இறங்கு
iṟngku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறங்கினேன், வேன், இறங்க, v. n. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To disembark, get out of a boat, or from one boat into another of smaller size, கப்பலினின்றிறங்க. 5. To be taken down, unladed, unladen, disburdened, சாமானிறங்க. 6. To fall or sink into the appropriate place--as a post into its hole, to be driven home--as a nail, உள்ளிறங்க. 7. To sink--as a denser body, to settle to the bottom--as earth in water, water in oil, &c., அமிழ. 8. To arrive at a place other than one's home, to pitch, alight, encamp --as an army. to halt, பாளயமிறங்க. 9. To get into the right road, நேர்வழியிலிறங்க. 1. To be brought down or reduced, தாழ்வடைய. 11. To abate--as fever commencing with the head and descending to the extremities, சுரமிறங்க. 12. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. The subsiding of swelling, &c. from the head to the extremities, விக்கமிறங்கல். இறவு, v. noun. Lapse, passage, a place of descent, செல்கை. 5)

uṭu (p. 59) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To dress, attire, put on clothes, வஸ்திரந்தரிக்க. 2. To dress another, ஒருவனுக் குடுக்க. 3. (fig.) (p.) To surround, encircle, சூழ. பிள்ளைக்குச்சீலையுடுத்தாள். She dressed the child. பூசலார்விழிக்குச்சந்தப்பூந்தழையுடுத்து. Adorning the attractive eyed body with boughs of the sandal tree. (திருச்செந்திற்புராணம்.) உடுகூறை, s. Clothes--in colloquial use, chiefly woman's. உடுத்தவாடை, s. Home-dress or dishabille, under-clothes. உடுத்தவாடையில்லாதாணீராட்டும். A woman's bathing without her under-garments (is improper). (திரிகடுகம்.) உடுத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To dress one's self. உடுத்துவிட, inf. To dress another. உடுபாவனை, s. Mode or style of dress. 2. [prov.] A suit of clothes. 3. (Rott.) Clean clothes. உடுபுடவை, s. Garments. உடுமானம், s. A dress befitting a person's station in life. நகருடுத்த, rel. part. Surrounding the city. கடலுடுத்தபார், s. The sea-girt earth. உடுக்கை, v. noun. Dressing. 2. s. Raiment, clothing, உடை. உடுக்கையிழந்தவன்கைபோலவாங்கேயிடுக்கண்க ளைவதாநட்பு. (Real) friendship to one removes his distress with that promptitude with which the hands of him whose garments are loosened (while before an assembly) adjust them. (குறள்.) உடுப்பு, s. Clothes, garments, clothing, vesture, dress, வஸ்திரம். உடுப்புடுக்க, inf. To dress, clothe (one's self of another). 90)
என்
eṉ (p. 75) கிறேன், றேன், பேன், என்ன, v. a. To say, name, pronounce, express, do, indicate, either by words or signs, expressed, or implied, என்றுசொல்ல. This is the common form for quotation, in which sense it generally occurs in all its various uses. In the infinitive and other parts it is commonly found with one ன் only. என்கு. I say. என்கும். We say. என்ப--என்பர்--என்மர்--என்மனார்--என்றிசினோ ர். They say, they may say, some say, &c. அப்படியென்கிறான். So he says. 2. He does so (the speaker making the sign or sound intended). இல்லையென்கிறேன். I say no-implying impatience, displeasure, emphasis, &c. பணமில்லையென்கிறான். He says he has no money. போவென்கிறேன். I tell you to go, lit. I say go, and implying I have said so before. அவனைப்போவென்னப்போகிறான். When I say go, he goes. காமதேனுவென்கிறபசு. The cow (of the supernals) called Kamadhanu. நானென்னுமெண்ணம். Self conceit, consequence. என்பவன், appel. n. He who says so. 2. He who is called so. பெரியானென்பவன். Perian, or he who is called Perian. ஆவென்ன, inf. To open the mouth, lit. to say ஆ. ஈயென்ன, inf. To show the teeth, lit. to say ஈ. என்பிக்க, inf. To cause another to say, to prove, சொல்லுவிக்க. அதையவன்வாயினாலேயுமக்கென்பிப்பேன். I will prove it to you from his mouth. என்று. The gerund of the verb என், used instead of என the infinitive (which is the poetic usage in this connexion), it serves to end a quotation and to connect it with the following part of the sentence, in which case it often corresponds to the conjunction that, வினையெச்சம். அவனையடித்தேனென்றுசொன்னான். He said that he struck him, lit. he said, I struck him. Note 1st. In connexion with appropriate verbs, என்று, and என often mean to expect, to think, imagine, to suppose, to pretend, to desire, எண்ணுதல் or some such verb being implied; பணந் தெய்வமென்றுநடக்கிறான், he makes money his god; அதுபுகையென்றிருந்தேன், I thought it was smoke, I took it for smoke; அவர்வருவாரென்றிருக்கிறேன், I expect him to come; அவன்சொன்னானென்றுவந்தாயா, have you came because he told you?