etir (p. 73) s. That which is opposite, in front, before, in presence of, over against, முன். 2. That which is opposed, is adverse, hostile, முரண். 3. Similitude, comparison, ஒப்பு. 4. Futurity, வருங்காலம். 5. Rivalry, competition, எதிரிடை. எதிரதுபோற்றல், v. noun. An author's adopting what is authorized by good usage though modern. See உத்தி. எதிரறை, s. Counter magic, magic resorted to in retaliation, sorcery, &c., எதிரேவல். எதிரொலி, s. Echo, reverberation of sound. பிரதித்தொனி. எதிரொலித்தல், v. noun. Echoing, resounding. எதிர்கொள்ள--எதிர்கொண்டழைக் க, inf. To meet and receive a guest, a great person, a wedding party, &c., coming to one's house, சந்திக்க. எதிர்கோள், v. noun. Meeting in the way, meeting or receiving a person, எதிர்கொள்ளுகை. விருந்தெதிர்கோடல், v. noun. Inviting guests, or devotees, religious mendicants, &c.--one of the duties enjoined on a householder as the condition of his own participation of the good things of providence. See இல், house. (சிலப்பதிகாரம்.) எதிர்க்கடை, s. An opposition bazaar. கீரைக்கடைக்குமெதிர்க்கடைவேண்டும். An opposition stall is necessary even among green grocers. [prov.] எதிர்க்கட்சி, s. An opposite party, எதிரானகூட்டம். எதிர்க்காற்று, s. Contrary wind. எதிர்க்கை, s. A slanting timber forming a continued line with the ridge and uniting in an angle formed by the slanting hip-rafters on either end of a hipped or bungalo roof. எதிர்ச்சாட்சி, s. Counter testimony; a witness brought to disprove previous testimony, மாறானசாட்சி. எதிர்ச்செட்டு, s. Competition in trade, ஒருவன்விற்பதற்குமாறாகவிற்கை. 2. [prov.] Trading at second hand, buying and selling again directly at a small profit. எதிர்நடை, s. The act of doing perversely. 2. Opposite course. எதிர்நடைக்கணக்கு, s. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. An arrangement of a series of verbs, &c. in the contrary order to that in which their nouns occur. See முறை நிரனிறை. எதிர்நிலை, s. Resistance, opposition, எதிர்நிற்கை. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை, s. [in amatory verse.] The rule for elucidating a circumstance by the opposite case, contrast. எதிர்நிற்க, inf. To stand before one, முன்னிற்க. 2. To oppose, to be perverse, or contumacious, மாறுபட்டுநிற்க. 3. To stand against, withstand, cope with, போர்செய்ய. எதிர்நோக்குநட்சத்திரம், s. A nutchattra whose influence has respect to movements and interests in the different points of the compass, not an astrological, but a common phrase; the same as எதிர்நாள், or more properly, பக்கநாள். எதிர்பார்க்க, inf. To wait for an expected person, வரவுபார்த்திருக்க. 2. To expect, to look forward, காத்திருக்க. இருகாரியத்திற்கெதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. To hope for a thing, to be in expectation of it. எதிர்போக, inf. To go against, oppose, meet as an army, assail, எதிராய் போக. எதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet as in the way, சந்திக்க. 2. To happen, occur, தோன்ற. எதிர்ப்படுத்த, inf. To confront, எதிராக்க. 2. To stir up strife, cause opposition, பகையாக்க. எதிர்ப்பாடு, v. noun. Meeting, எதிர் ப்படுகை. எதிர்ப்பாய்ச்சல், s. A contrary current; leaping in a contrary direction. எதிர்மறை, s. [in grammar.] The negative forms of expression, மறை--அ, அந், ந், கி, கு, வி, &c. are Sanscrit prefixes expressing negation. எதிர்மறைவினை, s. [in grammar.] The negative verb, மறைவினை. எதிர்முகம், s. catti (p. 159) s. Ability, power, strength, energy, prowess, வல்லமை. 2. The female energy or active power of deity in all the operations of creating, preserving, destroying, &c., பராசத்திமுதலியன.--Note. Each form of the deity is represented as having a distinct சத்தி described as his consort. 3. A name of பார்வதி. 4. The female organ, as the counter part of the phallic emblem of Siva, ஆவிடையார். 5. An iron spear or dart, கைவேல். W. p. 824. SAKTI. 6. Sulphur, கந்தகம். 