A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. The nectarine principle in the head or brain from which the silent, motionless devotee is supposed to obtain nutrition, support and enjoyment, when living without external food. அமுதபுட்பம், s. A creeping plant, சிறுகுறிஞ்சா, Periploca, L. அமுதப்பார்வை, s. A favorable or propitious look. as of a lady towards her admirer, குளிர்ந்தபார்வை. அமதமேந்தல், v. noun. Giving food to ascetics and other virtuous persons, guests, as one of the nine kinds of புண்ணியம், and of the sixteen உபசாரம். அமுதயோகம், s. [in astrology.] The auspicious conjunction of a certain day of the week, phase of the moon and lunar constellation. See யோகம். அமுதர், s. Celestials, வானோர். 2. Herdsmen, இடையர். (p.) அமுதவல்லி, s. A creeper, as சீந்தில். அமுதவெழுத்து, s. Letters deemed propitious and proper to begin a poem, or to be in other important places. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. Worldly pomp, vanity, secularity--as opposed to the feelings and practice of the ascetic, உலக மயக்கம். உலகபாந்தவன், s. The sun, சூரிய ன். (p.) உலகப்பரப்பு, s. The world considered in its expanse, உலகவிரிவு. உலகப்பற்று, s. Attachment to the world, mundane, or sensual attachments, உலகபந்தம். உலகப்புரட்டன், s. One who holds opinions and acts contrary to the sentiments of the wise. உலகமலையாமை, s. One of the ten அழகு or beauties of language, classical usage, &c. See அழகு. உலகமலைவு, s. [in rhetoric.] Incongruity, impossibility, absurdity--as அலை கடல்களேழுந்தூர்த்தந்தாத்தினூடே--மலையனையமால் யானையோட்டிக்--கலவாரை--நீறுசெய்துவையநெ டுங்குடைக்கீழ்வாழ்வித்தான்--மாறாச்சீர்வையையார் கோன், the Pandian king of Madura of endless fame filled the seven seas with sand, drove his elephant through the sky, reduced his enemies to ashes, and brought the whole world under his sway. (அலங்.) உலகமாதா, s. The mother of the world--applied to Sarasvati, சரச்சுவதி. 2. Lukshmi, இலக்குமி. 3. Parvati, பார்ப் பதி. (p.) உலகமீன்றாள், s. Parvati the wife of Siva, the mother of the world, பார்ப்பதி. (p.) உலகமுண்டோன், s. Vishnu the world-eater, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகரட்சகன், s. The saviour or protector of the world. உலகரட்சணியம்--உலகரட்சை, s. Protection, or salvation of the world. உலகர், s. Worldlings, those engrossed by worldly pursuits. (தீ. 335.) (p.) உலகவழக்கம், s. The customs of the world. உலகவாசை--உலகவாஞ்சை, s. Ardent love of worldly, or sensual enjoyments, உலகவிருப்பம். உலகவாழ்வு, s. Temporal prosperity. உலகளந்தோன், s. Vishnu the measurer of the world, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகாசாரம், s. Relative duties, the customs, rites or duties to be performed according to the country, caste, rank, relation, &c., of persons respectively. உலகாயிதம், s. A system of materialism, or atheistical epicurianism, அறுசமயங்களிலொன்று. See சமயம். (p.) உலகாள--உலகோம்ப, inf. To govern, protect his country--as one of the duties of a king. உலகாள்வோன், s. A monarch, உலோகாதிபன். உலகியல், s. The customs of the world, உலகநடை. உலகோம்பல், v. noun. Preserving the world--one of the six occupations of kings. See தொழில். உலகோற்பத்தி, s. The origin, or development of worlds. மேலுலகு, s. The upper worlds, which are seven in number, viz.: பூலோ கம், புவர்லோகம், சுவர்லோகம், மகாலோகம், சன லோகம், தபோலோகம், சத்தியலோகம். கீழுலகு, s. The lower worlds or regions; which are also seven, அதலம், விதலம், சுதலம், தராதலம், இரசாதலம், மகாதலம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகம், s. The three worlds, viz.: சொர்க்கம், மத்தியம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகாளி, s. God, (lit.) the sovereign of the three worlds, கடவுள். (p.) மூவுலகுணர்ந்தோன், s. He who comprehends the three worlds, God, க டவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். (p.) மூவுலகேந்தி, s. etukai (p. 73) s. Initial rhyme, commonly occurring in the second letter of every line in the stanza. (See தொடை.) 