aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. He is urgently soliciting money. ஆடவை, s. Place of dancing, நிருத்தசபை. ஆடி, s. A dancer. ஆடித்திரிய, inf. To make much ado about a thing. 2. to go around or be too much in company. ஆடுகால், s. The supporters of a lever for a well-sweep. ஆடுதொடை, s. The inner fleshy part of the thigh. ஆடுமாலை, s. [prov.] A gay, lively, laughing girl, young woman. ஆடல், v. noun. Moving, shaking, rocking, &c. 2. Fighting, battle, war. 3. Being powerful. 4. Victory. 5. Playing. 6. Coition. 7. Dancing. 8. Washing, bathing. 9. Boasting, friendly word or conversation. 1. Saying. ஆடல்பாடல், s. Singing and dancing. ஆடற்றரு, s. A dancing song used in comedies. ஆட்டம், v. noun. Motion, vibration, agitation, vacillation, rocking, swinging, rolling or pitching (at sea, &c.), அசைவு. 2. Dance, play, game, prank, an act of play, a turn-about, a turn, once playing the game, விளையாட்டு. 3. Likeness, the assumption of a character, profession, conduct, shape in imitation, தன்மை. 4. Moving about, energy, vigor, action, முயற்சி. (c.) அங்கேபோக ஆட்டமாடுகிறான். He insists on going there, (contrary to advice.) இந்த ஆட்டத்துக்கெல்லாமவனசையான். He will not be moved by this agitation. அவன் ஆட்டந்தீர்ந்தது. He power, bustle, agitation, harassing, &c. has come to an end. அவனிரண்டாட்டம் விளையாடினான் ஓராட்டந் தோற்றுப்போனான். He played two games and lost one of them. ஆட்டமடித்தல், v. noun. A play among children in which the புள்ளு, or small stick, being swung round so as to fly t a distance, is struck by the கிட்டி, or larger stick. ஆட்டமெடுக்க, inf. To enter on a rash or odd enterprise, to beat another in the above play. 10)

irṇṭu (p. 49) s. and adj. Two, இரண்டா மெண்.-- As an adjective prefix, it often becomes இரு and ஈர், double, இரட்டிப்பான-as இருநிறம், two colors, a double color; ஈர லகு, two syllables. See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். I will give double the quantity. பத்திரட்டி, s. Twice ten. இரட்டிக்க, inf. To double, repeat, reiterate, இரட்ட. 2. (c.) To return --as a disease, வியாதிமக்களிக்க. 3. To plough the second time, always crosswise, இரண்டாமுறையுழ. 4. To differ from, be discrepant, &c., வேறுபட. 5. To disagree--as different kinds of food eaten at once, to be indigested, போசனம் ஒவ்வா திருக்க. இந்தச்சாட்சியந்தச்சாட்சிக்கிரட்டிக்கிறது. This evidence differs from the other. மகரமிரட்டித்தது. The consonant ம், is doubled. நோயிரட்டிக்கின்றது. The pain is double what it was. 2. The disease has returned. இரட்டித்தசெலவு, s. Double expense. இரட்டித்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To repeat, say a thing a second time. 2. To make a discrepant statement, or a statement different from that of another. உழவிரட்டிக்க, inf. To plough the second time. இரட்டிப்பு, s. Two-fold, twice as much, a double quantity. 2. v. noun. Doubling, making two-fold. இரட்டு, s. Two-fold, இருமடங் கு. (p.) 2. (c.) Double-threaded cloth, either coarse or fine, sack-cloth, ஓர்வ கைச்சீலை. இரட்டுப்பை, s. A sack made of coarse cloth. இரட்டுறமொழிய, inf. To state a rule so that it may comprise another, the one plainly apparent, the other to be made out by study; or the use of terms of double meaning either of which serves to make good sense, though the ideas will be wholly different; or the use of terms by which one thing is employed and another implied. See உத்தி. (p.) இரட்டை, s. Two things naturally conjoined--as a double fruit, leaf, &c.; twins, two things alike, இரண்டொன் றானது. 2. (p.) Gemini in the zodiac, two females, மிதுனராசி. 3. Even, even numbers--opposed to ஒற்றை, இரட்டையெண்-as 6, 8, 24, &c. 4. A couple, tow, சேரடு. 