கத்தன்
kttṉ (p. 92) s. An agent, a doer, a maker, an author, &c., செய்பவன். See கந்தன். The word is also written கருத்தன். Sans. கர்த்தா. அவனேவெட்டவும்விடவுங்கத்தன். He can either behead him or spare him; i. e. he has arbitrary power. கத்தராளி, s. [prov. vul.] A chief, a principal, an owner, a competent person, தலைவன். அவன்அதற்குக்கத்தராளியோ. Is he competent for that? கத்தவியம், s. See கர்த்தவியம். கத்தா, s. God, கடவுள். கத்தாக்கள், s. kiruttiyam (p. 111) s. Act, actions, performances, operation, தொழில். 2. Moral actions good or bad, involving future retributions, கன்மக்கிரியை. 3. A course of conduct, நடக்கை. 4. Work, business, employment, லௌகிகவேலை. 5. Religious rules, prescribed duties, கடமை. 6. Rites, ceremonies, &c., religious acts or practice, சடங்கு. 7. The operations of the deity--popularity in the characters of creator, preserver and destroyer; but in the mystic parts of the Agama system, the works of obscuring and enlightening the soul are superadded. Wils. p. 243. KRUTYA. தன்கிருத்தியந்தான்பார்க்கவேண்டும். Each one must perform his appropriate duties, personal, social, relative, civil, &c. கிருத்தியகர்த்தா, s. An operating deity, or a god who performs either of the five great operations in the universe. கிருத்தியகர்த்தாக்கள், s. (pl.) Agents who carry on operations in the universe; also, those of the விஞ்ஞானகலர் and பிர ளயாகலர் class of souls that have advanced so as to be cleansed from மலம், and permitted to be operative. கிருத்தியப்பிழை, s. Misdeeds, misbehaviour. 2. Failure or transgression in the performance of prescribed rites, ceremonies or other duties. கிருத்தியமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not practise the rites of the religion. ஒருகிருத்தியமுமில்லாதவன். One unemployed. கிருத்தியமுடிக்க, inf. To perform prescribed duties--as religious rites, ceremonies, &c. கிருத்தியம்பண்ண--கிருத்தியம்நடத்த inf. To perform the works of creation, &c..--as a deity, ஐந்தொழில்செய்ய. The direct object of this work is fancied to be; 1. To cleanse the soul from its moral defilements. 2. To cause it to experience the fruit of former actions. 3. To give it a temporary rest. 4. To produce an equilibrium between the good and evil actions of the soul. 5. To emancipate it from the பாசம் entanglements. (சிவ. சி.) 2. To perform works, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 3. To perform the duties of one's calling, தொழில்செய்ய. 4. To perform the funeral rites for a deceased ancestor, உத்தரகிரியைசெய்ய. பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations of deity under various names, forms and modifications, viz.: 1st. சிருட்டி or படை த்தல், the work of creating or transforming matter, evolving it from the primitive Maya, producing words, furnishing the soul with its appropriate body, according to its actions in a previous birth, &c. In the popular system, this office is ascribed to Brahma. 2d.திதி or காத்தல், the work of preserving, usually ascribed to Vishnu. 3d. சங்காரம் or அழித்தல், the work of destroying, or of reducing the universe to the primitive Maya, through numerous involutions, --as earth into water, water into fire, &c. This office is ascribed to உருத்தி ரன், who by his worshippers is identified with Siva whom they consider supreme. 