--Note 2d. According to நன்னூல், என்று and என are இடைச்சொல் or particles, with several specific uses, the other parts of the verb are or may be included. 1. With பெயர் or names; அழுக்காறெனவொரு பாவி, the sinner called envy. (குறள்.) 2. With குறிப்பு or symbolic forms; சிக்கென வூன்றியவேர், the root which has taken firm hold; திடீரெனவந்தான், he came suddenly. 3. With இசை or (imitative) sounds; ஒல்லெனவொலித்தது, it sounded ஒல்; அடுக் கு or repititive symbolic terms are included in this class; படபடென்றுநடுங்கி னான், he trembled (shook, shivered, &c.) greatly; சுஃஃறென்னுந்தண்டோட்டுப்பெண் ணை, the palmyras whose green leaves rustled (emitted the sound of சுஃஃறு). 4. With எண் enumeration, in which they are equivalent to the copulative conjunction; சாத்தனெனக்கொற்றனெனப்பூதனெ னமூவரும்வந்தார், Sattan, Kottan and Bhuta came; தேனென்றுபாலென்றுவமையில்லாமொழி, words unequalled (in sweetness) by honey or milk. 5. With பண்பு or symbolic terms expressive of quality and intensity; சிவேரெனச்சிவந்தது, it reddened to a crimson; வெள்ளெனவா, come in the grey of the morning; வெள்ளெனவி ளர்த்தது, it became very white.--Note 3d. என்று and என also serve to express similitude, like, as, &c.; புலியெனப்பாய்ந் தான், he sprang like a tiger; காந்தளெனக் கைநீட்டி, extending her காந்தள்-like hand. --Note 4th. என and என்று are also used to express pre-eminence, &c.; இன்னதென் றில்லை, it is no matter which; ஆரென்றுநி னைத்தாய், who do you suppose I am? I am not to be treated thus, &c., உயிரென் றுபார்க்கவில்லை, he does not (or did not) regard even life; அவனுக்கின்னாரென்றில்லை, it is no matter to him who; குருவென் றுபேணுகின்றிலன், he does not respect even the guru; எவ்வளவென்றில்லை, it is no matter how much. 2. How much soever, how little soever. 3. It is illimitable, undefined, the quantity is unknown; வாய்வயிறென்றுபார்க்கிறதில்லை, he does not give himself time to eat.--Note 5th. என and என்று are also used with reiterative symbolic terms; மடம்டென்றொலித்த து, it sounded மட, மட; அடியடியென்றடித் தான், he beat him soundly; தலைதலையென்ற டித்துக்கொண்டான், he beat his head greatly through rage, grief, despair, &c.; lit. saying, 'Head, head;' வாய்வாயென்றடிக்க, to beat one's mouth greatly--in sorrow, despair, &c.; எறியெறியென்றெறிந்தான், he threw many times; lit. he threw, saying, 'Throw, throw.'--Note 6th. என and என்று, with a dative imply, designed or appointed for, sacred or devoted to, for the sake of, &c.; சுவாமிக்கென்றுநேர்ந் தது, it is vowed (devoted) to God; தன்பிள்ளைக்கென்றுவைத்துக்கொண்டான், he kept it for his child; எனக்கென்றெடுக்கமாட் டேன், I will not take it for myself-Note 7th. The subjunctive என்றால் joined to verbs or used when verbs are implied forms the subjunctive of those verbs.--Note 8th. The subjunctive என் னில், poetically, என்னின், if, is contracted into எனில் and எனின், and in classical usage to எல் and என்: உம் joined to those forms makes them though; they are added to other verbs or to nouns; ஓரடி யென்கிலும்நட, walk, if it be but one step. 40)
கணம்
kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) Wils. p. 277. GAN'A. 6. Long-pepper, திப்பிலி. 7. A demon, vampire, பிசாசம். 8. [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. It is modified into eight kinds, ஓர் செய்யுட்பொருத்தம். 11. One of the பொருத்தம் concerning marriage, கணப்பொருத்தம். 12. A star, விண்மீன். (p.) கணந்தோறும். Every moment. ஒருகணத்திலேவந்துவிடுவேன். I will come in a moment. குணமென்னுங்குன்றேறிநின்றார் வெகுளிகணமேயுங் காத்தலரிது. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. [impr. கணைக் காய்ச்சல்.] A kind of lingering fever in children. 48) *
செய்யுள்
