tāy (p. 234) s. Mother, அன்னை. 2. Dam, female parent of animals in general, விலங்கின் தாய். 3. [in combination.] A maternal aunt, &c. (See சிறியதாய், சிறியதாய்முறை and பெரியதாய்.) 4. Origin, that which is primitive, chief, or principal, முதன்மை. (c.) தாய், is also applied to five kinds of nurses. 1. பாராட்டுத்தாய். 2. ஊட்டுந்தாய். 3. முலைத்தாய். 4. கைத்தாய். 5. செவிலித்தாய். which see. Another five-fold classification is given of persons held in similar esteem with mothers. 1. அரசன்தேவி, king's wife. 2. குருவின்தேவி, wife of the guru. 3. அண் ணன்தேவி, elder brother's wife. 4. தன்தே வியைஈன்றவள், wife's mother. 5. தன்னைஈன் றவள், one's own mother. தாய்ப்பொன்னிலும்மாப்பொன்எடுக்கிறவன். He who would steal one-twentieth even of his mother's gold--a maxim on the thievishness of goldsmiths. தாய்முகங்காணாதபிள்ளை. A child early bereaved of its mother. தாய்முலைப்பாலிலும்உப்புப்பார்க்கிறவன். One who tries even his mother's milk to see if it is not salt; i. e. a distrustful, mistrustful, sceptical person. தாய்சொற்சிறந்தவாசகமில்லை. No word is like that of a mother. (Avv.) தாயினும்அன்பர்கர்த்தர். The Divine Being more loving than a mother. (Christ. usage.) தாய்க்குள்ளதுமகளுக்கு. As the mother, so the daughter. தாயாடு, s. A dam. தாயேடு--தாயோலை, s. [prov.] The original book, முதலேடு. தாயைக்கொல்லி, appel. n. A matricide. 2. A villain, a wretch, மாபாவி. 3. A plantain, or other tree that perishes after yielding, வாழைநண்டுசிப்பிவேய்முதலியன. தாய்கால்--தாய்க்கால்வழி, s. Maternal relatives--as தாய்வழி. தாய்க்கம்பு, s. A stick with which children, in a play, strike a smaller one, கோட்டி. தாய்க்கரும்பு, s. The parent sugarcane. தாய்க்கறையான்--தாய்ச்செல், s. A large white-ant. See கறையான். தாய்க்காணி, s. [prov.] Land of the first quality, முதற்றரமானகாணி. தாய்க்கிராமம், s. A principal village or hamlet. தாய்க்கிழங்கு, s. The principal esculent root. தாய்ச்சீட்டு, s. Original bond, draft, &c. தாய்ச்சீலை, s. (com. தாச்சீலை.) The fore-flap. தாய்ச்சோட்டை--தாய்ச்சோஷை, s. Longing of a child for its mother. தாய்தகப்பனில்லாதபிள்ளை, s. An orphan. தாய்மாமன், s. Maternal uncle. தாய்வழி--தாய்வழிச்சுற்றம், s. Relatives in the maternal line. தாய்வாழை, s. The original plantain tree. பெரியதாய், s. Mother's elder sister. 2. Elder paternal uncle's wife. பெரியதாய்முறை, s. Relationship of the wife's father's elder sisters, or of the husband's mother's elder brothers. பெற்றதாய்--நற்றாய், s. tīṟṟu (p. 244) கிறேன், தீற்றினேன், வேன், தீற்ற, v. a. [vul. தீத்து.] To feed with the hand, to insert by small mouthfuls, ஊட்ட. 2. To put on an outer coat of morter or clay, to clay, also to rub and polish, plaster, மெழு க. 3. To insert mortar or clay in hole or crevice, வெடிப்புமாற்ற. 4. To rub and smooth the folds of cloth after folding, சங் காட. 5. To glue or stiffen a strong cord, &c., with glue, &c, to prevent its untwisting, to smooth it, &c., கயிறுதீற்ற. 6. (R.) கருப்பைக்கு முட்டைக்குங் கல்லுட்டேரைக்கும்-வி ருப்பட்டமுதளிக்குமெய்யன்-உருப்பெற்றால்-ஊட்டிவ ளர்க்கானோ ஓகெடுவாயன்னாய், வாட்டமுனக்கேன்மகிழ். Since God takes care of the f&oe;tus in the womb, the chicken in the egg, the frog in the stone, will be not provide? Why art thou troubled, O mother!--rejoyice A stanza ascribed to a sister of the author of the Cural, as uttered when he was born. பாம்பின்வாய்த்தேரைபோல். Like a toad in the mouth of a snake; having no way of excape. ஆயிரம்பாம்புக்குள்ளொருதேரைபோல. As a frog among a thousand serpents. தேரைக்காலும்தேரைக்கையும். A slender leg and arm. தேரைக்குண்டி, s. Flat buttocks. தேரைபாய, inf. To become emsciated about the buttocks, limbs, &c. 2. To leap, as a frog, on a pregnant woman, supposed to cause leanness, or emaciation in the child. தேரைமோக்க, inf. [prov. தேரைகுடிக்க.] To be blighted as some cocoa-nuts. தேரைமோந்ததேங்காய்--தேரைமுகர்ந்த காய், s. An imperfect cocoa-nut. தேரைவிழுந்தபிள்ளை, s. An emaciated child, attributed to தேரைபாய்தல், (c.) 12)

