அளவை
aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

ākamam (p. 34) s. Sacred writings, divine science, shasters prescribed by the deity, முதல்வன்வாக்கு. 2. A set of sacred works connected with the Siva sect, twentyeight in number, containing directions for the various rites of the system and much other abstruse matter, not deemed proper to be read by the vulgar, சிவாகமம். 3. [in grammar.] Insertion of letters and particles, மிகுதல். (வீரசோழியம்.) Wils. p. 15. AGAMA. 4. Learning, கல்வி. (p.) ஆகமப்பிரமாணம், s. One of the eight laws of evidence or modes of ascertaining truth from the instructions of learned men. (p.) ஆகமமலைவு, s. Any thing contrary to the doctrines of the Agamas, ஆகமவிதிக்குமுரண். ஆகமவளவை, s. See அளவை. 23)

āriṭam (p. 41) --ஆரிஷம், s. That which is related, belonging to, or derived from the Rishis, இருஷிசம்பந்தமானது. 2. One of the eight forms of marriage, அஷ்டமணத்தி லொன்று. See மணம். 3. The Vedas, வேதம். Wils. p. 12. ARSHA. 4. Science, learning, கல்வி. 5. Moral, religious and judicial knowledge, learning communicated by Rishis, ஆகமம்; [ex ரிஷி, a Rishi or sage.] 6. Worship, பூசை. 7. Slippery ground, வழுக்குநிலம். (p.) ஆரிடர், s. The Jainas, சமணர். 2. Rishis, இருடிகள். (p.) 25) *
உபதேசம்
upatēcam (p. 61) s. [pref. உப.] Spiritual instruction, teaching, doctrine, போத கம். 2. (fig.) Advice in general, புத்தி. 3. The initiation of the pupil into the mysteries of his religion, சமயாசாரவுபதேசம். 4. A form of secret instruction, incantations, &c., given by the Guru to his disciple, on his admission into any of the four stages or degrees, மந்திரோபதேசம். Wils. p. 154. UPADESHA. குரூபதேசந்தவறாதவன். One who deviates not from the instructions of his Guru. உபதேசகலை, s. That portion of the Vedas which treats of the divine attributes, operations, &c. See ஆகமம், also தந்திரகலை and மந்திரகலை. உபதேசகன், s. A teacher, an instructor, போதகன். Wils. p. 154. UPADESHAKA. உபதேசஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To give spiritual advice in secret, according to the proficiency, attainments, devotedness, &c., of the disciple. 2. To give advice, to instigate, &c. உபதேசம்பண்ண, inf. To initiate one into the mysteries of the religion by teaching the formul&ae;, &c. மந்திரோபதேசம், s. Teaching the muntra to the disciple. ஞானோபதேசம், s. Instruction in religious mysteries, a catechism. 33)
காரணம்
kārṇm (p. 104) s. Cause, origin, source, தோற்றத்துக்கு மூலம். 2. Principle, essential element, மூலம். 3. Instrument or means, கருவி. 4. [in logic.] Cause, reason, the ground of an assertion or argument, ஏது. occasion, நோக்கம். Wils. p. 213. KARANA. 6. One of the twenty-eight Agamas, ஆகமம் இருபத்தெட்டிலொன்று. According to the Hindu Philosophy, காரணம் is three fold, viz.: முத ற்காரணம், துணைக்காரணம், நிமித்தகாரணம், முத ற்காரணம், material, proximate cause--as clay from which pottery is made, or the primitive Maya out of which the universe was produced. துணைக்காரணம், secondary, instrumental, or co-efficient cause--as the wheel used by a potter, or the Sakti (energy) of the god Siva. நிமித்தகாரணம், the efficient cause or the agent--as the potter, in the manufacture of wares, or the god Siva in the production of worlds. சர்வத்துக்குமாதிகாரணமானவர். The first cause or creator of all things. காரணகர்த்தா--காரணகடவுள் s. The Supreme Being--the Chief Agent in all things, முதற்கடவுள். 2. Any supposed miracle-working deity, அற்புத கடவுள். காரணகாட்சி, s. Demonstration 'a priori', or from an axiom. Rott. 2. A pleasing and marvellous sight. காரணகாரியம், s. Cause and effect, காரமுங்காரியமும். காரணகுரு, s. A guru whose sole object is the spiritual benefit of his disciples, மெய்க்குரு--opposed to கரியகுரு. காரணக்குறி, s. [in gram.] Derived names or appellatives, as one of the classes of nouns--opposed to இடுகுறி,கார ணப்பெயர். 2. Presage, omen, prognostic, a sign showing beforehand what is to happen, முன்னறிகுறி. காரணங்காட்ட, inf. To affirm a cause, to ascribe or show reasons, ஏதுகாட்ட. காரணகேவலம், s. Absolute unconsciousness of the soul during its involution in காரணமாயை. It is one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசகலம், s. Conscious state of the soul during its manifestation in the world, and consequent subjection to births and deaths; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசரீரம், s. The most subtile embryo of the body, as originally and eternally existing with the soul. (See சரீரத்திரயம்.) In the Vedantic philosophy, the original principle of spiritual ignorance, in which the soul is enveloped during the period of its non-absorption in Brahm. காரணசுத்தம், s. Complete liberation from பாசம், and the attainment of perfect purity and happiness; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names limited in their application--as முடி, a crown so called because it is put on முடி, the head, ஒன் றற்குரியகாரணப்்பெயர். காரணச்சொல், s. A story, a narrative, கதை. (p.) 2. A derived word. காரணப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derivative