aññāṉam (p. 7) s. [priv. அ.] Ignorance, spiritual ignorance, worldly illusion, belief in external appearances, destitution of the knowledge of the true God. This is the state of the soul from the beginning, and its condition till its மலம் is removed. When the fruits of its former actions are worked out, in sufferings and enjoyments, the soul begins to be enlightened by the grace of the Deity, its அஞ்ஞா னம் then ceases, and ஞானம் commences, increases and ripens for its union with the Deity. āṭi (p. 38) s. The month of July, கர்க் கடகமாதம். (c.) 2. (p.) The twenty-first lunar asterism, உத்திராடநாள். 3. Mirror, கண்ணாடி. ஆடிக்கரு, s. Dark clouds in July regarded as indicative of plentiful rains in the ensuing monsoons. ஆடிக்கருவழிந்தால் மழைகுறைந்துபோம். If the teeming clouds in July discharge their contents, the rains will fail in the ensuing season. ஆடிக்கழைக்க, inf. To take away or separate the newly married woman from her husband, and to put her under her parents during the month of July of their first year of marriage. This separation is indispensable to prevent conception in that month, and delivery in the coming April, which is believed to bring ruin upon the family. ஆடிப்பண்டிகை, s. The first day of July (ஆடி.) a day of feasting, mutual visits, &c., when the sun is supposed to enter on its southern course. ஆடிப்பெருக்கு, s. A festival held on the day when the Cavery over-flows in July. 8)

To execute a title deed, bond, &c.--as a contracting party, உடன்படிக்கையெழுத. 3. To believe firmly, persuade one's self, நிச்சயிக்க. உறுதிசொல்ல, inf. The principal attendants on a king; they are five, viz.: நட்பாளர், அந்தணாளர், மடைத்தொழிலர், மருத்துவக்கலைஞர், நிமித்திகப்புலவர். உறுதிச்சொல், s. A word of assurance, நிச்சயமொழி. 2. A word of advice, நல்லுபதேசம். 3. An admonition, a warning, கண்டிப்பு. உறுதிபண்ண, inf. To confirm, to corroborate. உறுதிபூசுதல், s. The sacrament of confirmation among the Romanists. உறுதிபெறுதல், v. noun. Obtaining firmness of mind. உறுதிப்பட, inf. To be confirmed, assured, to be firmly established in a course of conduct, திடப்பட. உறுதிப்படுத்த, inf. To confirm in a religious sense, to corroborate, establish, பலப்படுத்த. 2. To make a verbal or written promise, உடன்படிக்கைசெய்ய. உறுதிப்பாடு, s. Firmness, fortitude, decision, திடம். 2. A promise, pledge, assurance. உறுதிப்பொருள், s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. The four chief ends of intelligent creatures. (See பொருள்.) 3. Wisdom, or good conduct, such as may profit the soul, ஞானம். 4. uḷ (p. 67) s. The inside, the interior, that which is intrinsic, private, secret, esoteric, உள்ளிடம், 2. Mind, heart, soul, breast, உள்ளம். 3. Place, இடம். 4. As a nominal affix or postposition, it governs the dative and expresses in, within, among, of, out of, inner, interior, intrinsic, esoteric, ஏழ னுருபு. உள்ளிருந்தார்க்குத்தெரியுமுள்வருத்தம். Those of the household only are acquainted with its secret sorrows. உட்கரணம், s. The intellectual faculties. See இந்திரியம் and கரணம். உட்கருத்து, s. The inmost thought, the real purpose or motive, அகக்கருத்து. 2. Cordial affection, உட்பட்சம். 3. The intrinsic meaning of a passage, &c., கருத்துரை. உட்கருத்தாகப்பேச, inf. To speak with reservation. உட்களவு, s. Guile, deceit, treacherousness, insidiousness, உள்வஞ்சகம். உட்கள்ளம், s. Deep-seated viciousness, dissimulation, உள்வஞ்சகம். 