5. A female songster, பாடுவிச்சி. ஒற்றையிரட்டைபிடித்தல். A kind of play, playing at odd and even. இரட்டைக்கிளவி, s. Double words imitating certain sounds, ஒலிக்கு றிப்பில்வருமிரட்டைமொழி--as சளசளவெனமழை த்தாரைகான்றன. (The clouds) poured a shower of rain, with a murmuring sound. (இராமா.) (p.) இரட்டைச்சுழி, s. The symbol ை of the vowel ஐ. 2. Two curls in horses, cattle, &c.--as இருசுழி. இரட்டைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the same word is repeated through the line, (see தொடை)--as ஒக் குமே யொக்குமே யொக்குமே யொக்கும் விளக்கினு ட்சீறெரியொக்குமே யொக்கும் குளக்கொட்டிப்பூவி னிறம், the color of the flower of the water-plant கொட்டி, resembles the delicate flame of the lamp. (p.) இரட்டைப்படவெண்ண, inf. To count even, making a series increasing by a common ratio--as 2, 4, 6, &c. இரட்டைப்பாக்கு, s. An arecanut with two eyes producing, if planted, two trees. இரட்டைப்பிள்ளை, s. Twins. 2. [prov.] A double young areca or cocoa-nut tree. இரட்டைப்புரிக்கயிறு, s. A rope or string made of two strands. இரட்டைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting of twenty verses of வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, or நேரிசைவெண்பா and ஆசி ரியவிருத்தம், and composed according to the rules of அந்தாதி. See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இரண்டகம், s. Treachery, perfidy, duplicity, dissimulation, double-dealing, துரோகம். (c.) இரண்டகம்நினைக்க, inf. To frame a treacherous design. இரண்டகம்பண்ண, inf. To betray, act treacherously, perfidiously. இரண்டகவாதி, s. A treacherous person, an insincere friend, துரோகி. இரண்டன்மை, s. Sameness, (lit.) being not two--as அத்துவைதம், which see. இரண்டாந்தரம், s. Secondary kind or class--as of cloth, tobacco, &c. 2. The second time. இரண்டாம்பட்சம், s. Second or secondary class, kind, &c., not the most approved. இரண்டாம்பாட்டன், s. A great grand-father, மூதாதை. இரண்டாவது, s. That which is the second. 2. adv. Secondly. இரண்டுக்குப்போக, inf. [vul.] To go to stool, (usage of children.) இரண்டுக்குற்றது, s. Critical juncture, a crisis in a disease, சாத்தியமோவசர த்தியமோவென்பது. 2. Dubiousness, possibility of two contrary impending issues, a double probability, இதுவோவதுவோவெ ன்கை. இரண்டுங்கெட்ட நேரம், s. [vul.] The dusk of the evening, used for an inauspicious or untimely season, &c. இரண்டுங்கெட்டவன், s. An indifferent man, neither good nor bad. இரண்டுசொல்ல, inf. To evade, refuse, give an indirect or evasive answer. இரண்டுசெய்ய, inf. To act perfidiously. 2. To act against one's command, to behave disobediently. இரண்டுநினைக்க, inf. To be hypocritical, to meditate treachery under a show of honesty. இரண்டுபட, inf. To vary from, differ in the issue or event, disagree, dissent, become opposed, வேறுபட. 2. To be discrepant, appear discordant, &c., ஒற்றுமையின்றாக. 3. To be doubtful, ஐயுற. இரண்டுபடுத்த, inf. To disjoin, disunite, cause to differ, sow dissension. இரண்டுபண்ண, inf. To act treacherously. இரு. Two, as இரண்டு and ஈர். இருகந்தம், s. Good and bad smell, இருமணம். (p.) இருகால், s. [vul. இருக்கால்.] Twice, இரண்டுவிசை. 2. A treatise written in confutation of the above. இருசீரகம், s. The two different kinds of சீரகம்--as நற்சீரகம் and கருஞ்சீரகம், which see. இருசுடர், s. The two lights--the sun and moon, சூரியசந்திரர். (p.) இருசுடர்த்தோற்றம், s. One of the divisions of பெருங்காப்பியம், சூரியசந்திரோத யங்களின்வருணனை. (p.) இருசுழி, s. A double curl as a mark. இருசுழியிருந்துண்டாலுமுண்ணும் இரந்துண்டா லுமுண்ணும். A person of a double curl may live in luxury or be reduced to beggary. இருதலைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand burning at both ends. ஒருதலைக்கொள்ளிநடுவிலெறும்பைப்போலானே ன். I am like an ant between two fires; i. e. I am in straits. இருதலைப்பட்சி, s. A kind of bird fabled to have two heads. இருதலைமணியன், s. A snake said to have two heads--one at each end. இருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. Two-edged sword or knife. இருதிணை, s. The two classes உயர்திணை and அஃறிணை into which Tamil nouns are divided. (See திணை.) 