Severe or rigorous treatment, torture, ordeal, சோதனாதண்டனை. 4. One of the six ஆதாரம், Which see. எல்லோர்களுமெங்களாக்கினைக்குட்பட்டேவல்கே ட்டுநடக்கும்படிக்கு. In order that all may submit to our power, and act in obedience to our commands. ஆக்கினாசக்கரம், s. The discusweapon, as held by some ancient kings, in token of absolute and universal power. ākku (p. 36) கிறேன், ஆக்கினேன், வேன், ஆக்க, v. a. To cause to be, create, effect, make, உண்டாக்க. 2. To cook, to mature. to accomplish, சமைக்க. 3. To raise one from obscurity, want, distress, danger, கைதூக்கிவிட. It is frequently joined with nouns to form compound verbs, as குண மாக்குதல், &c.; [ex ஆ, v.] ஆக்கல்--ஆக்குகை--ஆக்குதல், v. noun. Conjuration, adjuration, obstructing a procedure by oath; checking by oath a beast ready to fall on one, or a law proceeding; an appeal by oath to a superior--as to the deity, the king, &c., obstructing or hindering--as the water from flowing over one's land, &c., கட்டு. 5. To disregard conjuration or interdiction. ஆணையிட, inf. To take an oath, swear. 2. To adjure one. ஆணைவழிநிற்றல், v. noun. In Indian physiology six regions are given; viz.: 1. மூலாதாரம், situated between the anus குதம், and the genitals, குய்யம். 2. சுவாதிட்டானம், situated in the genitals, இலிங்கபீடம். 3. மணி பூரகம், in the navel, உந்திக்கமலம். 4. அனாகதம். in the heart, இருதயகமலம். 5. லிசுத்தி, in the root of the tongue, அடிநா. 6. ஆஞ்ஞை or ஆக்கினை, in the forehead, புருவமத்தியம். ஆதாரசிலை, s. iṭu (p. 45) கிறேன், இட்டேன், வேன், இட, v. a. To set, put on as ornaments, தரிக்க. 2. To put in, deposit, keep, வைக்க. 3. To give, bestow, grant, devote, appropriate, ஈய. 4. To throw, case, poke out, poke or thrust into, எறிய. 5. To designate, appropriate, assign, allot, destine, dictate, விதிக்க. 6. To pour, shower, சொரிய.--As an expletive, it is joined to the gerunds of other verbs in which, it sometimes gives additional force or emphasis to the action expressed, or serves as a kind of finish, வினையெச்சத்தோடுசேர்ந்தோர்பகுதிநீர்மைத்தா ய்வருவது.--The gerund இட்டு is sometimes used to express cause, instrumentality, &c.--as, அவனையிட்டிந்தப்பழிவந்தது, this disgrace happened through him. மரத்தினிற்பறவைக்கிடுகலேபோலப்பாதகமனைத்துந் தொலைத்திடும். It will drive away every evil, as a stone thrown at birds in a tree puts them to flight. இடுகடை, s. A door or gate where much liberality is exercised, கொடுப்போனில்வாயில். (p.) இடுகறல், s. Fuel, விறகு. (நிக ண்டு.) (p.) இடுகாடு, s. A burying place, பிரே தம்புதைக்குமிடம். 2. A place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. இடுகுறி--இடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. Arbitrary names of things, primitive terms. இடுகுறிச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A specific term or primitive nouns not common to all--as தெ ங்கு, a cocoanut tree. இடுகுறிப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A generic term, or primitive common noun--as மரம், tree or trees. இடுதங்கம், s. Refined gold, gold of the best quality, புடமிடுதங்கம். 2. Gold inlaid, set, mounted, &c., கல்நகையிலுள் ளிடுதங்கம். இடுதண்டம், s. A penalty, விதிக் கப்பட்ட ஆக்கினை. 2. A penalty, fine, mulct, அநியாயதண்டம். இடுதிரை, s. A curtain, திரைச் சீலை. இடுமருந்து, s. A philter, வசமாக்க விடுமருந்து. இட்டறுதி, s. A fixed time or limit, நியமித்தவெல்லை. 