aṟu (p. 33) கிறது, ந்தது, ம், அற, v. n. To be parted, detached, separated; to break as a rope, அறுபட. 2. To cease, become extinct, perish, end, vanish, அழிய. 3. To be decided, ended, தீர. (c.) அற, inf. [used adverbially.] With a verb it expresses; 1. Wholly, entirely, quite, முழுதும். 2. Intensely, excessively, மிகவும். 3. Negation, being without, as குற்றமற, without fault. அறச்செட்டுமுழுநஷ்டம். Selling things too dearly will cause entire loss; i. e. avarice causes loss. அறப்படித்தான். He has learnt all perfectly. எழுத்தறவாசி. Read with distinct articulation. அறக்கட்ட, inf. To tie tightly, இறுகக்கட்ட. 2. To monopolize, ஒருமிக்கக் கொள்ள. அறக்காய, inf. To be over-dried, over-boiled, over-heated. அறக்கூட்ட, inf. To sweep clean or thoroughly. அறக்கூர்மை, s. Excessive sharpness as of a writing style. அறச்சிவப்பு, s. Deep red, extremely red. அறச்சிறியது, appel. n. The smallest. அறப்பாடல், v. noun. [commonly, அறம்பாடல்.] Composing poetry containing imprecations or spells.--Note. Verses of this kind are supposed sometimes to be made without design, and thus to injure the maker and others. அறப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine thoroughly, sift. 2. To take measures to defeat, ruin or injure one by defamation. அறமிகுந்தால், v. part. At most, at the utmost, by any means, with the greatest effort. அறமிகுந்துவந்தாலும்வரட்டும். If it must come (if no effort will avert it) let it come. அறவிளக்க, inf. To polish thoroughly. அறவூத--அறவைக்க, inf. To refine metals by fire, புடமிட. அறாவிலை, s. An exorbitant price. அறுகுறை, s. A headless body, கவந்தம். அறுந்தருணம், s. Emergency, exigency. அறுந்தொகை, s. A sum, number, &c. in dividing, in which there is no remainder. அறுவாய், s. The parting made in sawing a piece of timber. 2. The opening of a cut or wound. 3. A junction, a conjunction of two periods of time, extremity, end. 4. Deficiency, what is wanted to complete a whole; [ex அறு, parted, et வாய், opening.] அறுவாய்நிறைந்தவயிர்மதி. The bright moon whose waning is restored. அற்றறுதி, s. A complete end, entire ruin. அற்றறுதிபற்றறுதியாய்விட்டது. All communion is withdrawn. அற்றான், s. A poor man, தரித் திரன், 2. A sage, முனிவன். அற்றுப்போக, inf. To be lost, to cease to be. தடையற, inf. [used adverbially.] Without impediment. அறவு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, extinction. 2. Parting, separation, breach. அறவுளி, s. Incantations performed over a sick person in order to restore him. 2. Cessation, end, முடிவு. அறுதல், v. noun. Finishing, liquidating a debt. 2. s. A broken thread, string, rope, bandage, &c. அறுந்திருப்பது. 3. A mean, despicable or faulty person, உதவாதவன் அந்த அறுதலையிங்கேவரவிடலாகாது, You must not allow that vagabond to be here. தாம்புமறுதல் தோண்டியும்பொத்தல். A broken rope and a leaky water-pot. அறுதலி, s. A widow, கைம்பெ ண்; [ex அறுதல், being plucked off (the marriage jewel), et இ, fem. termination; or அறு, torn off, et தலி, contracted from தாலி, the badge of marriage.] அறுதலிமகனுக்கங்கமெல்லாஞ்சேஷ்டை. The son of a widow is mischievous throughout his whole frame. அறுதி, v. noun. End, close, termination, முடிவு. 2. Decision, decisiveness, determination--as a decisive sale, entire renunciation of a title to landed property, தீர்ப்பு. 3. s. The purchaser's possession or title to property purchased, விற்கிரயச்சீட்டு. 4. Absence, non-existence, இல்லாமை. 5. Death, சாவு. அறுதியாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is settled, completed, ended. அறுதியிட்டுச்சொன்னான். He spoke decisively. நமக்குக்கிடைத்தது நமக்கறுதி. Thus much is realized and we shall not have to part with it. அந்தப்பழக்கத்தையறுதியாய்விட்டுவிட்டேன். I have relinquished that custom entirely. அறுதிக்கரை, s. The proper and just division or distribution of land. அறுதிச்சாதனம்--அறுதியுறுதி, s. A deed of transfer, அறுதிச்சீட்டு. அறுதிச்சொல், s. A decisive word or sentence. அறுதிப்பங்கு, s. What is given in full of all demands, a final allotment. அறுதிப்பாடு, s. Being accomplished, finished, decided. அறுதியிட, inf. To determine, to point a day, &c. 55)