2. Internal, or unsubdued disease, hidden humor or matter--as in a boil, கட்டியினுள் விஷம். உட்காங்கை, s. Caloric, latent heat, உட்சூடு. உட்காந்த, inf. To have internal heat causing emaciation; [ex காந்து.] உட்காய்ச்சல், s. Internal fever, அகச்சுரம். 2. Inward anger, rancor, malice, &c., உள்ளெரிப்பு. உட்கிராந்த, inf. To become emaciated by disease or otherwise. 2. To be firmly rooted--as disease. உட்குத்துப்புறவீச்சு, s. A species of hepatic complaint attended with convulsions, ஓர்நோய். உட்குயிர், s. The Deity regarded as the life, or identified with the life or soul of each individual, உள்ளுயிர். உட்குறிப்பு, s. Aim, object, intention, உள்ளக்குறிப்பு. உட்குற்றம், s. Innate depravity. See உட்பகை. உட்கூதல், s. Internal cold, chill, slight fever. உட்கை, s. Palm of the hand, உள்ளங்கை. 2. A person who is privy to, a secret hand--as in உள்ளுளவு. 3. Turning to the left in dancing or other movements, இடக்கைச்சுற்று. உட்கைச்சுற்று, s. Turning to the left, winding or turning back wards, or contrary to the sun. உட்கொள்ள, inf. To eat as a god, or great personage, உண்ண. 2. To take food that has been consecrated to a deity, தேவப்பிரசாதமுட்கொள்ள. 3. To take food, medicine, to swallow, take in, imbibeas the earth does the rain, &c., விழுங்க. 4. To receive into the mind, meditate, or reflect upon, மனதிற்கொள்ள. 5. To wish for an occurrence, or to express desires mentally--as a deity or holy sage (the thing desired instantly talking place), திருவுளங்கொள்ள. 6. To have a secret object in view, to have in view, உட்கருத. உட்கோபம், s. Interior anger, malice. உட்கோள், s. The will, determination, internal, or inmost thought, உட்கருத்து. 2. Wish of the heart. 3. Opinion, belief, tenet, கோட்பாடு. உட்சங்கம், s. A select society, a committee, அகச்சங்கம். உட்சட்டை, s. An inner vest or tunic. உட்சமயம், s. The six religious systems of the followers of Siva, அகச் சமயம். உட்சாடை, s. The real object of an affair, the real feeling of the heart, உட்கருத்து. 2. Exposure of secrets by one of a party by signs, இரகசியங்களைச்ச மிக்கையாலறிவிக்கை. 3. The meaning, thing, &c., told or known to one's own party and differing from that which is made known to others, குழூஉக்குறி. உட்சீலை, s. An under or inner cloth. 2. The lining of a garment. உட்சவர், s. An inner wall, அகச் சுவர். 2. The interior of a wall, சுவரி னிடை. உட்சுவரிருக்கப்புறச்சுவர்தீற்றுகிறது. To whitewash the outside wall while neglecting the inside; i. e. to be scrupulously exact in external conduct, while the heart is full of wickedness; to attend to things remote while those at hand are neglected. உட்சூத்திரம், s. The main spring in a machine, any internal power or operation concealed from view, மூலசூத் திரம். 2. A clue, or key to an affair, உள்ளுபாயம். 3. The main spring in a business, மூலகாரணம். 4. A skilfully contrived rule in numbers, &c., நுட்பமான வகை. 5. A short, compendious and subtle method of ascertaining, or effecting a thing, இலேசானவகை. 6. (fig.) Internal meaning of a passage, real object in view, உட்குறிப்பு. உட்செல்ல, inf. To enter, insinuate one's self, உள்ளேபோக. உட்டுளை, s. Hollowness--as of a pipe or tube. உட்டுளைப்பொருள், s. Any thing tubular. உட்டெளிவு, s. Cleverness of mind, freedom from doubt, profound knowledge, அகத்தெளிவு. 