2. A critical time, இரண்டுக்குற்றகாலம் 3. Destitution, extreme want, வறுமை. இட்டுக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. uḷ (p. 67) s. The inside, the interior, that which is intrinsic, private, secret, esoteric, உள்ளிடம், 2. Mind, heart, soul, breast, உள்ளம். 3. Place, இடம். 4. As a nominal affix or postposition, it governs the dative and expresses in, within, among, of, out of, inner, interior, intrinsic, esoteric, ஏழ னுருபு. உள்ளிருந்தார்க்குத்தெரியுமுள்வருத்தம். Those of the household only are acquainted with its secret sorrows. உட்கரணம், s. The intellectual faculties. See இந்திரியம் and கரணம். உட்கருத்து, s. The inmost thought, the real purpose or motive, அகக்கருத்து. 2. Cordial affection, உட்பட்சம். 3. The intrinsic meaning of a passage, &c., கருத்துரை. உட்கருத்தாகப்பேச, inf. To speak with reservation. உட்களவு, s. Guile, deceit, treacherousness, insidiousness, உள்வஞ்சகம். உட்கள்ளம், s. Deep-seated viciousness, dissimulation, உள்வஞ்சகம். 2. Internal, or unsubdued disease, hidden humor or matter--as in a boil, கட்டியினுள் விஷம். உட்காங்கை, s. Caloric, latent heat, உட்சூடு. உட்காந்த, inf. To have internal heat causing emaciation; [ex காந்து.] உட்காய்ச்சல், s. Internal fever, அகச்சுரம். 2. Inward anger, rancor, malice, &c., உள்ளெரிப்பு. உட்கிராந்த, inf. To become emaciated by disease or otherwise. 2. To be firmly rooted--as disease. உட்குத்துப்புறவீச்சு, s. A species of hepatic complaint attended with convulsions, ஓர்நோய். உட்குயிர், s. The Deity regarded as the life, or identified with the life or soul of each individual, உள்ளுயிர். உட்குறிப்பு, s. Aim, object, intention, உள்ளக்குறிப்பு. உட்குற்றம், s. Innate depravity. See உட்பகை. உட்கூதல், s. Internal cold, chill, slight fever. உட்கை, s. Palm of the hand, உள்ளங்கை. 2. A person who is privy to, a secret hand--as in உள்ளுளவு. 3. Turning to the left in dancing or other movements, இடக்கைச்சுற்று. உட்கைச்சுற்று, s. Turning to the left, winding or turning back wards, or contrary to the sun. உட்கொள்ள, inf. To eat as a god, or great personage, உண்ண. 2. To take food that has been consecrated to a deity, தேவப்பிரசாதமுட்கொள்ள. 3. To take food, medicine, to swallow, take in, imbibeas the earth does the rain, &c., விழுங்க. 4. To receive into the mind, meditate, or reflect upon, மனதிற்கொள்ள. 5. To wish for an occurrence, or to express desires mentally--as a deity or holy sage (the thing desired instantly talking place), திருவுளங்கொள்ள. 6. To have a secret object in view, to have in view, உட்கருத. உட்கோபம், s. Interior anger, malice. உட்கோள், s. The will, determination, internal, or inmost thought, உட்கருத்து. 2. Wish of the heart. 3. Opinion, belief, tenet, கோட்பாடு. உட்சங்கம், s. A select society, a committee, அகச்சங்கம். உட்சட்டை, s. An inner vest or tunic. உட்சமயம், s. The six religious systems of the followers of Siva, அகச் சமயம். உட்சாடை, s. The real object of an affair, the real feeling of the heart, உட்கருத்து. 2. Exposure of secrets by one of a party by signs, இரகசியங்களைச்ச மிக்கையாலறிவிக்கை. 3. The meaning, thing, &c., told or known to one's own party and differing from that which is made known to others, குழூஉக்குறி. உட்சீலை, s. An under or inner cloth. 2. The lining of a garment. உட்சவர், s. An inner wall, அகச் சுவர். 2. The interior of a wall, சுவரி னிடை. உட்சுவரிருக்கப்புறச்சுவர்தீற்றுகிறது. To whitewash the outside wall while neglecting the inside; i. e. to be scrupulously exact in external conduct, while the heart is full of wickedness; to attend to things remote while those at hand are neglected. உட்சூத்திரம், s. The main spring in a machine, any internal power or operation concealed from view, மூலசூத் திரம். 