names. காரணப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names extending to various classes--as அணி, jewel; so called because it embraces various kinds of jewels, which are worn, பலவற்றிற்குரியகார ணப்பெயர். காரணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be the author of the thing. காரணமாயை, s. Maya as the primitive, original substance from which all the manifestations of matter and spirit are evolved, and into which they are again resolved at the destruction of the universe, அகிலத்துக்கும் வித்தானமாயை. see மாயை. காரணமுகாந்திரம், s. Motive. காரணவணு, s. According to some atheistical schools, primitive or original atoms, by the fortuitous combination of which, the worlds were originated. காரணவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the cause is, by the way of metonymy, used for the effect--as in திருவாசகம். காரணவிசேஷம், s. Chief or principal things. (p.) காரணவிடுகுறி, s. A name which, though given originally as descriptive of a class of objects, is applied to individuals of the class, though destitute of the qualities which it describes--as மறவன், கறங்கு. காரணவிலக்கணை, s. [in rhetoric.] Metonymy of a cause for the effect. காரணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Negation of effects from the absence of a cause, ஓரலங்காரம். காரணன், s. The first cause, நிமித்தன். 2. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 3. Any deity supposed to work miracles, அற் புதகடவுள். 4. A king, அரசன். 5. The name of a kind of arsenic, மிரதபாஷாணம். காரணாவத்தை--காரணாவஸ்தை, s. The three principal, causative states or அவத் தை of the soul--கேவலம், சகலம் and சுத்தம், --as distinguished from காரியாவத்தை. காரணானுமானம், s. [in logic.] A priori reasoning; inference from cause to effect --opposed to காரியானுமானம். (சிவ. சி.) மூலகாரணம், s. The primeval cause. மொழிமுதற்காரணம், s. The first principle of a word. காரணி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி. 103)
சாங்குசித்தன்
cāngkucittaṉ (p. 174) s. [prov.] One who is but partially enlightened, and applies to a Guru for instruction in the mystical parts of religion; being from one of the three classes eligible to study the Agamas, ஆகமம்படிக்குமூவகையாரிலொருவன். 52) *
சித்தம்
cittam (p. 182) s. Will, volition, one of the four faculties of the mind, உட்கரணநான்கி னொன்று. 2. Purpose, determination, resolution, pleasure, choice, உள்ளக்கருத்து. (c.) 3. The mind or heart as the seat of affection, காருண்ணியமனம். W. p. 325. CHITTA. 4. An established truth; a tenet or doctrine maintained by certain authorities, சித்தாந் தம். 5. Truth, certainty, உண்மை. 6. One of the twenty-seven astrological Yogas, யோகமிருபத்தேழிலொன்று. W. p. 924. SIDD'HA. 7. One of the twenty-eight Saiva Agamas, ஆகமமிருபத்தெட்டிலொன்று. உம்முடையசித்தம். According to your pleasure, as you please. சித்தத்தின்படி--சித்தமானபடி. According to one's pleasure, choice, &c. தங்கள் சித்தமெங்கள்பாக்கியம். Your pleasure is the source of our happiness; if you will it, we are made happy. சித்தசமாதானம், s. Certainty or steadfastness of mind in religion. 2. Peace of mind, tranquility, calmness. சித்தசமுசயம், s. Doubt of mind, hesitation, indetermination. (p.) சித்தசாந்தி, s. Stoical tranquility of mind, extinction of volitional feeling, &c., as attained by the ஞானி. (p.) சித்தசலனம், s. Agitation of mind, perturbation, disgust. See சலனம். சித்தஸ்வாதீனம், s. Command of one's will, self-control. சித்தஞ்செய்ய, inf. To settle, decide, give a final judgement, தீர்மானிக்க. 2. To will, desire; to direct, command; to be pleased, ஆக்கியாபிக்க. 3. To make ready, தயார்பண்ண. (Colloq.) சித்தத்தியாகம்--சித்தநிவர்த்தி, s. [prov.] Renunciation, entire subjection or extinction of the will and of secular purposes, resolves, desires, &c.,--as attained by severe abstract devotion in one ripening for liberation from births; absolute quiescence. See தியாகம். சித்தத்திற்கொள்ள, inf. To will, resolve, purpose, choose, prefer. சித்தந்திரும்ப--சித்தம்வர, inf. To be pleased to do, &c. (c.) சித்தப்பிரமை, s. Aberration of mind, infatuation, fascination, stupefaction, bewilderment, மனமயக்கு. 2. Derangement, madness; [ex பிரமை, stupor.] சித்தமாக, inf. To will, to desire; to purpose, resolve. (c.) சித்தமிரங்க, inf. To condescend, to be pleased, to do a favor, &c. சித்தயோகம், s. [in astrol.] A conjunction of the lunar constellations with the days of the week and of the phases of the moon,-- not deemed very favorable; the twenty-first of the twenty-seven yogas, யோகமிருபத்தேழிலொ ன்று. 2. One of the three யோகம் neither favorable, nor unfavorable. See யோகம். சித்தலயம், s. Extinction of the will and identification of the soul with the Supreme, as obtained by the ascetic; [ex இலயம்.] சித்தவிலாசம், s. Increase of volitions or of yielding to desires after earthly objects--oppo. to சித்தலயம். சாத்திரசித்தம், s. The sentiment or meaning of the shastras. 2. Tenets, opinions, &c., inculcated in the shastras. திடச்சித்தம், s. A firm, resolute mind. 60) *
