uṭai (p. 59) s. A species of thorny tree, குடைவேல், Acacia--in the adjective and genitive forms, ஐ is changed into அம், as-உடமுள், the thorn of the உடை tree. 98)

uḷai (p. 67) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To ache or suffer pain in the limbs from weariness, cold, rheumatism, நோவ. 2. To gripe, suffer pain--as persons with dysentery, வயிறுளைய. 3. To ache--as the gums in teething, பல்லுவலிக்க. 4. To suffer--as in bringing forth young, சூலுளைய. 5. To suffer either in mind, or body; to be in a state of suffering, வருந்த. In most of the meanings, a dragging or moving pain is implied. உனக்குமுதுகுளைகிறதா? Does your back ache? i. e. why do you behave so as to incur punishment? உளைந்துளைந்துபேச, inf. To express regret again and again from revolving in mind an injury received. மூக்குளைய, inf. To ache--as the nose. இடுப்புளைய, inf. To feel pain in the hips-as in child-bearing, or as persons in some diseases, or after a long walk. மனமுளைய, inf. To be pained in mind from unkind conduct or expressions. கால்கையுளைய, inf. To suffer pain in the arms and legs. வாயுளைய, inf. To be tired as the mouth by constant talking. வாயுளையுமளவுமலட்டினான். He chattered till his mouth ached. வயிறுளைய, inf. To suffer as in bringing forth young. 2. To suffer with dysentery. குடவளையினங்கள்வயிறுளைந்தீன்றகுருமணி. The bright pearls produced from the round conchs-- (நைட.) உளைமாந்தை, s. [vul.] An internal imposthume, கடுநோய். உளைவு, v. noun. Griping pain, throbbing, வலிப்பு. 2. Hard pain in the limbs, &c.--as from rheumatism, weariness, cold, &c., குடைவு. உளைவுகொள்ள, inf. To ache--as the limbs, with weariness, &c., வலிப்புற. உளைவெடுக்க, inf. To be attacked with griping, or rheumatic pains, வலிப் பெடுக்க. காலுளைவுகையுளைவு, s. Pains in the limbs--as from walking, labor, &c. பல்லுளைவு, s. Supposed distress in the teeth of a snake, or other animal, from the want of opportunity to gratify the disposition to bite, to discharge venom, &c. வயிற்றுளைவு, s. Dysentery. 49)

kuṭā (p. 116) s. A cavity, hollow, &c., in the side of a well or tank; a cavern, குடைவு. 2. A bay, a harbor, a gulf, கடற்குடா. 3. A retired part of a large field, country, &c.; a nook, corner, a recess, கோணம். குடாக்கடல், s. A haven, a harbor, a bay of gulf. வாலியக்குடா, s. A little bay near Kilakare. குடாக்கை, s. [prov.] A corner in a field, வயலின்மூலை. குடாவடி, s. A bear; lit. the bent-footed, கரடி. (p.) 37)

kuṭai (p. 117) s. Umbrella, parasol; canopy --as one of the twenty-one symbols of royalty and victory, ஆதபத்திரம். 2. The knob of a sandal, பாதகுறட்டின்குமிழ். 3. A tree with very large thorns, the குடைவேல், Mimosa, L. 4. The dance of Skanda, குமரனாடல். குடைகவிக்க--குடைபிடிக்க, inf. To bear an umbrella. குடைக்காம்பு, s. See under காம்பு. குடைக்காரன், s. An umbrella-bearer. குடைநிழற்ற, inf. To afford shade--as an umbrella. குடைக்காளான், s. A kind of mushroom, ஓர்காளான். குடைக்கொள்ள, inf. [prov.] To rise in a body--as milk over the fire, as some cakes in frying, &c. 2. To rise or be puffed up--as a cloth, &c. 3. To capsize, to be upset--as a cart. குடைச்செவி, s. Ears pricked up and bent forward--as those of an elephant, tiger, horse, &c., in attack, surprise, or rage, குடைக்காது. குடைப்பனை, s. Talipot Fan-palm, தாலபத்திரப்பனை, Corypha umberaculifera, L. குடையாணி, s. A pin or nail with a round head--as distinguished from சடையாணி. வெண்கொற்றக்குடை, s. The white canopy of royalty--as a symbol of victory. 14)

kuṭai (p. 117) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To scoop; to work out a hollow; to bore a tube--as a turner, கடைய. 2. To perforate or from holes--as beetles in wood, துளைக்க. 3. To work in flowers, to gather honey, pollen, &c.-- as insects, தாதுகுடைய. 4. To wash, bathe in water; lit. to scoop out tank, குளிக்க. 5. To produce a tingling pain or itching in the body, ears, &c.; to work or gnaw--as worms; to cause smarting, &c.--as caustic on a sore, நோவுபடுத்த. 6. (fig.) To annoy, to cause great grief, heart-breaking, மனதைவருத்த. குடைந்தெடுக்க, inf. To excavate, to scoop out. குடைந்துபோட, inf. To eat--as a canker. 2. To scoop out; to hollow; to excavate. குடைந்துகொண்டிருக்க, inf. To ache in the limbs or bones. 2. To gnaw, corrode; to eat by degrees. குடைகரி, s. A concave piece of charcoal for melting very small piece gold or silver. குடைவண்டு, s. Perforating beetles, ஓர்வண்டு. காதுகுடைய--காதைக்குடைய, inf. To clear the ears of wax. 2. To have itching or tingling pain in the ears. நீர்குடைய--சுனைகுடைய, inf. To bathe. (p.) குடைதல், v. noun. Excavation, தோண் டல். 2. A washing, குளித்தல். குடைவு, s. Hollow, a cavity, குகை. 2. v. noun. kumiẕ (p. 123) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To grow into a conical shape; to be spherical, globular; to form--as bubbles, திரள. குமிழ்ப்பு, v. noun. Bubbling up, குமிழ்க்கை. 2. Momentary swelling at the root of the hairs of the body, accompanied with horripilation, புளகம். குமிழ்வண்டு, s. A perforating beetle. See குடைவண்டு. 8)

vēl (p. 402) s. Dart, spear, lance, javelin, கைவேல். 2. All kinds of armor, ஆயுதப் பொது. 3. [com. வேலமரம்.] A tree of three varieties. See கருவேல், குடைவேல், and வெள் வேள். 4. A bambû, , மூங்கில். ஆலும்வேலும்பல்லுக்குறுதி. The splint of the banyan and வேல் tree, gives strength to the teeth; see under நாலு. வேலம்பட்டை, s. The astringent bark of the வேல் tree, used in making arrack. வேலன், s. Kumara, the younger son of Siva, முருகன். 2. One possessed of a devil, வெறியாட்டாளன். (சது.) வேலனாடல், v. noun.