2. The clear part of the liquid--as poured off from the sediment, வடித்தசாறு. 3. Soundness--as in timber, &c., உள்வைரம். 4. Inner measurment. உட்டேட்டம், s. The secret object or pursuit, as differing from profession, or appearances, மனநாட்டம். 2. Property acquired and kept secretly, உட்சம்பத்து. உட்பகை, s. Internal enmity, hatred or grudge, rancor at heart with professions of friendship. 2. Internal, innate, or secret foes attached to the soul, causing actions, &c., காமாதிக்குற்றங் கள். (For the six உட்பகை, see பகை.) 3. Hatred of a king by his professed friends, civil conspiracy, அரசருட்பகை. எட்பகவன்சிறுமைத்தேயாயினுமுட்பகையுள்ள தாங்கேடு. Though the internal hatred be as the fragment of a grain of rape seed, the consequent evil may be very great. உட்பக்கம், s. Subject of investigation or deduction in things of a mental, mystic, or spiritual character. See பக்கம். உட்பட, inf. To enter, be within, or under--as in age, உள்ளாக. 2. To engage in, be concerned in, to be, or become one of a party, or community; to be involved in, to be subject to, to yield to, to be obedient to, உடன்பட. 3. adv. Together with, inclusive. மூன்றுவயதுக்குட்பட்டபிள்ளை. A child under three years of age. அதுட்பட. That inclusive. மோசத்துக்குட்பட, inf. To fall into danger. உட்படி, s. A make-weight, உட்ப டிக்கல். உட்படுத்த, inf. To cause to enter, to introduce, அகப்படுத்த. 2. To persuade, proselyte, bring one into, or over to one's party, மதத்துக்குள்ளாக்க. 3. To include, involve, entrap, ensnare, சிக்கப்பண்ண. உட்பத்தியம், s. Abstinence from venery as a regimen while taking medicine, &c.; sometimes அகப்பத்தியம். உட்பந்தி, s. The chief row or table of guests, அகப்பந்தி. உட்பலம், s. Property at command, திரவியபலம். 2. Friends, assistants, attendants, &c., துணைவர்பலம். 3. Forces, army, army in reserve, சேனாபலம். 4. The secret of the matter, internal affair, அந்தரங்கம். உட்புறம், s. The inside, உட்பக்கம். உட்பொருள்--உள்ளர்த்தம், s. The real meaning, தாற்பரியம். 2. The hidden, or secret meaning, உட்கருத்து. சாஸ்திரத்தினுட்பொருள், s. The occult sense of a doctrine. உட்போட, inf. To coax, to wheedle, வசமாக்க. உண்ணா--உண்ணாக்கு, s. To join a person on professions of friendship in order to deceive and entrap him, &c. உள்வினை, s. Malice, evil in the heart kept secret, long indulged, &c., உட்பகை. 2. A tinkling ring of brass, put as an ornament on the feet of horses mounted by kings and great men-comp. தண்டை, which is the name of another ornament made of silver and commonly placed upon the former. 2. A pad placed between a load and the back of an ox. உள்ளங்கம், s. Symmetry of mind, the internal property or quality. See அகத்துறுப்பு. உள்ளங்கால், s. The sole of the foot. உள்ளங்கை, s. The palm of the hand. உள்ளடங்கிப்போக, inf. To be shut, shut in, to be swallowed up. உள்ளடக்க, inf. To enclose, shut in, shut up in a place. 2. To conceal, to keep secret. உள்ளடக்கம், v. noun. eḷ (p. 75) s. [vul. எள்ளு.] One of the nine kinds of grain, sesamum, from the seeds of which an oil is extracted, used for food, bathing, &c., திலம். Sesamum orientale. See தானியம் and எண்ணெய்.-Note. The ள் of this word becomes ட் and ண் by permutation. எள்ளத்தனையைமலையத்தனையாக்க. To make a mountain of a sesamum seed, to exaggerate. எள்ளளவு--எள்ளுப்போலே. As much as a sesamum seed, a very little. எள்ளளவுநம்பிக்கையுமில்லை. Utterly unworthy of confidence. 