The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s. An ascetic, முனிவன். (p.) ஐம்புலாதி, s. [prov.] Anxiousness, being full of cares. ஐம்பூதம், s. The five elements, பஞ்சபூதம். ஐம்பொறி, s. The five organs of sense, பஞ்சேந்திரியம். ஐம்பொறிநுகர்ச்சி, s. Enjoyment of the senses, பொறிபுலனைக்கொள்ளுகை. ஐம்பொன், s. The five kinds of metals, பஞ்சலோகம். ஐயாயிரம், s. Five-thousand, ஐந்தா யிரம். ஐயைந்து, s. Five times five. ஐவகைப்பொழுது, s. Five divisions of the day, சிறுபொழுது, viz.: மாலை, யாமம், வைகறை, எற்பாடு, நண்பகல். ஐவகைப்பொன், s. See பஞ்ச லோகம். ஐவகைமயிர்முடி, s. The five methods of dressing women's hair. A bear--so called from the prehensile power of his four feet and mouth, கரடி. (p.) ஐவிரலி, s. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. ōmm (p. 84) s. Sison or Bishop's weed, a species of cumin, the seed of which is distilled for medicinal use, also given in decoction to children, அசமதாகம், Sison ammi, L. ஓமப்பொடி, s. A medicinal powder made of sison. 2. A cake made of it. 97) *
ஓமம்
ōmam (p. 84) s. A burnt offering, the casting of clarified butter, the nine kinds of grain, &c., into the sacred fire, accompanied with prayers, &c. It forms an essential part of the marriage ceremony and is performed at the அந்தியேட்டி, a chief ceremony for deceased persons and in the worship of the temple, &c. In poetry the burnt sacrifice of animals, யாகம். Wils. p. 98. HOMA. ஓமகுண்டம், s. A hole made in the ground for sacrificial fire. Wils. p. 78. HOMAKUNDA. ஓமசாந்தி, s. Mitigating, propitiating by fire, அக்கினிசாந்தி. 2. Burnt offering at a marriage to propitiate the god of fire who is thus invoked as a witness of the transaction, விவாகத்திற்செய்யுமோம சாந்தி. 3. Any additional sacrifice performed to obtain pardon for having omitted certain ceremonies in a sacrifice, யாகசாந்தி. ஓமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To perform a burnt sacrifice, அக்கினிகாரியஞ்செய்ய. ஓமதிரவியம், s. The requisites for a sacrifice including the firewood, &c., யாகஉபகரணம். ஓமப்பொடி, s. The ashes of the ஓமம்--deemed sacred, and used for smearing the person, யாகநீறு. ஓமமண்டபம், s. A sacrificial hall, யாகசாலை. ஓமம்வளர்க்க, inf. To kindle and feed the sacrificial fire which should never be suffered to go out; to attend to this is the special duty of the student or பிரமசாரி. ஓமவிறகு, s. Sacrificial fire-wood of different kinds. See சமித்து. ஓமாக்கினி, s. Sacrificial fire, ஓ மத்தழல். Wils. p. 18. HOMAGNI. ஓமல், s. [vul.] A rumor, report, spreading as a rumor, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. ஊருக்கோமல்வீட்டுக்குவயிற்றெரிச்சல். He has the name of being a rich man, but in his house there is want and misery. ஓமற்படுதல்--ஊரோமல், v. noun. Spreading as a rumor, being rumored. உன்னாலிந்தாகசியம்ஊரோமலாச்சுதே. The secret has been bruited throughout the town by you. 98)

kuṇṭam (p. 118) s. A small pot, குடுவை. 2. A large pot, பானை. 3. A pool, well, &c., especially consecrated to some sacred purpose or person, குளம். 4. A deep hole, a pit, குழி. 5. A hole in the ground for receiving or preserving sacrificial fire, &c., ஓமமுதலியகுண்டம். Wils. p. 228. KUN'D'A. குண்டமண்டலம், s. The mystic diagram about the sacred hole in the கிரியா வுத்திரி instruction, &c. குண்டம்பாய--குண்டம்மிதிக்க, inf. To walk on fire--as persons under the influence of religious frenzy, in fulfilment of a vow, &c. யாககுண்டம்--வேள்விக்குண்டம், s. A hole for sacrificial fire. குண்டவண்டன், s. [prov.] A short, thick person. குண்டோதரன், s. A short Bhuta with a large round belly in the army of Siva, பூதகணத்திலொன்று. 2. [in burlesque.] A great-bellied glutton, பெருந்தீனிக்காரன். குண்டோதரன்போலிருக்க, inf. To be full-fed, stuffed up; to have one's lap full. 33)