4th. திரோபவம் or மறைத்தல், the work of obscuration, or the veiling of the soul in moral darkness, and beclouding the understanding, so that the divine being cannot be perceived, while the mind attracted and illuded by visible and sensual objects, is excited to the performance of new actions, by which absolute liberation from பாசம் entanglements is prevented, and connection with Maya and its consequent transmigrations--except where the sanchita (சஞ்சிதம்) of former births is exhausted --is indefinitely prolonged. This is ascribed to மயேச்சுரன். 5th. அனுக்கிரகம் or அருளல், this is a work of benevolence as exerted for the benefit of the soul in furnishing it with appropriate bodies by which to expiate the guilt of former actions, though obscuring it with திரோ பவம், while it is thus working itself clear, at length withdrawing the veil and showing it that all visible and sensual objects are illusory and deceptive; also annihilating the passions and exciting disgust toward the objects of sense, and utter indifference to all mundane affairs, and thus causing entire cessation from physical and moral actions, and maturing it for final emancipation, and union with the Supreme. It is ascribed to சதாசிவம். சமுசாரகிருத்தியம், s. Domestic affairs, household business. 10) *

The son of Arichandra, one of the six monarchs of India, அரிச்சந்திரன்மகன். தேவதாசி, s. (St.) A dancing and singing girl of a temple, commonly a courtesan, தேவடியாள்.--Note. The courtesans of the gods are உருவசி, மேனகை, திலோத்தமை and அரம்பை. தேவதாரம், s. Any of the five famous trees in Swerga, ஐந்தருவிலொன்று. 2. A medicinal, fragrant tree, செம்புளிச்சை. 3. [pl. of தேவன்.] Gods, celestials, deities, objects of worship, gods of Swerga or any other inferior class, சுரர். 2. Honorable persons, as a guru or priest, உயர்ந்தோர்.--Note. According to the Saiva sect the superior gods, or forms of the first order assumed by the Deity are five, viz.: 1. Brahma, பிரமா. 2. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 3. Rudra or Siva, உருத்திரன். 4. Mayesvara, மயேச்சுரன். 5. Sathasiva, சதாசிவன், These are called, பஞ்சமூர்த்திகள்; the five Murtis, or பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள்; five lords. தேவர்கோயில், s. A temple, தேவால யம். தேவர்கோன்--தேவேந்திரன், s. The gods of Swerga, 33,,, are divided into four classes, with a chief for each கோடி, or 1,,, as follows. 1.துவாதசாதித்தர், the twelve Adityas. ஆதித்தர், (lit.) the twelve suns, chiefs of their class numbering with them, 12,,, 2. ஏகாதசருத்திரர், the eleven Rudras. உருத்திரர், lords of their companies. comprising in all, 11,,, 3. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், the eight Vasus. their classes, including themselves, containing 8,,. 4. மருத்துவர், the two Asvinis, அச்சுவினிகள், the two physicians, the whole class being 2,,. தேவலகன், s. A brahman who attends on an idol, அர்ச்சகப்பிராமணன். W. p. 423. DEVALAKA. தேவலோகம், s. World of the gods, Swerga, the third of the secven upper worlds, of which Indra is king, the lowest heaven of mortals, who assume the form of gods for a residence in it. The enjoyments are all sensual, and the period of their continuance depends on the merit of the persons while on earth. When this is exhausted, they return for another period of probation; or go to a place of suffering for the expiration of previous demerit. This is the only heaven presented to the hope of the multitude, and generally the highest bliss they anticipate, சுவர் க்கம். தேவவசனம்--தேவவாக்கு, s. The word of God, the divine, word, கடவுள்வாக்கு. தேவவசீகரம், s. [R. Cathol. usage] Transubstantiation. See வசீகரணம். தேவவருஷம்--தேவவருடம், s. A year of the gods. See தேவாண்டு. தேவவிரதன், s. (St.) Bishma, வீடுமன். 