oṉṟu (p. 84) s. One (the numeral), ஒன் றென்னுமெண். 2. One thing, அஃறிணையொரு மை. 3. Union, coalescence, ஐக்கம். 4. In construction, it means either, or--as ஒன் றுதீவினையைவிடு, ஒன்றுஅதின்பயனைநுகர், either abandon your evil deeds, or take the consequences. ஒன்றத்தனைகொடுத்தால்நானிரண்டத்தனைகொடுப் பேன். If he has given once as much, I will give twice. ஒன்றாறுகிறானில்லை. He so wonders that he knows not when to cease extolling. 2. His sorrow, regret, &c. is unremitted. ஒன்றிலிருந்தொன்றிலேபாய்தல். Talking loosely, incoherently, jumping from one thing to another. ஒன்றினுளொன்று. One among another, reciprocally, mutually. ஒன்றுகேள். Listen to a word of advice, hear what I have to say. ஒன்றுக்குமசையான். He is moved by nothing. ஒன்றுமொன்றுமிரண்டென்றுதெரியாதவன். A person so ignorant that he cannot tell that one and one make two. ஒன்றுவிட்டொருநாள். Every other day, alternate days. ஒன்றேயொன்று. One only. ஒன்றோஅவனாலேகேடு. Have I sustained but one loss by him? நான்சொன்னதொன்று, அவன்செய்ததொன்று. I told him one thing and he did another. மனமொன்றுவாக்கொன்று. His profession is one thing and intention another. ஒன்றரை, s. One and a half. ஒன்றன்கூட்டம், s. A collection of similar things, ஒருபொருட்கூட்டம். (p.) ஒன்றன்பால், s. [in grammar.] Neuter singular of the irrational class, அஃறி ணையொருமைப்பால். ஒன்றாய், adv. Together, altogether, ஒன்றாக. ஒன்றாலொன்றும். By any means, யாதொன்றினாலும். ஒன்றாலொன்றுங்குறையில்லை. There is no lack at all--commonly applied to provisions, the country produce, &c. ஒன்றி, s. [vul. ஒண்டி.] One, alone, solitary, lonely (spoken of persons), தனி. ஒன்றிக்காரன்--ஒன்றியாள், s. A bachelor, a widower, a single or lonely person, தனியாள். ஒன்றினமுடித்தறன்னினமுடித்தல், v. noun. [in grammar.] Forming a rule or definition so as to include others, ஒருத்தி. ஒன்றுக்கு. For one thing, viz.: to make water--the common expression among school boys when asking to go out for this purpose. ஒன்றுக்கிருக்க, inf. To sit or squat down or go for one thing, viz.: to make water, நீர்விட. ஒன்றுக்குப்போக, inf. To make water. ஒன்றுக்கொன்று. To or for each other. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுசரி. They are equal, alike, &c. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுபேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். [vul.] They have called each other by hard names. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுவித்தியாசம். Different one from another. ஒன்றுபட, inf. To become reconciled, ஒப்புரவாக. 2. To be united, to coalesce, பொருந்த. ஒன்றுபடுத்த, inf. To bring about a union or acquaintance between persons, ஒருமைப்படுத்த. 2. To reconcile, ஒப் புரவாக்க. ஒன்றுபாதி, s. [prov.] A moiety, a half-commonly of land, அரை. 2. Midnight, நடுச்சாமம். அவன்தன்சரக்கையொன்றுபாதியாகவிற்றுப்போட் டான். He sold his goods at half price. ஒன்றுமண்டடி--ஒன்றுமன்றடி, s. Concord, union, harmony, intimate familiarity. 2. Confusion, want of order or system. ஒன்றுமறியாதவன், s. One who knows nothing. ஒன்றுமறியாதவனுமில்லைஎல்லாமறிந்தவனுமில்லை. None is so ignorant as to know nothing --none so wise as to know every thing. ஒன்றுமற்றவன், s. A useless person, உபயோகமற்றவன். 2. A very poor person, தரித்திரன். ஒன்றுமில்லாமை--ஒன்றுமின்மை, s. Utter destitution, the relinquishing of every thing--as an act of devotion. (அறநெறி.) ஒன்றேகால், s. One and a quarter. ஒன்றொழிபொதுச்சொல், s. [in grammar.] Terms common to both genders, one only of which is understood, the other being excluded by the connexion, இருதிணையாண்பெண்ணுளொன்றனை யொழிக்கும்பொதுச்சொல்--as ஆயிரமக்கள்பொரு தார், a thousand persons fought; i. e. men. 33)

oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. See தளை. ஒன்றார்--ஒன்னாதார்--ஒன்னார், s. Foes, unfriendly persons. (p.) ஒன்றுகுடி, s. A family or person living in another's house, garden, &c. See ஒட்டுக்குடி and ஒதுக்குக்குடி. ஒன்றுகூட்டு, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

orukku (p. 83) கிறேன், ஒருக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒருக்க, v. a. To bring to one point, unite, combine, ஒன்றாக்க. 2. To concentrate the powers of the mind as on the divine being, ஒருநினைவுகொள்ள. 2. To kill, to destroy, அழிக்க. (பாரதி.) 13)

