One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

iṉm (p. 57) s. Kindred, relations, connections, affinity, relationship, சுற்றம். 2. Class, kind, species, caste, sort, குலம். 3. Association (with persons), union, fellowship, சம்பந்தம். 4. A company, collective body, a society, association, கூட்டம். 5. Flock, herd, shoal, swarm, திரள். 6. Attendants of kings, royal household, அரசர்க் குறுதிச்சுற்றம். See உறுதிச்சுற்றம். இனக்கட்டு, s. Family ramifications, connections, உறவின்முறை. 2. Bond of union between relations, பந்துக்கட்டு. 3. Subordination, due respect, &c. among the several branches of a family, relative bonds, முறைமை. இனஞ்சனம்--இனத்தார்சனத்தார், s. Relations, kindred and connexions, சுற்றத்தார். இனமொழிவிடை, s. One of the five kinds of இறைபயப்பது--an indirect answer. இனமோனை, s. A rhyme where the letters which begin a line or foot are not the same as those of the next line or foot, but of the same class, இன வெழுத்தால்வருமோனை. If the letters are of the வல்லினம் class, the rhyme is called வல்லினமோனை; if of the மெல்லினம் class, the rhyme is மெல்லினமோனை; if of the இடையினம் class, the rhyme is இடையின மோனை. இனம்பிரிக்க, inf. To divide into classes. இனம்பிரிய, inf. To be separated from the company. இனவழி, s. Descent from the same line or ancestry. 2. Being related to the same breed of cattle. இனவெதுகை, s. A species of rhyme in which the second letters of each stanza are of the same class; it is of three kinds, வல்லினவெதுகை, மெல்லின வெதுகை and இடையினவெதுகை. இனவெழுத்து, s. Relative letters --as the hard letters are to their respective nasals, or vice versa; also letters formed from the same sources which in the consonants run in couplets through the alphabet, and the long vowels to the short, and vice versa, இன மாயுள்ளவெழுத்துக்கள். பாவினம், s. The three classes of poems which partake of the nature of each of the four out of five classes of poems called, தாழிசை, துறைவிருத்தம். 1. Those that have some of the properties of வெண்பா are வெண்டாழிசை or வெள்ளொத் தாழிசை, வெண்டுறை and வெளிவிருத்தம். 2. Those of ஆசிரியம் are ஆசிரியத்தாழிசை, ஆசிரி யத்துறை and ஆசிரியவிருத்தம். 3. Those of கலிப்பா are கலித்தாழிசை, கலித்துறை and கலி விருத்தம். 4. Those of வஞ்சிப்பா are வஞ் சித்தாழிசை, வஞ்சித்துறை and வஞ்சிவிருத்தம். மூவினம், s. The three classes of consonants--as வல்லினம், the six hard sounding consonants--as க், ச், ட், த், ப், ற். 2. மெல்லினம், the six soft sounding consonants--as ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன். and 3. இடையினம், the six middle sounding conconsonants--as ய், ர், ல், வ், ழ், ள். 43)