2. A clue, or key to an affair, உள்ளுபாயம். 3. The main spring in a business, மூலகாரணம். 4. A skilfully contrived rule in numbers, &c., நுட்பமான வகை. 5. A short, compendious and subtle method of ascertaining, or effecting a thing, இலேசானவகை. 6. (fig.) Internal meaning of a passage, real object in view, உட்குறிப்பு. உட்செல்ல, inf. To enter, insinuate one's self, உள்ளேபோக. உட்டுளை, s. Hollowness--as of a pipe or tube. உட்டுளைப்பொருள், s. Any thing tubular. உட்டெளிவு, s. Cleverness of mind, freedom from doubt, profound knowledge, அகத்தெளிவு. 2. The clear part of the liquid--as poured off from the sediment, வடித்தசாறு. 3. Soundness--as in timber, &c., உள்வைரம். 4. Inner measurment. உட்டேட்டம், s. The secret object or pursuit, as differing from profession, or appearances, மனநாட்டம். 2. Property acquired and kept secretly, உட்சம்பத்து. உட்பகை, s. Internal enmity, hatred or grudge, rancor at heart with professions of friendship. 2. Internal, innate, or secret foes attached to the soul, causing actions, &c., காமாதிக்குற்றங் கள். (For the six உட்பகை, see பகை.) 3. Hatred of a king by his professed friends, civil conspiracy, அரசருட்பகை. எட்பகவன்சிறுமைத்தேயாயினுமுட்பகையுள்ள தாங்கேடு. Though the internal hatred be as the fragment of a grain of rape seed, the consequent evil may be very great. உட்பக்கம், s. Subject of investigation or deduction in things of a mental, mystic, or spiritual character. See பக்கம். உட்பட, inf. To enter, be within, or under--as in age, உள்ளாக. 2. To engage in, be concerned in, to be, or become one of a party, or community; to be involved in, to be subject to, to yield to, to be obedient to, உடன்பட. 3. adv. Together with, inclusive. மூன்றுவயதுக்குட்பட்டபிள்ளை. A child under three years of age. அதுட்பட. That inclusive. மோசத்துக்குட்பட, inf. To fall into danger. உட்படி, s. A make-weight, உட்ப டிக்கல். உட்படுத்த, inf. To cause to enter, to introduce, அகப்படுத்த. 2. To persuade, proselyte, bring one into, or over to one's party, மதத்துக்குள்ளாக்க. 3. To include, involve, entrap, ensnare, சிக்கப்பண்ண. உட்பத்தியம், s. Abstinence from venery as a regimen while taking medicine, &c.; sometimes அகப்பத்தியம். உட்பந்தி, s. The chief row or table of guests, அகப்பந்தி. உட்பலம், s. Property at command, திரவியபலம். 2. Friends, assistants, attendants, &c., துணைவர்பலம். 3. Forces, army, army in reserve, சேனாபலம். 4. Strength, firmness of body, hardness, strength from food, தேகபலம். உட்பற்று, s. Internal attachment, affections of the heart, &c. See அகப்பற்று. உட்பிரவேசம், s. Entrance. உட்பிரவேசிக்க, inf. To enter, உள்ளேபோக, உட்புக.--Note. This and the preceding word are in use, but not, it is thought, on good authority. உட்புக, inf. To enter, engage in. உட்புகுந்துபேச, inf. To make professions of friendship, kindness, concern, &c. உட்புரை, s. The hollow of a tube or pipe, உட்டுளை. 2. The small folds of a garment, உள்மடிப்பு. 3. (fig.) The secret of the matter, internal affair, அந்தரங்கம். உட்புறம், s. The inside, உட்பக்கம். உட்பொருள்--உள்ளர்த்தம், s. The real meaning, தாற்பரியம். 