Distortion of the limbs, by convulsion or otherwise. காலிறால், s. See under இறால். காலுளைவு, v. noun. Soreness, aching or pain in the legs, from cold, walking, &c. காலூன்ற, inf. To set on foot firm on the ground; to become established. காலூன்றிநிற்க, inf. To stand firmly, stand fast. காலூன்றிப்பெய்ய, inf. To rain in torrents--the clouds seeming to rest on the horizon. காலேயரைக்கால், s. A quarter and oneeighth, five-eighths. காலோடேகால்சேர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand with closed legs. கால்கட்டு, s. Inseparableness--as of wife and husband. கால்கட்டுகைகட்டு, Bound hand and foot. 2. (fig.) Confined at home by the sickness of another, by a grown-up daughter, a motherless child, or by urgent business, &c. கால்கழுவ, inf. To wash the feet; metaphorically to clean one's self with water after stool, மலங்கழுவ. கால்கூசுதல், v. noun. Shrinking of the foot in touching rough ground, &c. 2. Recoiling of the legs in stepping into the compound or house of a stranger. 3. Having spasms in the arms, and legs --as in cholera. கால்சீக்க, inf. To root out, exterminate, வேரோடுகளைய. 2. To efface, to obliterate, துடைக்க. 3. To dispel darkness, இருளைஅகற்ற. 4. To scrape with the foot, காலினாற்சீக்க. கால்செய்வட்டம், s. A fan, விசிறி; [ex கால், air, et செய்வட்டம்.] கால்தளர--காறளர inf. To become weak in the limps, by walking, sickness, age, &c. கால்தோல்--காற்றோல் s. [prov.] Leathern defences for toddy-drawers feet in climbing, மரமேறுவோர் காலிலிடுந்தோல். கால்நகம்--கானகம் s. Toe-nail. கால்நடை--கானடை. v. noun. Walking, going on foot--as distinct from riding and driving. 2. s. Sheep and goats; oxen, cattle, ஆடுமாடுகள் அவனுக்குமாட்டில் நூறுகால்நடையுண்டு. He has no-hundred oxen. கால்நடையாய், adv. On foot, a-foot. கால்நடையாய்ப் பிரயாணம்போக, inf. To travel on foot. கால்நோக்கு--கானோக்கு s. One-fourth aspect of a planet, being one of the four aspects. கால்பாவவில்லை. The feet do not seek the ground--recoiling from going. கால்பிடிக்க, inf. To fall at one's feet to ask a favor. 2. To press and rub the legs in order to induce sleep, to shampoo. கால்பின்னிக்கொண்டுநிற்க, inf. To stand cross-legged. கால்பின்னிக்கொள்ள--காலோடேகால் பின்னிக்கொள்ள, inf. To lose the power of walking, legs being crossed. கால்மட்டம், s. [prov.] Use of the feet in walking, by guess or practice--as in the dark or as a blind man. கால்மாடு, s. A halting or hobbling leg. கிந்துகாலன், s. A hobbler. கீற்றரைக்கால், The contracted form of உ, marked thus ,-- as து, நு. கீற்றுக்கால், The contracted form of ஊ, marked thus --as தூ, நூ. See under கீற்று. குதிகால்--குதிங்கால் s. Heel. குந்துகாலன், (fem. குந்துகாலி.) A hobbler, a limping person. 2. A Squatter, a man sitting on the his knees. குந்துகால், s. Tip-toe. 2. Squat, sitting on the heels--as a man. கொம்புக்கால், s. The two signs for ஒ marked thus ெ-ா, as in கொ,சொ,. தோரணக்கால், s. Poles to which strings or ropes adorned with twigs or leaves are tied, to represent triumphal arches. நாற்காலி, s. Chair. பகுதிக்கால், s. The sign of உ, in certain compound characters marked thus --as சு, பு. பகுதிக்காற்பிறை, s. The sign of ஊ, marked --as பூ, யூ. பவளக்காலி, s. The name of a bird, Erythropus longipes, corallinus. பின்னங்கால், s. Hind leg. புள்ளிக்கால், s. The character ள subjoined to the letter உ, to lengthen it. புறங்கால், s. The upper part of the foot, instep. பொய்க்கால், s. A stilt, a false leg-as a wooden one. பொய்க்கால் கட்டியாட, inf. To go upon stilts. மடிப்பங்கால், s. Legs with folded knees. மடிப்பங்கால்போட. inf. (Little used.) கீழ்ப்பாறை, s. A subterranean cell or cavern, கீழறை. (Rott.) 2. An understratum of rock, கீழிருக்கும்பாறை. கீழ்ப்புறம், s. The lower side, the underside, கீழ்ப்பக்கம். 2. The leeward or the leaning side of a vessel, தாழ்ந்தபக்கம். கீழ்மகன், s. A person of low caste, a mean person, இழிந்தோன். 