To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். A word used by the learned ancients. மன்னுயிரோம்பியருளாள்வார். They who cherish and exercise charity toward all living. அல்லலருளாள்வார்க்கில்லை. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. A cow or bull appropriated to a temple, which is left to stray as it likes; such are well received and fed. 59)

[in gram.] Possession, ownership, relation of one thing to another, as denoted by the possessive case or the local ablative. The relation is of two kinds; தற்கிழமை, that between a whole and its parts or attributes--as in தலைமயிர் and ஆட்டுக்கால்; and பிறிதின்கிழமை, that between different things--as in மலை யாடு, அவன்வீடு. 7. A day of the week, வாரத் திலொருநாள். 8. A week, வாரம். கிழமைபடவாழ். Live so as to be useful. கிழத்தி, s. A mistress, a lady, தலைவி. 2. A lady in an agricultural district, மரு தநிலத்தலைவி. 3. A woman who bolongs to or is peculiarly adapted to--as in காமக் கிழத்தி, சொல்லின்கிழத்தி, பாலைக்கிழத்தி, மனைக்கி ழத்தி. கிழமைக்குக்கிழமை. From week to week, weekly. கிழமைதோறும். Weekly, every week. கிழமைச்சூனியம், s. [in astrol.] An inauspicious, unpropitious day when the moon is in a nacshatra, unfavorable to that day of the week. கிழமைபிறந்தநாள், s. [in astrol.] The lunar day peculiarly related to a given day of the week; lit. the lunar day on which the day of the week is born. கிழமைவட்டம், s. A week. கிழவர், s. (pl. of கிழவன்.) Proprietors, relations, &c., உரியோர். See கிழவன் under கிழம், infra. ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை, s. Sunday. பெருங்கிழமை, s. Entire or sole right, absolute title, prerogative, முழுவுரிமை. 2. Being connected or related in all possible ways, close friendship, intimacy or familiarity, மிகுநேயம். 39)

kiẕmai (p. 111) --கிழம் s. Oldness, senility, decrepitude, old age, கிழத்தனம். இந்தமாடுமிகுந்தகிழம். This is a very old ox. கிழக்கதை, s. Old stories. 2. The chattering of old people, கிழவர்வார்த்தை. கிழக்குதிரை, s. An old horse. கிழக்கோலம். The appearance or marks of age. கிழடு, s. [vul.] An old thing, commonly said of animals, trees, and contemptuously of a person, வயதுமுதிர்ந்தது. கிழடன், s. An old man; an old chap, in contempt. கிழட்டுப்பசு, s. An old cow. கிழத்தனம், s. Old age; manners or habits of old people. கிழப்பிணம், s. An old fellow, in contempt; a living carcass. கிழமாடு, s. An old ox or cow. கிழவன், s. (pl. கிழவர்.) An old man, an aged man, மூப்புடையோன். 2. The second of the twenty-seven lunar asterisms or nacshatras, or the day during which the moon is in the nacshatra, பரணி. குடுகுடுகிழவன், s. A very old man. கிழவி, s. An old woman, மூப்புடைய வள். கிழவிக்கிழங்கு, s. [prov.] The previous year's root (esculent, &c.), old and useless; from which others have sprung, பழையகிழங்கு. கிழவிமஞ்சள், s. [prov.] old turmeric root of the previous year, பழமையான மஞ்சள். வன்கிழம்--வலுகிழம், s. A very old person, animal or thing, in contempt. 40)

