aṟu (p. 33) கிறது, ந்தது, ம், அற, v. n. To be parted, detached, separated; to break as a rope, அறுபட. 2. To cease, become extinct, perish, end, vanish, அழிய. 3. To be decided, ended, தீர. (c.) அற, inf. [used adverbially.] With a verb it expresses; 1. Wholly, entirely, quite, முழுதும். 2. Intensely, excessively, மிகவும். 3. Negation, being without, as குற்றமற, without fault. அறச்செட்டுமுழுநஷ்டம். Selling things too dearly will cause entire loss; i. e. avarice causes loss. அறப்படித்தான். To be over-dried, over-boiled, over-heated. அறக்கூட்ட, inf. To sweep clean or thoroughly. அறக்கூர்மை, s. Excessive sharpness as of a writing style. அறச்சிவப்பு, s. Deep red, extremely red. அறச்சிறியது, appel. n. The smallest. அறப்பாடல், v. noun. [commonly, அறம்பாடல்.] Composing poetry containing imprecations or spells.--Note. Verses of this kind are supposed sometimes to be made without design, and thus to injure the maker and others. அறப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine thoroughly, sift. 2. To take measures to defeat, ruin or injure one by defamation. அறமிகுந்தால், v. part. At most, at the utmost, by any means, with the greatest effort. அறமிகுந்துவந்தாலும்வரட்டும். If it must come (if no effort will avert it) let it come. அறவிளக்க, inf. To polish thoroughly. அறவூத--அறவைக்க, inf. To refine metals by fire, புடமிட. அறாவிலை, s. An exorbitant price. அறுகுறை, s. Deficiency, what is wanted to complete a whole; [ex அறு, parted, et வாய், opening.] அறுவாய்நிறைந்தவயிர்மதி. The bright moon whose waning is restored. அற்றறுதி, s. A complete end, entire ruin. அற்றறுதிபற்றறுதியாய்விட்டது. All communion is withdrawn. அற்றான், s. A poor man, தரித் திரன், 2. A sage, முனிவன். அற்றுப்போக, inf. To be lost, to cease to be. தடையற, inf. [used adverbially.] Without impediment. அறவு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, extinction. 2. Parting, separation, breach. அறவுளி, s. Incantations performed over a sick person in order to restore him. 2. Cessation, end, முடிவு. அறுதல், v. noun. Finishing, liquidating a debt. 2. s. A broken thread, string, rope, bandage, &c. அறுந்திருப்பது. 3. A mean, despicable or faulty person, உதவாதவன் அந்த அறுதலையிங்கேவரவிடலாகாது, You must not allow that vagabond to be here. தாம்புமறுதல் தோண்டியும்பொத்தல். A broken rope and a leaky water-pot. அறுதலி, s. A widow, கைம்பெ ண்; [ex அறுதல், being plucked off (the marriage jewel), et இ, fem. termination; or அறு, torn off, et தலி, contracted from தாலி, the badge of marriage.] அறுதலிமகனுக்கங்கமெல்லாஞ்சேஷ்டை. The son of a widow is mischievous throughout his whole frame. அறுதி, v. noun. End, close, termination, முடிவு. 2. Decision, decisiveness, determination--as a decisive sale, entire renunciation of a title to landed property, தீர்ப்பு. 3. s. The purchaser's possession or title to property purchased, விற்கிரயச்சீட்டு. 4. Absence, non-existence, இல்லாமை. 5. Death, சாவு. அறுதியாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is settled, completed, ended. அறுதியிட்டுச்சொன்னான். He spoke decisively. நமக்குக்கிடைத்தது நமக்கறுதி. Thus much is realized and we shall not have to part with it. அந்தப்பழக்கத்தையறுதியாய்விட்டுவிட்டேன். I have relinquished that custom entirely. அறுதிக்கரை, s. The proper and just division or distribution of land. அறுதிச்சாதனம்--அறுதியுறுதி, s. A deed of transfer, அறுதிச்சீட்டு. அறுதிச்சொல், s. A decisive word or sentence. அறுதிப்பங்கு, s. āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

