Religious condition as prescribed especially for the Brahmans, including four degrees or orders, நிலை; viz.: 1. பிரமசாரி யாச்சிரமம், the state or condition of a bachelor, who, from the time of his investment with the sacred cord, is required to tend the sacred fires and to follow his studies under or in the presence of his preceptor. 2. கிரகஸ்தாச்சிரமம், the state of a house-holder, who, from his marriage, must strictly observe his religious duties, maintain the sacred fires, and liberally practise hospitality for the support of the other three orders. 3. வானப்பிரஸ்தாச் சிரமம், the state of an anchorite or recluse, who, with or without his wife, relinquishes domestic life, retires to the desert feeding on leaves, roots and fruits, or on the hospitality of the second order, and continues to perform his daily rites. 4. சன்னியாசியாச்சிரமம், the state of a religious mendicant who performs no rite whatever and lives only on alms, sometimes appearing in a state of nudity.
