cāmpl (p. 177) v. noun. (substantively.) Ashes, அடலை நீறு. (c.) 2. (நிக.) A faded flower, பழம்பூ; [ex சாம்பு. v.] 3. (a corruption of சம்பு.) The நாவல் tree. (M. Dic.) சாம்பலடிப்பெருநாள், s. (Rom. usage.) Ash-wednesday; also Shrove-tuesday. சாம்பலாண்டி, s. A religious mendicant whose whole body is smeared with ashes. 2. (fig.) A clown. சாம்பற்குண்டி, s. [vul.] A sloven, a mean person. சாம்பற்குதிரை, s. A grey horse. (c.) சாம்பலிட்டுவிளக்க, inf. To clean or scour with ashes--as a vessel, brass plate, &c. சாம்பற்குளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To immerse itself in ashes, as a brooding hen; to bathe in ashes. சாம்பல்வண்ணம்--சாம்பனிறம், s. Ashcolor, grey color. சாம்பல்வாழை--சாம்பல்மொந்தன், s. [loc.] An ash-colored plantain tree. சாம்பற்பூக்க, inf. To form, as ashes on coals, or the appearance of ashes on fruits, or on the body; to grow ashy. (c.) சாம்பற்பூசுணிக்காய், s. A kind of pumpkin. nraiyāṉ (p. 270) s. A heron, செங்காநாரை. 2. [prov.] A small insignificant thing as a child, &c., சின்னது. [in derision.] நரையான்கட்லேயகப்பட்டான். He was bstructed by the flight of a heron.--Note. The flight of a heron from right to left across the path of one setting out on a journey is thought inauspicious. சாம்பல்கரையான், s. As சாம்பனாரை. 106)

nārai (p. 275) s. A kind of water bird, the heron, cormorant, strok, ஓர்நீர்ப்பறவை. See கருநாரை, செங்காநாரை, நத்தைகுத்திநாரை, வெண் ணாரை, or வெள்ளைநாரை, பெருநாரை, சாம்பனாரை, கொய்யடிநாரை. (c.) நாரைப்பசு, s. A tall meagre cow, ஓர்வகைப்பசு. (R.) 13)