iṭi (p. 45) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pound, beat in a mortar, comminute, pulverize, reduce to flour, தூளாக்க. 2. To strike with the fist, a club or any thing blunt, slantingly, not with a direct blow, தாக்க. 3. To push, gore as a beast, to thrust, to butt--as an old calf in sucking, முட்ட. 4. To thunder, eject thunder-bolts, இடியிடிக்க. 5. To beat so as to break, bruise or batter to pieces, demolish, shatter, தகர்க்க. 6. To speak forcibly and emphatically, to use strong language in order to make an impression, to urge, insist upon with earnestness, உறுதிசொல்ல. 7. v. n. To throb, beat-as the head when aching: to beat, pant, palpitate, துடிக்க. 8. To strike--as a vessel against the shore--as a gun fired, &c., உதைக்க. 9. To sound, make a noise, ஒலிக்க. இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வாரையாரே கெடுக்குந் தகைமையவர்? Who can destroy those with whom are counsellors, that caution them faithfully? நீலனைமுழங்காலினாலிடித்துருட்டினான். He pushed Neelan with his knee, and rolled him over. (இராமா.) இடித்துரை, s. Affirmation, assurance, உறுதிச்சொல். இடிமரம், s. A pestle, உலக்கை. இடிமருந்து, s. Pulverized or comminuted medicine. 88)

iṭṭam (p. 45) --இஷ்டம், s. Voluntariness, freedom of choice, option, one's own pleasure, பிரியம். 2. Desire, wish, choice, opinion, approbation, விருப்பம். 3. [in astronomy.] The longitudinal difference between துருவம், and the end of a sign. இட்டகாமியம்--இஷ்டகாமியம், s. What delights, satisfies the mind. இட்டங்கட்ட--இட்டம்வைக்க, inf. To construct a plan, or lay down the situations of the stars, in entering on astrological calculations, இராசிநிலைவரைய. இட்டசட்டம்--இஷ்டசட்டம், s. Voluntariness, freedom from constraint, free choice, யதேச்சை. இஷ்டதேவதை, s. The family or guardian deity, தான்வழிபடுதெய்வம். Wils. p. 134. ISHTADEVATA. இஷ்டபிரசாதம், s. A gift from benevolence, free grace, கைம்மாறுவேண்டா க்கொடை 2. Free grace of God, தேவகிரு பை. 3. Boiled rice offered to the idols and eaten joyfully by the offerers, தேவ பிரசாதம். --Note. Among christians it is often used for the eucharist. இஷ்டபோகம், s. Enjoyment of wished for pleasure, gratification, விரும் பினபடியனுபவிக்கை. இஷ்டம்பண்ண, inf. iḷmai (p. 56) s. Youth, tenderness, immatureness, juvenility, infancy, இளமைப்பரு வம். 2. Indiscretion, immaturity of knowledge and intellect, illusion, உன்மத்தம். The opposite to இளமை is முதுமை. இளமையிலேபுண்ணியத்தோடேபழகு. Accustom thyself to virtue from thy youth. இளமையிற்கல். Learn from thy infancy. இளங்கதிர், s. Young ears of corn, பயிரினிளங்கதிர். 2. The early rays of the sun, இளங்கிரணம். 3. The sun early in the morning, உதையாதித்தன். இளங்கலையன், s. A species of paddy that ripens early, ஓர்நெல். இளங்கன்று, s. A young calf, சிறு கன்று. 2. A sapling, மரக்கன்று. இளங்காய், s. Green, unripe fruit, fruit just formed. இளங்கார், s. A kind of paddy which is reaped in the early part of the dark season, கார்நெல். இளங்கால், s. Gentle north wind. இளவாளிப்பு, v. noun. [prov.] Dampness, moisture. இளவுச்சம், s. [in astrology.] The situation of a planet a little before it reaches the meridian, உச்சத்திற்கணிமையா குகை. இளவுறை, s. Incipient or immature curds. இளவெந்நீர், s. Lukewarm water. இளவெயில், s. The early sunshine of the morning; also applied sometimes to the moderated rays of the evening, காலைவெயில். இளவெலும்பு, s. A tender, unhardened bone--as in children, முதிராவெலு ம்பு. இளவெழுத்து, s. An unformed hand-writing, the first writing of a child, படியாவெழுத்து. இளவேனில், s. The milder period of the hot season, including the months of April and May. See பருவகாலம். 6)