2. A pious or religious person, கடவுளைவழி படுவோன். W. p. 434. DEVAVRUTA. தேவவிருட்சம், s. Any of the five species of trees in Swerga, பஞ்சதரு. W. p. 424. DEVAVRUKSHA. தேவவெளிப்படுத்தல், s. (Chirs. usage.) Divine revelation. தேவவைத்தியம், s. Superior medical preparations requiring a knowledge of chemistry, and regarded as of divine origin. See வைத்தியம். தேவன், s. A Deity, a god, a divine being, கடவுள். W. p. 421. DEVA. 2. A title given to அகம்படியர் caste. 3. A title given to some among Maravars. 4. (சது.) The name of Argha, அருகன். தேவாங்கம், s. Silk cloth, பட்டுச்சீலை. தேவாசனம், s. [in chris. usage.] The throne of god, an altar, கடவுளிருக்கை. தேவாசுவம்--தேவாஸ்வம், s. The horse of Indra, இந்திரன்பரி; [ex அசுவம்.] தேவாண்டு--தேவஆண்டு, s. A year of the gods of Swerga, being three hundred and sixty-five yaers of mortals, திவ்வியவருஷம். தேவாதாயம்--தேவதாயம், s. Allowance for the support of heathen temples. தேவாதி, s. God, கடவுள், (சது.) தேவாதிதேவன், s. The God of gods. தேவாதியர், s. [com.தேவாதிகள்.] The gods of Swerga and other celestials. தேவாதீனம், s. Properties, peculiar rights, prerogative, &c., of a deity. 2. Divine providence. See தெய்வாதீனம். தேவாத்திரம்--தேவாஸ்திரம், s. A divine missile-weapon from the gods. தேவாமிர்தம்--தேவாமுதம், s. The ambrosia of the gods, the food of immortality, தேவருணவு. தேவாரம், s. Divine praises, songs, &c., chanted by an assistant of the priest others, after the performance of the puja in the Saiva temples. They were made by the three celebrated servants of Siva, அப்பர், சம்பந்தர் and சுந்தரர், and are called the Tamil Vedas, being considered divine. தேவாலயம், s. A temple, a place of worship, any sacred shrine, கோயில். W. p. 424. DEVALAYA. 2. (சது.) The golden mountain Naha Meru, as the favorite resort of the gods, மேருகிரி. See ஆலயம். தேவாலயத்தினுடைமை, s. Temple property, கோயிற்சொத்து. தேவானுட்டிப்பு, v. noun. Religious practice, duties, exercise, worship, &c., [ex அனுஷ்டிப்பு, observance.] தேவி, s. A goddess. 2. Parvati, பார் வதி. 3. Durga, துர்க்கை. 4. Kali. காளி. 5. A queen, the wife of a prince, or nobleman, a term of respect to a married women, சீமாட்டி. 6. A wife, மனைவி--as அண்ணன்தேவி. elder brother's wife. தேவிகோட்டம், s. Any temple of Kali. காளிகோயில்; [ex கோட்டம்.] 2. A town, ஓ ரூர். W. p. 424. DEVIKOD'D'A. தேவிபட்டனம், s. The town of Devipatam, ஓரூர். தேவீகம்--தேவிகம், s. [com தெய்வீ கம். Divinity. தேவேந்திரன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். தேவோக்கித்தம்--தேவோக்தம், s. Divine revelation, தேவவெளிப்படுத்தல்; [ex Sa. Ukta, spoken. (Beschi.) தேவோத்தியானம், s. pañca (p. 290) --பஞ்சம், adj. Five-fold, ஐந்து. W. p. 493. PANCHAT or PANCHAN. பஞ்சகச்சஞ்சொருக, inf. To tuck up the cloth in five ways. See சொருகு, v. பஞ்சகச்சாயம், s. Five kinds of cakes. பஞ்சகதி, s. The five paces of the horse. See துரககதி. பஞ்சகந்தம், s. The five aromatics. See கந்தம். பஞ்சகம், s. Any thing of five parts. பஞ்சகம்மாளர், s. [also பஞ்சாளர்.] The five castes of mechanics. See கம்மாளர், under கம். பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள், s. The five deities, or forms of deity performing operations for the benefit of souls. 