kumai (p. 123) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To be over-boiled or boiled soft, or to a mash-as greens, &c., குழையவேவ. 2. To be in a state of confusion, மயங்க. 3. To faint or droop--as one in a swoon, சோர. 4. [local.] To be hot, sultry, வெப்பத்தாற்புழுங்க. 5. [fig. in poetry.] To be destroyed, அழிய. எல்லாம் ஒன்றாய்க் குமைந்துபோய்க்கிடக்கின்றன. The property of several persons, ancestors, &c., has all settled upon one. 2. The things are all in confusion. 3. Several things are mixed together. குமைந்துகுமைந்துமெலிந்துபோகிறான். He faints every time he is taken up. கண்குமைகிறது. The eye-lids close together (from a predominance of heat in the system). குமைந்துபோக, inf. To be boiled into a mash. 21)

tṉi (p. 231) [impers. used adverbially and as an adjective.] Alone, solitary, sequestered, secluded, distinct, separate, detached, insulated, தனிமையான. 2. Sole, single, only, individual, ஒன்றான. 3. Unique, matchless. unparalled, ஒப்பில்லாத. 4. Unlike, without an equal, one of the pair--the other being wanting, ஒற்றையான. 5. Independent, absolute, entire, சுவாதீனமான. 6. Pure, simple, unadulterated, unalloyed, genuine, கலப் பில்லாத. 7. Deserted, forsaken, forlorn, helpless, ஏதுமற்ற. --Note. க், ச், த், ப், are doubled after தனி. (c.) தனிக்கடவுள், s. Absolute deity, the matchless deity. தனிக்காட்டுராசா, s. A sole sovereign in a jungle. (c.) தனிக்காப்பு, s. An invocation, comprized in a single verse. தனிக்குடி, s. (also ஒன்றிக்குடி.) A solitary family. 2. One family of a caste, living among other castes. 3. Keeping house separately, as distinguished from living under the paternal roof. தனிக்குடை, s. The umbrella of an autocrat; (fig.) absolute sovereignty, தனியாசாட்சி. தனிக்குடைநிழற்ற. To spread the imperial umbrella, to govern. (p.) தனிக்குறில்--தனிக்குற்றெழுத்து, s. A single short consonant. தனிக்கோலான், s. He whose government is incomparable, the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. An independent sovereign. (p.) தனிச்சமையல், v. noun. Cooking for a single person, for one's self only, &c., தனிச்செய்கை, v. noun. Cultivating land alone, not jointly with others. தனிச்சொல், s. (Bab. Gram. p. 8.) A detached foot in வெண்பா and other verse, between two lines, தனிச்சீர். 2. A single or uncombined word. தனித்தனியே, adv. Individually, separately, each one singly, each alone. --Note. The ஏ is often added whether தனி be repeated or not--as தனியே. தனித்தாட்டன், s. [prov.] A large monkey that keeps distinct from, or goes before, the drove. தனித்தியலிடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. A specific name, including many individuals, or some varieties. தனித்தேட்டம், s. Amassing wealth alone, without the burden of a family. தனிநிலை, s. Solitariness, தனி்துநிற் கை. 2. (in gram.] The letter ஃ, ஆய்த வெழுத்்து. தனிப்பட, inf. [adverbially.] To be alone, to be left alone, to be forseken. 2. To be solitary. 3. To be kept alone as witnesses and prisoners, or apart, detached--as persons, or animals. (c.) தனிப்படச்சொல்லுகிறேன். I will tell you in secret. தனிப்பட்டு, s. A single or distinct fold, plait, strand or string, one out of several folds of a necklace. 2. (c.) Silk only, all silk. தனிப்பயணம், s. Travelling alone, as தனிவழி. தனிப்பன்றி, s. A wild boar alone, as more ferocious and dangerous than others. தனிப்பாடு, v. noun. Loneliness, solitude. தனிமை. 2. Bearing the whole labor, responsibility, &c., alone, முழப் பொறுப்பு. (c.) தனிப்பாட்டு, s. A single verse unconnected with a series, விடுபாட்டு. தனிப்பால், s. Pure, unadulterated milk. (c.) தனிப்புரக்க, inf. To reign alone, to be an autocrat, தனியரசாள. (p.) தனிப்புறம், s. A solitary place, or state. (c.) தனிப்பூடு, s. An onion, or other bulbous root not divided. தனிப்பெற, inf. [adverbially.] To be alone, to be placed alone, apart, distinct, insulated. (c.) தனிப்பெறஎடுத்துக்கொண்டான். He took the whole to himself. தனிப்போர், s. A single combat. 2. [in card playing.] One of the players, winning all the cards, கடிதமாடுவோரிலொரு வர்வெல்லுகை. 3. [in trade.] An individual monopolizing all the profits, தன்வசமாக்குகை. தனிமுதல், s. Trading alone, with one's own capital. 2. (p.) The matchless and only God, absolute deity, கட வுள். தனிமொழி, s. A simple uncompounded word. தனியரசாட்சி, s. Universal sovereignty. தனியன்--தனியான், s. A single man or woman, one unmarried, living alone; a wild beast detached from the herd, and thus rendered ferocious, ஒன்றி. 2. A solitary animal tree, fruit, &c., த னித்தது. 3. As தனிப்பாட்டு. தனியிருக்க--தனியேயிருக்க, inf. To be alone, to be alone at home. தனியுவமம், s. Using a word in a figurative sense, as கன்னெஞ்சு, a stony heart. தனியெழுத்து, s. Single letters, in distinction from சுட்டெழுத்து, compound letters. தனிவழி, s. A lonely way. 2. Travelling alone. தனிவீடு, s. A solitary house. 2. A house with one square only. tḷai (p. 229) s. A tie, fastening, bandage, கட்டு. 2. Fetter, shackles for the legs, கால்விலங்கு. (c.) 3. Enclosure of an unblown flower, மல ர்க்கட்டு. 4. Imprisonment, immuring, சிறை. 5. The காற்கொலுசு, ankle-rings. 6. A foot trinket, காற்சிலம்பு. 7. Men's locks of hair, ஆண்மயிர். 8. [prov.] A partition, division, in rice fields. வயலின்பிரிவு. (c.) 9. A tie, a bond, (met.) a bond of union, பந்துகட்டு. 1. [prov.] The office of an உடையார். 11. The metrical connection of the last syllable of any foot with the first of the succeeding, one of the six செய்யுளுறுப்பு, வரு ஞ்சீரின் முதலசை யொன்றியுமொன்றாமலுங்கூடிநிற்பது. --Note. The poetic தளை are of seven kinds embracing four classes. I. ஆசிரி யத்தளை. connexion of ஆசிரியம் verse of two species. 1. நேரொன்றாசிரீயத்தளை, combination of simple syllables in the ஆசிரியம் connexion, or of one simple ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. 2. நிரையொன்றாசிரியத்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or the connexion of one compound ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. II. வெண்டளை, connexion of வெண் பா verse, also of two species. 1. வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை, combination of genuine வெண்சீர் foot, or of one வெண்சீர் foot with another foot, biginning with a simple syllable 2. இயற்சீர்வெண்டளை, combination of simple, or ஆசிரியம் feet, or connexion of an ஆசிரியம் foot ending with a compound syllable with another foot beginning with a simple syllable, or vice versa. III. கலித்தளை, connexion of the கலிப்பா verse, being single, viz.; that of வெண்சீர் foot ending with a syllable with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. IV. வஞ்சித்தளை, connexion of வஞ்சி verse of two species. 1. ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. 2. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of a compound with a simple syllable, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another beginning with a simple syllable. For syllables and feet and their different species, see அசை and சீர். வளைபட்டகைமாதொடு மக்களெனுந் தளைபட்டழியத் தகுமோதகுமோ. Should I perish by being bound with my bracelet-adorned wife and children. தளைகழற்றிவிட, inf. To unloose or take off fetters. தளைத்தட்ட, inf. To fail or be defective, as a connection in verse, தளைதவற. தளைநார், s. [prov.] A foot brace for a tree-climber. தளைபட--தளைப்பட, inf. To be imprisoned, to be taken captive, சிறைப்பட. 2. To be bound, confined, restrained, கட்டுப்பட. தளைப்பூட்ட--தளைபோட, inf. To fetter, to shackle. தளைப்பொருத்தம், s. Harmonious combination of the தளை, in verse, தளையினிணக்கம். தளையவிழ, inf. To blossom as a flower, பூமலர. 2. To be unbound, to be unrestrained, கட்டவிழ. தளைவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To invest one with the office of உடையார். தளைவார், s. A thong of leather to hamper the feet of an animal when grazing. 2. As தளைநார். 53)