2. Destitute of belief, confidence, &c. எள்ளுக்குளெண்ணெய்போலெங்குநிறைந்தகடவுள். God who pervades the universe, as oil the sesamum seed. எட்கடை--எட்கிடை--எட்பிரமா ணம். As much as a sesamum seed, எள்ள ளவு. 2. A standard of measure in regard to space, ஓரளவு--eight எள் make a நெல் or grain or rice; eight grains of rice one அங்குலம், an inch, &c. எட்பாகு, s. A kind of porridge made of sesamum seed, எள்ளுப்பாகு. எண்ணெய், s. [impr. எண்ணை.] Rape-seed oil. 2. (fig.) A common name for oils of all kinds. எண்ணெயூற்ற, inf. To express oil, எண்ணெய்வடிக்க. எண்ணெயெரிக்க, inf. To prepare medicinal oils by burning, in which the drugs are rolled up in a bit of cloth which is dipped in oil and set on fire; the oil which drops from it is used as a medicine, தைலமெரிக்க. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பு, s. The color of rape-seed oil, or dark brown. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பி, s. A female whose skin resembles rape-seed oil, not so much in regard to its color as its soft and beautiful appearance. எண்ணெய்க்காப்பு, s. Oil for bathing an idol, எண்ணெயபிஷேகம். எண்ணெய்க்காரன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. A hone prepared for use by oiling. எண்ணெய்ச்சாயம், s. Oil paint, எண்ணெயாற்செய்யப்பட்டசாயம். 2. Oil extracted by pressing or pounding the seeds. மீனெண்ணெய், s. Fish oil. எள்ளுண்டை--எள்ளுருண்டை, s. A pastry made into balls, said to be a very strengthening food, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. எள்ளுந்தண்ணீருமிறைக்க, inf. To pour water to the manes of deceased persons on sesamum seeds and sacrificial grass held in the hand. எள்ளோரை, s. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. [vul.] A hard udder of a cow, காய்மடி. கல்மதம்--கன்மதம், s. Rock alum-one of the one hundred and twenty kinds of minerals. கல்மலை--கன்மலை, s. A rock, கல் வெற்பு, Alum plumosum. கல்மழை--கல்மாரி--கன்மழை, s. Hail, a shower of hailstones. கல்முதிரை, s. The tree yielding satin wood, Chloroxylon swietenia. கல்மொந்தன், s. To crect a stone at a funeral ceremony (a சாச்சடங்கு, personifying a deceased ancestor, whose spirit is supposed to enter and remain in it while the ceremonies are performed. A deification of the soul is supposed to take place and the stone is made an object of worship, சிலைதாபிக்க. கல்லுவைத்துப்பார்க்க, inf. A stone cutting, engraving in stones, சிலாசாதனம். 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. koḷ (p. 147) --கொள்ளு, கிறேன், கொண் டேன், வேன், கொள்ள, v a. To take, receive with the hand, வாங்கிக்கொள்ள. 2. To contain, hold, comprehend, have, comprise, embrace, அடக்கிக்கொள்ள. 3. To buy, purchase, விலைக்குக்கொள்ள. 4. To accept, approve of, admit, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. To take a wife, to marry, பெண்கொள்ள. 6. To take --as food, medicine, sleep, rest, &c., உணவு முதலியகொள்ள. 7. To conceive--as in the womb, in the mind or in the heart. 