Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. Doubt, hesitancy uncertainty, conjecture, சமுசயம். அனுமானப்பிரமாணம், s. one of the eight laws of evidence, inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணத்தைக்காட்டுவது. அனுமானிக்க, inf. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

ācaṉam (p. 36) s. A seat, any thing to sit on--whether a mat placed on the ground or a raised seat, பீடம். 2. A tiger's skin, a plat of sacrificial or other prescribed article on which the worshipper squats, or the more advanced devotee sits for the performance of his worship, புலித் தோன்முதலியவாசனம். 3. An alter on which sacrifices, oblations, &c. are offered, regarded as the seat of the divinity, பலிபீடம். 4. A throne, சிங்காசனம். 5. The fundament, posteriors, seat, பிட்டம். 6. Any of the prescribed postures of the யோகி, or silent devotee, அஷ்டயோகத்திலொன்று, of which are nine attributes. 1. சுவத்திகம். 2. கோமுகம். 3. பதுமம். 4. வீரம். 5. கேசரி. 6. பத்திரம். 7. முத்தம். 8. மயூரம். 9. சுகம். 7. āṇ (p. 38) s. A male of the human race, or inferior animals, ஆண்பாற்பொது. 2. The male of human species, man, ஆண்மகன். 3. (p.) Manliness, eminence, superiority, தலைமை. ஆணங்காய், s. The branched spadix of the flowers of a palm tree, ஆண் பனையின்காய். (c.) ஆணரி, s. Male jackall, ஓரி. ஆணாப்பிறந்தவன், s. A male, one born a male. ஆணாள், s. [in astrology.] The male division of the lunar asterisms, observed in horoscopes, ஆண் நட்சத்திரம். ஆணெழுத்து, s. A short vowel, or a short animated consonant, குற்றெழுத்து. ஆண்கிரகம், s. In the Hindu system of astrology, any one of the three planets, Mars, Jupiter, or the Sun, ஆண் கோள். ஆண்குறி, s. Membrum virile. ஆண்கூத்து, s. A male character in the drama. ஆண்டகை, s. A king, அரசன். 2. A manly person, சிறந்தோன்; [ex தகை, befitting.] (p.) ஆண்டகைமை, s. Manliness, fortitude, inherent bravery, வீரம். (p.) ஆண்டொழில், s. Exploits, mighty deeds, heroism. (p.) ஆண்டொழின்மைந்தன், s. Arjuna, அருச்சுனன். (p.) ஆண்பறவை, s. The cock, the male of any bird, சேவல். ஆண்பனை, s. The male of the palmyra tree. ஆண்பன்றி, s. A hog, boar, ஒருத் தல். ஆண்பாடு, s. The male energy, ஆண்குணம். 2. Man's affair or work. ஆண்பாடுபெண்பாடுபட்டது. The man and woman labored. ஆண்பால், [in grammar.] The masculine gender, male sex, புல்லிங்கம். 2. Masculine qualities, ஆண்டன்மை; [ex பால், class, nature.] (p.) ஆண்பிள்ளை, s. A male child, a boy, a person of the male sex in general. 2. A man of priority, a head-man. 3. A clever man, or a man of capacity. ஆண்பிள்ளைசிங்கம், s. A bold, heroic, intrepid man, one who does bravely, signalizes himself--a term of applause, வீரன். ஆண்மகன், s. An eminent man. 2. A man. 3. A husband. 4. A son. (p.) ஆண்மரம், s. The class of trees whose interior is hard, solid and suitable for timber, உள்வயிரமுள்ளமரம். 2. The செம்மரம். ஆண்மாரி, s. A masculine woman, a scold, a termagant, an amazon. ஆண்மை, s. Manliness, courage, fortitude, intrepidity, energy, manhood. 2. Strength, vigor, virility. 3. (p.) Truth, certainty. நானென்றவாண்மை. Presumption, selfconceitedness, pedantry. ஆண்வழி, s. Family descent in the male line, any peculiarity in the male line. 26)

āḷi (p. 43) s. The lion as the king of beasts, சிங்கம். 2. A governor, a master, ஆள்வோன். 3. Leo the zodiacal sign, சிங்க விராசி. 4. A fabulous animal (the யாளி.) like a lion, but with a proboscis as an elephant. 5. A kind of seed, ஆளிவிதை. 6. An embankment, or boundary for keeping up water, செய்கரை. 7. Bank in general, கரைப்பொது. 8. [vul.] An oyster, மட்டி. 9. An appellative affix, mas. or fem. joined to nouns--implying a ruler, owner, manager, master, one who owns a thing, possesses a quality, &c.,--as from பகை is formed, பகையாளி. ஆளியூர்தி, s. Kali and Durga, so called because conveyed on an animal of the lion kind. 57)