1. பிரமா, creator, or evolver of the universe; 2. விட்டுணு, preserver, who furnishes each soul with its allotted portion of jois, and sorrows, as the results of former actions; 3. உருத்திரன், destroyer, reducing souls and worlds to their primitive elements; 4. மகேசுரன், obscurer, darkening the understanding, that the soul may act, and work off its accumulation of moral evil, so as to become ripe for salvation; 5. சதாசிவன், enlightener of illuminator, who imparts divine grace, and prepares the soul for emancipation, and union with the deity. See பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், under கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகலாத்தானங்கள், s. The five parts of the body touched by the gurus in giving தீட்சை. பஞ்சகலை, s. The five developments of the soul in its beatification are; நிவிர்தி, பிரதிஷ்டை, வித்தை, சாந்தி,சாந்தியாதீதம். (தத்துவ.) பஞ்சகல்யாணி, s. A horse whose feet and forehead are white. See கலியாணி. பஞ்சகன்னியர், s. The five famous women worshipped by females, as able to confer benefits. See கன்னிகை. பஞ்சகாவியம், s. The five ancient classic poems. See காவியம். பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations performed by five பஞசகர்த்தாக்கள். See ஐந் தொழில், கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகுரோசஎல்லை, s. The distance of five calls of குரோசம், around Benares, within which no foreign religionist, or other unclean person, should come. பஞ்சகோசம், s. The five sheaths of the soul. See கோசம். பஞ்சகோணம், s. A pentagon. See ஐங்கோணம். பஞ்சகோலம், s. The mixture of five spices, சுக்கு, திப்பிலி, திப்பிலிமூலம், செவ்வியம், and சித்திரமூலம்; [ex Kola. pepper.] பஞ்சகௌடம், s. The five divisions of Bengal or the கௌடம் country. See கௌடம். பஞ்சகௌவியம், The five products of the cow, used in ceremonial purifications, viz. milk, curds, ghee, urine and dung, ஆனிடத்தைந்து. பஞ்சகௌவியம்கூட்டித்தெளித்தல். Mixing the five ingredients and sprinkling the the floor, &c.--Note. The same mixture is administered to the woman after child-birth; also sprinkled on the child at the time of purification. பஞ்சகொ?வியப்பிராசினம். Eating the above compound as a purification. பஞ்சசத்தி, s. The five saktis. See சத்தி. பஞ்சசயனம், s. The five kinds of beds. See சயனம். பஞ்சசிகை, s. The five parts of the body which the Shastras forbid to be shaved; the crown of the head, the two eye-brows, and the arms from the elbow to the hand. பஞ்சசுத்தி, s. The five purifications. See சுத்தி. பஞ்சணை, s. [com. for பஞ்சசயனம்.] The five kinds of mattresses, filled with silk-cotton, red cotton, white cotton, hair, or feathers. 2. See பஞ்சு. பஞ்சதந்திரம், s. [in politics.] The five means of accomplishing one's object; 1. மித்திரபேதம், sowing discord among friends; 2. சுகிர்லாபம், associating with equals; 3. சக்திவிக்கிரகம், associating with a foe and ruining him; 4. அர்த்தநாசம், spending one's property to gain an object; 5. அசம்பிரெட்சியம், acting without inquiry, examination, &c. பஞ்சதந்திரக்கதை, s. Panchatantra. பஞ்சதம்--பஞ்சதை, s. Death, dissolution og the five elements of whose aggregate the body consists, மரணம். பஞ்சதரு--பஞ்சதாரு, s. The five trees in Swerga. A tortoise, ஆமை. W. p. 493. PANCHANAKHA. பஞ்சநகக்கூர்மையோன், s. A tortoise as having five divisions in its claws. பஞ்சநதி, s. The Punjaub having five rivers, as famous for sacred bathing. பஞ்சநிம்பம், s. The five parts of the Neem, or Margosa tree; the flowers fruit, leaves, bark and root; [ex நிம்பம், margosa.] பஞ்சபட்சி, s. The five birds for augury. See பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், under காதல். --The letters, அ, இ, உ, எ, and ஒ, are applied to the birds, and the following accidents, உண்டி, feeding, நடை, walking, அரசு, governing, தூக்கம், sleeping, and சாவு; dying. பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், s. A treatise on augury. பஞ்சபட்சிவேளை, s. Augury