2. See மடை. உண்மட்டைநார், s. [prov.] The bark of the inner side of the palmyra stem, being the best for use. உண்மாசு, s. Corruption of mind-as உபமலம். உண்முடிச்சு, s. Treachery by which one inveigles another, (lit.) an inner knot, உட்கள்ளம். உள்யோசனை, s. Secret object, project, intention, &c., உள்ளாலோசனை. உள்வட்டம், s. The share in the produce of a field which comes to the owner. உள்விழ, inf. To fall in, or with, join a party, &c., உள்ளாக. 2. To assume the appearance of friendship for a sinister object; to pretend kindness, காரியார்த்த மாய்ச்சிநேகிக்க. உள்விழுத்த, inf. v. a. To join a person on professions of friendship in order to deceive and entrap him, &c. உள்வினை, s. Malice, evil in the heart kept secret, long indulged, &c., உட்பகை. 2. Inherited fate, ஊழ்வினை. உள்வீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. See சன்னி. உள்வெக்கை, s. Internal heat of the system, உள்வெப்பு. உள்வெட்டு, s. A pad placed between a load and the back of an ox. உள்ளங்கம், s. Symmetry of mind, the internal property or quality. See அகத்துறுப்பு. உள்ளங்கால், s. The sole of the foot. உள்ளங்கை, s. The palm of the hand. உள்ளடங்கிப்போக, inf. To be shut, shut in, to be swallowed up. உள்ளடக்க, inf. To enclose, shut in, shut up in a place. 2. To conceal, to keep secret. உள்ளடக்கம், v. noun. kṉ (p. 102) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To be heavy, to become heavy, massive, solid, thick, hard, injurated, பாரமா யிருக்க. 2. To be thick, close, crowded, numerous, பருக்க. 3. To be abundant, copious, to outweigh, &c., அதிகரிக்க; the infinitive used adverbially expresses very much. கனக்கக்கொடுத்தான். He gave plentifully. கனத்தஉடைமைக்கனர்த்தமில்லை. A numerous family. கனத்ததோல், s. Thick skin--as that of a beast or of the hand, &c., hardened and thickened by labor. கனத்தநாள், s. A critical day in diseases--as the day of new or full moon, &c., when the influence of the planets is unusually powerful, aggravating disease, &c. On such days it is deemed improper to bathe, take medicine, &c. (c.). கனத்தபயிர், s. A thick crop. கனத்தபனி, s. A heavy dew. கனத்தமனிதன், s. A large heavy man. சரீரங்கனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To become heavy--as the body, by disease, humors, corpulency, &c. தலைகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To grow heavy--as the head through cold. வயிறுகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To have indigestion. 2. To eat a belly-full, to be well stuffed. 3. To become gravid; sometimes in this meaning, spoken in contempt, of pregnancy from illicit intercourse. கனப்பு, v. noun. [vul.] Thickness, becoming thick, கனம். 2. Weight, heaviness, solidity, gravidity, பாரம். 3. The hardness of a swelling, அழுத்தம். 4. stoutness, lustiness, grossness, கொழுப்பு. 5. Pride, self-importance, இறுமாப்பு. உன்கனப்பெடுத்துப்போடுவேன். I will reduce you. சரீரக்கனப்பு, s. Heaviness of the body--as in plethora, &c. தலைக்கனப்பு, s. Heaviness in the head. வயிற்றுக்கனப்பு, s. Heaviness of the system from indigestion, constipation, &c. 29)

A stanza curiously constructed, of a few letters in the periphery and radii of a circle, to be repeated over and over in the reading, ஓர்மிறைக்கவி.--It embraces three varieties; viz.: நான்காரைச்சக்கரம்.ஆறா ரைச்சக்கரம் and எட்டாரைச்சக்கரம். (தண்டி.) அவனுக்கிதோடேசக்கரமறுதி. His course of life will end with this. சக்கரத்தில் கிடந்தாடுகிறான். He is captivated, enamored--said of a lover. 