piẕai (p. 318) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To live, to survive an evil, as danger of death, &c., to outlive, to escape, to survive another, மோசத்திற்குவிலக. 2. To get a livelihood, to live, to subsist, சீவனம் பண்ண. 3. To recover from swooning, sickness, &c., to be restored to life--as one dead, உய்ய.--Note. See, under பிழை, s., the same verb with a different meaning. (c.) கணவனைப்பிழைத்தவன். A woman that has survived her husband. (p.) பிழைகாயம், s. A wound not mortal. பிழைக்கப்பார்த்தல், v. noun. Seeking one's living. பிழைப்பு, v. noun. Subsistence, maintenance, living, livelihood, sustenance, சீவனம். 2. Restoration, recovery, or escape from threatening death, உயிர்க்கை. (c.) 3. [ex பிழை, to err.] Mistake, failure, error, miscarriage, abortion, தவறுதல். பிழைப்புக்காட்ட, inf. To provide means of subsistence--as employment, &c. பிழைப்புத்தழைப்பு, v. noun. Income, living, livelihood. பிழைப்புத்தேட--பிழைப்புப்பார்்க்க, inf. To look for employment, to seek for a livelihood. பிழைப்பூட்ட, inf. To support, sustain, maintain, காப்பாற்ற. 2. To restore from threatening death, re-animate, restore life, உயிர்ப்பிக்க. See ஊட்டு. v. 3)

pukṭṭu (p. 321) கிறேன், புகட்டினேன், வேன், புகட்ட, v. a. To put in, to infuse, to instil, to pour into a beast's or childs' mouth, ஊட்ட [vul. போட்டு.] 2. To strike in, beat in, as rain, உட்செலுத்த. 3. To impress on the mind, மனதிற்பதிக்க. 4. To communicate or instil good or bad principles, அறிவுறுத்த. குழந்தைக்குப்பால்புகட்டினாள். She poured the milk into the child's mouth. 8)

vḷr (p. 379) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To cherish, to foster, to bring up; to attend to while growing, whether a child, an animal or a vegetable, பரிபாலிக்க. 2. To cultivate, to rear, to train, ஆக்க. 3. To place or lay down, as an infant, to sleep, as வளர்த்து. வளர்த்தகடாகையிலேபாய்ந்ததுபோலே........The house bred ram butted the [fostering] hand which nourished it. என்னோடேசண்டைவளர்க்கிறான். He nurses a quarrel with me. தீவளர்க்கிறார்கள். They are keeping the fire burning. ஏன்வளர்த்துப்பேசுகிறாய். Why do you lengthen the discourse? வளர்கடா--வளர்கிடாய், s. [vul. வள கடா.] A ram reared in the house. வளர்த்ததகப்பன், s. A foster-father. வளர்த்தபிள்ளை, s. A foster-child. வளர்த்தாள், appel. n. A wet nurse; foster-mother, ஊட்டுந்தாய். 2. A female servant that brings up a child, கைத்தாய். பெற்றாட்கும்வளர்த்தாட்கும்வித்தியாசமில்லையா.... Is there not a difference between an own mother and a foster-mother? வளர்மயிர், s.