pli (p. 301) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To take effect, to yield results or fruit, to succeed, வாய்க்க. 2. To produce good or evil, as trade, &c., as இலபிக்க; [ex பலம்.] ஒன்றாயிரமாய்ப்பலிக்கும். One will produce a thousand. மருந்துபலிக்கவில்லை. The medicine did not take effect. பலித்தபயிர், s. A thriving crop. பலித்தல்--பலிப்பு, v. noun. Advantage; good or bad result. 2. Profit, success, பயன். 3. Result of good or evil deeds as experienced in this life, நன்மைதீ மைகளின்பலிப்பு.-- Note. The compounds in common use are: கற்புப்பலித்தல், the taking effect of the curse of a chaste woman violated; சாபம்பலித்தல், taking effect of the curse of a devotee; சூனியம் பலித்தல், witchcraft taking effect; நியாயம் பலித்தல், arguments approving and convincing. 57) *

poḷi (p. 337) s. A hoe-full, or shovel-full of earth, a piece of turf, பொளிமண். 2. A hole made with a chisel, a mortise, உளிப்பதிவு. 3. [prov.] A bank in a rice-field, &c., வரம்பு. பொளியை வெட்டி இரண்டுதளையையும் ஒன்றாக்கி னான். He removed the bank between the fields and made them one. 71)
