aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. The eight symptoms of disease. See பரீட்சை. அஷ்டதிக்கயம், s. The eight elephants of the cardinal points, எட்டுத்திசை யானை. See திக்கயம். அஷ்டதிக்குப்பாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, எண் டிசைப்பாலகர். See திக்குப்பாலகர். அஷ்டநாகம்--அஷ்டமாநாகம், s. The eight serpents, எண்வகைநாகம். See நாகம். அஷ்டபந்தனம், s. One of the eight forms of puja. 2. Binding the cardinal points by incantations, &c. See திக்குக்கட்டு. அஷ்டபந்தனஞ்சாத்த, inf. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. The eight laws of evidence. See பிரமாணம். அஷ்டமணம், s. The eight kinds of marriage. See மணம். அஷ்டமச்சனி--அஷ்டமத்துச்சனி, s. Saturn situated in the eighth sign from that of one's birth, when his influence is deemed the most malignant, எட்டாமிடத்துச்சனி. அஷ்டமாந்தம், s. The eight kinds of disease in children. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. The eight forms assumed by Siva, spiritual and natural, regarded as his bodies. அஷ்டமூர்த்தி, s. Siva, சிவன். See the preceding. அஷ்டமூலம், s. The eight medicinal roots. The goddess of fortune, or patroness of wordly things, எண்வகையிலக்குமி, viz. 1. தனலட்சுமி, patroness of riches. 2. தானியலட்சுமி, patroness of grain. 3. தைரியலட்சுமி, patroness of boldness. 4. சௌரியலட்சுமி, patroness of bravery. 5. வித்தியாலட்சுமி, patroness of science. 6. கீர்த்திலட்சுமி, partroness of fame. 7. விசயலட்சுமி, patroness of victory. 8. இராச்சியலட்சுமி, patroness of kingdoms. அஷ்டலோகபஸ்பம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The eight வ சுக்கள், a class of தேவர் or gods. See வசுக்கள். அஷ்டவணிககுணம், s. The eight qualities of a good tradesman. See வ ணிககுணம். அஷ்டவருக்கம், s. The eight astrological divisions of the rising sign at the time of one's birth. அஷ்டவருக்கு, s. Impr. for அஷ் டவருக்கம் in the latter meaning. அஷ்டவிகாரம், s. The eight evil dispositions of men. The art of attending to eight things or studies at once, ஒரேவேளையிலெட்டுக்காரியத்தைச் சிந்திக்கை. அஷ்டாவதானி, s. One who is skilled in the above art. அஷ்டைச்சுவரியம், s. Essentials for prosperity, or eight kinds of wealth, எண்வகைச்செல்வம். See ஐசுவரியம். 6)

arāvu (p. 23) கிறேன், அராவினேன், வேன், அராவ, v. a. [vul.] To file, polish, அழுத்த. 2. To grate as in the friction of two pieces of metal, to rub, stroke, &c., உராஞ்ச. 3. To revolve a thing in the mind, ruminate, சிந்திக்க. 4. v. n. To use sarcasm, jeers, &c. reciprocally, to be in a state of collision, to clash, disagree, jar, மிண்ட.--Note. ālōci (p. 42) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take counsel, consult, deliberate in assembly, யோசிக்க. 2. To deliberate, consider, reflect, think, சிந்திக்க. (c.)