2. The planet saturn, சனி. கீழ்மக்கள், s. Inferiors, low-caste people, the base, the vulgar, the ignorant, இழிந்தோர். கீழ்மாரி--கீழ்வாரி, s. Rain or thunder in the distance, towards the horizon. கீழ்மாரிகொள்ளுகிறது. It thunders at a distance. கீழ்மாரிகொண்டுமுழங்க, inf. To thunder near the horizon. கீழ்வயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, abdomen, அடிவயிறு. கீழ்க்கதுவாயளபெடை, s. [in prosody.] One of the eight அளபெடைத்தொடை, in which the first letter of every foot in a line, except the penultimate, is prolonged in sound. கீழ்க்கதுவாயியைபு, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme in which the last letter of every foot of a line, except the second, is the same ஒரியைபுத்தொடை. கீழ்க்கதுவாயெதுகை, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை, in which the second letter, of every foot of a line, but the penultimate, is the same, ஓரெதுகைத்தொ டை. கீழ்க்கதுவாய், s. [in prosody.] Rhyming or தொடை in every foot but the penultimate; and in இயைபுத்தொடை, in every foot but the second, கதுவாய்த்தொ டையினொன்று. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்முரண், s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை, in which the first word in every foot of a line, except the penultimate, has different meanings, முரண் டொடை. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்மோனை, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை in which the first letter of every foot of a line, but the penultimate, is the same, ஓர்மோனைத்தொடை. கீழ்மை, v. noun. Lowness, meanness, inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. 2. Submissiveness, humbleness, தாழ்மை. கீழண்டை, s. [vul.] East. கீழைத்தெரு, s. The eastern street. கீழைப்புறம், s. The eastern side, part. கீழ்ச்சீமை, s. the eastern country. கீழ்வாடை, s. Charity, any charitable or meritorious act from which future good is expected --as alms-giving; building or endowing temples, contributing to the support of life, human or brute, or the maintenance of religion, or religious establishments. Peculiar or prescribed duty, occupation, &c., according to the different ranks and classes in society--as giving alms, &c., by the house-holder; administering justice, by kings; piety and performing rites by brahmans; courage, bravery in the solider; shaving in the barber, சாதிக்குரிய கருமம். 5. Nature, instinct, characteristic, property or action in animals--as humming in bees, barking in dogs, இயல்பு. 6. Inherent and peculiar qualities in plants, as fragrance in flowers; flavors in fruits, குணம். W. p. 439. DHARMMA.--Note. The negative of the above is அதர்மம், injustice, &c. தருமந்தலைகாக்கும். Some specific book of the law, ஒர்தருமநூல். தருமசத்திரம், s. A rest-house for travellers. தருமசபை, s. Council of arbitrators. தருமசமுஸ்காரம், s. Burying, or burning the deceased poor, அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடு தல். தருமசாட்சி, s. King's evidence, witnesses cited by the king. தருமசாதனப்பட்டையம்--தருமசாத னம், s. A deed of endowment inscribed on copper. See சாதனம். தருமசாது, s. A very mild, patient and benevolent person, தருமிஷ்டி. தருமசாத்திரம், s. A charitable or virtuous disposition, motive, intention, object, &c. தருமசிவாசாரி, s. A name of the gurus of the mercantile caste. தருமசீலன், s. (fem. தருமசீலி.) A charitable person piously disposed. தருமசூட்சுமம், s. A nice and difficult point in pleading. தருமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To do charitable and virtuous acts. தருமதானம், s. Beneficence, charitable gifts. தருமதேவதை, s. The goddess of virtue born from the right breast of Brahma, அம்பாலிகை. 2. The vehicle of Siva in the form of a bull, நந்தி. 3. (fig.) A good woman, உத்தமி.--Note. The goddess is described as placing four feet on the earth in the golden age; three in the next, or silver age; two in the brazen; and only one in the iron age. தருமநடை, s. Moral, religious, virtuous conduct; observing prescribed duties according to one's caste. தருமநாள், s. The third lunar asterism --as பரணி. தருமநியாயம்--தருமநீதி, s. Impartial discussion as given in the code of laws. (c.) தருமநூல், s. Of these, மனு is peculiar to the first age of the world, கிரேதாயுகம்; கௌதமம், to the second, திரேதாயுகம்; சங்கலிதம், to the third, துவாபாயுகம், as well as common to them all; and பராசரம் to the கலியுகம். தருமபத்தினி, s. A corpse buried by public charity. தருமப்பிரபு, s. A man eminent for equity and benevolence. தருமப்பிள்ளை, s. Combat between two champions of equal powers, with the same kind of weapons, and taking no improper advantage. தருமவட்டி, s. Lawful interest. (c.) தருமவாடி, s. An enclosure from which alms are given. தருமவாட்டி--தருமவதி, s. A charitable female. தருமவாளி--தருமவான்--தருமவந்தன், s. A charitable and pious man. (c.) தருமாசனத்தார், s. Judges. தருமாசனம், s. திரோதானம்