aḷvu (p. 33) s. Measure, degree, proportion, quantity, magnitude, size, capacity, bound, limit, compass, number, standard, வரையறை. 2. The proper or required measure, the complement number, size, weight, &c., மட்டு. 3. With உம், it expresses a limited extent of measure, time, distance, &c., as அவ்வளவும், only so far, even so much. 4. Suffixed to participles, it means when, as soon as--as பார்க்குமளவில், as soon as seen. 5. A measure or thing to measure with, அளவுகருவி. There are four kinds of measurement; viz.: 1. எண்ணல், computation. 2. எடுத் தல், weight, measurement by balance. 3. முகத்தல், measurement of capacity--as dry of fluid measure. 4. நீட்டல், measurement of extension, a long measure and land measure.--Some add a fifth தெறித்தல், jerking with finger. இராசா அளவிற்கேறிற்று. It has gone up to (the limit of) the king; i. e. it is too late now to adopt measures to prevent it. காரியத்தளவிலேயொன்றுமில்லை. There is no importance in the thing--it matters not. குலத்தளவேயாகுங்குணம். According to the caste will be the disposition. அவன்வருமளவும். Till he comes. மேகமண்டலமளவும். As high as, or as far as the region of the clouds. என்னளவிலேயிப்படிநடந்தது. It has so happened to me; at least in my case, &c. தன்னளவிலே கொண்டாடிக்கொண்டான். He limited the feast to his own circle. அளவடி, s. A line containing four metrical feet, நாற்சீரால்வருமடி. அளவடிவிருத்தம், s. A விருத்தம் verse of four lines, each of which contains four feet, நேரடிவிருத்தம். அளவழித்தாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அளவறுக்க, inf. To find out, ascertain a number and decide, வரையறுக்க. அளவற்றது--அளவில்லாதது. appel. n. That which is beyond number, measure, weight, &c. அளவாக, inf. [used adverbially.] Moderately, to a limited extent, according to. அளவிட, inf. To estimate, calculate. 2. To guess, conjecture. 3. To measure, explore, fathom. 4. To investigate, examine, search into. அவனை அளவிடக்கூடாது. One cannot fathom him. அளவிடப்படாத, neg. rel. part. Incomprehensible. அளவிடை, v. noun. Measuring, admeasurement, அளவிடுகை. 2. Estimation, calculation, guess, மதிப்பிடுகை. 3. s. Weight, நிறை. 4. Capacity, extent of one's power. நிருவாகம். சத்துருவையளவிடைபார். Estimate an enemy's power. அளவியற்றாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem. அளவிறக்க, inf. To exceed the measure, the appointed limit, &c., எல் லைகடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate a rule, மீற. 3. To exceed all bounds, be immeasurable, inconceivable, எண்ணிறக்க. அளவிறந்தபொருள், s. Immense property beyond the power of calculation, a thing incomprehensible, a mystery. அளவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Immeasurableness, countlessness, immensity. அளவுகோல், s. A land measurer's rod. அளவுநாழி, s. A stamped measure. அளவுபடுத்த, inf. To measure, ascertain, to limit. அளவெடுக்க, inf. To take a measure, dimensions, &c., of a thing. அவ்வளவு--இவ்வளவு, s. So much, so many. அவ்வளவும், Even so much, only of far, that is all. எவ்வளவு, s. How much, how many. நேற்றளவு. Up to or till yesterday, in the course of yesterday. நேற்றையளவிலேசெய்தியிப்படி. The news were so up to yesterday. இன்றளவும். Until this day, in the course of to-day. 14)