8. To get, to acquire, பெற்றுக்கொள்ள. 9. v. n. To be contained in, அடங்க. As an auxiliary to other verbs, கொள் denotes, continuation, certainly, &c., of the action, and that the fruit of it reverts to the agent-as படித்துக்கொள்ளுகிறான். He continues to study, குதிரையைவாங்கிக்கொண்டேன். I bought a horse for myself. The verb is generally found in composition with other words --as வாங்கிக்கொள்ள, பெண்கொள்ள, உட்கொள்ள, &c., and very rarely in the personal finite forms in common usage, except in the third meaning. கொள்வாருமில்லைகொடுப்பாருமில்லை.... There are none who receive, none who give. கொண்டிருந்துகுலம்பேசுகிறதா? Would it be proper to twit a family after you have taken a wife from it? கொண்டான், s. A husband, புருஷன். 2. A play as கொண்டல். See under கொண் டு, for other words. கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry, to convey; to take away. கொள்க, [obtative.] May take, accept, or may uderstand. உமதுசித்தத்தின்படிகொள்க. You may take it as you please. கொள்கலம், s. A vessel, a salver, a dish; a receptacle for sandal-paste, or other ointments, or for ornaments, &c., சாந்துமுதலியபெய்கலம். 2. A cup of palm leaf, or bamboo to eat from, பிழர. (சது.) A beggar's dish, இரப்போர்கலம். கொள்கை, v. noun. The act of taking, getting, &c. See, கொள், v. 2. Quality, nature, habit, state, குணம். 3. [prov.] Land attained by purchase, as distinguished from lands by dowry and inheritance. கொள்விலைக்காரன், s. The purchaser of land, &c. கொள்வோன், s. One who buys, or one who accepts any thing. 2. (நன்.) a pupil, student, learner, கற்போன். கொள்ள, [adverbially.] While, when-as நான்வரக்கொள்ள, while I was coming. 2. (Rott.) as கொள்க in the phrase கொள் ளாதநோய்கொள்ள, may you be seized with an insupportable disease--a malediction. 4. [prov.] More, further on, in or under --as கொஞ்சங்கொள்ளவார், pour out a little more; also in கொள்ளக்கொடு, insert a lever, or land, further in, further under, &c., or let a pair of scissors or pincers take a good hold; and in கொள்ளப்பிடி, take hold further in measuring cloth. கொளல்வினா, s. [in gram.] One of the six kinds of interrogation, implying a desire to obtain the thing mentioned --as அரிசியுளதோ, have you got any rice? wishing to buy some. கொள்ளல்--கொளல், v. noun. Taking, receiving, obtaining, buying, &c. கொள்ளற்பாடு, [prov.] Estimation, worth, honor, மேன்மை. கொள்ளாதசெய்கை, s. A fragrantly wicked, unbearable act. கொள்ளாதசிறை, s. One assiduous as a slave--spoken of an affectionate, faithful wife, or a dependent. கொள்ளாதபுகழ், s. Unbounded praise. கொள்ளாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Excessiveness transcedency, pre-eminence in good or evil. 2. Disagreement, discordance, enmity, பகை. வாய்கொள்ளாப்பேச்சு. Language not proper to be used. கொள்ளார், s. Haters, enemies, பகை வர். kōṇu (p. 150) கிறது, கோணினது, ம், கோண, v. n. (Sa. Kon'a, crooked.) To be crooked, bent, curved, angular, serpentine, வளைய. 2. To be or become awry, oblique, aslant, askant, கோணலாயிருக்க. (c.) 3. To deviate, diverge, or turn out of the proper course, நெறிபிறழ. 4. To be warped or discouraged in mind; to be changed--as circumstances, மாறுபட. முதற்கோணினால் முற்றுங்கோணும். If the beginning goes wrong, all will be wrong. This is superstitiously believed. கோணிக்கோணிகொடுப்பதிலுங் கோணாமற்காணி கொடுப்பதுஉத்தமம். It is better to give a little (காணி) with a good will than much (கோணி) with reluctance. கோணக்கோணஇழுக்க, inf. To distort the limbs, features, &c., as cramps, convulsion, &c. கோணிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give unwillingly. (c.) முகத்தைக்கோணவைக்க, inf. To avert the countenance. 2. To make a wry face. முகங்கோண, inf. To look sour, harsh. கோணல், v. noun.
