āraṇiyam (p. 40) --ஆரண்ணியம், s. Forest, jungle, காடு. Wils. p. 118. ARAN'YA. (p.) 22)
காடு
kāṭu (p. 103) s. An uncultivated tract of land covered with forest-trees, thick, impenetrable brush wood, creeping plants and coarse, rank, reedy vegetation, a waste, a thicket, வனம். 2. Deserts, forest tracts, ஆரணியம். 3. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. 4. fig. Excessiveness much, closeness, &c., மிகுதி. 5. Wild, rough, uncultivated, unpolished, &c., used as a prefix--as காட்டுப்பசு. 6. A nominal termination to some words of verbal derivation, தொழிற்பெயர்விகுதி--as சாக் காடு. (c.) 7. (p.) A place, இடம். 8. A border, a limit, எல்லை. 9. A town, ஊர். 1. The second lunar asterism, பரணிநாள். 11. Chaff, straw, &c., செத்தை. காடுவாவீடுபோவென்கிற காலம்வந்தது. The time has arrived when the desert says, come, and the house says, go. இந்தவூருக்குக்காடுகொஞ்சம். This village has but little arable land. காடாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To be covered with jungle or wood. நிலங்காடாய்க்கிடக்கிறது. The ground is uncultivated. கடாய்ப்போக, inf. To become waste, to grow woody. காடாரம்பட்டு, s. A village situated in a wild tract of land near Vedarniam. காடாற்ற, inf. To perform the ceremony of quenching the fire where a corpse has been burnt, gathering the remains and taking them in a new pot to some water representing the Ganges, பாற்றெளிச்சடங்குசெய்ய. காடுகாட்ட, inf. To deceive, disappoint, lit. to show the place of burning the dead. காடுபடுதிரவியம், s. The productions of the desert, காட்டிலுண்டாகுந்திரவி யம். See under திரவியம். காடுபலியூட்ட, inf. To sacrifice to the sylvan nymphs before hunting, காட் டில்வாழுந்தேவர்களுக்குப்பலியிட. காடுவசாதி, s. [prov. prop. காடுவாழ் சாதி.] Savage tribe. காடுவசாதியாய்த்திரிய, inf. To be slovenly, sluttish, &c., to be careless, negligent of one's dress, &c., 2. To be vagrant, idle, &c., as a child for whom no one cares. காடுவாரி, s. [prov.] A rake, ஓர் கருவி. 2. One who scrapes up all he can, சேர்ப்பவன். 3. One who resorts to any kind of labor for support. காடுவாழ்த்து, s. A section of a war poem, extolling the jungle of the sylvan goddess, &c., where the battle occurred, வனதேவதையைவாழ்த்தும்பிரபந்தம். காடுவெட்டி, s. A wood-cutter, a savage, an untaught man. காட்டகத்தி, s. A shrub, வீழி, Cadaba Indica. காட்டத்தி, s. A species of the அத்தி tree, downy mountain ebony, Bauhinia tomentosa. (Mat. Ind.) காட்டழல், s. Jungle fire, kindled by the friction of trees, &c., காட்டுத்தீ. காட்டாள், s. A rustic, rural person, நாகரீகமில்லாதவன். காட்டான், s. The wild cow,காட் டுப்பசு. 2. [prov.] Stranger, பிறன். காட்டிலேபோக, inf. To be lost, to waste. காட்டுக்கடலை, s. A small tree or plant, ஓர்செடி. Rough melastoma, (Melastoma aspera) or Indian current bush. (Mat. Ind.) காட்டுக்கல், s. A rough hard kind of stone, ஓர்வைரமானகல். காட்டுக்கீரை, s. Different kinds of wild greens mixed together. காட்டுச்சீரகம், s. A wild cumin, purple fleabane, ஓர்பூண்டு, Vernonia anthelmintica. காட்டுச்சீரகவள்ளி, s. An esculent creeper--as காட்டுக்காய்வள்ளி. காட்டுச்சேவல், s. The jungle-cock, somewhat different from a woodcock. காட்டுத்தகரை, s. The wild தகரை