2. His mind is engrossed, as by the love of money, &c. சக்கரயூகம், s. The circular array of an army--as சகடயூகம். சக்கரவாவி, s. A circular tank famed in mythology. சக்கராகாரம், s. A circular figure, roundness, விருத்தவடிவு. வில்லைச்சக்கராகாரமாய் வளையவாங்கினான். He bent his bow in a circle. (இராமா.) சக்கரபாணி, s. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 2. Durga, துர்க்கை; [ex பாணி, hand.] சக்கராயுதத்தி--சக்கராயுதி, s. Durga-the discus-armed, துர்க்கை. (p.) சக்கராயுதன், s. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. சக்கரன், s. A discus-bearer in general, சக்கரந்தரித்தோன். 2. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. சக்கரந்திரிக்க, inf. To turn a wheel, as a potter, &c. சக்கரஞ்சுற்ற, inf. To revolve--as a wheel, a planet, &c. 2. To perform a kind of whirling play. (c.) சக்கரத்தேர், s. The circle of planetary signs, or influences occurring in one's life, as given in the horoscope. சக்கரஸ்தாபனம், s. Engraving magical circles on amulets, &c. சக்கரமடைத்தல், v. noun. Making diagrams with appropriate letters on charms, &c. (c.) பூச்சக்கரம், s. A zone of the earth; the mundane sphere, the earth. சக்கராக்கினை, s. An arbitrary punishment inflicted on a person by a despot. 2. The decree of a monarch. (R.) சக்கராங்கனம்--சக்கராங்கிதம், s. The mark of the chakram upon the shoulders, with a hot iron. (R.) சக்கரவர்த்தி--சக்கரேசுரன்--சக்கரேசு வரன், s. An emperor, a monarch. சக்கராதிபதி, s. An independent sovereign. சக்கரபரிபாலனம்பண்ண, inf. To reign, to govern a country. சக்கரப்பொறி, s. A kind of guillotine, ஓர்தண்டனைக்கருவி. சக்கரவாகம்--சக்கரவாகப்புள், s. The ruddy goose--as சக்கரம். 9. சக்கரவாளம்--சக்கரவாளகிரி, s. A range of mountains supposed to encircle the golden region which bounds the 7th circumambient continent and sea. 25)

cumttu (p. 194) கிறேன், சுமத்தினேன், வேன், சு மத்த, v. a. To place a burden, to load, to lade, பாரஞ்சுமத்த. 2. To cast, impose a debt, obligation, tax, &c., to impute, கட ன்முதலியனசுமத்த. 3. To charge with fault, expenses, &c., குற்றமேற்ற. 4. To inflict punishment, to condemn. ஆக்கினைசுமத்த. (c.) சுமத்திவைக்க, inf. To impute, charge upon, attribute. சுமத்திவிட, inf. To charge upon one --as a fault, &c. குற்றஞ்சுமத்த, inf. To charge with fault, accuse. கடன்சுமத்த, inf. To trust one with goods by little and little. 2. To lend one money, making him a debtor. 3. purāṇam (p. 325) s. Antiquity, பழமை. 2. Ancient story; a purana, a legendary tale containing accounts of gods, heroes, Rishis, &c., பழங்கதை. (c.) புராணம், 18. The eighteen principal puranas are; 1. சைவம், Saiva. 2. காந்தம், Skanda; 3. இலிங்கம், Linga; 4. கூர்மம், Kurma; 5. வாமனம், Vamana; 6. வராகம், Varaka; 7. பௌடிகம் or பவிஷியம், Bhavishyat or prophetic; 8. மச்சியம், Matsya; 9. மார்க்கண்டேயம், Markandeya; 1. பிர மாண்டம், Bra'hmanda or egg of Brahma. According to சதுரகராதி, these are Saiva puranas. 11. நாரதீயம், Naradiya; 12. பாகவதம்; Bagavat, describing the ten incarnations of Vishnu; 13. காரூடம், Garuda; 14. வைணவம், Vaishnava. These four are Vaishnava puranas. 15. பிரமம், Brahma; 16. பதுமம், Patma or the lotus. These two are Brahma puranas. 17. பிரமகைவர்த்தம்; Brahmakaivarta, or transformations of Brahma or Krishna; purana of the sun. 18. ஆக்கினேயம், Agneya, of the god of fire.--Note. The above were all written in Sanscrit and but few of them are yet translated into Tamil. There are also eighteen secondaries, called உபபுராணம், and many of an inferior order, called ஸ்தலபுராணம், written in praise of sacred places. புராணங்கேட்க, inf. To hear the puranas read.