2. The two classes into which creatures are divided, இயங்குதிணை and இயங்கரத்திணை, which see. (p.) இருநிதிக்கிழவன், s. Kuvêra, கு பேரன். (p.) இருநினைவு, s. (p.) ஈர். An adjective of இரண்டு, two --used before words beginning with vowels, &c., as இரு is used before consonants--as ஈராயிரம், two-thousand; இருபது, twenty. ஈரசைச்சீர், s. A poetic foot of two அசை, ஆசிரியச்சீர். (p.) ஈரடி, s. Two lines, இணையடி. (p.) 2. That which is bifurcate or two forked, கவர். 3. Doubtfulness, fluctuation, சந்தேகம். ஈரடிப்பயன், s. Ambiguity in conversation, equivocation, double-mindedness, உபயார்த்தம். 2. Double-dealing, acting under-handedly so as to suit both parties, கபடம். 3. Uncertainty, doubtfulness, சந்தேகம். 4. [prov.] Diverseness, disagreement--as of a report or account differently related, விகற்பம்; [ex அடி, step, course, et பயன், meaning.] ஈரடிப்பா, s. A stanza of two lines. (p.) ஈரடிமடக்கு, s. [in poetry.] Repetition of a foot or feet in two lines with different meanings, வந்தசொல்லேயிரண்டடி யினும்வரப்பாடுவது. See மடக்கு. ஈரடிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெ ண்பா of two lines--the குறள்வெண்பா. (p.) ஈரடுக்கொலி, s. Reiterated words imitative of sound--as நெறுநெறென்றுமுறிந் தது, it broke with a reiterated crash; வண்டில்கடகடென்றோடிற்று, the carriage rolled along with a rattling noise. (p.) ஈரறம், s. The two kinds of அறம், or virtuous actions according to the shasters; viz.: இல்லறம், matrimony and its accompanying household virtues; and துறவறம், the virtues of ascetic practice. (p.) ஈரறிவுயிர், s. Beings that have the sense of feeling and tasting--as snails, shells, &c., பரிசமுஞ்சுவையுமறியும்நந்துமுதலிய செந்து. (p.) ஈராசிடைவெண்பா, s. A species of வெண்பா, with two ஆசு affixed to the end of the third foot of the second line. (p.) ஈராடி--ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] A changeable state of the wind and weather, previous to the change of monsoon, indicative of rain. 2. A calm, a lull, the failing of the wind at this season, காற்றினமைவு. 3. Fickleness, hesitation, fluctuation of mind, நிலையின்மை. இக்காரியத்திலென்மனமீராடிப்படுகின்றது. In this affair my mind wavers. ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] Two wives. ஈரி, s. A play of girls, two stones being taken up from the ground while a third is tossed in the air, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. (c.) ஈரிலைப்பயிர், s. A young shoot when two leaves appear. ஈரிழை, s. Double-thread used in some kinds of cloth--as in muslin. ஈரிழைச்சல்லா, s. A muslin whose warp consists of two untwisted threads. ஈரீற்றா, s. A cow that has had two calves. (p.) ஈருடல், s. [in mythology.] Beings possessing the form, in part, of two bodies--as Vishnu manifested in the form of man and lion, இருதன்மைத்தாயவுடல். (p.) ஈருயிர்க்காரி, s. The two-lived --used of a pregnant female. (c.) ஈரெச்சம், s. See எச்சம். ஈரொட்டு, s. Uncertainty, doubt, crisis, criticalness, state of suspense, conditional bargain. (c.) நோயாளியின்காரியமீரொட்டாயிருக்கின்றது. The case of the patient is doubtful. ஈரொட்டாகச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak doubtfully, uncertainly, ambiguously. ஈரொட்டாகவாங்க, inf. To take things conditionally, that is, if approved; or, as a merchant, to pay for them if sold. 6)

Affixed to other words, ஈனம் is a privative and gives them an opposite meaning. ஈனமானநாயைத்தோண்மேலெப்படிக்கொண்டுவரு கிறாய்? How can you carry a vile dog on your shoulders? கோடரிக்காம்புகுலத்துக்கீனம். The handle of an axe (being of wood) is inimical to its own species. [prov.] ஈனசாதி, s. Low or degraded caste, barbarous caste. ஈனமிலணங்கு, s. A goddess, தெய்வப்பெண். (p.) புத்தியீனம், s. Dullness, foolishness. புத்தியீனன், s. A foolish, unwise or stupid man.