plant. காட்டுத்தனம், s. Rusticity, uncultivated manners. காட்டுத்தாரா, s. A wild duck. See தாரா. காட்டுத்தாளி, s. A twining plant, Convolvulus muricatus. See தாளி. காட்டுத்தினை, s. Wild millet. காட்டுத்துத்தி, s. A kind of plant, Sida hirta. See துத்தி. காட்டுத்துவரை, s. A kind of துவ ரை plant, Glycine parviflora. காட்டுத்துளசி, s. A Wild species of துளசி; which see. காட்டுநாரத்்தை, s. A kind of நாரத் தை tree, பெருங்குருந்து. காட்டுநெல்லி, s. A kind of நெல்லி tree, Emblica officinalis. காட்டுப்பயிர், s. Vegetables that grow of themselves, தாமாகவிளையும்பயிர். காட்டுப்பருத்தி, s. Wild cotton of spontaneous growth. காட்டுப்பன்றி, s. A wild hog. காட்டுப்பாகல், s. A kind of பாகல் creeper. See பழுபாகல். காட்டுப்பிள்ளை, s. [metap.] A foundling. Besch.. காட்டுப்பீ, s. First black excrement of a new-born child, or calf, meconium. கட்டுப்புத்தி, s. Stupidity, senseless conduct, மூடபுத்தி. காட்டுப்புளிச்சை, s. Wild sour greens, காட்டுக்காய்ச்சுரை, Hibiscus cannabinus. காட்டுப்புறா, s. A dove, a turtledove, கபோதம். காட்டுப்பூனை, s. A species of wild cat, காட்டில்வாழும்பூனை. காட்டுமந்தாரை, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Bauhinia acuminata. L. காட்டுமரம், s. Any wild or useless tree, plant, &c. காட்டுமரி, s. A shrub, ஓர்பூடு. See உமரி. காட்டுமருக்கொழுந்து, s. A wild species of மருக்கொழுந்து, not fragrant. காட்டுமல்லிகை, s. A kind of wild jasmine, with red blossoms, வனமல்லிகை. 2. Narrow-leaved jasmine, Jasminum angustifolium. காட்டுமனுஷன், s. A wild man. 2. An uncivilized man. காட்டுமா, s. The wild mango, வன மாமரம், Carbera manghos. 2. Another wild, mango, Spondias mangifera. காட்டுமாமரம், s. The wild mango tree. காட்டுமாவிரை, s. The same as சாரப்பருப்பு. காட்டுமிருகம், s. A wild beast, வனமிருகம். 2. A wild horse, கானக்குதிரை. காட்டுமிருகாண்டி, s. [vul. காட்டு மிறாண்டி.] A clown, rustic, an awkward ill-bred person, முருடன். காட்டுமுருக்கு, s. A thorny wild tree, Erythrina Indica. See முருக்கு. காட்டுமுருங்கை, s. A senna-leaved shrub, வனமுருங்கை, Ormicarpum sennoides. (M. Dic.) காட்டுமுன்னை, s. A shrub, Croton repandum. (Rott.) See முன்னை. காட்டுவள்ளி, s. A plant with a bulbous root, Discorea bulbifera. See வள்ளி. காட்டுவாகை, s. A Mimosa tree. See வாகை. காட்டெருமை, s. A wild buffalo. காட்டெருமைப்பால், Its milk. 2. The milky juice of the Asclepias gigantea, or gigantic swallow-wort, எருக்கம்பா ல். 3. The same as கள்ளிப்பால், the milky juice of the Euphorbia tirucalli. 4. The same as கூகைநீறு, the flour of the root of the Curcuma angustifolia, அங்குசரோசனம். காட்டேரி--இரத்தக்காட்டேரி s. [prop. காடேறி.] A jungle imp, a sylvan nymph, a demoness. புகைக்காடு, s. A great smoke. குடிக்காடு, s. Many houses together, a village, town. பிணக்காடு, s. A field covered with corpses. பருத்திக்காடு, s. A cotton field. நெருப்புக்காடு, s. A large fire. புன்செய்க்காடு, s. High dry land. புல்லுக்காடு, s. Pasture land. வெள்ளக்காடு, s. A general flood. பெருங்காடு, s. Large jungle. பனங்காடு, s. A thick palmyra grove. இடுகாடு--சுடுகாடு s. A place for burying, burning the dead. சுடுகாட்டுக்குப்போனபிணந்திரும்புமோ. Cloth in general, சீலை. 5. One of the eight demigods, அஷ்டவசுக்களிலொரு வன். 