from the eating, sleeping, walking, governing and dying of the five birds, between the full and the new moon. 2. An auspicious hour, ascertained by augury. பஞ்சபர்வங்கள், s. Five religious ceremonial days in each fortnight. பஞ்சபாணம், s. [alsoஐங்கணை.] The five arrows of Kama consisting of five kinds of flowers; வனசம், lotus; 2. குதம், mango; 3. அசோகு, ashoka; 4. முல்லை, jasmine; 5. நீலம், blue water lily. பஞ்சபாணன், s. Kama, the god of love, as armed with the five arrows, காமன். பஞ்சபாணாவஸ்தை, s. The five effects produced by the arrows of Kama; சுப்பிரயோகம், thinking and talking of the person loved; 2. விப்பிரயோகம், sighing and lamenting; 3. சோகம், heat or feverishness, nausea and languishing; 4. மோகம், weeping and bewliderment of the faculties; 5. மரணம், death or suspension of the natural powers. பஞ்சபாணி, s. Parvati, as armed with five arrows, பார்வதி. பஞ்சபாண்டவர், s. [pl.] The five Pandavas. See ஐவர். பஞ்சபாதகம், s. [pl.] [also பஞ்சமாபாதகம்.] The five heinous sins; கொலை, murder; 2. காமம், lust; 3. களவு, theft or fraud; 4. கள்ளுண், drinking intoxicating liquor; 5. குருநிந்தை, abuse of the Guru. (சது) --Some Omit காமம், and others, குருநிந்தை. and give பொய், instead. பஞ்சபாதகன், s. One guilty of the five heinous. 2. One very oppers sive, and unjust, as பஞ்சமாபாதகன். பஞ்சபாத்திரம், s. A kind of vessel of five plates collectively, or made of five metals, used by advanced religionists, to hold water for purification, பஞ்சலோக பாத்திரம். 2. (R.) The centre piece of this vessel. பஞ்சபூதம், s. The five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and ether. பஞ்சபூதஅணு, s. The five atomic bases. See பரமாணு under பரமம். பஞ்சப்பிராணன், s. The five vital airs constituting life--commonly reckoned ten. See வாயு. பஞ்சமகதி, s. Final bliss, liberation from births and absorption in the deity --there being four other states, மோட்சம். பஞ்சமகாயக்கியம், s. The five special sacrifices or oblations. A grievous sinner, one quilty of the five heinous crimes, பஞ்சபாதகன். 2. A very oppressive, unjust of cruel man, துஷ்டன். (c) பஞ்சமி, s. The fifth day of the moon, either in her increase or decrease, ஐந் தாந்திதி. 2. The last five of the lunar days; a death occurring on the first of these is portentous of death to five others in the house, or it vicinity; on the second day to four others, &., on which account, if the death occur on the first day, the corpse is carried out through a hole made in the wall, the house is vacated for months, and various ceremonies are performed to appease the incensed goddess, அவிட்டமுத லைந்துநாள், commonly தனிஷ்டபஞ்சமி. 3. The goddess Durga, துற்கை, அவிட்டபஞ்சமி. The last five lunar days, as பஞ்சமி, 2. பஞ்சமிதேவதை--பஞ்சமிப்பேய், s. [prov.] The tutelary deity of the five unlucky days. பஞ்சமியிற்செத்தவீடு, s. A house forsaken in consequence of a death occurring in one of the பஞ்சமி days. 2. பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five pointed weapon; [ex முகம், et அஸ்திரம்.] பஞ்சமூலம், s. Five kinds of medicinal roots, of which there are two classes. See மூலம். பஞ்சமூலகஷாயம், s. A decoction of five different medicinal roots. See கஷாயம். பஞ்சயாகம்--பஞ்சவெச்சம், s. The five daily sacraments or oblations, as பஞ்சமாகாயக்கியம். See எச்சம். பஞ்சரத்தினம், s. Five precious stones. 2. The name of a treatise, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். பஞ்சராசிகம், s. Rule of five, ஐந்தொ கைவினா. பஞ்சராத்திரம், s. A sect of Vaishnuvas. பஞ்சலக்கணம், s. The five parts of Grammar. See இலக்கணம். பஞ்சலிங்கம், s. The five kinds of Linga, represented by the five elements. See இலிங்கம். பஞ்சலோகம், s. The five simple metals. See உலோகம். 