intiriyam (p. 46) s. [contracted into இந்தியம்.] An organ of sense, or organ of the body, பொறி; [ex இந்திர, the soul or self, or what is with difficulty restrained by the soul.] There are three kinds of இந்திரியம், or sensual organs; viz.: those of perception, those of action and the intellectual organs. Wils. p. 133. INDRYA. I. ஞானேந்திரியம், the organs of sense or perception are five; viz.: 1. சக்கு, சட்சு or கண், the eye, the organ of sight having உருவம் or visible forms as its object. 2. சோத்திரம் or செவி, the ear, the organ of hearing, having சத்தம், (sound) as its object. 3. ஆக்கிராணம் or மூக்கு, the nose, the organ of smelling, having கந்தம், (odors) as its object. 4. சிங்குவை or நா, the tongue, the organ of tasting, having இரசம், (flavors) as its object. 5. தொக்கு or துவக்கு or உடம்பு, the surface of the body, the organ of feeling, having பரிசம், (touch or contact) as its object. II. கன்மேந்திரியம், or organs of actions are five; viz.: 1. வாக்கு, the mouth or organ of speech. 2. பாதம், the feet. 3. பாணி, the hands. 4. பாயுரு, the anus. 5. உபஸ்தம், the genitals. III. அந்தக்கரணம் or அந்தரிந்திரியம், the intellectual powers are four; viz.: 1. மனம், the organ of thought or perception, emotion. 2. புத்தி, understanding, conception, reason, intellect--the organs of examination, investigation, reflection, comparison, device, experiment. 3. ஆங்காரம், emotion, self-importance, inflation, presumption, energy, impulse, the organ of excitement, resolution, effort, &c. 4. சித்தம், volition, will, purpose, determination, that power of the mind which leads to the accomplishment of objects. 2. The sperm, seed of men, விந்து. இந்திரியகோசரம், s. Perceptibleness, capability of being determined by the senses, இந்திரியத்துக்குவிஷயமாகுகை. Wils. p. 132. INDRYAGOCHARA. இந்திரியக்காட்சி--இந்திரியப்பிரத் தியட்சம், s. Evidence of the senses. இந்திரியத்துவாரம், s. The inlets or avenues of the senses--as means of perception. இந்திரியநிக்கிரகம், s. The subjugation of the passions, இந்திரியமடக்குகை. இந்திரியநுகர்ச்சி, s. Enjoyment of sense, இந்திரியானுபவம். இந்திரியாசங்கம், s. Stoicism, detachment from sensual objects, விஷயவெ றுப்பு; [ex ஆசங்கை, doubt.] 18) *

iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Condensed mercury, சூதக்கட்டு. இரசக்கிணறு--இரசக்குழி, s. A pit or mine where quick-silver is obtained. இரசக்குடுக்கை, s. A little bottle of mercury. இரசசிந்தூரம், s. Red precipitate of mercury. இரசஞ்சுத்திபண்ண, inf. To purify quick-silver. இரசதாது, s. Quick-silver, சூதம். Wils. p. 698. RASAD'HATU. இரசதாளி, s. A species of plantain, கப்பல்வாழை. இரசத்தைக்கட்டிப்புடமிட, inf. To reduce mercury by decoction. இரசத்தைப்பஸ்மமாக்க, inf. To reduce mercury into powder. இரசநாதம், s. Quick-silver, இர சம். Wils. p. 698. RASANATHA. இரசபஸ்பம்--இரசபஸ்மம்--இரச பற்பம், s. Mercury reduced to white powder, a kind of muriate of mercury or calcinated mercury, சூதபஸ்பம். Wils. p. 698. RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. [improp. இதரைவாழை.] A species of plantain, பேயன்வாழை. இரசவைப்பு, s. Any preparation from mercury--as a muriate, sulphate, &c., an amalgam. இரசனை, s. Flavor, deliciousness, sweetness, delicacy, சுவை. 2. The tongue, நாக்கு. 