urm (p. 64) s. Strength, firmness, hardness, compactness, coarseness, aspiration, force of voice, expression, meaning, &c., வலி. 2. Energy, spirit, exertion, determination, resolution, fortitude, firmness of mind, ஊக்கம். 3. (p.) The breast, chest, மார்பு. 4. Wisdom, knowledge, spiritual knowledge, ஞானம். 5. [prov.] To pound and harden the earth around trees newly set, பலமுறச்செய்ய. உரங்கொள்ள, inf. To thrive, grow strong--as the wind; to get strength, become boisterous--as the sea, பலங்கொள்ள. 2. To exert strength, &c., வலியுண்டாக. 3. To be hardened, indurated, obdurate, கடினமுற. உரங்கொண்டெறிந்து. Throwing with force. காய்ச்சலுரங்கொண்டுகாய்கின்றது. The fever rages and burns. உரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To exert influence, take effect, produce, effect--as arguments, பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To grow strong, வலியுற. 3. To thrive--as vegetables, &c., பலப்பட. அவரெடுத்தகாரியங்களிலொன்றுமுரஞ்செய்யவில் லை. A hot sun. உரப்பிக்க, inf. To make firm, to harden, indurate, confirm. உரப்பு, v. noun. intenseness, force, strength, firmness, compactness, வலி. 2. Coarseness, thickness, roughness--as of cloth, paper, leaves, &c.; stiffness, hardness--as of rice not well boiled, or of the stomach when overcharged, or when food does not digest, திண்மை. உரப்பானநிலம், s. Firm, hard (ungenial) land--as உரத்தநிலம். உரப்பானபுடைவை, s. Thick, coarse cloth. நெஞ்சுரப்பானவன், s. A hardhearted man. 2)

urukku (p. 65) கிறேன், உருக்கினேன், வே ன், உருக்க, v. a. To melt with heat--as metals, or other congealed substances, to dissolve, liquify, fuse, run, தீயிற்கரைக்க. 2. To reduce one as a disease, to emaciate, வாட்ட. 3. To afflict, distress, வருத்த. (சத. 21.) இன்சொல்லிறைநெஞ்சுருக்கினான். By sweet speech, he melted the heart of the divinity. Melt gold on an auspicious day. உருக்கிச்சாய்க்க, inf. To cast or run metals in bars, in mass, &c. for further use. உருக்கிவார்க்க, inf. To cast, found, to run metals. உருக்குகாரம், s. Borax, வெண் காரம். உருக்குப்பிரமியம், s. Gonorrh&ae;a with a discharge of blood, இரத்தப்பிர மியம். உருக்குமணி, s. Solid globules of gold soldered together around a ring and worn by women as an ear-pendent, ஓராபரணம். எலும்புருக்கி, s. An emaciating disease, ஓர்வியாதி. உருக்கு, v. noun. Fusion, melting, liquifaction, உருக்குகை. உருக்கன், s. [prov.] An emaciating or stinting disease--as of men or plantains, &c., ஓர்நோய். உருக்கனடித்தல், v. noun. Stinting or blighting--as disease especially in plantains. உருக்கினம், s. A kind of arsenic, அஞ்சனபாஷாணம். 