2. A mixture of the five, ஐவகைலோகக்கலப்பு. பஞ்சவர்தூதன், s. Vishnu, once employed as a messenger for the five பஞ்ச வர், or Pandavas, விஷ்ணு. பஞ்சவர்னம், s. The five colors; white, black, red, yellow and green. பஞ்சவர்னக்கிளி, s. The finest species of parrot. See கிளி. பஞ்சவாசம், s. The five aromatics or spices. See பஞ்சகந்தம். பஞ்சவிஷயம், s. The object of the five senses; the whole material world See புலன். பஞ்சாக்கரம்--பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. The five lettered incantation, சிவாயநம, which see. பஞ்சாக்கினி, s. The five fires amidst which the devotee performs austerities. one toward each quarter and the sun over-head; or, according to others, a fire in the centre. 2. The five mystic fires in the body, given as இராகம், கோபம், காமம், சடம், தீபனம். Compare தீ. பஞ்சாக்கினிமத்தி, s. The centre of an area in which are five fires, as a place for the performance of austerities. பஞ்சாங்கம், s. An almanac embracing five things; lunar days or phases of the moon, திதி; solar days or week, வாரம்; periods of the asterisms, நட்சத்திரம்; the yogas, யோகம்; and karnas, கரணம்; [ex அங்கம், member, அ becoming ஆ in combination.] பஞ்சாங்கங்கணித்தல்--பஞ்சாங்கம் எ ண்ணுதல், v. noun. Calculating an almanac. பஞ்சாங்கஞ்சொல்லுதல், v. noun. Notifying special days and periods, with the ceremonies to be performed, as the household priest to princes. பஞ்சாங்கதெண்டன்-பஞ்சாங்கநமஸ்கா ரம், s. Prostrating the five members of the body, the feet, hands and head to the earth. Compare சாஷ்டாங்கம். பஞ்சாங்கபலன், s. Astrological results for the year as given in the almanac. பஞ்சாங்கமானியம், s. Land held free by such a brahman for his duty. பஞ்சாங்கவாக்கியம், s. [in Hindu astron.] The table of the moon's given longitudes from apogee and daily motions for two hundred and fortyeight days. பஞ்சாங்குலம், s. The castor-plant whose leaves resemble the five digits, ஆமணக்கு; [ex அங்குலம்.] பஞ்சாசயம், s. The five receptacles in the body are: ஆமாசயம், the stomach; 2. இரத்தசயம், the heart; 3. கர்ப்பாசயம், the womb; 4. சலாசயம், the bladder; 5. மலாசயம், rectum. பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. As பஞ்சாக்கரம். பஞ்சாமிர்தம்--பஞ்சாமுதம், s. The five delicacies; milk, curds, ghee, sugar, and honey. (in Wils.) 2. (R.) A mixture of plantains, cocoa kernel, milk, sugar and honey, used in anointing an idol. பஞ்சாமிலம், s. An aggregate of the five acids, jujube. இலந்தை; pomegranate, மாதளை; sorrel, புளியாரை; emblica, நெல்லி, citron, எலுமிச்சை; [ex ஆமிலம்.] W. p. 494. PANCHAMILA. பஞ்சாயுதம், s. The five weapons of Vishnu; the discus, club, chank, bow and sword. 2. [prov.] A gold ornament worn by children or women, on the neck with the tali, bearing in relief the five weapons of Vishnu. It is of two kinds, அரசிலைப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one made in the form of fig-leaf; வட்டப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one in a circular form, ஓராபரணம். பஞ்சாயுதபாணி-பஞ்சாயுதன், s. Vishnu, as bearing the five weapons. பஞ்சார்க்கம், s. Five phenomena of the heavens constantly recurring in connexion with the planets; regarded as exerting planetary influence of an unpropitious character taken into account in astrological computation, viz.: 1. தூமம், smaoke; 2. விதிபாதம், one of twentyseven astrological yogas; 3. வில் or இந்திரவில், rainbow; 4. பரிவேடம், halo; 5. சேது, the descending node. பஞ்சார்க்கதோஷம், s. [in astrol.] Evil influence or result of any of the five அர்்க்கம். பஞ்சாவத்தை, s. The five states of the human intellect. See அவத்தை. பஞ்சாளர், s. [pl.] Mechanics--as பஞ் சகம்மாளர். பஞ்சானனன், s. makā (p. 338) adj. Great, high, exalted, dignified, noble, honorable, பெருமையான. 2. Immense, prodigious, stupendous, monstrous, extreme, அளவற்ற. 3. Superior, greater, paramount, superlative, உயர்ந்த. 4. Intense, மிகுந்த.