añcu (p. 7) s. Five. See ஐந்து. அஞ்சாம்வருணம், s. The fifth caste, Pariahs, &c. அஞ்சாலியிடையர், s. [prop. அஞ் சார இடையர்.] A tribe of cowherds; whose women wear, in their marriage neck jewel, five ornaments, or ஐந்தாலி. அஞ்சாரப்பெட்டி, s. [prop. அஞ்ச றைப்பெட்டி.] A box that has five compartments, one in the middle and four surrounding, made of palmyra leaves or other materials for containing flowers, spices, &c. அஞ்சுருவாணி, s. (as அச்சுருவா ணி.) An iron bolt passing through the five tiers of a car. அஞ்சுமூன்றுமுண்டானாலறியாப்பெண்ணுங் கறி யாக்கும். Even a young girl will be able to make a curry, when she has the following three and five things, viz., புளி, souring; மிளகு, pepper; உப்பு, salt; கடுகு, mustard; and சீரகம், cumin--which are the five; and the three are நீர், water; நெருப்பு; fire; and விறகு, fire-wood--said by an angry husband to his wife when the curry is not good. பூதங்கள் அஞ்சும் அகத்தேங்கும். The five elements will laugh within themselves. (குறள்.) 43)

The name of a tree, ஈறுவிலிமரம். 4. Yama, இயமன். (சது.) 5. Fire, நெருப்பு. அலிக்கிரகம், s. A neuter planet-either Mercury or Saturn. அலிநாள், s. A neuter lunar mansion. அலியெழுத்து, s. In the Alphabet, the guttural letter, ஆய்தம். 26) *

aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

Siva, சிவன். அழல்விரியன், s. A poisonous snake, as எரிவிரியன். அழற்கண்ணன், s. Siva, சிவன். அழற்கண்வந்தோன், s. Veerapattra, வீரபத்திரன். அழற்பித்தம், s. A kind of bilious disease. அழற்பிரவை, s. One of the seven hells in which fire is the instrument of punishment, தீநரகு. அழனாசம், s. A species of snake, the bite of which causes insufferable burning. ஓர்பாம்பு. 2)

avi (p. 30) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To become sodden, boiled, cooked by boiling or by steam, as rice or other substances in liquid, வேக. 2. To become extinguished as a light, the sight of the eye, &c., become extinct or suppressed (as the senses of an ascetic by austerities,) தணிய. 3. To perish, become ruined or destroyed, அழிய. 4. [impersonally.] To feel hot attended with perspiration, to swelter, புழுங்க. 5. To heat as moist straw, fruit, &c. heaped up, to ferment as vegetable matter, வெதும்ப. 6. To become salivated; heated, corroded, sore, &c., as the mouth or skin with lime or other caustics, or the flesh by a tight bandage, வாய்வேக. 7. To be in the state of raw sores, small blisters, eruptions, &c., as found in some cutaneous diseases, புண்ண விய. 8. To be hot, close, confined, as in a crowded room by the exclusion of air, &c., உஷ்ணமாக. 9. To be afflicted, வருந்த. (c.) அவிந்ததானியம், s. Spoiled, damaged grain. அவியாதநெருப்பு, s. Inextinguishable fire. அவியல், v. noun. Boiled food, அவி ந்தது. 2. A kind of curry without acid, ஓர்கறி. 3. Heat of the body with perspiration in sultry weather, sweltering, புழுக்கம். 4. Fermentation, heating of vegetable matter, of grain, &c., வெப்பம். 5. Soreness of the mouth occasioned by heat in the system--chiefly found in children--canker, salivation, &c., வாய்ப் புண். 6. Heat from a crowd of people, உட்டணம். (c.) அவியல்மணம், s. The offensive smell of fermenting vegetable matter, &c அவியற்கறி, s. Boiled meat. அவியற்காய், s. uruku (p. 65) கிறேன், உருகினேன், வேன், உருக, v. n. To dissolve with heat, to melt, liquify, to be fused, கரைய. 2. (fig.) To become tender, to melt as the heart, to be kind, be appeased, to sympathize, commiserate, pity, இரங்க. 3. To glow with love, மனங்கரைய. உருகோட்டன்பொடு. With melting love. (சித்தியார்.) நெருப்பினாலுருக்கப்பட்டவரக்குப்போலஉள்ளமுரு கி. His heart melting like wax before the fire-அரக்குப்பாவைபோலத்தேவர்களுடலுருகின. The gods whose bodies melted, through want of air, like wax statues. மனமுருக, inf. To be kind, to pity, sympathize. உருக்கம், v. noun. Melting (of heart), tenderness, pity, compassion, commiseration, sympathy, இரக்கம். 2. Tender or ardent love to a deity, or a dear friend, அன்பு. 3. Melting, உரு குகை. உருக்கங்காட்ட, s. To show kindness, to relent, &c. மனவுருக்கம், s. Tenderness of mind. 6)

