aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. The eight super-human powers, எண்வ கைச்சித்தி. See சித்தி. அஷ்டசுபம்--அஷ்டமங்கலம், s. The eight auspicious objects, to meet which is thought a favorable omen. See மங்கலம். அஷ்டதந்திரவாதம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. One of the eight forms of puja. 2. Binding the cardinal points by incantations, &c. See திக்குக்கட்டு. அஷ்டபந்தனஞ்சாத்த, inf. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. Saturn situated in the eighth sign from that of one's birth, when his influence is deemed the most malignant, எட்டாமிடத்துச்சனி. அஷ்டமாந்தம், s. The eight kinds of disease in children. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. tirumāl (p. 240) s. Vishnu, as lord of illusion, in the universe, விட்டுணு; [ex மால், illusion.] திருமாலவதாரம், 1. Ten incarnations of Vishnu. 1. Matsya, மச்சம், a fish assumed to kill சோமுகன், an Asura who had stolen the Vedas and hidden them in the sea. 2. Kurma, கூர்மம். tortoise, assumed to support Mount Mandara, used as a churning stick in churning the sea of milk to obtain Amrita, or nectar. 3. Varáha, வராகம், a boar, assumed to open and spread out the earth which இரணியாக்கன் had rolled up, as a scroll, and sunk in the ocean; and to kill him. 4. Narasingha, நரசிங்கம், manlion, assumed to destroy இரணியகசிபன், the younger brother of இரணியாக்கன், who, to avenge the death of his brother, had abolished the worship of Vishnu.--Note. These four were assumed without parents. 5. Váhmana, வாமனம், the dwarf born of காசிபன் and அதிதி to overcome மாபலி by deceit, coming to him as a beggar. 6. Parasurama, பரசுராமன், or the axe bearing Rama, born of சமதக்கினி and இரேணுகை to kill the Kshtriyas who oppressed the brahmans. 7. Ramachandra, இராமன், king of Ayodhya, born of தசரதன் and கோசலை, to kill Ravana, king of Lanka, and other Rakshasas. 8. Balab'hadra, பலபத் திரன், half brother of krishna; his father's name was வசுதேவன், and he had two mothers, தேவகி and உரோகணி. He come to destroy பிரலம்பன் and his Rakshasas. 9. Krishna, கண்ணன், son of வசு தேவன் and தேவகி, came to excite the wars of the Bharata, and to relieve the earth of its over-burdened population. 1. The horse, கற்கி, yet future, and for the purpose of destroying the universe.--Note. The poet Jayadeva places Krishna as the eighth and makes the ninth, Buddha. Another class of fifteen incarnations of Vishnu is given. 1. சனகன், Sanaka. 2. சனந்தனன், Sanandana. 3. சனாதன், Sanáta. 4. சனற்குமாரன், Sanatkumara. Rishis regarded as representatives of Brahma and celebrated in the Bagavata. 5. நரநாராயணன், Naranarayana, a great personage mentioned in the Maha B'harata. 6. கபிலன், Capila, founder of the Sank'hya philosophy. 7. இடபன், Vrishab'ha-Yogi, the first of the twenty-four Jaina saints. 8. நாரதன், Nárada,, inventor of the lute, messenger of the gods, and first of the ten principal Munis. 9. அயக்கிரீவன் ((lit.) the horse-headed), Hayagriva, of the Maha Bharata, to be distinguished from the Asura of the same name. 1. தத்தாத்திரேயன், Dattatreya, mentioned in Bagavata. 11. மோகினி, Mohini, a fascinating female. (See மோ கினி.) 12. யாகபதி, Yágapati, the lord of sacrifices, always receiving the first of the offerings. 13. வியாதன், Vyasa, son of Parásara, arranger of the Vedas. 14. தன்வந்தரி, D'hanvantari, a physician of the gods. (See தன்வந்தரி.) 15. பௌத் தன், Budha, the head of the Buddhist system; by some considered the ninth principal Avatar. திருமாலாயுதம், 5, s. The five weapons of Vishnu. 1. சங்கம் or பாஞ்சசன்னியம், chank; 2. சக்கரம் or சுதரிசனம், a wheellike missile; 3. தனுசு or சாரங்கம், bow. 4. வாள் or நாந்தகம், sword; 5. தண்டு or கௌமோதகி, club.--Note. These are pictured on a metal plate, and worn on the neck as an ornament, or amulet, by children, which is called பஞ்சாயுதம். திருமாலுந்தி, s. The bathing of பார்வதி, under whatever name for purification, திருஅபிஷேகம். 2. Bathing by women with fasting in honor of பார்வதி, ten days in December. திருமுறை, s. A class of sacred writings, odes, &c., திருவாசகம். திருமுற்றம், s. An open space for performing equestrain exercises, கோயிற் சந்நிதி. 2. Temples or sacred places of Vishnu, கோயில். 