tirōtāṉam (p. 241) s. W. p. 377. TIRODHANA. Cover, covering, veil, any thing that hides from sight, மறைப்பு. 2. Disappearance, removal from sight, அதரிசனம். 3. Hiding spiritual things from view, &c., as one of the divine operations embracing five particulars; 1. Obscuring the internal vacuum or spiritual faculty. 2. Causing the illusions of the world to appear as realities, and the deity, and spiritual things as illusions. 3. Inducing the belief that the mental and bodily faculties are the agents in the actions performed, instead of the soul, or the deity operating through the soul. 4. வேதம்
vētam (p. 402) s. The holy books of the Hindus--said to have been revealed by Brahma, but compiled from tradition by vyasa. They are four in number; 1. இருக்கு, Rig Veda, chiefly relating to ritual worship; 2. எசுர், Yajur Veda, concerning the ceremonies observed in sacrifices; 3. சாமம், Sama Veda, containing odes, hymns and chants; 4. அதர்வ ணம், Atharvan'a, with mantras or magical formulas, the least esteemed of the four. உபவேதம், s. The four secondary sciences. These are அருத்தவேதம், commentary on the Vedas; ஆயுர்வேதம், Physic; காந்தருவவேதம், music; தனுர்வேதம், archery. வேதகலாபம், s. Religious persecution. வேதக்காரர், s. Brahmans skilled in one or more of the Vedas. (R.) 2. [Heathen usage.] Roman Catholics. வேதக்கொடியோன், s. An epithet of Dron'acharya as the Veda-bannered, துரோணாசாரியன். (சது.) வேதசாஸ்திரம், s. The four Vedas and six Shastras collectively. 2. [corrup. usage.] Theology. வேதசாஸ்திரி, s. One learned in the Vedas and Shastras. 2. [not authorized.] A theologian. வேதசாட்சி, s. [R, C, usage,] A martyr. வேதசாரம், s. [lit. the essence of religion.] The title of a book. 2. A reed, நாணற்புல். வேதநாயகன், s. The Deity as lord of the Vedas, பிரமன், கடவுள். வேதநூல், s. A religious system. வேதபாரகர், s. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 2. Those who are well versed in the Vedas, See பாரகர். 3. [Chris. usage.] Scribes, expounders of the Jewish law. வேதபாராயணம், s. Study of the Vedas. வேதபுஸ்தகம், s. [Christ. usage.] The Bible. வேதப்புரட்டு, v. noun. Perversion of the Vedas. 2. [in Christ. usage.] Corruption of the true religion, heresy. வேதமாயாவாதம், s. A religious sect. வேதமுதல்வி, s. An epithet of Sarasvati, Lukshmi and Parvati. வேதமோத, inf. To recite the Vedas; [ex ஓது.] வேதரஞ்சகன், s. Brahma, பிரமன். வேதவியாக்கியானம், s. [Chris. usage.] Expounding the Scriptures. வேதவியாசர், s. Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas. வேதன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Jupiter, வியாழம். 3. Argha, அருகன். வேதா, s. God, கடவுள். 2. Brahma, பிரமன். (சது.) வேதாகமம், s. Authoritative books corresponding with the Vedas. 2. [Chris. usage.] The Bible. வேதாக்கிரேசர், s. Chief teachers of the Vedas. வேதாக்கினி, s. A sacrificial fire. See அக்கினி. வேதாங்கம், s. Sciences subordinate to the Vedas, of which there are six: 1. மந்திரம், mantras; 2. நிகண்டு, vocabulary; 3. வியாகரணம், grammar; 4. சந்தோபிசிதம், prosody; 5. நிருத்தம், explanation of mystic words; 6. சோதிடம், astronomy, astrology.--According to Wils. சிட்சை and கற்பம், are given for the first two. வேதாந்தம், s. [lit. the end of the Vedas.] A refined system of philosophy taught by Vyasa in the Uttara-mimamsa, and reduced by himself to 5 stanzas. It was commented on by Madevacharya, Sankaracharya, and Ramanujacharya, severally in the Dwaita, Adwaita, and Visishta--adwaita systems. The first and last allow a distinct existence of matter, but not its eternity. The second denies the real existence of matter, and resolves all existence into God. The Vedanta, simply stated, is a system of Pantheism. See அத்துவிதம் and துவிதம். 2. The thirty-two Upanishads, or appendixes, to the Vedas. See சாஸ்திரம். வேதாந்தசூடாமணி, s. A metaphysical treatise by சிவப்பிரகாசதேசிகர். வேதாந்தமதஸ்தாபனம், s. Establishing the doctrines of the Vedanta system. வேதாந்தன்--வேதார்த்தன், s. God as the object of the Vedas, கடவுள். வேதாந்தி, s. [pl. வேதாந்திகள்.] One skilled in the Vedanta. வேதோக்தம், s. That which is scriptural or declared in the Vedas. 24) *