2. Any thing that facilitates the fusion of metals--as borax. புத்துருக்குநெய், s. ūṟu (p. 71) கிறது, ஊறினது, ம், ஊற, v. a. To spring, flow as water in a well, to issue, நீரூற. 2. To soak, to be steeped, pickled, காய்முதலியவூற. 3. To ooze through, percolate, filter, distil, கசிய. 4. To run or spread--as ink in paper, as dampness in land around a spring; to become moist, மைமுதலியவூற. 5. To form, become collected--as milk in the breast, toddy in palm flowers, &c., பால்முதலியனசுரக்க. 6. To form as raw flesh in a sore, to heal, காயத்திலூன்வளர. 7. To increase--as flesh in a person who has been wasted by disease, to increase by slow degrees, மெலி ந்தவுடல்தேற. (c.) தொட்டளைத்தூறுமணற்கேணிமாந்தர்க்குக் கற்றனைத் தூறுமறிவு. The more you dig in a sandy soil the more does the water spring forth; so the more you apply to science the more your knowledge will increase. கற்கவூறுங்கலைஞானம். By learning, knowledge is increased. இறைத்தகிணறூறும்இறையாக்கிணறூறாது. Water issues from the springs of a well constantly drawn, but from one not drawn, it ceases to do so; i. e. the more one gives, the more will be given to him. ஊறணி, s. A fountain, a spring of water, ஊற்று. 2. [prov.] Good, moist land where water oozes out, கசிவுநிலம். 3. Wet, marshy, or brackish lands, சேற்று நிலம். 4. Income, property stored up, வருவாய் (probably a corruption of ஊ றுநீர்). ஊறவூறக்கறக்க, inf. To milk the cow as fast as the milk forms. 2. To obtain money from a person as fast as he gets it. ஊறவைக்க, inf. To steep, pickle, imbue, macerate. ஊறுகாய், s. Pickled fruits, அடை காய். ஊறுநீர், s. Spring-water, ஊற்று நீர். ஊறுபுண், s. A healing wound, ஆறிவரும்புண். தேனூறுமலர், s. The honey forming flower. ஊறல், v. noun. Oozing as from a sore, &c., percolation, discharge, issue, ஊறுகை. 2. s. A small spring, springwater, ஊற்று. 3. A tincture, infusion, &c., மருந்திலூறல். 4. A taint, or faint mixture of another metal, பஞ்சலோகக்கலப்பு. 5. One's income acquisition, property amassed, &c., வருவாய். 6. A slight degree of verdigris, களிம்பு. ஊறற்பாக்கு, s. Betel-put soaked to render it fit for use. ஊறற்றாள், s. Sinking paper.

eṟi (p. 75) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், எறிய, v. a. To throw, cast, fling, eject, discharge, emit, எறிய. 2. To pierce with a weapon, stab, cast so as to strike, குத்த. 3. To reject (as advice), cast off, cast away, throw away, தள்ள. 4. To slap. clap the hands, beat a drum, strike a bell, அறைய. 5. To toss, cast up waves--as the sea, அலை வீச. 6. To cut off, sunder, cut with a sword, வெட்ட. 7. v. n. To rise, roll over-as waves, அலையடிக்க. எறிசுடர்வாளால். With the ray-emitting sword. எறிசொல்லாச்சொல்லுதல். Speaking with displeasure, in an unconnected manner. எறிந்தகணக்காய்ப்போயிற்று. The property is scattered, nearly all gone. 2. The petition was rejected. எறியென்றெதிர்நிற்பாள்கூற்றம். She who opposes her husband, threatening blows, is as death, (நாலடி.) எறிவானேன்சொறிவானேன். Why insult one and then caress him? பாகெறிகளிறு. An elephant that casts off his driver. அவனென்மேற்கண்ணெறிந்தான். He placed his eyes upon me--he threw a side-glance at me. ஆடல்வேலெறிதலோடும். When the warlike dart severed (the mango tree). (ஸ்காந்.) எறிகடல்--எறிதிரைக்கடல், s. The wave-throwing sea, the billowing ocean. எறிகாலி, s. A kicking cow, உதை காற்பசு. எறிகால், s. A violent wind, பெருங் காற்று. (p.) எறிசக்கரம், s. The discus weapon, எறியுஞ்சக்கரம். எறிந்துபோட, inf. To cast, throw. 