3. A horse race, course, hippodrome, குதிரைவையாளிவீதி. திருமுன்--திருமுன்பு, s. Divine presence, தேவசன்னிதானம். 2. Presence of a king or other great persons, பெரியோர் சன்னிதானம். திருமெழுக்கு, v. noun. Smearing the floor of a temple and adjacent parts with cow-dung, கோயில்மெழுகுகை. திருமேனி, s. A divine body, form, shape, &c., the person of a deity or saint, திவ்வியதேகம். 2. In some connections, the idol of a temple as a form of the God, விக்கிரகம்.--Note. All forms of deity or nature belong to the female energy. 3. Any ear-jewel worn by females, ஓராபரணம். 4. A plant, குப்பை மேனி, Acalypha, L. திருமேனிகன்றப்பிரம்படிகொண்டசிவனார்...... Siva who was beaten with a ratan so that his divine body was bruised. திருவடி, s. Divine feet, feet of a deity, கடவுளடி. 2. A town on the Malabar coast sacred to Vishnu, Trivandrum. திருவாக்கு, s. The word, declaration or order of a deity, saint, guru, king or other great person; an oracle. திருவாக்குக்கெதிர்வாக்குண்டோ.... Is the word of a high personage to be controverted? திருவாசகம், s. A poem by மாணிக்க வாசகர். திருவாசல்--திருவாயில், s. The gates or door-ways of a temple, including all the openings between the worshipper and the idol, ஆலயவாயில். 2. Word, declaration, command, &c., of a deity, saint, guru, king, &c., தெய்வவாக்கு. திருவாய்மலர, inf. To utter, to declare, to speak, as divine person. திருவாய்மொழி, s. A book of note containing praises to Vishnu, ஆழ்வார்பா டல். திருவாரூர், s. A town in the Tanjore district sacred to Siva. திருவாவினன்குடி, s. The mountain town of Parlany, பழனி, one of the six places sacred to Skanda, முருகர்ஸ்தலம். திருவாழ்ங்கோடு--திருவான்கோடு, s. Travancore, a town and country at the S. W. extremity of southern India, ஓரூர். திருவாளன், s. A rich, prosperous man, செல்வன்; [ex ஆளன். திருவானைக்கா, s. A sacred place, near Trichinopoly, ஓர்ஸ்தலம். திருவிருந்து, s. A divine feast; used for the Lord's Supper, திவ்வியவிருந்து. திருவிலி, s. An unfortunate or poor person, தரித்திரி. 2. A widow or one who has lost her beauty, கைம்பெண்; [ex இலி.] திருவிழா, s. A temple festival, உற் சவம். 2. A temple procession. திருவிழாக்கொண்டாட, inf. To celebrate a festival. திருவிளக்கு, s. The lighted lamp of a temple, or as placed before a holy person, கோயிற்றீபம். 2. A lighted lamp as representing a god. திருவிளையாடல், v. noun. Sports of the deity, commonly of a wonderful, or miraculous character, தெய்வவிளையாட்டு. 2. A book treating on the sixty-four wonderful sports of Siva at Madura. அறுபத்துநாலுதிருவிளையாடல். The sixty-four sacred sports of Siva at Madura. திருவிளையாட்டு, v. noun. The wonderful sports of a deity, தெய்வலீலை. 2. [in burlesque.] Tricks, roguishness, frolics, பாடி. திருவுந்தியார், s. A section of திருவா சகம், composed by மாணிக்கவாசகர், Manikavasakar, திருவாசகத்தோருறுப்பு. திருவுளம்--திருவுள்ளம், s. The will of a god, a king, a guru, &c., [ex உளம், உள்ளம், mind.] 2. (fig.) The Supreme Being, கடவுள். திருவுளங்கொள்ள, inf. To approve, in case of a deity, or holy person; to deign, to be pleased. சுவாமிஅப்படியேதிருவுளங்கொண்டிருக்கிருக்கிறார்.... God is pleased to have it so. திருவுளச்சீட்டு, s. A lot cast or drawn. திருவுளச்செயல், s. Providential occurrence, providence. திருவுளமத்தியஸ்தம், s. Appeal to the deity. திருவுளமறிய, inf. To be witness--as the Supreme Being; used only in some form of the verb. திருவுளமறியச்சொல்லுகிறேன். I say it, God being witness. திருவுளம்பற்ற, inf. To speak, said of a deity or great person; to condescend to speak. திருவுளம்வைத்தல், v. noun. A deity, a guru, &c., exercising grace, deigning, vouchsafing. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A female ornament of solid gold bearing the figure of Lukshmi, worn on the forehead, நுதன்மே லணி. See உத்தி. திருவூசல்--திருவூஞ்சல், s. A swing for the idol, used on the last day of the annual festival, and on some other special occasions; a kind of cot, தேவவூச லாட்டு. திருவூஞ்சலாட, inf. To swing the idol. திருவேங்கடம், s. A place sacred to Vishnu, திருப்பதி. See திசை. திருவேடம், s. Sacred dress of siva, or of his followers, such as red cloths, sacred beads, &c. 2. Ear-rings made of gold or copper worn by the பண்டாரம், the தம்பிரான், &c., சிவனடியார்காதணி. திருவேடம்பூண, inf. To wear the distinguishing marks of the Saiva sect. திருவேரகம், s. Trivaraka near Pondichery, one of the six places sacred to Skanda, குமரன்ஸ்தலம். திருவொற்றாடை, s. Cloth for wiping the body of the idol after bathing, or anointing it, விக்கிரகங்களையொற்றுஞ்சீலை. திருவொற்றியூர், s. A place sacred to Siva, ஓர்சிவஸ்தலம். திருவோணம், s. The twenty-second lunar asterism, containing three stars in the neck of the eagle, ஓணம். திருவோலக்கம், s. The assembly in the temple before an idol. See ஓலக்கம். 5)