6. Camphor, கர்ப்பூரம். 7. Soap, சவக் காரம். 8. A kind of rank in Ceylon wear three cloths one over another; the வேட்டி; சோமன். and துப்பட்டி. சோமகதி, s. Moon's daily motion. சோமசுந்தரன், s. Siva, சிவன். 2. A name of one of the Pandyan kings, ஓர் பாண்டியன். சோமசூரியாக்கினி, s. The sun, moon and fire. See முச்சுடர். சோமசேகரன்--சோமநாதன், s. Siva, as worshipped at Somnauth, சிவன். சோமமணல், s. Sand containing silver, வெள்ளிமணல். (R.) சோமமண்டலம், s. The region, orbit or disc of the man. சோமலிங்கம், s. The இலிங்கம் of Siva, as worshipped by Soma or the moon at சோமாரணியம். சோமலிங்கர், s. (Hon.) Siva as worshipped at சோமாரணியம். சோமவாரம், s. Monday. (Colloq.) சோமனுப்பு, s. Rock-salt, as இந்துப்பு. சோமன்சாம்பு--சோமன்மடி, s. [loc.] A piece containing several cloths or handkerchiefs for men. See சாம்பு. சோமன்சோடு, s. A cloth and shawl, the two forming a common dress; one twelve, the other six cubits. (c.) சோமாரணியம், s. The forest where the moon made puja to the Siva Linga, ஓர் சிவஸ்தலம்; [ex ஆரணியம்.] சோமேசுரன், s. Siva as worshipped by the moon, சிவன்; [ex ஈசுரன்.] பட்டுக்கரைச்சோமன், s. taṇṭakam (p. 222) s. The country of which Conjeveram is the capital, ஓர்தேசம்.--Note. It embraces what is called, தொண்டைமண் டலம், the peninsula south of the Godavery, in the time of Rama a forest. 2. A poem of threehundred stanzas of the வெண்பா versification, ஓர்பிரபந்தம்; also called, புணர்ச்சி மாலை. தண்டகாரணியம், s. makā (p. 338) adj. Great, high, exalted, dignified, noble, honorable, பெருமையான. 2. Immense, prodigious, stupendous, monstrous, extreme, அளவற்ற. 3. Superior, greater, paramount, superlative, உயர்ந்த. 4. Intense, மிகுந்த.--Note. This particle is sometimes repeated to express intensity, as மகாமகாப் பட்ட, the greatest. (Beschi.) Also sometimes contracted to மக, and மா, as மகராசா, மாசனங்கள்; [ex மகத்து.] அதுமகாஅரிது. It is very difficult. அதுமகாஅபூர்வம். It is very rare. மகராசன், s. A king, அரசன். 2. A rich or great or good man, சீமான். மகராசா, s. The king, the sovereign. மகராசி, s. A rich or benevolent lady; (lit.) a queen. மகரிஷி, s. An exalted Rishi, மகாரிஷி. மகாஅவதானி, s. A person who has excellent memory. மகாகருவம்--மகாகர்வம், s. Much arrogance. 2. Ten billions. மகாகற்பம், s. The great Kalpa, consisting of a vast period, probably the life time of Bramha, or 155,52,,, solar years, after which there will be a universal destruction.--Note. By analogy it would be only 1 கற்பம் of 4,32,, each or 43,2,, years; but கற்பம் is used very indefinitely. மகாகாசம்--மகாகாயம், s. The air, or ether at large; as distinguished from கடாகாசம், or air in a pot, the atmosphere, பெருவெளி. மகாகாலம், s. A great and long period of time, sometimes used for eternity, நெடுங்காலம். மகாகிதி--மகாக்ஷிதி, s. A certain number, one thousand trillions. மகாகோணி--மகாக்ஷோணி, s. Ten trillions. மகாகோரம், s. A division of hell, or Tartarus, நரகத்தினோரிடம். மகாசகை, s. A plant bearing an unfading flower, Gomphr&oe;na globosa, வாடா மல்லிகை. W. p. 652. MAHASAHA. மகாசங்கம், s. A hundred billions. 2. Head quarters, the chief place, the court, நீதிஸ்தலம். மகாஞானி, s. One who has attained to the highest degree of religion. மகாண்டு, s. The Hindu cycle of sixty years; [ex ஆண்டு.] மகாதலம், s. The sixth of the nether worlds. See கீழுலகம். 