2. To reject a person, thing, advice, &c., to treat with disrespect. எறிந்துபோட்டாற்போலேபேசினான். He spoke contemptuously. எறிந்துவிட, inf. To cast off, reject. 2. To sow seed. எறிபடை--எறியாயுதம், s. A missile weapon. எறிமணி, s. A large circular metal plate for striking the hours, also used as a cymbal in a temple in daily worship, &c., சேமக்கலம். எறிமுத்து, s. Chicken pox, haub in pox, மாரிமுத்து. எறியீட்டி--எறிவல்லையம், s. A dart or lance--as a missile weapon, சவளம். எறிவலையம்--எறிவளையம், s. The discus weapon, சக்கராயுதம். வித்தெறிய, inf. To sow seed. எறி, v. noun. Throwing, a cast, எறிகை. 2. [prov.] A sarcasm, irony, a hint, allusion, insinuation, innuendo, குறிப்பாகச்சொல்லுகை. ஓரெறியெறிந்துவிட்டான். He threw out a hint, an insinuation. அதற்கோரெறியெறிந்துவைக்கவேண்டும். You must give a hint, throw in a word, &c., bearing on the object, take the first step toward it. எறிவு, v. noun. Throwing, casting. எறி, க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To shine brilliantly--as the sun; to emit rays; to glitter as jewels, ஒளிசெய்ய. இழைசுடரெறிந்தலானும். By the brightness of the jewels that blazed around. (நைட.) கதிரெறிக்குநன்மணி. Glittering precious gems. (நைட.) நல்லவெயிலெறிக்கிறது. The sun is burning. மேகம்மின்னெறிப்ப. While the clouds emit lightning-எறிப்பு, v. noun. Shining, brightness, glitter, splendor, பிரகாசம். 2. kṭumai (p. 88) s. Severity, harshness, cruelty, hard-heartedness, அகோரம். 2. Rigor, strictness, asperity, rigidness, earnestness, zealousness, கண்டிப்பு. 3. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. (The corn, &c.), is all scorched (not irrecoverably) by the sun and want of water, rain, &c. கடுங்காரநீர், s. An egg, முட்டை. கடுங்காரம், s. A powerful caustic, ஓர்வகையெரிமருந்து. 2. Excessive pungency, அதிகவுறைப்பு. கடுங்காலம், s. A hard season as in drought, scarcity, &c., a season of adversity, பஞ்சகாலம். 2. A hot season, hot weather, வெப்பமானகாலம். கடுங்காற்று, s. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. Alkaline earth, lixivium, உழமண். கடுஞ்சினேகம், s. Very close friendship, too great intimacy, அதிகசினேகம். கடுஞ்சினேகங்கண்ணுக்குப்பகை. Too great intimacy is productive of evil. கடுஞ்சுண்ணத்தி, s. Alum, சீனக் காரம். கடுஞ்சூடு, s. Great heat, அதிகசூடு. கடுஞ்செட்டு, s. Unfair traffic, trading at an exorbitant profit. கடுஞ்செய்கை, s. A cruel or wicked deed, கொடியகிரியை. கடுஞ்சொல், s. A severe word, a harsh expression, a reprimand, கொடுஞ் சொல். கடுதலைமுடிச்சு, s. [prov. prop. க டைதலைமுடிச்சு.] A treacherous contrivance, perfidy. கடுநடை, s. A tiresome walk, hard walking, a hard walk. கடுநெருப்பு, s. A fierce fire, a fire too large or too powerful for the occasion--as for culinary or chemical purposes. கடுந்தரை, s. Hard soil, வன்னிலம். கடுந்தோயல்--கடுந்தோய்ச்சல், v. noun. Over-tempering a weapon, &c., முதிர்ந்ததோயல். கடுமத்தியானம்--கடும்பகல், s. The intense heat of mid-day. கடுமுள், s.
