aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

uṇṭā (p. 59) கிறது, னது, கும், க, v. n. To come into existence, to rise into being, happen, occur, take place, become, to be formed, to form, to concrete, உளதாக. 2. To become, to be made or created, தோன்ற. 3. To be conceived, to have origin, கருவுண்டாக. 4. To grow as vegetables, thrive, flourish, to be produced, be productive, &c., முளைக்க. 5. kuṭṭu (p. 117) கிறேன், குட்டினேன், வேன், குட்ட, v. a. To cuff on the head, தலையிற்குட்ட. 2. (fig.) To cheat, overcome by fraud, எத்த. குட்டுப்பட்டாலும்மோதிரக்கையினாலேகுட்டுப்பட வேண்டும். If cuffed at all, let it be with a jeweled hand; i. e. reproof from a worthy character is profitable. வியாபாரத்திலேயவனைக்குட்டிப்போட்டார்கள்.... They have injured him in traffic. காகம்அவன்தலையிலேகுட்டிப்போட்டது. The crow has cuffed him on his head. காகங்குட்டிவிளையாடுகிறார்கள். The boys play crow-cuffing (a play in imitation of the cuffing of crows). குட்டிக்கும்பிட, inf. To cuff the head, three times or more, and then raise the hands closed in worship. குட்டு, v. noun. A blow with the fist on the head; a buffet, a cuff, தலையிற்குட் டுங்குட்டு. குட்டுண்ண, inf. To be buffeted, cuffed, குட்டுப்பட. குட்டுணி, s. The water in the sacred pot, afterwards sprinkled on the people, or sipped by them, as possessing mystic virtue to cure disease, to expiate sin, &c., மந்திரகும்பநீர். கும்பவஸ்திரம், s. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. To carry in procession the sacred pot with appropriate ceremonies. கும்பம்நிறுத்த--கும்பம்வைக்க--கும்பம் ஸ்்தாபிக்க, inf. To set up a sacrificial pot for worship. கும்பம்போட--கும்பங்்கொட்ட, inf. Washing, bathing, &c. குளி, v. noun. Diving for pearls or chanks, முத்துக்குளி, சங்குக்குளி. குளிகாரன்--குளியாள், s. A diver for pearls, chanks, &c. குளிசங்கு, s. Chanks fished in the sea. குளியோட, inf. To seek for pearls, chanks, &c., in the water. சங்குகுளிக்க, inf. T dive for chanks. தீக்குளிக்க, inf. To bathe in the fire, to be burnt--as a widow at her husband's death. 2. To bathe in or be covered with coals of fire--as some women to defend their chastity. மஞ்சட்குளிக்க, inf. To daub with a thin paste of turmeric--as women in bathing. புழுதிகுளிக்க, inf. To become covered with dust--as children in play, or persons in a dust storm. குளிகுளிக்க, inf. [local.] To be delivered of a child, பிள்ளைப்பெற. குளிதோஷம், s. A disease of infancy, குழந்தைப்பற்றினஓர்வியாதி. குளிப்பிடப்பாறுகள், s. [prov.] The banks of a pearl fishery.

tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. Confusion concerning the points of compass, as திசைமயக்கு. திக்குவிசயம், s. Conquering all regions. திக்குவிசயம்பண்ண, inf. To conquer hostile powers. திக்குளார், s. Owners of boundary lands. 27)

If water be beaten it will not divide; i. e. relations, though offended with each other, will reunite. நீர்முகத்தழுக்கில்லை. Where there is water, there is no impurity. நீரடிமுத்து--நீரெட்டிமுத்து, s. A medicinal nut, Jatropha Montana. (Willd.) நீரடைப்பு, v. noun. Stoppage, or suppression of urine, strangury. நீரத்தி, s. A kind of fig-tree. See கொடியத்தி. நீரரண், s. Security of a fortification surrounded by water. See அரண். நீர்மகளிர், s. Nymphs of the waters, நீரில்வாழுந்தெய்வப்பெண்கள். நீரருகல், v. noun. Passing urine with interruptions, and strangury, சிறுநீரருகி யியிறங்கல். நீரலரி, s. A kind if oleander. See அவரி. நீரழிவு--நீரிழிவு, s. [sometimes நீர்க்க ழிவு.] Diabetes. நீராகாரம், s. Water strained from cold rice kept over night for breakfast. நிராசனம்--நீராஞ்சனம், s. [also நிராஞ் சனம்.] Holding a lighted wick in water in which turmeric and lime are dissolved, and margosa leaves placed; and waving it round the idol, ஓர்ஆலாத்தி. 2. Waving lighted, sacrificial grass around ghee, and casting it into the sacred fire; (some give other definitions), சுத்திக ரிக்குமோர்சடங்கு. நீராடல், v. noun. Bathing, playing in water, ஸ்தானஞ்செய்தல். 2. A ripening cocoa-nut in which the water sounds when shaken; also நீராடற்றேங்காய். 3. One of the ten parts of juvenile poetry of the female class. See பிள்ளைத்தமிழ். நீராடற்பதம், s. That stage in the ripening of a cocoa-nut in which when shaken the water sounds. நீராட்ட, inf. To bathe another, bathe an idol, a beast, a corpse, &c., ஸ்நானஞ் செய்விக்க. நீராணிக்கன், s. One who takes care of the sluice of a public tank; used in the Congu country. நீராமைக்கட்டு, s.