Summery, aggregate, epitome, compend, substance of a narrative, abstract of a subject; genus, as including species; general subjects combined, whether analytically or synthetically, சுருக்கம். 5. Assortment, இனமடைப்பு. 6. Article, item, particulars of an account, &c., எண்ணினுறுப்பு. (c.) 7. [in gram.] Omission of a particle in the combination of words, as தொட்டனைத்து, for தொட்டஅனைத்து, as far as day, தொகுத்தல் விகாரம். 8. Elliptical combination of words, as பொன்கொணர்ந்தான், for பொன்னைக்கொணர்ந் தான், he brought the gold. (See தொகைநிலை.) 9. The main division of a treaties, as distinguished from வகை or விரி, அறுவகைச் சூத்திரத்தொன்று. தொகைப்பிசகிப்போயிற்று. The calculation is erroneous. தொகைகட்ட, inf. To finish, to conclude, to bring to an end. 2. To deliver up, to make over, as money, &c., to make a final payment. 3. To sum up, to make a total, to make out the total, to cast up. தொகைகாட்ட, inf. To give a written account. 2. To state a particular number or sum. 3. To make a sum appear large, to magnify. 4. v. n. To appear large, as an amount. தொகைகூட்ட, inf. To add up. தொகைக்காரன், s. A man of considerable property, தனவான், (c.) தொகைச்சூத்திரம், s. One of the six kinds of rules for composition. See சூத்தி ரம். தொகைதைக்க, inf. To make out the grand total of an account. See தை, v. தொகைநிலை, s. A summary, contraction, ellipsis, &c., சுருங்கிநிற்கை. 2. [in gram.] The connection of a word with the பயனிலை by omitting a particle, வேற்று மையுருபுமுதலியதொக்குநிற்றல்.--It embrasces six varieties; 1. வேற்றுமைத்தொகை, the omission of the sign or from of the case, as பொன்கொடுத்தான், for பொன்னைக்கொடுத் தான். 2. வினைத்தொகை, a verb without the sign of the tense, combined with a noun, as கொல்புலி for கொன்றபுலி, கொல்கின்றபுலி, கொல்லும்புலி. 3. பண்புத்தொகை, omission of the adjective sign ஆகிய or ஆய in combining the qualifying epithet with the noun, as கருங்குவளை for கருமையாகியகுவளை, or two nouns in apposition, as ஆதிபக வன். 4. உவமைத்தொகை, the combination of two words with the omission of the sign of comparison, as பான்மொழி for பால் போலுமொழி. 5. உம்மைத்தொகை, omission of the particle உம், as கபிலபாணர் for கபிலனு ம்பாணனும்; also இராப்பகல் for இராவும், பகலும். --Note. In this combination. there is commonly no reduplication. 6. அன்மொ ழித்தொகை, a metonomy or omission of a word, commonly the name of a person, immediately after any of the five preceeding ellipses, as பொற்றொடி. for பொற் றொடியையுடையாள், the golden braceletdamsel. தொகைநிலைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem consisting of a fixed, even number of verses, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். தொகைநிலைத்தொடர்மொழி, s. As உவ மைத்தொகை. (R.) தொகைநிலையுருவகம், s. [in rheto.] A perfect metaphor, ஓரலங்காரம். தொகைபடுவது, appel. n. Contraction of words, as தொகப்படுவது. தொகைபார்க்க, inf. To sum of cast up the amount. (c.) தொகைபூட்ட, inf. [prov.] To balance accounts, to strike a balance, கணக்குச்சரிக் கட்ட. 2. As தொகைதைக்க. தொகைப்படுத்த--தொகையாக்க, inf. To make up an even number. 2. To make a large sum. 3. To sum up; to reduce to heads. தொகைப்பிசகு--தொகைமோசம், s. An error in a reckoning. 2. (fig.) A mistake, a blunder. தொகைப்பொருள், s. Recapitulation; peroration, விரித்தபொருளின்அடக்கம். தொகைமோசம், s. See தொகைபிசகு. தொகையகராதி, s. One of the four divisions of சதுரகராதி, which see. தொகையுருவகம், s. As பண்புத்தொ கை. (R.) தொகையுவமம், s. Contraction of metaphor. See உவமைத்தொகை. தொகையேற்ற, inf. To make a large sum, by the addition of many small items, commonly as a debt. 2. As தொ கைகூட்ட. (c.) தொகையேறுதல், v. noun. Swelling in a large sum by the addition of many items. 2. Forming a total, an amount. தொகைவகை, s. Head and divisions of a subject. தொகைவகைவிரி, s. Heads of a subject, its general divisions, and discussion, &c., தொகைவிரி, s.