ulai (p. 66) s. A smith's forge, or furnace, கொல்லனுலை. 2. A fireplace for cooking, a hearth, நெருப்புள்ளவடுப்பு. 3. A pot of water set on the fire, or fireplace for cooking, பாகஞ்செய்யவைக்குநீருலை. உலைகட்ட, inf. To decorate the top of a pot with mango leaves and set it on the fireplace with water to receive the rice that is to be boiled and distributed among religious mendicants, or offered in the temple, பொங்கற்பானைக்குமா விலைசெருகியகயிறுகட்ட. உலைகாயவைக்க, inf. To set the rice-pot on the fire filled with water to be heated. உலைகொதிக்க, inf. To boil as water when placed on the fire for cooking, &c. உலைக்களம், s. A smith's forge, கொல்லனுலையிடம். உலைக்குறடு, s. A smith's tongs, இரும்பெடுக்குங்குறடு. உலைத்தண்ணீர்--உலைநீர், s. Water set over the fire for cooking, பாகஞ்செய்ய வைக்குந்தண்ணீர். 2. Water used by the smith in the work of the forge, இரும்பு தோய்க்குநீர். உலைத்துருத்தி, s. A smith's bellows, உலையூதுந்துருத்தி. உலைமுகம், s. A smith's furnace or the centre of the forge, கொல்லனுலையி டம். உலைமூக்கு, s. The hole in the forge in which the bellows are inserted, கொல் லனுலைநாசி. உலைமூடி, s. The cover of a pot used for heating water, உலைப்பானையின் மேல்மூடி. ஊரைவாய்மூடவுலைமூடியில்லை. There is no lid that will cover the country. உலைமூட்ட, inf. To construct a forge and make it ready for work, கொல்லனுலையாயத்தம்பண்ண. 2. To make a fire in the smith's forge, கொல்லனுலை யில்நெருப்புமூட்ட. 3. To make a fire for cooking, அடுப்புமூட்ட. உலைமூட்டினாலுண்டுலகு. If the smith construct the forge, the world will stand. உலையாணிக்கோல், s. A smith's poker, beak-iron, உலையிருப்புக்கோல். 2. A branding-iron, சுட்டுக்கோல். உலையில்வெந்தவிரும்பு, s. Iron well burnt in a smith's forge. உலையேற்ற--உலைவைக்க, inf. To set a pot on the fire, உலைப்பானையையடுப்பி லேவைக்க. அவன்என்தலைக்குஉலைவைக்கிறான். He puts a rice-pot on the fire for my head; i. e. he meditates my ruin. இன்னமுலைவைக்கவில்லை. The rice-pot has not yet been set on the fire. 28)

To lie in concealment in order to catch game, to lurk in order to catch one, பதுங்கியிருக்க. ஒளியிழக்க, inf. To be deprived of lustre or brightness, பிரகாசநீங்க. ஒளியுருவியகல், s. A gem--cat's eye, வைடூரியம். ஒளியோன், s. The sun, சூரியன். (p.) ஒளிவட்டம், s. A mirror, a lens, கண்ணாடி. 2. The discus weapon, சக்கரா யுதம். ஒளிவிட--ஒளிவீச, inf.