āy (p. 40) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ஆய, v. a. To select, choose, cull, தெரிந்தெடுக்க. 2. To separate, garble, pick out the refuse --as stones from rice, withered leaves from greens, &c., களைந்துவிட. 3. To inquire, investigate, examine, consider, reflect, determine after investigation, ஆராய. (p.) 4. [prov.] To gather, pluck, nip off, பறிக்க. ஆய்ந்தோய்ந்துபாராதான் றான்சாவக்கடவன். ārāy (p. 41) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ஆ ராய, v. a. To investigate, scrutinize, examine, inquire, deliberate, contemplate, explore, சோதிக்க. 2. To seek, seek for, தேட; [ex ஆர், et ஆய்.] கண்டாராய்மனமே. Consider well, O my soul. ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க, inf. To examine well, search into, inquire after. ஆராய்ச்சி, v. noun. Search, examination, investigation, deliberation, சோத னை. 2. [pers. noun.] [prov.] A sheriff or bailiff, one who has the command of the inferior officers in a court or office, a superintendent, தலையாரி. ஆராய்ச்சி--ஆராய்ச்சிமணி, s. That which cannot be easily understood, அறிதற்கரியது. (c.) ஆழஞ்சோதிக்க, inf. To prove, examine, examine one`s depth of knowledge, &c. ஆழமானகருத்து, s. intiriyam (p. 46) s. [contracted into இந்தியம்.] An organ of sense, or organ of the body, பொறி; [ex இந்திர, the soul or self, or what is with difficulty restrained by the soul.] There are three kinds of இந்திரியம், or sensual organs; viz.: those of perception, those of action and the intellectual organs. Wils. p. 133. INDRYA. I. ஞானேந்திரியம், the organs of sense or perception are five; viz.: 1. சக்கு, சட்சு or கண், the eye, the organ of sight having உருவம் or visible forms as its object. 2. சோத்திரம் or செவி, the ear, the organ of hearing, having சத்தம், (sound) as its object. 3. ஆக்கிராணம் or மூக்கு, the nose, the organ of smelling, having கந்தம், (odors) as its object. 4. சிங்குவை or நா, the tongue, the organ of tasting, having இரசம், (flavors) as its object. 5. தொக்கு or துவக்கு or உடம்பு, the surface of the body, the organ of feeling, having பரிசம், (touch or contact) as its object. II. கன்மேந்திரியம், or organs of actions are five; viz.: 1. வாக்கு, the mouth or organ of speech. 2. பாதம், the feet. 3. பாணி, the hands. 4. பாயுரு, the anus. 5. உபஸ்தம், the genitals. III. அந்தக்கரணம் or அந்தரிந்திரியம், the intellectual powers are four; viz.: 1. மனம், the organ of thought or perception, emotion. 2. புத்தி, understanding, conception, reason, intellect--the organs of examination, investigation, reflection, comparison, device, experiment. 3. ஆங்காரம், emotion, self-importance, inflation, presumption, energy, impulse, the organ of excitement, resolution, effort, &c. 4. சித்தம், volition, will, purpose, determination, that power of the mind which leads to the accomplishment of objects. 2. The sperm, seed of men, விந்து. இந்திரியகோசரம், s. Perceptibleness, capability of being determined by the senses, இந்திரியத்துக்குவிஷயமாகுகை. Wils. p. 132. To have a special liking for any kind of food. நாவுக்குருசிபாவுக்குருசி. That which is agreeable t the tongue will be so to poetry. உருசிப்படுத்த, inf. To cause one to relish, like, &c.; to excite desires, உருசிக்கச்செய்ய. 2. To impart flavor, make relishable, to season, சுவைப்படுத்த. உருசிப்பேச்சு, s. An alluring discourse. உருசியறிந்தவன், s. uṟu (p. 67) கிறேன், உற்றேன், வேன், உற, v. n. To be, to exist, உண்டாக. 2. To feel, experience, suffer, enjoy, experience sensations--as heat, cold, பரிசிக்க. 3. To be in contact, to join closely, unite with, combine, கூட. 4. To happen, occur, befall -- as a good, or evil, சம்பவிக்க. 5. To accrue--as riches, சேர. 6. To profit, turn to account, பயனுற. 7. To obtain, கிடைக்க. 8. To arrive at, reach, வர. 9. To belong to peculiarly, to be appropriate, பொருந்த. 1. To be situated at, or be in a place, இரு க்க. 11. To dwell, reside, தங்க. (p.)