2. As மகாஸ்தலம். மகாதிசை, s. Aggregate influence of the planets, counted according to the natal asterism for the horoscope. மகாதீவு, s. The Maldive islands, said to have been, in ancient times, one island. மகாதேவன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Siva --as supreme, சிவன். 3. Epithet of god among various votaries, தெய்வம். 4. Assembling --as the chiefs of a nation. மகாநிகற்பம், s. An inconceivable length of time, probably one-thousand கற்பம். மகாநிதி, s. One of Kuvera's treasures. See நிதி. மகாநுபாவன், s. [com. மானபாவன்.] An illustrious person. 2. A magnanimous liberal man. W. p. 649. MAHANUB'HAVA. 3. One who has advanced to the highest degree in religion, மகாத்துமன். மகாபதுமம், s. A thousand billions, ஓரெண். 2. See நிதி. மகாபதுமன், s. One of the eight serpents that support the earth. See அஷ்ட நாகம், under நாகம். மகாபலன், s. A strong person, பலாஷ் டிகன். 2. Air, wind, காற்று. W. p. 65. MAHABALA. மகாபலி, s. [com. மாபலி, மாவலி.] A king dethroned by Vishnu in his Dwarf Avatar. See பலி. மகாபாதகம்--மகாபாவம், s. Crime of the highest magnitude. See பஞ்சமாபாத கம். மகாபாரதம், s. Mahab'harat, the great epic poem; so called from its having outweighed the four Vedas, when weighed by the Rishis in a scale. புகாபுண்ணியம், s. Great religious merit. மகாபுத்திமான், s. A very wise man. மகாபுருஷன், s. One who is distinguished for peculiar personal qualities. மகாபூதம், s. Elementary principles. மகாபூரி, s. Ten quintillions, ஓரெண். மகாபோகம், s. Great enjoyment, enjoyment of affluence and luxury. மகாப்பிரகாசசத்தி, s. Mica, as அப் பிரகம். மகாப்பிரதோஷம், s. The thirteenth evening from the new and full moon, a time in which the Saivas, expect particular benefits from their religious exercises. See பிரதோஷம். மகாப்பிரபு, s. A very great, illustrious, or holy person. மகாப்பிரபுக்கள்சபை, s. House of lords. (adopted.) மகாப்பிரளயம், s. The great deluge which destroys the universe at the end of each great Kalpa See பிரளயம். 2. (fig.) A number, ஓரெண். மகாமகம், s. [com. மாமகம்--colloq. மாமா ங்கம்.] The occurrence of the full moon in or about the asterism, மகம், with other astronomical incidents, which occur once in twelve years. Peculiar rites in honor of Siva, are then performed. The time is auspicious for bathing, especially at Combaconum. மகாமண்டபம், s. An open large court of temple, the fourth from the shrine. மகாமந்திரம், s. [com. மூலமந்திரம்.] An appropriate name of Deity. மகாமந்திரமூர்த்திகள், s. A class of souls of a superior order, consisting of seventy-five millions. Of these, thirty-five millions attain liberation when the work of creation is finished. மகாமந்திரி, s. The prime minister. மகாமாயி--மகாமாரி, s. [com. மகமாயி.] A name of Durga, துர்க்கை. மகாமாயை, s. Mother of the king of the Asuras, சூரபன்மன்தாய். 