--Note. This particle is sometimes repeated to express intensity, as மகாமகாப் பட்ட, the greatest. (Beschi.) Also sometimes contracted to மக, and மா, as மகராசா, மாசனங்கள்; [ex மகத்து.] அதுமகாஅரிது. It is very difficult. அதுமகாஅபூர்வம். It is very rare. மகராசன், s. A king, அரசன். 2. A rich or great or good man, சீமான். மகராசா, s. The king, the sovereign. மகராசி, s. A rich or benevolent lady; (lit.) a queen. மகரிஷி, s. An exalted Rishi, மகாரிஷி. மகாஅவதானி, s. A person who has excellent memory. மகாகருவம்--மகாகர்வம், s. Much arrogance. 2. Ten billions. மகாகற்பம், s. The great Kalpa, consisting of a vast period, probably the life time of Bramha, or 155,52,,, solar years, after which there will be a universal destruction.--Note. By analogy it would be only 1 கற்பம் of 4,32,, each or 43,2,, years; but கற்பம் is used very indefinitely. மகாகாசம்--மகாகாயம், s. The air, or ether at large; as distinguished from கடாகாசம், or air in a pot, the atmosphere, பெருவெளி. மகாகாலம், s. A great and long period of time, sometimes used for eternity, நெடுங்காலம். மகாகிதி--மகாக்ஷிதி, s. A certain number, one thousand trillions. மகாகோணி--மகாக்ஷோணி, s. Ten trillions. மகாகோரம், s. A division of hell, or Tartarus, நரகத்தினோரிடம். மகாசகை, s. A plant bearing an unfading flower, Gomphr&oe;na globosa, வாடா மல்லிகை. W. p. 652. MAHASAHA. மகாசங்கம், s. A hundred billions. 2. Head quarters, the chief place, the court, நீதிஸ்தலம். மகாஞானி, s. One who has attained to the highest degree of religion. மகாண்டு, s. The Hindu cycle of sixty years; [ex ஆண்டு.] மகாதலம், s. The sixth of the nether worlds. See கீழுலகம். 2. As மகாஸ்தலம். மகாதிசை, s. Aggregate influence of the planets, counted according to the natal asterism for the horoscope. மகாதீவு, s. The Maldive islands, said to have been, in ancient times, one island. மகாதேவன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Siva --as supreme, சிவன். 3. Epithet of god among various votaries, தெய்வம். 4. A god of the sea or waters, வருணன். மழையும்பிள்ளைப்பேறும்மகாதேவருக்குந்தெரியாது. Rain and child-birth are mysterious even to the gods. மகாதேவி, s. Parvati as the great goddess, பார்வதி. மகாதோஷம், s. Very great sin. மகாதோரை, s. A large number, ஓரெண். மகாத்தியாகம், s. Assembling --as the chiefs of a nation. மகாநிகற்பம், s. An inconceivable length of time, probably one-thousand கற்பம். மகாநிதி, s. One of Kuvera's treasures. See நிதி. மகாநுபாவன், s. Great enjoyment, enjoyment of affluence and luxury. மகாப்பிரகாசசத்தி, s. Mica, as அப் பிரகம். மகாப்பிரதோஷம், s. The thirteenth evening from the new and full moon, a time in which the Saivas, expect particular benefits from their religious exercises. See பிரதோஷம். மகாப்பிரபு, s. A very great, illustrious, or holy person. மகாப்பிரபுக்கள்சபை, s. House of lords. (adopted.) மகாப்பிரளயம், s. The great deluge which destroys the universe at the end of each great Kalpa See பிரளயம். 