caṉi (p. 173) s. The planet Saturn, the most, malignant, in astrological influence of all the planets, ஓர்கிரகம். 2. Saturday, சனிக்கி ழமை. W. p. 829. S'ANI. 3. (fig.) A person of ill omen whose company is dangerous, சனிபோன்றவன்.--Note. The different positions and influences of the planet are. (1.) அஷ்டமசனி. See under அஷ்டம். (2.) நாலாமிடத்துச்சனி, called also அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி. Saturn in the fourth sign from that of one's birth, where his influence is less malignant. (3.) இரண்டாமிடத்துச்சனி, or பாதச் சனி. Saturn in the sign nest to that in the ascendant, where his influence is indicative of eloquence and oratory. (4.) ஏழ ரையாண்டுச்சனி. Saturn's 7?? years' evil influence called ஏழரை, and divided into three parts, மங்குசனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணச்சனி which see. As saturn is 2?? years in each sign of the zodiac, it occupies 7?? years for three signs, so that a man living ninety years would pass three times through all these periods. See ஏழரை. (5.) பன்னிரண்டாமிடத்துச் சனி. Saturn in the 12th sign from that in the ascendant. (6.) சன்மச்சனி. Saturn in the ascendant. (7.) மகத்துச்சனி. Saturn in the first lunar asterism of Leo called மகம், indicating great calamities. (8.) மீனச்சனி. Saturn in the Pices, considered unpropitious in its influence. இவனெனக்கு மகத்துச்சனிபோலிருக்கிறான். He is a great enemy to me. சனிகழிய--சனியன்றொலைய, inf. To expire or end as any period of saturn's malign influence on a person. 2. To terminate as a cause of calamity, evil, &c. சனிக்கிழமை--சனிவாரம், s. Saturday. சனிக்கிழமைவிரதம், s. [also சனிவிர தம்.] A fast on Saturdays, to avert the evil influences of Saturn, when, before eating, crows, emblems of Saturn, are fed. 2. A fast in honor of Vishnu. சனிபகவான்--சனீச்சுரன், s. The regent of Saturn. சனிபிடித்தல், v. noun. Being seized by Saturn, brought under his malignant influence. 2. (fig.) Being assailed by adverse circumstances, துன்புறுதல். சனிமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing on Saturdays. சனிமூலை, s. The north east, (lit.) Saturn's quarter, வடகிழக்கு. சனியன், s. Saturn the planet. 2. An unlucky person, associating with whom may bring evil. 3. A troublesome person, animal, thing, circumstance, &c. இவன் எனக்குச் சனியனாய் வந்தான். He is a Saturn (an inauspicious person) to me. சனிவேதை, s. The influence of Saturn; pain, சனிதோஷம். (R.) சனிக்காசு, s. A small coin paid to the master, by the scholars, on Saturdays. சனிப்பாட்டு, s. [loc.] A song or poem sung by the boys of a school, near the end of a year, to obtain presents from their parents, and others, for the master. சனியெண்ணெய், s. The oil collected by scholars, from their parents, for their teacher, on Saturdays. 66) *

A section in the poem of பிரபுலிங்கலீலை. சூனியக்காரன், s. fem. சூனியக்காரி.) A wizard, sorcerer, enchanter. சூனியம்பண்ண--சூனியஞ்செய்ய, inf. To be witch, to work witchcraft. 2. To injure, destroy, defile, annihilate, ruin. சூனியதிசை, s. The S. E. point of the compass, bring by some astrological or other influence deemed unpropitious. 2. The direction or side in which the breath does not pass from the nostril, right or left, at any given time. See. சரம். சூனியநிதி, s. A phasis of the moon, which, when a similar one occurs in the same month, is regarded as unpropitious, the other being propitious. சூனியத்துவம், s. Vacuity, emptiness, &c.,--as சூனியம், 4, 5, 6, which see. சூனியநாள், s. An unpropitious day. See கிழமைச்சூனியம். சூனியமனை, s. Bewitched ground. சூனியமாதம், s. To be degenerate, to be ruined--as சுத் தசூனியமாய்ப்போய்விட்டான். சூனியவாதம், s. Atheism as a system, நாஸ்திகமதம். சூனியவாதி, s. An atheist. 2. (c.) As சூ னியக்காரன். சூனியவித்தை, s. One's own peculiar nature or form of existence, சுயரூபம்; used chiefly of the deity. தற்சுட்டு, s. self-reference, தன்னைச் சுட்டுகை. தற்சுந்தரம், s. Self-possession, inherent attribute as peculiar to the deity. தற்சுதந்தரஅறிவு, s. Intuitive knowledge. தற்செயல், s. Providential, without any apparent cause, contingent, தெய்வச் செயல். 2. An accident. (c.) தற்செய்ய, v. n. inf. [prov.] To produce its own natural effects, to prosper by providence, இயல. 2. To be advantageous, favorable, profitable, to issue successfully, பலிக்க. வியாபாரம்அவனுக்குத்தற்செய்யவில்லை. Trade does not prosper with him. தற்செல்வம், s. Strength, power, force, வலி. (சது.) 2. One's own property. தற்பாடி, appel. n. A lark, வானம் பாடி. (R.) தற்புகழ்ச்சி, s. Self-praise, self-applause, self-complacency. தற்புணர்ச்சி, v. noun.