2. As மாமாயை. மகாமிருகம், s. The elephant, யானை. மகாமுத்திரை, s. One of the symbols of the Yoga system, யோகமுத்திரை. மகாமுனி--மகாரிஷி, s. A great Muni. 2. A name of Agastya, அகஸ்தியன். மகாமேரு--மகமேரு, s. The great Meru, or golden mountain, thought to be in the middle of the Central continent. மகாயக்கியம்--மகாயாகம், s. The first order of sacrifices. It is of five kinds; 1. பிரமம், or வேதமோதல், reading and learning Vedas; 2. தெய்வம், or ஓமம்வ ளர்த்தல், kindling a sacrificial fire; 3. பூதம், or பலியீதல், fragments of food left at an oblation; 4. பிதிர், or தர்ப்பணமுடித் தல், presenting water to the manes of persons deceased; 5. மானுடம், or இரப் போர்க்குணவீதல், gifts to beggars. மகாயுகம், s. The great age, the aggregate of the four ages, 4,32, years. மகாயோசனை, s. A large number. மகாரணியம், s. A very large forest, பெருங்காடு; [ex ஆரணியம்.] மகாரதன்--மாரதன், s. A charioteer commanding 11, chariots; any warrior of note, 11,--ந்தேருக்குத்தலைவன். மகாராசன்--மகாராசா, s. A great king, a monarch. W.p. 651. MAHARAJA. 2. An epithet of Kuvera. 3. One who possesses elephants, யானைகட்டிவாழ்பவன். மகாராட்டிரம், s. [Tamil மராடம்.] The original Maharatta country. See தேசம். 2. The Maharatta language. See பாஷை. மகாலட்சுமி, s. The great Lukshmi, goddess of felicity. மகாலயம், s. The world of Brahma, பிரமனுலகம். 2. A temple, கோயில். மகாலுத்தன்--மகாலோபி, s. A very great niggard. மகாலோகம்--மகலோகம், s. One of the seven upper worlds. See மேலுலகு. மகாவராகம், s. Vishnu in the hogincarnation, விஷ்ணு. மகாவற்புதம், s. A large number, ஓர் பேரெண்; [ex அற்புதம்.] மகாவாக்கியம், s. A mystic word in the Vedanta, a religious formule among the Saivas and others. மகாவிசுவம்--மகாவிஷீவம்--மகாவிடு வம், s. [in astron.] The moment of the sun's entering Aries, the vernal equinox, but varying several days from the European computation, மேடத்திற்சூரி யன்வருகை. W. p. 651. MAHAVISHUVA. மகாவியாகிருதி, s. The three mystical words, Bhur, Bhuva and Swer, the essential part with ஓம், of the Gayatri of the Brahmans, in their daily incantations, காயத்திரிமந்திரம். மகாவிந்தம், s. A number probably one thousand billions, ஓரெண். 2. A certain city, நளனுடையநகரம். 3. A residence of Vishnu, வைகுந்தம். மகாவிந்து, s. Mica or talc, as அப் பிரகம். மகாவிரதம்--மாவிரதம், s. One of the six approved or orthodox sects of the Saiva religion, சைவசமயத்தொன்று. மகாவிரதர், s. [sing. மகாவிரதி.] Professors of the above sect, சைவர்கள். மகாவெள்ளம், s. A great flood. 2. (fig.) A great number, ஓரெண். மகேசன்--மகேசுரன்--மகேசுவரன்-மகேச்சுரன்--மகேச்சுவரன், s. Siva--as Mahasuran, or obscurer of souls. See பஞ்ச கர்த்தாக்கள். His consort is called மகேசு வரி. மகேந்திரசாலம், s. [also மகதைசுவரியம்.] Great opulence. மகோததி, s. The ocean, the great sea, கடல்; [ex உததி, sea.] 2. [prov. also இரத் தினாகரம்.] The northern sea, from its connection with India; and the Ganges as being north of Ramisseram. மகோதயம், s. Final beatitude, emancipation from vitality, and absorption into the divine essence, முத்தியிற்கலப்பு. W. p. 653. MAHODAYA. 2. The rising of the sun and moon in conjunction, on a Monday, the sun being in Capricorn, in the month of January, and the moon in the twenty-second lunar asterism, in the seventh யோகம்--regarded as a most auspicious moment for sacred bathing; such is called மகோதயதீர்த்தம். Compare அத்தோதயம். மகோதரம், s. Dropsy of the belly, ascites, ஓர்நோய். 2. A large belly, பெரு வயிறு; [ex உதரம், belly.] மகோதரன், s.
