maṉu (p. 346) s. Menu, the great legislator and saint, regarded as the son of Brahma, or a personification of that god, and the author of மானவம் or Institutes of Menu. He is called Swayambhuva, மனுச்சக்கிரவர்த்தி. 2. A generic term, applied to the fourteen successive Menus who preside over the universe, each for the period of a Manuvantara--In the present Kalpa there have already been six, of whom Swayambhuva was the first. The seventh, or now ruling Menu, is Vaivaswata. 3. Man in general, மனுஷன். 4. Mantra, a mystical verse, or formula, மந்திரம். W. p. 641. MANU. 5. One of the treatises of jurisprudence. A post set up by sages, with incantations, as an antidote for venomous bites, or for magical purposes. மந்திரஸ்தாபனம், s. Uttering incantations over magical letters, diagrams, &c., to communicate virtue to them. See தாபனம். மந்திரஸ்நானம், s. (lit.) Magical bathing of the sick by sprinkling a few drops of water on the head and repeating magical letters. மந்திரஞ்செபிக்க--மந்திரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To pronounce a mantra. மந்திரதந்திரம், s. A motion of the fingers while repeating incantations. மந்திரதந்திரத்தினாலேமயக்கம்வருவிக்க. To bewilder by enchantment. மந்திரதாரணை, s. One of the nine forms of worship by the Saiva yogis. See தாரணை. மந்திரத்தால்வாய்கட்ட, inf. To stop the mouths of snakes, sharks, wild beasts, &c, by incantations. மந்திரத்தாற்கட்ட, inf. To bind with spells. மந்திரப்பிரயோகம், s. The application of a magical formula. மந்திரமுச்சரித்தல்--மந்திரமுருவேற்றல், v. noun. Repeating mantras frequently. மந்திரம்பண்ண, inf. As மந்திரிக்க. மந்திரமுருப்போட, inf. To repeat with a rosary the whole round of mantras. மந்திரவாதம், s. An incantation. மந்திரவாள், s. A magical sword. மந்திரவிதி, s. A rule for incantations. மந்திரவித்தை, s.