eccil (p. 73) s. Remains, or refuse of food, crumbs, orts (deemed impure), சேஷம். 2. Any thing defiled by contact with the mouth, saliva, &c., மிச்சில்; [ex எஞ்சு.] எச்சிற்கையாற்காக்கையுமோட்டான். He will not even scare away a crow with his hand while eating, lest any grain of rice fall thereby. எச்சிலாக்க--எச்சிற்படுத்த, inf. To defile food or any thing, by bringing it into contact with the mouth; to defile food by the hand, or spoon in feeding, உச்சிட்டப்படுத்த. 2. To deflour a woman, deprive a damsel of her virginity, either by force or with consent, கன்னிமைகெடுக்க. எச்சிலார், s. Low-caste people, இழிஞர். (p.) எச்சிலிலை--எச்சிற்கல்லை, s. The leaf on which one has eaten. எச்சிலுமிய--எச்சிலுமிழ--எச்சில் துப்ப, inf. To spit. (c.) எச்சில்வாய், s. Mouth unwashed after eating, கழுவாதவாய். எச்சிற்கலக்க, inf. To eat the food left by the bridegroom--as a Hindu bride does on the occasion of her marriage. 2. To eat the food left by others--as friends. எச்சிற்கலப்பு, s. The above ceremony. எச்சிற்காறியுமிழ், inf. To force up the phlegm and spit it out. எச்சிற்கிதம்பாட, inf. To assent to what is wrong from an unworthy motive. எச்சிற்குழி, s. A cavity in a court-yard, used as a spittoon, எச்சில் போடுங்குழி. எச்சிற்பட, inf. To become defiled--as food, &c., by saliva, or contact with the mouth. எச்சிற்பருக்கை, s. Grains of rice fallen while eating, சிந்திக்கிடக்குஞ்சோறு. எச்சிற்பேய், s. A diminutive demon exceedingly voracious, ஓர்பிசாசம். 2. A person very fond of dainties, பெ ருந்தீனிக்காரன். எச்சிற்றழும்பு--எச்சிற்றேமல், s. A kind of ring-worm supposed to be induced by contact with the saliva of others, தழுதணை. எச்சின்மாற்ற, inf. To purify a place after eating by smearing it anew with cowdung. கண்ணெச்சில், s. Evil imagined to be caused by other people's eyes. கண்ணெச்சிற்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a ceremony for the removal of the imagined inauspicious effect of evil eyes. (நைட.) 25)

niṉai (p. 277) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To think, consider, reflect, யோசிக்க. 2. To meditate, contemplate, சிந்திக்க. 3. To extend, design, have in view, எண்ண. 4. To bear in mind, call or recall to mind, to remember, ஞாபகஞ்செய்ய. 5. To imagine, fancy, suppose, பாவிக்க. 6. To exert volition; to will, to purpose, தீர்மானிக்க. 7. To think upon, to design to eye with mercy, கடாட்சிக்க. 8. To be pleased, to please to do a think, &c., பிரியமுற. 9. To be grateful for, to remember with gratitude, நன் றியறிய. (c.) நினைக்கவும்ஆகும். He no sooner thinks than it is done. நினைத்தகாரியஞ்சொல்லுகிறது. To tell, as a soothsayer, &c., what one has in view and the result of his application. நினைத்ததுமுடிப்பான். He will accomplish whatever he undertakes. நினைத்துவந்துதவினார். Unsolicited, he came to my help. தாங்கள்நினைத்திருந்தநன்மையினாலேஎனக்குயாதொ ருகுறைவுமில்லை. By your kind remembrance I am free from want. அவன்நினைத்ததுசித்தித்தது. The thing occurred as he expected. நினைத்தபடி. According to thought. 2. At pleasure, according to choice. நினைத்தகாரியம், s. The thing intended, நோக்கினது. 2. The thing in veiw in consulting a soothsayer, எண்ணினது. 3. A thing wished for, or expected, விரும் பினது. நினைத்துநினைத்துப்பேச, inf. To tell by little and little, with after thoughts; sometimes retracting what was previously said; commonly in a bad sense. நினைத்துப்பார்க்க, inf. To reflect, consider, deliberate. 2. To endeaver to call to mind, to try to recollect. நினைப்பு, v. noun. Thought, idea, reflection, எண்ணம். 2. Recollection, remembrance, ஞாபகம். 3. Imagination, conception, fancy, supposition, notion, பாவனை. 4. Object, design, intention, purpose, நோக்கம். 5. Care, attention, thoughtfulness, விழிப்பு. 6. A memorandum, a memento, a memorial, நினைப்பூட் டுங்குறிப்பு. 7. Reverie, whim, freak, conceit, வீண்தோற்றம். (c.) ஒருநினைப்புக்குக்கேட்டேன். I asked it for a certain object. நினைப்பறிய, inf.