3. Juice, sap, essence, சாறு. இரசாதிபதி--இரசாதிபன், s. [in astrology.] The sun or one of the planets presiding over fruits, vegetables, &c., for the given years, இரசவஸ்துகட்கதி காரியாங்கிரகம். இரசாபாசம், A loss of flavor, or of juice. இரசேந்திரம், s. A prince, king's son. இராசகோலம், s. Royal attire, princely bearing. இராசகோழை, s. A violent disease in which the phlegmatic humor is supposed to be prevalent, attended with bloody expectoration, ஓர்நோய். இராசசங்கம்--இராசசபை, s. The royal assembly, senators, courtiers. Wils. p. 72. RAJASAB'HA. இராசசமுகத்தார், s. An assembly of state, assembly in the presence of a king. இராசசின்னம், s. Ensigns of royalty, regalia, the apparatus of a coronation--there are twenty-one of them, viz.: 1. முடி, crown. 2. குடை, the umbrella denoting safety and protection. 3. கவரி, hair-fans. 4. தோட்டி, elephanthook. 5. முரசு, drums. 6. சக்கரம், the discus weapon. 7. யானை, elephants. 8. கொடி, banners. 9. மதில், city-walls. 1. தோரணம், festoons or other decorations. 11. நீர்க்குடம், pots full of water with other things. 12. பூமாலை, garlands. 13. சங்கு, chanks. 14. கடல், seas. 15. மகரம், the sword fish. 16. ஆமை, turtles. 17. இணைக்கயல், a pair of carp-fish. 18. சிங் கம், lions. 19. தீபம், lamps. 2. இடபம், bulls. 21. ஆசனம், the throne. இராசசூயம், s. A sacrifice performed only by a universal monarch attended by his vanquished tributary princes, ஓர்யாகம். Wils. p. 72. RAJASOOYA. இராசசேவை, s. A visit paid to a sovereign. 2. The service of a king. இராசதரிசனம், s. A visit to or sight of the king--deemed auspicious on new year's day, &c., அரசனைக்காண்கை. இராசதருமம்--இராசநீதி, s. Kingship, kingly office, இராசாதிகாரம். இராசபத்திரம், s. A royal edict, இராசகட்டளை. 2. The title of a royal grant, இராசாவினதிகாரபத்திரிகை. இராசபத்தினி, s. A queen, இரா சாவின்மனைவி. Wils. p. 71. Special wisdom, such as leads to great enterprises--considered peculiar to those of princely birth, விசேஷித்தபுத்தி. இராசமகேந்திரம், s. The name of a city. இராசமண்டலம், s. A royal congress. எங்கணுநெருங்கிச்சூழுமிராசமண்டலங்களோடும். With the royal congress which thronged every where. (பாரதம்.) இராசமனை--இராசமாளிகை, s. A royal palace. இராசமாநாகம், s. A species of venomous snake, கருவழலை. இராசமானியம், s. A royal gift of land or otherwise, a munificent grant of a king. இராஜமானியராஜஷ்ரீ, s. A title of excellence used in addressing. இராசமுத்திரை, s. A royal signet. இராசயோகம், s. A configuration of the planets, denoting the highest prosperity and honor to one born under its influence, செனனத்திற்சுபக்கோள்கள்கூடி நிற்கை. 2. One of the four yogas exercised by a sage, ஞானிக்குரியயோகநான்கிலொ ன்று. இராசராசன்--இராசாதிராசன், s. The king's ancestry or lineage, the king's relations. 2. A color mixed with white and black. இராசவல்லமை-4, s. The prerogatives of kings are four, viz.: 1. இயற் றல், making acquisitions. 2. ஈட்டல், collecting revenue. 3. காத்தல், preserving treasures. 4. பகுத்தல், distributing or expending revenue. இராசவள்ளி, s. A large, red species of yam, ஓர்வள்ளிக்கொடி. இராசவாகனம், s. A kind of palankeen used by kings, சிவிகை. இராசவாயில், s. The gate of a royal palace. இராசவிட்டூரம், s. Tyranny. இராசவிரணம், s. A large ulcer. இராசவிராசன், s. Kuvera, குபே ரன். 2. A king of kings, இராசாதிராசன். 3. Duriothana, துரியோதனன். இராசவிருட்சம், s. The கொன் றை tree, Cassia fistula, L. Wils. p. 72. The twelve signs of the zodiac are: 1. மேடம், Aries. 2. இடபம், Taurus. 3. மிதுனம், Gemini, twin daughters. 4. கர்க்கடகம், Cancer. 5. சிங்கம், Leo. 6. கன்னி, Virgo. 7. துலாம், Libra. 8. விருச்சிகம், Scorpio. 9. தனு, Sagittarius. 1. மகரம், Capricornus. 11. கும்பம், Aquarius. 12. மீனம், Pisces-Of these, six are in the northern hemisphere and are called உத்தராயணராசி, and six in the southern, named, தட்சணாயனராசி--the three first and three last are ஏறுமிராசி, ascending signs--and the intermediate, இ றங்குமிராசி, descending signs. --Note.
