aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

āṉ (p. 44) s. A neat, cow or bull, பசுப் பொது. 2. A cow, பெண்பசு. 3. The she of the buffalo, or elk, பெண்மரை; [ex ஆ, cow, te ன், termination.] (p.) இ Sanscrit words beginning with ய, ர, ல--as யந்திரம், இயந்திரம், machine--ராகம், இராகம் harmony, melody--லங்கை, இலங்கை, Lanka. (p.) இக்கணம், s. Now, immediately, this moment. இக்குறி, s. [prov.] This time, this once, இம்முறை. 2. This mark, இவ்வடை யாளம். இக்குறிகேட்போன், s. One who has learnt once, now. இக்கூறு, s. This part, இப்பங்கு. 2. This manner, இப்பிரகாரம். இங்ஙனம், s. This place, இவ்வி டம், [adverbially.] here, hither, இங்கே. 2. Thus, so, in this manner, இப்படி. இத்துணை, s. So much, so many, இவ்வளவு. 2. This aid, இந்த உதவி. See துணை. இப்பசு, s. This cow. ஆனிலை--ஆன்கொட்டில், s. A cow-stall. ஆனுலகு, s. One of the seven superior worlds, சுவர்க்கம். ஆனேறு, s. A bull, எருது. ஆன்கன்று, s. A calf. ஆன்வல்லோர், s. Cow-herds. ஆன்றிரள், s. A crowd of herds. 20)

ikam (p. 45) s. Here, in this place, now, இவ்விடம். Wils. p. 134. IHA. 2. The present birth, இப்பிறவி. 3. This world, this state of enjoyment and suffering, இம்மை. (p.) இகபரம், s. This world and the next, earth and heaven, இம்மைமறுமை. இகபரசுகம், s. Earthly (temporal) and heavenly (etherial) prosperity. இகபரமறியாதவன், s. One who knows not the difference between right and wrong, one who knows nothing. இகலோகம், s. This world. 4)

imayam (p. 47) --இமையம், s. The Himalaya--as இமாசலம். Wils. p. 975. HIMAJA. 2. The gold mountain, பொன்மலை. இமயவல்லி, s. Parvati who was born on the Himalaya mountain, and said to be like an entwining creeper, பார் வதி. (p.) இமயவில்லி, s. Siva, சிவன். (p.) 10)

imai (p. 47) s. The eye-lid, கண்ணிமை. 2. A twinkle, twinkling of the eye, கண் ணிமைப்பொழுது. 3. (p.) A small or minute thing, a particle, அற்பம். 4. A bear, கரடி. 5. A peacock, மயில். கண்ணிமைகைந்நொடியளவேமாத்திரை. The time of a twinkling of the eye, or snapping of the finger is the duration of a மாத்திரை. இமைகொட்ட, inf. To twinkle, இமைக்க. இமைக்குழிவு, s. A hollow formed within the eye-lid, causing acute pain. இமையவர்--இமையோர், s. The gods who never sleep nor wink, வான வர். (p.) இமையவர்வேந்தன், s. Indra the king of the gods, இந்திரன். இமையாட, inf. To twinkle--as the eyes. இமையில், s. Garuda--the watchful bird that never shuts its eyes--the vehicle of Vishnu, கருடன். (p.) 18)

imai (p. 47) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To twinkle with the eyes, to wink, இமைகொட்ட. 2. (p.) To coruscate--as the stars, to glitter, emit light, ஒளிசெய்ய. இமையாநாட்டம் பெற்றிலமென்றார். (The terrestrial inhabitants) exclaimed we are not gifted with unwinking eyes (as the gods.) 19)

Of these three-hundredand-twenty make one மேல்முந்திரிகை, of which, three-hundred-and-twenty make a unit, ஓரெண். 2. An atom, a minute particle, நுண்மை. 3. (p.) Gold-color, பொன்மை. 4. Information, புலம். 5. (நாலடி.) The grain of a certain grass, மத்தங்காய்ப்புல்லரிசி. 23)

immeṉl (p. 47) . An imitative sound, இம்--as expressive of haste, அனுகர்ணவோசை. 2. A particle of quickness, விரைவுக்குறிப்பு. (p.) இம்மெனவந்துவிட்டான். He is come already. இம்மெனுமளவுநீங்காதென்செய்வானேங்கினானே. (The spectre) not being separated, from him, even for a moment, he was frightened, finding no means to be rid of it. (திருவிளை.) 24)
