akngkārm (p. 1) s. Pride, self-consequence, கருவம். 2. One of the four intellectual powers, the energy which excites to action, அந்தக்கரணங்களிலொன்று. (See இந்தி ரியம்.) 3. Self-consciousness, individuality, regarding one's self as performing actions instead of the deity as operating within, நானெனுஞ்செருக்கு. 4. (p.) An operating cause of transmigration, பிறவிக்குமூலம்; ex அகம் myself, et காரம் that which acts. அகங்காரகிரந்தி--அகங்காரக்கிரந்தி, s. A wanton, vain, presumptuous person. செருக்காய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak proudly, to assume too much. செருக்காய்வளர்க்க, inf. To bring up in a delicate manner, செல்லமாய்வளர்க்க. செருக்குக்காட்ட, inf. To show pride, to be vain, self-important, self-conceited. செருக்குப்பண்ண, inf.. To act proudly, arrogantly, wantonly. படைச்செருக்கு, s. Daring intrepidity, high spirits, vaunting and bravado, &c., of the soldier. செருக்கடிக்க, inf. To vaunt with an inarticulate sound. (c.) பணச்செருக்கு, s. Pride of money. கல்விச்செருக்கு, s. (See சதுரங்கம்.) II. The nine forms of worship practised by the Saiva Yogis. Their classification is: 1. நாமதாரணை, the worship of the Omnipresent God in the form of an image, to which is given his name. அளவிடப்படாதபிர மத்தைநாமத்தினால்வரையறைப்படுத்தல். 2. மாயாதா ரணை, worshipping the Supreme Being, who is unlimited, and without form, by the use of he formule, Maha Vakya (the great speech), accompanied by the entire renunciation of the world. This accords with the practice of the Adwita class of Vedantists, விகாரங்களில்லாதபாமரன் மாவினிடத்தில்புனைந்துரைக்கப்பட்ட பிரபஞ்சவியா பாரமாயையைத்துறப்பதற்குக்கருவியானமகாவாக்கியத் தைப்பொளுணர்ச்சியோடுஉச்சரித்தல். 3. பேததார ணை, an exercise of the Yogi to restrain his bodily affections, by uniting the vital air in the heart, பிராணன், in the podex, அபானன், in the body generally, வியானன், and in the throat, உதானன், these four, with that in the navel, சமானன்; and thus with the inward recital of the mystic O'm, to alter the position of his heart, supposed to be like a lotus flower with eight petals hanging downwards, பலமுறைஇயமாதிகள்செய்து, பிராணன், அபாணன், வியானன், உதானன் என்கிறவாயுக் களைச்சமானவா யுவுடனேசேர்த்து, கீழ்முகமாயிருக்கிற உள்ளக்கமலத் தைமேல்முகமாக்குகை, 4. மந்திரதாரணை, worshipping Siva by the famous five lettered incantation, நமசிவாய--rejecting the mystic O'm--ascribing to him the supremacy, and recognizing the universe as only the manifestation of Siva. Such as do this reject the primitive system, and believe in an all pervading soul of the universe, called Siva, எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் அதிஷ் டானமாய்எவையுமாகிறவன்சிவனேயென்று, பௌ ராணிகமந்திரங்களால்சிவத்தியானஞ்செய்தல். 5. சது ரங்கதாரணை, meditating on the Supreme Being, as one who having purified himself, and suspended his breath, unites the faculties of the mind with the four constituents of the body--earth, water, fire and wind--in the cavity of the crown of the head. This is done when the reason represented by fire; reflection by the wind; the will by water, are joined with resolution or passion, represented by earth, and all co-operate to fix the mind in the air, the seat of Brahma, காய சோதனம்பண்ணுகிறவன் நிலம், நீர், தீ, கால் என் னுஞ்சதுரங்கமாகிய அகங்காரசித்த புத்திமனசென்கிற வைகளைமுறையாக அடக்கி, பின்பு கால்வடிவானம னசை ஆகாயமாகியபிரமத்தானத்தில் சேரும்படிதியா னித்தல். 6. சத்ததாரணை, continual meditation of an ascetic in an immoveable posture, uttering the sounds of அ, உ, ம், or O'm. which represent the deity. This is done while closing the eyes and restraining all the external senses. By the mystic syllable, the வாதநாடி pulse is said to be purified, and its pulsation may be beard. (See கும் பகம்.) பிரமத்தையுணர்த்துகிற பிரணவத்தைத்தியான தாரணசமாதிகளால்அடைந்து, புறக்காணச்செய்கை யற்று, கும்பகத்தானமானவாதநாடியைச்சுத்திபண் ணி, நாதானுசந்தானத்தையடைதல். 7. வஸ்துதார ணை, the mental perception of Brahm, obtained by the firm power of thought, separated from external things, which unites the reason with the will, These combined, produce action or passion, Passion, reason and will are condensed in reflection, by which Brahm is perceived, பிறபொருளையடையாமல்அசைவற்றிருக்கிற மனமானதுபுத்தி, சித்தம், அகங்காரங்கள்மூன்றையு முறையேசேர்த்துக்கொண்டபின், அம்மனத்தால்பிரம த்தைத்தரித்தல். 8. வச்சிரதாரணை, rendering homage to Siva only in the Lingam. rejecting the lower positions which represent Brahma and Vishnu; and renouncing passion, and the corporeal senses, contemplating the divine essence with a fixed mind, பிரமன்வடிவாகியபீடத் தையும், திருமால்வடிவாகியவிவரத்தையும்நீக்கி, இலி ங்கத்தைமாத்திரம்பூசித்தல்என்றால்--அகங்காரத்தை யுஞ்சீவத்துவத்தையும்துறந்து, பரத்துவத்தையேதியா னித்தலாம், 9. சித்திரதாரணை, becoming ripe for absorption and approaching assimilation to the deity, by gaining a knowledge of the twenty-six properties of the body, the soul, and the Supreme Being (ஷட்விம்சகபாவம்). This is obtained by entirely forgetting the austerities practised, repeating continually the மகா வாக்கியம், solely contemplating the benefit to be derived, and then renouncing even that; the soul thus dominates over the immerging principle, arrives at a pure, spiritual knowledge and is merged in the Divinity, சத்தஉச்சரிப்பா லாகியமந்திரப்பிரயோகத்தைநீக்கி, பொருளையே ம னதில் அனுசந்தானம்பண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஷட்விம் சகபாவத்தையடைந்து, பிராரப்தம் என்கிற கர்மபயன் களைமறந்து, சத்தார்த்தங்களையும்விட்டு, அறிவுமயமாயே இருத்தல். 32) *