-Note. This word is often joined to verbals or verbal roots to form new verbs, and the infinitive and other parts are used adverbially to express intensity, entireness, &c.--as குழுற்றது, it surrounded; ஊடுறச்சென் றது, it pierced, or penetrated. உறச்சிவந்தது. It is become very red. உறவளைக்கும்வில். A bow bent to the utmost. சுகமுறுநித்திரை. Refreshing sleep. கிலேசமுற்றேன். I became sorrowful. விருப்பமுற்றேன். I have conceived a desire. இன்பமுற்றேன். I was rejoiced. பயமுற்றேன். I grew frightened. நோயுறும்போது. When sickness befalls-பாவியருறும்பழி. The evil endured by the wicked for their sins. (இராமா.) சொல்லலுற்றேன்--சொல்லுற்றேன். I said, I have treated on--a formal or dignified mode of expression among authors. மீகீழிதழுறப்பம்மப்பிறக்கும். The letters ப் and ம் are produced by the contact of the upper and lower lips. (நன்.) முந்தினார்பின்னுறக்கடுகவோடினான். He ran so swiftly that all who started before him were left behind. உறவற்ற, inf. To dry up entirely. உறுந்தருணம்--உறுந்தறுவாய், s. Emergency, exigency, particular juncture. உறுவதுகூறல், v. noun. Giving an indirect answer to a question, எண்வகை விடையிலொன்று. உற்ற, rel. part. Uncommonly devoted, trusty. உற்றசெய்தி, s. True report, true news. உற்றது, appel. n. The thing as it is, the whole of it. உற்றதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak the truth. உற்றதுசொல்லஅற்றதுபொருந்தும். By telling the truth, misunderstandings are adjusted; truth is the surest resource through life. உற்றபண்புரைப்போர், s. Messengers, தூதர். (p.) உற்றமனிதன், s. A fit or proper person to transact an affair, one who can be trusted. உற்றவன், s. A friend, a relation, உறவோன். உற்றவிசேஷம், s. A proper or suitable expression. உற்றளவு, s. An accurate, genuine, fair measure, சரியளவு. 2. Genuine state of things, real news, உள்ளதன்மை. உற்றறிய, inf. To feel by the touch, be sensible to touch--as plants, &c., பரிசித்துணர. 2. To experience, to know by experience, பயின்றறிய. உற்றாண்மை, s. [prov. prop. உற்ற வுரிமை.] Interest as among near relatives and friends. 2. Close or intimate friendship, attachment. உற்றாண்மைபேச, inf. To speak for--as a near relative, or friend interested in one's welfare. உற்றாராய, inf. To investigate deeply, attentively, minutely, &c. உற்றார்--உற்றோர், s. Relations, உறவோர். 2. Friends, சிநேகர். உற்றிடம், s. An emergency, exigency, ஆபத்து. (p.) 2. (Rott.) A refuge, அடைக்காலம். உற்றிடத்துதவ, inf. To help on an emergency. உற்றுக்கேட்க, inf. To listen attentively. உற்றுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly. 2. To examine minutely. உற்றுழி, s. Emergency, exigency, time of expected evil, imminent danger, &c., வருத்தமானகாலம். புலம்புற, inf. To utter lamentation. பயமுற, inf. To be afraid. கையுறாப்பொருள், s. A thing which does not come near to hand; i. e. which is obtained with great difficulty. உரனுற, inf. To obtain strength or force. உறல், v. noun. Being near, coming, approaching. உறுபு, v. noun. Costiveness, thickness, narrowness, செறிவு. 2. Abundance, plenty, மிகுதி. உறுவிக்க, inf. uvamai (p. 66) s. Comparison, simile, similitude, உவமாலங்காரம். 