2. (fig.) A number, ஓரெண். மகாமகம், s. [com. மாமகம்--colloq. மாமா ங்கம்.] The occurrence of the full moon in or about the asterism, மகம், with other astronomical incidents, which occur once in twelve years. Peculiar rites in honor of Siva, are then performed. The time is auspicious for bathing, especially at Combaconum. மகாமண்டபம், s. An open large court of temple, the fourth from the shrine. மகாமந்திரம், s. [com. மூலமந்திரம்.] An appropriate name of Deity. மகாமந்திரமூர்த்திகள், s. A class of souls of a superior order, consisting of seventy-five millions. Of these, thirty-five millions attain liberation when the work of creation is finished. மகாமந்திரி, s. The prime minister. மகாமாயி--மகாமாரி, s. [com. மகமாயி.] A name of Durga, துர்க்கை. மகாமாயை, s. Mother of the king of the Asuras, சூரபன்மன்தாய். 2. As மாமாயை. மகாமிருகம், s. The elephant, யானை. மகாமுத்திரை, s. One of the symbols of the Yoga system, யோகமுத்திரை. மகாமுனி--மகாரிஷி, s. A great Muni. 2. A name of Agastya, அகஸ்தியன். மகாமேரு--மகமேரு, s. The great Meru, or golden mountain, thought to be in the middle of the Central continent. மகாயக்கியம்--மகாயாகம், s. The first order of sacrifices. It is of five kinds; 1. பிரமம், or வேதமோதல், reading and learning Vedas; 2. தெய்வம், or ஓமம்வ ளர்த்தல், kindling a sacrificial fire; 3. பூதம், or பலியீதல், fragments of food left at an oblation; 4. பிதிர், or தர்ப்பணமுடித் தல், presenting water to the manes of persons deceased; 5. மானுடம், or இரப் போர்க்குணவீதல், gifts to beggars. மகாயுகம், s. The great age, the aggregate of the four ages, 4,32, years. மகாயோசனை, s. A large number. மகாரணியம், s. A very large forest, பெருங்காடு; [ex ஆரணியம்.] மகாரதன்--மாரதன், s. A charioteer commanding 11, chariots; any warrior of note, 11,--ந்தேருக்குத்தலைவன். மகாராசன்--மகாராசா, s. A great king, a monarch. W.p. 651. MAHARAJA. 2. An epithet of Kuvera. 3. The great Lukshmi, goddess of felicity. மகாலயம், s. The world of Brahma, பிரமனுலகம். 2. A temple, கோயில். மகாலுத்தன்--மகாலோபி, s. A very great niggard. மகாலோகம்--மகலோகம், s. One of the seven upper worlds. See மேலுலகு. மகாவராகம், s. Vishnu in the hogincarnation, விஷ்ணு. மகாவற்புதம், s. A large number, ஓர் பேரெண்; [ex அற்புதம்.] மகாவாக்கியம், s. A mystic word in the Vedanta, a religious formule among the Saivas and others. மகாவிசுவம்--மகாவிஷீவம்--மகாவிடு வம், s. [in astron.] The moment of the sun's entering Aries, the vernal equinox, but varying several days from the European computation, மேடத்திற்சூரி யன்வருகை. W. p. 651. MAHAVISHUVA. மகாவியாகிருதி, s. The three mystical words, Bhur, Bhuva and Swer, the essential part with ஓம், of the Gayatri of the Brahmans, in their daily incantations, காயத்திரிமந்திரம். மகாவிந்தம், s. A number probably one thousand billions, ஓரெண். 2. A certain city, நளனுடையநகரம். 3. A residence of Vishnu, வைகுந்தம். மகாவிந்து, s. Mica or talc, as அப் பிரகம். மகாவிரதம்--மாவிரதம், s. One of the six approved or orthodox sects of the Saiva religion, சைவசமயத்தொன்று. மகாவிரதர், s. [sing. மகாவிரதி.] Professors of the above sect, சைவர்கள். மகாவெள்ளம், s. A great flood. 2. (fig.) [prov. also இரத் தினாகரம்.] The northern sea, from its connection with India; and the Ganges as being north of Ramisseram. மகோதயம், s. Final beatitude, emancipation from vitality, and absorption into the divine essence, முத்தியிற்கலப்பு. W. p. 653. MAHODAYA. 2. The rising of the sun and moon in conjunction, on a Monday, the sun being in Capricorn, in the month of January, and the moon in the twenty-second lunar asterism, in the seventh யோகம்--regarded as a most auspicious moment for sacred bathing; such is called மகோதயதீர்த்தம்.
