ācciramam (p. 37) s. Hermitage, the residence of an ascetic, முனிவரிருப்பிடம். 2. Religious condition as prescribed especially for the Brahmans, including four degrees or orders, நிலை; viz.: 1. பிரமசாரி யாச்சிரமம், the state or condition of a bachelor, who, from the time of his investment with the sacred cord, is required to tend the sacred fires and to follow his studies under or in the presence of his preceptor. 2. கிரகஸ்தாச்சிரமம், the state of a house-holder, who, from his marriage, must strictly observe his religious duties, maintain the sacred fires, and liberally practise hospitality for the support of the other three orders. 3. வானப்பிரஸ்தாச் சிரமம், the state of an anchorite or recluse, who, with or without his wife, relinquishes domestic life, retires to the desert feeding on leaves, roots and fruits, or on the hospitality of the second order, and continues to perform his daily rites. 4. சன்னியாசியாச்சிரமம், the state of a religious mendicant who performs no rite whatever and lives only on alms, sometimes appearing in a state of nudity. [prov.] To wait on the dying, affording aid, performing appropriate ceremonies, &c. சாக்குருவி--சாகுருவி, s. A night-bird, sometimes a screech owl, whose hoot is supposed to portend death. சாக்குறி, s. Omens or presages of death. சாச்சடங்கு, s. Funeral ceremonies performed within the first week, especially, cooking and taking congy on the third day, and rice on the eighth.--Note. In some places food is sent by the relatives for three days. சாசங்காரம், s. The completing of an equation. சாபலம், s. [in astron.] Equation to the centre for any given time. சாபறை--சாப்பறை, s. A kind of drum for funerals. சாபிள்ளை, s. A still-born child. (c.) சாமுகுர்த்தம், s. [in astrol.] The முகு ர்த்தம் time, when several of the planets are in unfavorable situations. சாமூஞ்சி, s. A dismal, ghastly countenance, a death-like look. சாமூஞ்சிபட, inf. To be ghastly, as the face of a sick person. சாமேளம், s. A funeral-drum; the mode of beating a drum for a funeral. சாவறுதி, s. The point of death, the last extremity. 2. [prov.] Slightness, want of force and vigour; [ex அறுதி.] சன்னியாசம்பண்ண, inf. To renounce social or secular life for the wandering life of the ascetic. 2. caṉṉiyāci (p. 174) s. A Hindu ascetic, a wandering devotee who has renounced social life, with all its enjoyments and attachments, subjected his passions, and lives on what is given him unasked. He remains in a village only one day, in a town not more than three days, and in a city only five; lest his mind become secularized. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. [among R. Catho.] A monk; [ex சன்னியாசம்.]--Note. There are two orders of சன்னியாசி, namely. 1. ஏகதண்டசன்னியாசி, one who carries a single staff, and is of the Smriti sect; 2. திரிதண்ட சன்னியாசி, one who carries three staves tied together, and is a worshipper of Vishnu. சா சாவாக்கியம், s. A Table of equations. சாவிசேஷம், s. Tidings of death. சாவிளைவு, s. A good crop as a prognostic to one's death; spoken after the occurrence. சாவீடு, s. A funeral-house. சாவெடி, s. [prov. சாவெடில்.] The smell of a dead body, பிணநாற்றம். சாவெழுத்து, s. Fatal letters; a class of letters, which it is supposed may be so placed in an invocation, as to effect the death of a person to whom the verse is addressed--intentionally or unintentionally. See எழுத்துத்தானம். சாவோலை, s. An ola-letter burnt at the end, for a funeral mark, giving notice of death. உற்கிரமச்சா, s. The versed sine. The wife is dead. சமுசாரத்திலடிபட்டவன். One who has experienced the troubles, accompanying the matrimonial state, and house-keeping. சமுசாரகிருத்தியம், s. House-hold duties. சமுசாரக்காரன், s. A married man. 2. A man who has children. சமுசாரசன்னியாசம், s. Renunciation of matrimonial life, celibacy. சமுசாரத்தொல்லை, s. Cares and vexation of a family. சமுசாரநாசம், s. The ruin of a family. 2. (p.) Annihilation of the passions; overcoming earthly attachments--as an ascetic. சமுசாரபாரம், s. The burden and responsibility of a family, &c.--as குடும்ப பாரம். சமுசாரமார்க்கம், s. Conjugal life; the family state, as distinguished from the state of the bachelor or ascetic. 2. Domestic duties. (c.) சமுசாரம்நடத்த--சமுசாரம்பண்ண, inf. To manage a family. சமுசாரவாளி, s. cā (p. 174) கிறேன், செத்தேன், வேன், சாக, v. n. To die, இறக்க. 2. To perish or be injured --as grain--, &c., கெட. 3. To dry up--as a sore, &c., காய்ந்துபோக. (Sa. Jya.)--Note. சாவ and sometimes சா are used in poetry for சாக. and சாம் for சாகும். அவள்பேரிலேசாகிறான். He is dying (from love) for her. சாவதுபிழைப்பதாயிருக்கிறான். He is dangerously ill. செத்துப்பிழைத்தாயா. Are you just come to life? Spoken of one absent, or inattentive who afterwards asks for an explanation. செத்தவீடு. A funeral-house. கால்கைசெத்துப்போயின. The arms and legs are wearied by walking, &c. சாகக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lose a near relative, to be bereft--used chiefly in expressions of regret, and in lamentations for the dead. சாகக்கொல்ல, inf. To kill, to kill outright. 2. (fig.) To harass, to torment. சாகத்துணிந்தவன், s. One who voluntarily braves death in battle, or by any desperate act. சன்னியாசிகள்பந்தி, s. [R. Catho. usage.] The order of monks. பாலசன்னியாசி, s. One who devotes himself from his youth to ascetic life, lives in celibacy, &c., 2. The pupil of a முனி, muni, முனிசீஷன். 5) *
