ulru (p. 66) --உலர், கிறது, உலர்ந்தது, உலரு ம், உலர, v. n. To become dry, to desiccate, wither, be dry, or parched as the mouth, tongue, &c., காய. 2. To pine away, to be withered with grief, disease, hunger, journeying, &c., to flag, droop, வாட. மரமுலர்ந்தது. The tree is dead. சரீரமுலர்ந்தது. The body is reduced, emaciated, &c. புடவையையுலரப்போடு. A stone cutting, engraving in stones, சிலாசாதனம். 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. The same as கள்ளிப்பால், the milky juice of the Euphorbia tirucalli. 4. The same as கூகைநீறு, the flour of the root of the Curcuma angustifolia, அங்குசரோசனம். காட்டேரி--இரத்தக்காட்டேரி s. [prop. காடேறி.] A jungle imp, a sylvan nymph, a demoness. புகைக்காடு, s. A great smoke. குடிக்காடு, s. Many houses together, a village, town. பிணக்காடு, s. A field covered with corpses. பருத்திக்காடு, s. A cotton field. நெருப்புக்காடு, s. A large fire. புன்செய்க்காடு, s. High dry land. புல்லுக்காடு, s. Pasture land. வெள்ளக்காடு, s. A general flood. பெருங்காடு, s. Large jungle. பனங்காடு, s. A thick palmyra grove. இடுகாடு--சுடுகாடு s. A place for burying, burning the dead. சுடுகாட்டுக்குப்போனபிணந்திரும்புமோ. A callous tumour, an excrescence, a wart, a corn, a cicatrice from a wound, காய்ப்பு. 3. An unripe boil, &c., காய்ப்பரு. 4. A piece at chess, a die, சொக்கட்டான்காய். கட்டியின்னங்காயாயிருக்கிறது. To form as a fruit; to produce fruit, to bear fruit. காய்காய்க்கிறமரம், s. A tree that bears fruit, not a barren tree. காய்க்கடுக்கன், s. [prov.] An ear-ring with a sacred seed fastened in it, for a bead, from which, if water fall on the body, in bathing, &c., it is deemed very meritorious, உருத்திராட்டக்கடுக்கன். காய்க்குலை, s. A bunch of unripe fruits. காய்ச்சீர், s. [in prosody.] Any of the four metrical feet ending in காய்காய்; also, a metrical foot equivalent in measure to a foot in காய். See சீர். காய்த்தானியம், s. The nine kinds of grains, called முதிரை, நவதானியம். 2. A shrub, கம்பளிகொண்டான், Morus Indica. காய்பறிக்க, inf. To pluck unripe fruits. காய்மடி, s. The thick, hard udder of a cow unfit for milk. காய்மடை, s. [prov.] An offering of fruits, commonly to a ferocious deity, கனிவர்க்கநிவேதனம். காய்ம்பனை, s. [prov.] A fruit-bearing palmyra tree, as distinguished from young trees and males, காய்க்கும்பனை. காய்வள்ளி, s. See வள்ளி. காய்வெட்டிக்கள், s. [prov]. Toddy from a Palmyra tree, the young fruits of which are cut off that the juice may flow from the stalk, காயைவெட்டி இறக்குங்கள். கருக்காய், s. Grain almost ripe. கருங்காய், s. Dark betel-nuts, not yet turned red. செங்காய், s. Fruits or grain turning yellow when ripening. பசுங்காய்--இளங்காய், s. Fruits just formed, tender grain. 2. immature fruit or grain. 90)
