āciriym (p. 36) --ஆசிரியப்பா, s. A kind of verse of a peculiar metre, being the second of the பா class and giving name to three species of similar character; viz.: தாழிசை, துறை, விருத்தம்; ஆசிரியம் being prefixed to each, அகவற்பா. See பா. (p.) ஆசிரியச்சீர், s. The kind of poetic foot peculiar to the ஆசிரியம் verse, also called இயற்சீர் or ஈரசைச்சீர். 62)

One disposed to maintain a course of conduct proper for a king. இயலுவமம், s. [in rhetoric.] A comparison of the properties of different things, பண்புவமை. இயற்சீர், s. The ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், verse--a metrical foot of four அசை. See சீர். இயற்சீர்வெண்டளை, s. Combination of two simple or ஆசிரியம் feet, or connection of an ஆசிரியம் foot, ending with a compound அசை, with another beginning with a simple one, or vice versa, மாமுன்னிரையும்விளமுன்னேருமொன்றிவருவது. இயற்சொல், s. A word in common use--in distinction from திரிசொல்-exclusively poetic usage--words understood both by the learned and unlearned. இயற்பெயர், s. Proper or arbitrary names, titles, terms of office, &c., இயல் பாயிடப்பட்டபெயர்; also names of things indicating a whole--as distinguished from parts. 2. Simple or original names --as distinguished from ஆகுபெயர் or derived names, செம்பொருளையுணர்த்தும்பெயர். இயற்றமிழ், s. Natural Tamil, whether common or poetic--as distinguished from இசைத்தமிழ், or Tamil adapted to music, and நாடகத்தமிழ் or dramatic Tamil, in both of which various changes occur in combination, construction, &c., முத்தமிழினொன்று. இயற்றளை, s. Connection of ஆசிரி யம் verse--as ஆசிரியத்தளை. See தளை. இயனூல், s. A system of grammatical rules. இயன்மொழிவாழ்த்து, s. A poem instructing children by the good disposition and behavior of their forefathers, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். 8)

kuṟḷ (p. 132) s. Shortness, conciseness, abridgment, சிறுமை. 2. An imp or goblin, பூதம். (நிக.) 3. A metrical line of two feet. இருசீரடி. 4. A distish, or couplet of short lines, the first of four, and the second of three feet of இயற்சீர் and வெண்சீர், குறள்வெண்பா. 5. A celebrated poetical work by திருவள்ளுவர், in three parts; viz.: அறத்துப்பால், பொருட்பால், காமத்துப்பால். 6. Shortness in stature, dwarfishness குள்ளம்; [ex குறு.] குறளடி, s. A line consisting of two metrical feet. குறளடிவஞ்சிப்பா, s. A kind of வஞ்சி verse, consisting of three or more lines of two metrical feet each, together with a detached foot and an அகவற்சுரித கம். குறள்வெண்பா--குறட்பா, s. A distich of two metrical lines. See குறள். குறள்வெண்செந்துறை, s. A verse consisting of two equal metrical lones of four or more feet each. குறட்டரழிசை--குறளினத்தாழிசை, s. A verse of two unequal metrical lines of five or more feet each. குறளன், s. A short person, a dwarf. குறளி, s. A dwarfish woman. 2. A short, wicked shrew. 3. A kind of devil. 4. (Rott.) tḷai (p. 229) s. A tie, fastening, bandage, கட்டு. 2. Fetter, shackles for the legs, கால்விலங்கு. (c.) 3. Enclosure of an unblown flower, மல ர்க்கட்டு. 4. Imprisonment, immuring, சிறை. 5. The metrical connection of the last syllable of any foot with the first of the succeeding, one of the six செய்யுளுறுப்பு, வரு ஞ்சீரின் முதலசை யொன்றியுமொன்றாமலுங்கூடிநிற்பது. --Note. The poetic தளை are of seven kinds embracing four classes. I. ஆசிரி யத்தளை. connexion of ஆசிரியம் verse of two species. 1. நேரொன்றாசிரீயத்தளை, combination of simple syllables in the ஆசிரியம் connexion, or of one simple ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. 2. நிரையொன்றாசிரியத்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or the connexion of one compound ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. II. வெண்டளை, connexion of வெண் பா verse, also of two species. 1. வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை, combination of genuine வெண்சீர் foot, or of one வெண்சீர் foot with another foot, biginning with a simple syllable 2. இயற்சீர்வெண்டளை, combination of simple, or ஆசிரியம் feet, or connexion of an ஆசிரியம் foot ending with a compound syllable with another foot beginning with a simple syllable, or vice versa. III. கலித்தளை, connexion of the கலிப்பா verse, being single, viz.; that of வெண்சீர் foot ending with a syllable with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. IV. வஞ்சித்தளை, connexion of வஞ்சி verse of two species. 1. ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. 2. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of a compound with a simple syllable, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another beginning with a simple syllable. For syllables and feet and their different species, see அசை and சீர். வளைபட்டகைமாதொடு மக்களெனுந் தளைபட்டழியத் தகுமோதகுமோ. Should I perish by being bound with my bracelet-adorned wife and children. தளைகழற்றிவிட, inf. To unloose or take off fetters. தளைத்தட்ட, inf. To fail or be defective, as a connection in verse, தளைதவற. தளைநார், s. [prov.] A foot brace for a tree-climber. தளைபட--தளைப்பட, inf. To be imprisoned, to be taken captive, சிறைப்பட. 2. To be bound, confined, restrained, கட்டுப்பட. தளைப்பூட்ட--தளைபோட, inf. To fetter, to shackle. தளைப்பொருத்தம், s. Harmonious combination of the தளை, in verse, தளையினிணக்கம். தளையவிழ, inf. To blossom as a flower, பூமலர. 2. To be unbound, to be unrestrained, கட்டவிழ. தளைவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To invest one with the office of உடையார். தளைவார், s. A thong of leather to hamper the feet of an animal when grazing. 2. As தளைநார். 53)