īṭu (p. 58) s. Equivalent, substitution, vicarious retribution, fruit, result, பிரதி. 2. Comparison, equal, match, ஒப்பு. 3. Reward, recompense, compensation, remuneration, satisfaction, கைம்மாறு. 4. Pawn, pledge, security, mortgage of land, அடகு. 5. (p.) Greatness, dignity, moral excellence, பெருமை. 6. Power, strength, robustness, வலி. 7. Ability, means, தகுதி. 8. Tendency, liability, exposure, obnoxiousness, being subject to, falling a prey, நேரா குகை. (சத. 63.) 9. Thickening, becoming slimy, குழைவு. அம்மாத்திரத்துக்கெனக்கீடில்லை. I have not the means to do so much. வினைக்கீடாகவனுபவமுண்டாம். Enjoyments and sufferings will accord with the deeds done within the periods of former births. அதற்கீடாகவிதுகொடுக்கிறேன். I give this for or instead of that. அவளுக்கவனீடல்ல. He is not a suitable match for her. ஈடழிய, inf. To suffer the loss of power, dignity, wealth, &c., to become poor, பெருமைகுன்ற. ஈடழிவு, v. noun. Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. Deliverance from a state of suffering, indigence, &c., உய்வு. 3. The marriage of a destitute girl under favorable auspices, கன்னிகையீடேற்றம். ஈட்டுக்கீடு, s. Like for like, retaliation, requital. கடையீடு, s. Ground the lowest in value and assessment. தலையீடு, s. A very fruitful soil, known to be such by its aspect. 6)

A style, எழுத்தாணி. கொல்லர்தெருவிலேயூசிமாறவந்தான். He is come to sell needles in the street of the smiths. ஊசிக்கண்--ஊசிக்காது--ஊசித்து ளை, s. The eye of a needle. ஊசிக்காந்தம், s. Loadstone, magnet, இரும்பிழுக்குங்காந்தக்கல். ஊசிக்கார், s. A kind of paddy, thin and long, ஓர்வகைநெல். ஊசிக்கால், s. Uprights in a building set on beams to support the ridge-beam, மச்சுக்கால். ஊசிக்கூடு, s. A needle-case, a tin-case. ஊசிப்பாலை, s. A species of பா லை plant. ஊசிப்புல், s. A kind of grass, ஓர்வகைப்புல். ஊசிமல்லிகை, s. A kind of jasmine, ஓர்வகைமல்லிகை. ஊசிமிடறு, s. A narrow throat like a needle, சிறுதொண்டை. ஊசிமிடறுந்தாழிவயிறும். A throat like a needle and a belly like a washerman's caldron--a glutton. ஊசிமுனை, s. The point of a needle, ஊசிநுனி. ஊசிமுனைநாட்டுமிடமாகிலும்நான்கொடுக்கிறதில் லை. I will give no ground, not even to fix the point of a needle upon. ஊசிமுனையிலேநிற்கிறான். He cannot endure to stay; lit. he stands on the point of a needle. ஊசியோட, inf. To pass the needle and thread through any thing, to sew. துன்னூசி, s. A nail which fastens the ploughshare to the plough. 36)

ūṭṭu (p. 69) கிறேன், ஊட்டினேன், வே ன், ஊட்ட, v. a. To put into the mouth-as of children, sick people, &c., உண்பிக்க. 2. To deal out food--as a wife to her husband, &c., to impart, cherish, உணவுகொடுக்க. 3. To entertain a guest, &c., விருந்திட. 4. To saturate, infuse, steep, impregnate, tincture, புகைமுதலியவூட்ட. 5. To cause to experience joys and sufferings--as the fruits of action, இன்பதுன்பங்களையருத்த. 6. (fig.) To instil--as knowledge, &c., நினைப்பூட்ட. (p.) 7. v. n. To suck--as the young of beasts, கன்றூட்ட. அவரைவைத்துக்கொண்டூட்டுகிறார்கள். They entertain him with great attention--an expression of envy. இரண்டாட்டிலூட்டினகுட்டியானான். He is like a kid that sucks two she-goats; i. e. he gets nothing by serving two masters. கன்றூட்டுகிறது. The calf sucks. ஊட்டக்கொடுக்க, inf. To let the calf suck (the act of the cow). ஊட்டவிட, inf. To lead the calf to the cow to suck. ஊட்டுந்தாய், s. a foster-mother, செவிலி. See தாய். பிழைப்பூட்ட, inf. To reanimate, restore to life. 2. To furnish means of sustenance. இந்தவைத்தியன்போகுமுயிரைப்பிழைப்பூட்டினான். The doctor has restored him to life. நினைப்பூட்ட, inf. To remind, to put in mind. நினைப்பூட்டி, s. A monument. ஊட்டு, v. noun. Feeding, உண் பிக்கை. 2. s. A morsel, or portion given to a child, a sick person, &c., கவளம். ஊட்டுக்கன்று, s. A sucking calf. ஊட்டுமறந்தகன்று, s. A weaned calf. ஊட்டுணை, s. Shaking of the head caused by old age, தலையாட்டம். (Rott.) *ஊணம், s. The country of the Huns or barbarians, ஓர்தேயம். Wils. p. 977. HOONA. ஊணர், s.