2. [vul.] (fig.) Agreement, union, consonance, similarity, பொருத்தம். (p.) தலையாகெதுகை, s. In rhyme, similarity of the first class in which all the letters except the initial of the first foot in each line through the stanza are the same--as சொற்போர்புரிவர்நான்மறை யாறங்கமுணர்ந்ததொழுகுலத்தோர், விற்போர்புரிவர் நெடியசிலையிராமனனையவிறல்வேந்தர், பொற்போர் புரிவர் பிறர்பொருளுந்தம்போற் பேணிப்புரிவணிகர், நெற்போர்புரிவரந்நகரில்வேளாண்குலத்து நெறியி னரே. இடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of a medial kind in which the second letter only ryhmes--as அகரமுதலவெழுத் தெல்லாமாதி, பகவன்முதற்றேயுலகு. கடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of an inferior order including every kind except the two given above. ஆசெதுகை, s. An exception to the general rule of எதுகை; i. e. when the second letter of the first line is ய, ர, ல, or ழ, it may be omitted in the following lines when necessary. வழியெதுகை, s. The agreement of the second and third letters in the first, second, and sometimes the third feet in every line through the stanza. நெடிலெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the long consonants in a poem--as ஆவாவென்றேயஞ்சினராழ்ந்தாரொருசாரார், கூகூ வென்றேகூவிளிகொண்டாரொருசாரார், மாமாவென் றேமாய்ந்தனர்நீந்தாரொருசாரார், ஏகீர்நாகீரென்செய் துமென்றாரொருசாரார். இனவெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the same class of consonants in a poem. It consists of three kinds: 1. வல்லின வெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the வல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். தக்கார்தகவிலரென்பதவரவ ரெச்சத்தாற்காணப்படும். 2. மெல்லினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the மெல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். அன்பீனுமார்வமுடைமையதுவீனுநண்பென் னுநாடாச்சிறப்பு. 3. இடையினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the இடையினம் consonants, உ-ம். எல்லா விளக்கும் விளக்கல்ல சான்றோர்க்குப் பொய்யாவிளக்கேவிளக்கு. 51) *

ōngku (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓங்கினேன், வேன், ஓங்க, v. a. To lift up, raise the arm, a weapon, a pestle, கையோங்க. 2. v. n. To grow high, rise above others, above the level; to be lofty--as a building, a mountain, a tree; to shoot forth, rise--as a flame, உயர. 3. To mount, soar, எழும்ப. 4. To rise to the surface--as planted rice when flooded, எழ. 5. To be exalted, dignified, eminent, பெருமையுற. 6. To improve, increase in wealth, renown, learning, &c.; to flourish, prosper, increase in size, &c., அதிகரிக்க. ஓங்கியவொள்வாள். The up-lifted glittering sword. நெஞ்சோங்குபரத்துற்றோர். Those whose hearts are placed on the Supreme God. (நன்னெறி.) துக்கசமுத்திரத்திலேயோங்குகிறான். He rises above the waves in the sea of sorrow. ஓங்கிப்பார்க்க, inf. To stand on tip-toe and look. ஓங்கிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To rise and catch, either by becoming erect, or standing on tip-toe, or jumping. ஓங்கியசெல்வம், s. Abounding wealth. பிறன்மனைநோக்காதபேராண்மைசான்றோர்க்கறனொ ன்றோவான்றவொழுக்கு. The magnanimity which disdains to look on another's wife, is it an act of propriety merely? It is exalted virtue. (குறள்.) 47)

cāṉṟvr (p. 181) --சான்றோர், s. The learned, the great, அறிஞர்; [ex சால், v.] (p.) சான்றோரென்கை யீன்றோர்க்கழகு. Calling a child learned is an honor to its parents. சி சிகரிநிம்பம், s. Bead tree, மலைவேம்பு. 20)