ceyyuḷ (p. 204) s. Poetry, verse, poesy, the classics, செய்யுணடை. 2. A poem, stanza, கவி. 3. A corn-field, விளைநிலம். (p.) செய்யுட்கருத்து, s. Poetical meaning. 2. The meaning of a verse, or passage in poetry. 3. The meaning of the poet. செய்யுட்கலப்பு, v. noun. Anthology, கலம்பகம். செய்யுட்சொல், s. Words used only in poetry, classical terms. செய்யுட்டாரணை, s. One of the nine தாரணை. See நவதாரணை. செய்யுட்பிரபந்தம், s. Poetry. செய்யுட்பொருத்தம், s. The things to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem, addressed to a hero or heroine: 1. மங்கலம், an auspicious word. 2. சொல், a word natural, elegant, unequivocal, and that will scan well. 3. எழுத்து, a word composed of an odd number of letters. 4. தானம், formed of letters taken from any of the first three of the five classes of தானம் (which denote the five stages of life), counting from the first letter of the name of the hero. 5. பால் formed of masculine or feminine letters according to the sex of the person. 6. உண்டி, composed of benign letters. 7. வருணம், of letters appropriate to the caste. 8. நாள், of letters belonging to an asterism, which has no malign aspect on that of his birth. 9. கதி, of letters of the first two families or species. 1. கணம், a word appropriate to some of the first four of the eight கணம், as it regards the feet, &c. செய்யுட்போக்கு, v. noun. Poetic style, idiom, phraseology, classical usage, poetic language. செய்யுணடை, s. Poetic usage, or style. 2. The metre of a verse in respect to its feet, or movement in reading or singing. செய்யுளாக்க--செய்யுள்செய்ய, inf. To put prose into verse, make poetry. செய்யுள்வழக்கு, s. Poetic usage, style, or phrascology, classical usage; oppos. to உலகவழக்கு, or பரவைவழக்கு, common usage. செய்யுள்்்விகாரம், s. Poetical changes. which are nine--as 1. வலித்தல். 2. மெலித் தல். 3. நீட்டல். 4. குறுக்கல். 5. விரித்தல். 6. தொகுத்தல். 7. முதற்குறை. 8. இடைக்குறை. 9. கடைக்குறை, which see in their places. செய்யுளியல், s. The second part of Prosody treating of the different kinds of metre, யாப்பிலோர்பிரிவு. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of poetry, as given in காரிகை. See உறுப்பு. 59)

taṇṭu (p. 223) s. Stick, cudgel, bludgeon, staff of an ascetic, சன்னியாசித்தடி. 2. A club, as the weapon of Yama, and others, தண்டா யுதம். 3. Oar, paddle; also a setting pole, சவளமரம் (c.) 4. The Indian lute, வீணை. 5. Gemini of the Zodiac, மிதுனராசி. 6. A tube, or any thing tubular, துணையுடைப்பொ ருள். 7. Bambu, மூங்கில். 8. Palankeen. தண் டிகை. 9. Chamelion, பச்சோந்தி. 1. Weapons, ஆயுதப்பொது. 11. (c.) Army, troops, train, சேனை. 12. Petal of a flower, பூவிதழ். 13. Ridge, embankment in fields, causeway, வரம்பு. 14. (c.) The small gristly protuberance of the ear, the right being, ஆண்தண்டு, the left, பெண்தண்டு, செவித்தண்டு. 15. Stalk, stem, தாள். 16. [in combin.] Stands of a lamp, candlestick, விளக்குத்தண்டு. 17. The bridge, or bone of the nose, மூக்குத் தண்டு. 18. A frame for carrying images on men's shoulders, வாகனத்தண்டு. 19. Membrum virile, ஆண்குறி. (indecent.) தண்டிலேபோனால் ரண்டிலேஒன்று. Enlisting in the army is a doubtful step. தண்டாகாரம், s. [in Hindu astron.] The arranging of sea-shells (which are used for numbers) in a line beginning with units up to tens, hundreds, &c., or numbers placed one after another according to their local value-oppos. to சர்ப்பாகாரம். தண்டாயுதம், s. A club-weapon, தண்டு. தண்டாயுதன், s. The god Bhairava, as club-armed, வயிரவன்; also Ayanar, ஐயனார்; and Bhima, வீமன். தண்ாடயுதபாணி, s. An epithet of Subramanyan, as worshipped at Palaney. தண்டுகட்ட, inf. [prov.] To deprive one of the powers of virility by magic. தண்டுக்கீரை, s. A large sized herb. See கீரை. தண்டுக்கோல், s. [prov.] An oar, or setting pole. தண்டுப்பிளவை, s. A kind of scirrhous formation in the penis. தண்டுப்புற்று, s. An eating venereal ulcer, on the point of the penis. தண்டுப்பாதை, s. A military road. தண்டுவலிக்க--தண்டுபோட, inf. To row, to paddle. தண்டெடுத்துப்போக, inf. To conduct forth an army. (c.) தண்டெலும்பு, s. The spine, as முள்ள ந்தண்டு. தண்டொட்டி, appel. n. (com. தண்டட்டி.) A kind of female ear-ornament, மாதர்கா தணி; [ex தண்டு, et ஒட்டி] கீரைத்தண்டு, s. See under கீரை. மூக்கந்தண்டு, s. The bridge of the nose. வாழைத்தண்டு, s. Internal spadix of a plantain tree. விளக்குத்தண்டு, s. A candlestick. முன்தண்டு, s. The van-guard. பின்தண்டு, s. The rear. 2)