7. Soap, சவக்காரம். 8. Bismuth pyrites, நிமிளை. 9. [for சத்திரம்.] An umbrella or parasol, குடை. 1. To be wanting in strength. சத்திசெலுத்த, inf. To authorise. (p.) சத்திபூசை, s. The puja-worship of the வாமர் sect, performed in secret with raw flesh, ardent spirit, &c. The object of worship being the privities of a naked woman, in personification of the fecundating and operative principle of deity in nature. சத்தியுள்ளவன், s. A rich man, a man of influence. (c.) சத்தியில்லாதவன், s. An incompetent person, a weak person. (c.) சத்திவிளங்க, inf. [loc.] To become manifest as power, a miraculous power. அருட்சத்தி, s. [in சிவஞானபோதம்.] The active energy of deity which is said to enlighten the soul and to be a source of benefit to all animated beings. சிவசத்தி, s. The third day of the moon, either in its increase or decrease, மூன்றாந்திதி. திரிதீர்க்கம், s. One of the ten points in the horoscope of the bride and the bridegroom. See தசப்பொருத்தம். திரிதேகம், s. Three kinds of bodies. See சரீரத்திரயம். திரிதோஷம், s. The three humors of the body, முப்பிணி. 2. Vitiation of the three humors, as the cause of diseases, ஓர்நோய். திரிதோஷசன்னி, s. A fit from the above disease. திரித்துவம்--திரியத்துவம், s. (Chris. usage.) The Trinity. திரிநேத்திரன், s. Siva, the three-eyed, சிவன். Compare முக்கண்ணன். திரிபங்கி, s. Among Vedantists சித்து, அசித்து, ஈச்சுரன். திரிபதகை, s. The Ganges, fancied to run through three worlds கங்கை. திரிபதாகி, s. One of the மிறைக்கவி, or curious poems. திரிபதாகை, s. A mode of using the hands in dancing. See காலட்சணம். திரிபலம்--திரிபலை, s. The three Myrobalan or medicinal fruits, often used in Indian medicines, 1. கடுக்காய், gallnuts, Terminalia chebula; 2. நெல்லிக் காய், Phyllanthus emblica; 3. தான்றிக்காய், Terminalia bellerica. திரிபலையேனாதி, s. An electuary compounded of the three fruits and other ingredients. திரிபழுகம், s. The three delicacies, milk, பால்; clarified butter, நெய்; and honey, தேன். திரிபாகி, s. One of the மிறைக்கவி, a curious poem in which a word of three letters when taken regularity gives one meaning, and when the first, second or third letter is taken away will give in each case a different meaning. திரிபுசம், s. Triangle. (Sa. Tribhaja.) திரிபுடி, s. The three qualities, 1. ஞாதுரு, soul, ஆன்மா; 2. ஞானம், wisdom. knowledge, அறிவு; 3. ஞேயம், that which is known, அறியப்படுபொருள். திரிபுடை--திரிபுடைதாளம், s. [in mythol.] The three cities, or castles, severally of iron, silver, and gold, floating in the sky one above another; destroyed by Siva for embracing the Jaina tenets, முப்புரம். The chiefs of the castles were, கமலன், கமலாட் சன், and விச்சுவமாலி. திரிபுரசுந்தரி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி. திரிபுரதகனன், s. (St.) Siva, சிவன்; [ex தகனன், who burnt.] திரிபுரமல்லிகை, s. (St.) A medicinal plant, apparently a kind of jasmine. திரிபுரமெரித்தான், appel. n. Siva, who burnt and destroyed திரிபுரம், சிவன். 2. A tree, நொச்சி, Vitex. 3. The மாவிலிங்கு tree. திரிபுராந்தகன், s. Siva, as destroyer of the three cities, சிவன்; [ex அந்தகன்.] திரிபுரி, s. A plant. See சாரணை. (R.) திரிபுரை, s. Three kinds of medicinal roots, 1. திப்பிலிமூலம், of long-pepper; 2. சித்திரமூலம், of plumbago; 3. கண்டு மூலம், of a medicinal plant. திரியத்துவம்--திரியேகத்துவம்--திரியே கம். s. (Chris. usage.) Triune, trinity. திரியம்பகன், s. Siva, as the threeeyed, சிவன்; sometimes Vishnu; [ex அம் பகம், eye.] திரியவத்தை--திரியாவஸ்தை, The Three states of the mind. See அவத்தை. திரியாங்கம், s. A calendar embracing three parts or members, out of the five given in the native calendars; viz.: திதி, வாரம், நட்சத்திரம். See பஞ்சாங்கம். திருயேககடவுள்--திரியேகன், s. (Chris. usage.) God the Father, the son, and the Holy Ghost, which three are one. திரிலிங்கம், s. A mode of using the hands in dancing. (See காலட்சணம்.) 2.
