nālu (p. 275) --நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, universal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், becomes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s.