2. [in the scripture translations.] A parable. The common rhetoric gives twenty-four varieties of உவமை, the simplest form is by supplying terms expressive of similitude--as, சந்திரன்போன்றமுகம், a moon-like face. Wils. p. 156. UPAMA. உவமைசொல்ல, inf. To compare. உவமைத்தொகை--தொகையுவ மை, s. The omission of the sign of comparison--as மதிமுகம் for மதிபோன்ற முகம். உவமையகத்திணை, s. [in rhetoric.] A kind of metaphor--as when it is said, குயில்வந்தாள், meaning thereby a female thus compared to that sweet-noted bird. உவமையாய்ச்சொல்ல, inf. ūṭu (p. 69) s. [as உள்.] The inside, that which is intermediate, between, நடு. (சத. 18.) 2. [vul.] Wool, thread woven across the warp, தார்நூல்.--Note. Commonly ஊடு as an affix governs the dative--as அவர்களுக்கூடேவந்தான், he came between them. இந்தஅலுவல்களுக்கூடேயிதையுமெப்படிச்செய்வே ன். How can I possibly do this in the midst of so much business? கனவூடும். Even in a dream-- (பார.) ஊடறுக்க, inf. Friendship with the base is like a hard block thrown against the knee. மயிரூடாடாநட்புச்சிறிதுபொருளுடாடக்கெடும்... Friendship so close as not to admit of even a hair-like interruption may be destroyed by pecuniary dealings. ஊடாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search, examine, &c., to look into, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. கல்வியிலூடாடிப்பார். Look into learning, learn. ஊடாட்டம், v. noun. Familiarity, intercourse, intimacy, பழகுகை. ஊடாட்டம்பண்ண, inf. Counter magic, magic resorted to in retaliation, sorcery, &c., எதிரேவல். எதிரொலி, s. Echo, reverberation of sound. பிரதித்தொனி. எதிரொலித்தல், v. noun. Echoing, resounding. எதிர்கொள்ள--எதிர்கொண்டழைக் க, inf. To meet and receive a guest, a great person, a wedding party, &c., coming to one's house, சந்திக்க. எதிர்கோள், v. noun. Meeting in the way, meeting or receiving a person, எதிர்கொள்ளுகை. விருந்தெதிர்கோடல், v. noun. Inviting guests, or devotees, religious mendicants, &c.--one of the duties enjoined on a householder as the condition of his own participation of the good things of providence. See இல், house. A slanting timber forming a continued line with the ridge and uniting in an angle formed by the slanting hip-rafters on either end of a hipped or bungalo roof. எதிர்ச்சாட்சி, s. Counter testimony; a witness brought to disprove previous testimony, மாறானசாட்சி. எதிர்ச்செட்டு, s. Competition in trade, ஒருவன்விற்பதற்குமாறாகவிற்கை. 2. [prov.] Trading at second hand, buying and selling again directly at a small profit. எதிர்நடை, s. The act of doing perversely. 2. Opposite course. எதிர்நடைக்கணக்கு, s. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. An arrangement of a series of verbs, &c. in the contrary order to that in which their nouns occur. See முறை நிரனிறை. எதிர்நிலை, s. Resistance, opposition, எதிர்நிற்கை. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை, s. [in amatory verse.] The rule for elucidating a circumstance by the opposite case, contrast. எதிர்நிற்க, inf. To stand before one, முன்னிற்க. 2. To oppose, to be perverse, or contumacious, மாறுபட்டுநிற்க. 3. To stand against, withstand, cope with, போர்செய்ய. எதிர்நோக்குநட்சத்திரம், s. A nutchattra whose influence has respect to movements and interests in the different points of the compass, not an astrological, but a common phrase; the same as எதிர்நாள், or more properly, பக்கநாள். எதிர்பார்க்க, inf. To wait for an expected person, வரவுபார்த்திருக்க. 2. To expect, to look forward, காத்திருக்க. இருகாரியத்திற்கெதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. To hope for a thing, to be in expectation of it. எதிர்போக, inf. To go against, oppose, meet as an army, assail, எதிராய் போக. எதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet as in the way, சந்திக்க. 2. To happen, occur, தோன்ற. எதிர்ப்படுத்த, inf. To confront, எதிராக்க. 2. To stir up strife, cause opposition, பகையாக்க. எதிர்ப்பாடு, v. noun. Meeting, எதிர் ப்படுகை. எதிர்ப்பாய்ச்சல், s.
