eḷ (p. 75) s. [vul. எள்ளு.] One of the nine kinds of grain, sesamum, from the seeds of which an oil is extracted, used for food, bathing, &c., திலம். Sesamum orientale. See தானியம் and எண்ணெய்.-Note. The ள் of this word becomes ட் and ண் by permutation. எள்ளத்தனையைமலையத்தனையாக்க. To make a mountain of a sesamum seed, to exaggerate. எள்ளளவு--எள்ளுப்போலே. As much as a sesamum seed, a very little. எள்ளளவுநம்பிக்கையுமில்லை. Utterly unworthy of confidence. 2. Destitute of belief, confidence, &c. எள்ளுக்குளெண்ணெய்போலெங்குநிறைந்தகடவுள். God who pervades the universe, as oil the sesamum seed. எட்கடை--எட்கிடை--எட்பிரமா ணம். As much as a sesamum seed, எள்ள ளவு. 2. A standard of measure in regard to space, ஓரளவு--eight எள் make a நெல் or grain or rice; eight grains of rice one அங்குலம், an inch, &c. எட்பாகு, s. A kind of porridge made of sesamum seed, எள்ளுப்பாகு. எண்ணெய், s. [impr. எண்ணை.] Rape-seed oil. 2. (fig.) A common name for oils of all kinds. எண்ணெயூற்ற, inf. To express oil, எண்ணெய்வடிக்க. எண்ணெயெரிக்க, inf. To prepare medicinal oils by burning, in which the drugs are rolled up in a bit of cloth which is dipped in oil and set on fire; the oil which drops from it is used as a medicine, தைலமெரிக்க. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பு, s. The color of rape-seed oil, or dark brown. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பி, s. A female whose skin resembles rape-seed oil, not so much in regard to its color as its soft and beautiful appearance. எண்ணெய்க்காப்பு, s. Oil for bathing an idol, எண்ணெயபிஷேகம். எண்ணெய்க்காரன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. A hone prepared for use by oiling. எண்ணெய்ச்சாயம், s. Oil paint, எண்ணெயாற்செய்யப்பட்டசாயம். 2. Dyeing a cloth red after soaking it in margosa oil, எண்ணெயிற்றோய்த்தேற்றப்பட்டசாயம். எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு, s. Indigestion produced by eating oily food, எண்ணெய் வயிற்றிற்றங்குகை. 2. A clotted state of the hair from the oil not being well washed out, எண்ணெய்மயிரில்விடாமை. 3. A bad smell--as of oil, எண்ணெய்நாற்றம். எண்ணெய்ச்சீலை, s. Cloth dipped in oil to be applied to wounds, எண் ணெய்த்துணி. 2. A piece of cloth put round the waist before bathing, எண் ணெய்க்கோவணம். எண்ணெய்தேய்க்க, inf. To rub oil. எண்ணெய்தொட்டுப்பொட்டுவைக் க. inf. To dip the finger in oil before bathing dropping seven drops on the floor for the சிரஞ்சிவியர், who are supposed in consequence to grant long life. எண்ணெய்பிறக்க, inf. To form as oil by boiling. எண்ணெய்பூச, inf. To oil, anoint, besmear with oil. எண்ணெய்பொருத்த, inf. To put medical oil on the head or other parts of the body, and to rub it in, மருந்தெண் ணெய்பூச. எண்ணெய்ப்பற்று, s. Adherence of oil or unctuous matter to the bowels, hair, clothes, &c., oil, greasy substance in food--as in fish or on the dress from cooking, எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. எண்ணெய்வழுக்கு, v. noun. Being greasy--as oil, &c., எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. 2. Shining, sleek, glossy, bright, எண்ணெய் மினுக்கு. எண்ணெய்வாணிகன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். ஆமணக்கெண்ணெய், s. Castor oil. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil for the head. விளக்கெண்ணெய், s. Lamp oil. புன்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from புன்கம் seeds. சூட்டெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from the residuum of the margosa berry. மருத்தெண்ணெய், s. Medical oil. குருந்தெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from குருந்தம் seeds. இலுப்பெண்ணெய், s. The இலுப் பை oil. வேப்பெண்ணெய், s. Margosa oil. தேங்காயெண்ணெய், s. Cocoanut oil. வடியெண்ணெய், s. Clarified medical oil. கொதியெண்ணெய், s. A species of boiled oil, used for medicinal purposes. புளியெண்ணெய், s. A medical oil. புன்னையெண்ணெய், s. The oil extracted from புன்னை seeds. நல்லெண்ணெய், s. Sesamum oil used for the hair and the skin, &c. மரவெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from wood. தெளிவெண்ணெய், s. Clear margosa oil poured off from the sediment. ஊற்றெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted by pressing or pounding the seeds. மீனெண்ணெய், s. Fish oil. எள்ளுண்டை--எள்ளுருண்டை, s. A pastry made into balls, said to be a very strengthening food, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. எள்ளுந்தண்ணீருமிறைக்க, inf. To pour water to the manes of deceased persons on sesamum seeds and sacrificial grass held in the hand. எள்ளோரை, s. Sesamum and rice boiled and mixed with ghee--one of the சித்திரான்னம். காட்டெள்ளு, s. A kind of sesamum found in uncultivated places. காரெள்ளு, s. The common எள். 