taicatam (p. 261) s. Belonging to fire, powerful, intense, அக்கினிசம்பந்தம். W. p. 385. TAIJASA. 2. One of the three அகங்காரம், or active powers of the incorporated soul, that connected with சாத்துவிதம் quality. The three அகங்காரம் as given in சிவஞானசித்தி, are பூதாதியகங்காரம், வைகரியகங்காரம், தைசதஅகங் காரம், which see in their places. தைசதஅகங்காரம்--தைசதாகங்காரம், s. The first of the three அகங்காரம். 6) *

pātakam (p. 310) s. [poet. பதகம்.] A grievous sin, a heinous crime, துரோகம். W. p. 524. PATAKA. Note. For the five பாதகம், or heinous sins, see பஞ்சபாதகம். Another classification is seven-fold, as given in சதுர கராதி, being apparently the venial sins of the Romanists; சித்தசமுன்னதி, or அகங்காரம், pride; 2.அருத்தலோபம், or உலோபம், avarice; 3. காமம், lust, lasciviousness; 4. வைஷம்மியம் or பகை, hatred, enmity; 5. அசனப்பிரியம், போசனப்பிரியம், gluttony; 6. கோபம் or காய்தல், anger, malice; 7.அனுஷ்டணம் or சோம்பல், idleness, laziness. பாதகத்துரோகி, s. A perfidious villain, an infamous wretch, கொடும்பாவி. பாதகன், s. [plu. பாதகர், fem. பாதகத்தி, பாதகி.] A vile, desperate sinner, துரோகி. பாதகன்முகத்திலேவிழிக்கப்படாது. Look not on a wicked person. 14)

pūtam (p. 330) s. Any of the five elements. See பஞ்சபூதம். 2. A Bhuta; a goblin, ghost or malignant spirit, employed by magicians and supposed to haunt places where the dead are burnt or buried. Companies of them attend Siva, Ganesa, &c., They are described as dwarfish, with huge pot-bellies, and very small legs, &c., கிருத்திமம். 3. A living being, life, animal power, சீவன். W. p. 623. B'HOOTA. 4. The second lunar asterism, as பரணி. 5. Past time, இறந்தகாலம். 6. The banyan tree, ஆல். 7. One of the five யாகம்.--Note. The elements are described as two-fold: 1. சூட் சுமபூதம், the spiritual or subtle class of elements, types or radicals of the grosser. See தன்மாத்திரை. 2. ஸ்தூலபூதம், the gross or visible elements, which like the former are five: பிருதிவி, or நிலம், earth; 2. அப்பு or நீர், water; 3. தேயு or தீ, fire; 4. வாயு or காற்று, air, or wind; 5. ஆகாசம் or விசும்பு, ether. பூதம்போலே. Any thing great, monstrous, superhuman, &c. பூதகணம்--பூதசேனை, s. companies of Bhutas. பூதகரப்பன்பட்டை, s. The medicinal bark of the பீநாறி tree. பூதகலம்--பூதக்கலம், s. [prov. பூதாக்க லம்.] The giving of food by the bride to the bridegroom for the first time. See பரிமாறு. பூதகாலம், s. Past time, past tense, இறந்தகாலம். பூதகலிக்கம், s. A kind of collyrium used by magicians. See கலிக்கம். பூதக்கண்ணாடி, s. A magnifier, a microscope. பூதக்கால், s. The large leg, elephantiasis, as யானைக்கால். (Old Dic.) பூதசாரம், s. Essence of the elements, formed of or belonging to the elements, elemental, பஞ்சபூதசத்து. 2. What is composed of or belonging to the primitive or spiritual class or elements. பூதசாரசரீரம், s. Bodies composed of spiritual elements. See சூக்குமசரீரம் under சரீரத்திரயம். பூததயை, s. Benevolence to creatures, as சீவகாருண்ணியம். பூததாத்திரி, s. The earth as formed of the five elements; more etymologically as nourishing living beings, பூமி; [ex தாத் திரி.] பூததானியம், s. Sesamum, எள். பூதநாடி, s.
