aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

The eye is suddenly blinded; (lit.) broken by lightning &c. தெறிபட்டுப்போயிற்று. It has failed, come to naught. தெறிப்பான். He will burst asunder; a curse. தெறிக்கடிக்க, inf. [prop. தெறிக்கஅடி க்க.] To scatter, disperse, as an army; to beat or hammer so as to cause bursting, or to make a part fly off, to confound, to puzzle in controversy. தெறிக்கப்பேச, inf. To speak so as to offend, to break up friendship. தெறித்தவன், appel. n. A man of cruel conduct; used in cursing. தெறித்துவிழ, s. To strike on some thing in falling. 2. To burst to pieces; spoken of one who so acts as to reader himself liable to a curse. தெறிபதம், s. Spirtling of medicinal oil when boiling. தெறி, v. noun. They faced him on all sides. நாலையும்பார்த்துச்செய்யவேண்டும். One should act with due consideration of the whole matter. ஆலும்வேலும்பல்லுக்குறுதிநாலுமிரண்டுஞ்சொல்லுக் குறுதி. As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Bathing of the new married pair on the fourth day with the ends of their cloths tied together. நாலாமுறைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Quartan fever. நாலாம்வருணம், s. The Sudras; (lit.) the fourth caste, சூத்திரசாதி. நாலாயிரப்பிரபந்தம், s. Four thousand poems made by twelve ஆழ்வார்கள். நாலாவிதம், s. [also நிராஞ் சனம்.] Holding a lighted wick in water in which turmeric and lime are dissolved, and margosa leaves placed; and waving it round the idol, ஓர்ஆலாத்தி. 2. Waving lighted, sacrificial grass around ghee, and casting it into the sacred fire; (some give other definitions), சுத்திக ரிக்குமோர்சடங்கு. நீராடல், v. noun. Bathing, playing in water, ஸ்தானஞ்செய்தல். 2. A ripening cocoa-nut in which the water sounds when shaken; also நீராடற்றேங்காய். 3. One of the ten parts of juvenile poetry of the female class. See பிள்ளைத்தமிழ். நீராடற்பதம், s. That stage in the ripening of a cocoa-nut in which when shaken the water sounds. நீராட்ட, inf. To bathe another, bathe an idol, a beast, a corpse, &c., ஸ்நானஞ் செய்விக்க. நீராணிக்கன், s. One who takes care of the sluice of a public tank; used in the Congu country. நீராமைக்கட்டு, s. Hydrocele, commonly அண்டவாயு. நீர்ச்செம்பை, s. A tree, Coronilla aculiata, L. See செம்பை. நீர்ச்செறிவு, s. A collection, expanse or sheet of water as நீர்ப்பாப்பு. நீர்ச்சேம்பு, s. A plant. See சேம்பு. நீர்ச்சோறு, s. [also பழஞ்சோறு.] Boiled rice mixed with water and kept over night to be eaten in the morning. நீர்தூவுந்துருத்தி, s. [also நீர்சிதறுந்துருத் தி.] A squirt-gun, or instrument for throwing water. நீர்த்தாகம், s. Thirst, as தண்ணீர்த்தா கம். நீர்த்தாரை, s. Jet or spout of water, a conduit, &c., as சலதாரை. 2. Rainy streaks in the clouds, or from the sun after setting. See மழைத்தாரை. 3. [modeste.] membrum virile. நீர்த்தானம், s. A kind of plant, புல்லா மணக்கு, Melanthium Indica. நீர்ப்பாக்கு, s. Areca-nut steeped in water. See ஊறற்பாக்கு. நீர்ப்பாடு, v. noun. Violent diarrh&oe;a, sudden and often fatal, விஷக்கிராணி. 2. Diabetes, especially of women, நீரழிவு. 3. Drought, want of rain, நீர்க்குறைவு. (Beschi.) நீர்ப்பாடுமெய்யானாற்கௌபீனந்தாங்குமோ. Discharge of serum from a sore or of water from the eyes, mucus from the nose, &c., சீப்பாய்தல். நீர்ப்பாய்ச்சலானநாடு. A country abounding with mountain streams, rivers, rivulets, &c. நீர்ப்பாய்ச்சுமானியம், s. Land held free of tax, in whole or in part, irrigated from a public reservoir. [ Gov. usage.] நீர்ப்பிடி-நீர்ப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Quantity of water. 2. Watery humors in the body, juiciness of some kinds of fruit or vegetables. See தண்ணீர்ப்பிடி. நீர்ப்பிரமியம், s. A kind of shrub, a species of the பூல், Phyllanthus multiflorus. Willd. நீர்ப்பெருக்கு, v. noun Flow of tide, சலப்பெருக்கு. நீர்மட்டம், s. Water-level. நீர்மறிப்பு, v. noun. Stoppage of urine, நீரடைப்பு. நீர்மாங்காய், s. Managoes soaked in water, and dried, forming a kind of pickle, மாங்காயடைகாய். நீர்மீட்டான்--நீர்விட்டான், appel. n. A kind of medicinal creeper. See தண்ணீர் விட்டான். நீர்முகம், s. A ford, a place in a river for bathing, getting water, &c., இறங்கு துறை. 2. Head of the tide or current at the mouth of a river, where it flows into the sea, நீர்ப்பெருக்கின்முனை. (p.) நீர்முட்ட, inf. To make water (urine) சிறுநீர்முட்ட. (School usage.) 2. Thin watery butter-milk, with other ingredients, used as a beverage. நீர்வஞ்சி, s. A kind of ratan, ஓர்வகை ப்பிரம்பு. நீர்வண்டு, s. A water-fly. நீர்வல்லி, s. The betel-creeper, வெற் றிலைக்கொடி. நீர்வழுக்கை, s. A kind of water-plant, ஓர்நீர்ப்பூடு, Myriophyllum foliosum, L. நீர்வளம், s. Abundance of water, நீர் நிறைவு. நீர்வள்ளி, s. A medicinal creeper, தண் நீர்மீட்டான். 2. As நீர்வல்லி. நீர்வற்ற, inf. To dry up, as water, &c. நீர்வற்றம், v. noun. Ebb of tide. நீர்வற்றல், s.