2. cāṇ (p. 174) s. A span of twelve fingers' breadth, or form the end of the thumb to the end of the little finger extended, ஓரளவு. (c.) சாண்கும்பி--சாண்வயிறு, s. The abdomen a span long. சாண்வயிற்றுக்குப்பாடுபட, inf. To labor for the cravings of the belly a span long. சாண்வயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a mere livelihood, (lit.) to nourish a span of belly. சாண்சீலை, s. [loc.] The fore-lap, the cloth covering the privy parts. சாணளப்பான்--சாணளந்தான்பூச்சி, s. A kind of insect that moves forward by its head and tail, measuring its length at every movement. சாணேற முழஞ்சறுக்க. To climb a span up and slide a cubit down--spoken of slight advance, profit, &c., followed by great decrease. சாணோவயிறு சரீரமெல்லாம்வயிறோ. Is his belly a span long, or is he all belly-spoken of one who supports himself dishonorably. எறும்புந்தன்கையாலெண்சாண். The ant measures eight of its own spans, i. e., no one is to be despised for his low condition or estate. 93)

Of நெல், there are many varieties, but the more common are கார்நெல், குளநெல், சம்பாநெல், செந்நெல், மிளகிநெல், வாலா னெல், which see severally.--The final letter is changed by rule, as நெற்கதிர், நென் மணி. நெற்கொண்டுபோமளவும்நில்லாய்நெடுஞ்சுவரே. [prov.] Tithe of rice, or portion given as tax to government. நெல்லம்புல்--நெல்வைக்கோல், s. Paddy-straw. நெல்லரி, s. Sheaf of rice-corn. நெல்லிடை, s. The Pariah caste, any thing mean, vile, ஓர்சாதி. 3. A corn measure of twenty-four சேர்க்கொத்து, a bushel. A parai, sometimes of thirty measures, ஓரளவு. Compare பரை. 4. [ex பற, fly. ] Wing. feather, plumage, இறகு.--There are several classes among Pariahs, namely, வள்ளுவப் பறை, தாதப்பறை, தங்கலான்பறை,துற்சாலிப்பறை, குழிப்பறை, தீப்பறை, முரசப்பறை, மொட்டப்பறை, அம்புப்பறை, வடுகப்பறை, ஆலியப்பறை, கோலியப் பறை, வழிப்பறை, வெட்டியார்ப்பறை, சங்குப்பறை. பறைக்கம்பு, s. A rod for striking off grain, in measuring, a strickle. பறைக்காளி--பறைக்காலி--பறைக்கால், s. [vul. பறக்காளி.] Muslin of fine cloth woven by Pariahs; also used for a coarse kind. பறைக்குடி, s. A Pariah family. பறைக்கோலம், s. Mean attire or appearance. பறைசாற்ற, inf. To publish govern ment orders by beat of drum. 2. [fig.] To blab out secrets, to tattle, வெளிப்படுத்த. பறைச்சேரி, s. A Pariah village. பறைதட்ட, inf. To beat a drum. 2. As பறைசாற்ற. 3. To strike off the பறை measure, தலைவழிக்க. பறைதட்டினாற்போல. As the beating of a drum; or as a measure of grain, stricken. (used for a distinct sound, or for exactness.) பறைத்துணி, s. [prov.] A coarse kind of cloth made by Pariahs. 2. A dirty cloth. பறைநாகம், s. The black hooded-snake, being the larger kind-oppos. to பாப்பார நாகம். பறைபோட--பறையறைய, inf. As பறைசாற்ற. பறைப்பருந்து, s. A brownish kind of kite or hawk. பறைப்பழக்கம், s. Pariah habits, practices &c. 2. Low, vile, degraded habits. பறைப்பாட்டு, s A song sung by a Pariah, any low song. 2. Low abuse, as offered by a Pariah, &c., திட்டு. பறைபாட்டுக்குஞ் [or பறைப்பேச்சுக்கும்.] சுரை ப்பூவிற்குமணமில்லை. The song or speech of a Pariah, and the flower of சுரை gourd are both destitute of fragrance. பறைப்புடையன், s. A kind of புடை யன் serpent. பறைப்பூச்சி, s. [prov.] A spider. பறைப்பேச்சு, s. Low, vulgar language, the ungrammatical dialect of Pariahs. பறைமுழக்கு, v. noun. The sounding of drums by Pariahs at the temples of the ferocious deities, and at cross roads, in case of sickness. பறைமுறை, s. Publishing by beat of drum. பறைமுறைசாற்ற--பறைமுறைபோட --பறைமுறையிட, inf. As பறைசாற்ற. பறைமேளம், s. The drum of Pariahs. பறையர், s. [pl.] The drummer caste. பறையவளவு, s. A Pariah compound. garden, &c. பறையவீடு, s. A Pariah house. பறையன், s.