The decalogue. தசதானம், s. Gifts to brahmans, made in the last extremity, as a passport to the other world; or by princes, and other great men, daily; by some also when a daughter is given in marriage, பத்துத்தானம். They are: 1. பசு, cow. 2. பூமி. land. 3. எள், sesamum. 4. பொன், gold. 5. நெய். ghee. 6. வஸ்திரம், cloth. 7. வெல்லம், coarse sugar, or jaggery. 8. நெல், paddy. 9. வெள்ளி, silver. 1. உப்பு. salt. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points or regions of the world. தசநாடி, s. The ten nerves or arteries of the system. See நாடி. தசப்பிராதுற்பவம், s. prov. more properly. தசபிராதுர்ப்பாவம்.] A poem in the ஆசிரியவிருத்தம் verse, celebrating the ten incarnations of Vishnu, உற்பவமாலை. தசப்பொருத்தம்--கலியாணப்பொருத் தம்--மணப்பொருத்தம். s. [in astrol.] Ten points in which there should be agreement in the horoscope of the bride and bridegroom. 1. நாள், in the lunar asterism or lunar day of birth. 2. கணம், in the three-fold division of the lunar asterisms, தேவர், இராட்சதர், and மனிதர், nine being ascribed to each, and a preference given where both are not in the same division. 3. மாகேந்திரம், in the rising sign, and the fourth, seventh or tenth. (See கேந்தி ரம்.) 4. திரிதீர்க்கம், in the asterism at the birth of the bridegroom which should be above that of the bride. 5. யோனி, in genital characteristics, ascribed to the lunar constellations. 6. இராசி, in the zodiacal signs, in which after the sixth of the bridegroom, his should be above the bride's. 7. அதிபதி, in the rulers of the signs which are the seven planets. 8. வசியம், in the respective zodiacal signs one with another. 9. வேதம், தாலிப்பொருத்தம் or மங்கிலியக்கயிறு, in the astrological circles, in no one of which should both be found. 1. இரச்சு, in lines drawn across the circles in any one of which, both persons should not be found. தசப்பொருத்தம்--செய்யுட்பொருத்தம், s. See செய்யுள். தசமம், s. [prop. தசமஸ்கந்தம்.] The tenth book of Bhagavata. தசமபாகம், s. The tenth part. (Colloq.) தசமி, s. The tenth phase of the moon, in the increase or decrease, பத்தாந் திதி. The name of an ancient king of Oude, the father of Rama, whose car bore him to any of the ten points, இராமன்பிதா; (ex தசம் et ரதம்.] தசவாயு, s. The ten vital airs supposed to be in the human body. தசாங்கம், s. The ten constituents of a kingdom. 2. The ten parts of a panegyric poem; [ex அங்கம்.] --Note. The constituents of a kingdom are: 1. மலை, mountain. 2. ஆறு, rivers. 3. நாடு, agricultural districts. 4. ஊர், towns 5. மாலை, garlands. 6. பரி, horse. 7. கரி, elephants. 8. முரசு, drums. 9. கொடி, flags or banners. 1. செங்கோல், scepter. தசாங்கத்தயல், s. A poem as தசாங் கப்பத்து. in ஆசிரியவிருத்தம் verse. தசாங்கப்பத்து, s. A poem in நேரி சைவெண்பா verse, celebrating the ten appendages of royalty, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். தசாமிசம்-தசாம்ஸம், s. Decimal fractions; [ex அமிசம்.] தசாவஸ்தை, s. Ten pains, symptoms of death. (See அவஸ்தை.) 2. [in lore poetry.] Ten kinds of விரகாவஸ்தை, which see. தசாவதாரம், s. The ten incarnations of Vishnu. See திருமாலவதாரம். தசேந்திரியம், s. The ten organs, viz.; five கன்மேந்திரியம் and five ஞானேந்திரியம். See இந்திரியம். 29)

pā (p. 305) s. Web or warp of a weaver, நெச வுபா. See பாவு. 2. Verse, poetry, poesy as பாட்டு, கவி, யாப்பு. &c. 3. A class of verse embracing five varieties, compared to the four castes, and formerly appropriated to them respectively, and one of a mixed form. 1. வெண்பா, the best, or sacerdotal verse, composed of வெண்சீர் or இயற்சீர் feet, or of both arranged in the வெண்டளை mode. See வெண்பா. also Bab. Gram. p. 79. 2. அகவற்பா or ஆசிரியப்பா, the princely or royal verse formed chiefly of இயற்சீர், and the connexion called ஆசிரி யத்தளை. See ஆசிரியம். 3. கலிப்பா, the mercantile or chetty verse, admitting the வெண்சீர் feet, also two of the இயற்சீர், and two வஞ்சிச்சீர். See கலிப்பா. 4. வஞ்சிப்பா, the agricultural, of வஞ்சிச்சீர் but admitting all the others. 5. மருட்பா, in which வெண்பா and ஆசிரியப்பா are intermingled. The stanza begins with two lines of வெண்பா, and the remainder, not limited, is of the ஆசிரியப்பா.-Note. The first four of the above have each three subdivisions, (called பாலினம்.) viz: தாழிசை, துறை and விருத்தம், to the names of which respectively, the general term, or a contraction, is prefixed, thus. I. வெண்டா ழிசை or வெள்ளொத்தாழிசை. 2. வெண்டுறை. 3. வெளிவிருத்தம். II. அகவற்றாழிசை or ஆசிரியத்தாழி சை. 2. அகவற்றுறை or ஆசிரியத்துறை. 3. அகவ ல்விருத்தம் or ஆசிரியவிருத்தம். III. கலித்தாழிசை. 2. கலித்துறை. 3. கலிவிருத்தம். IV. வஞ்சித்தாழி சை. 2.வஞ்சித்துறை. 3. வஞ்சிவிருத்தம். பாக்கட்ட, inf. To tie the broken threads of the warp. பாக்காநூல், s.