pā (p. 305) s. Web or warp of a weaver, நெச வுபா. See பாவு. 2. Verse, poetry, poesy as பாட்டு, கவி, யாப்பு. &c. 3. A class of verse embracing five varieties, compared to the four castes, and formerly appropriated to them respectively, and one of a mixed form. 1. வெண்பா, the best, or sacerdotal verse, composed of வெண்சீர் or இயற்சீர் feet, or of both arranged in the வெண்டளை mode. See வெண்பா. also Bab. Gram. p. 79. 2. அகவற்பா or ஆசிரியப்பா, the princely or royal verse formed chiefly of இயற்சீர், and the connexion called ஆசிரி யத்தளை. See ஆசிரியம். 3. கலிப்பா, the mercantile or chetty verse, admitting the வெண்சீர் feet, also two of the இயற்சீர், and two வஞ்சிச்சீர். See கலிப்பா. 4. வஞ்சிப்பா, the agricultural, of வஞ்சிச்சீர் but admitting all the others. 5. மருட்பா, in which வெண்பா and ஆசிரியப்பா are intermingled. The stanza begins with two lines of வெண்பா, and the remainder, not limited, is of the ஆசிரியப்பா.-Note. The first four of the above have each three subdivisions, (called பாலினம்.) viz: தாழிசை, துறை and விருத்தம், to the names of which respectively, the general term, or a contraction, is prefixed, thus. I. வெண்டா ழிசை or வெள்ளொத்தாழிசை. 2. வெண்டுறை. 3. வெளிவிருத்தம். II. அகவற்றாழிசை or ஆசிரியத்தாழி சை. 2. அகவற்றுறை or ஆசிரியத்துறை. 3. அகவ ல்விருத்தம் or ஆசிரியவிருத்தம். III. கலித்தாழிசை. 2. கலித்துறை. 3. கலிவிருத்தம். IV. வஞ்சித்தாழி சை. 2.வஞ்சித்துறை. 3. வஞ்சிவிருத்தம். பாக்கட்ட, inf. To tie the broken threads of the warp. பாக்காநூல், s.
