akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. The rule for exemplifying a subject by examples. 7. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை. The rule for elucidating a circumstance by its opposite. 8. காரண or கருவியகத்திணை. Showing the condition or quality of a thing by its orginal cause. 9. காரியவகத்திணை. Proving a thing by its effects. 1. காரகவகத்திணை. The rule for relating an action, event, &c., to which belong the following:-- 1. செய்பவன், who. 2. செய்தொழில், what. 3. கருவிகள், by what helps. 4. பயன், why. 5. இடம் or நிலம், where. 6. காலம், when. 7. திறன், in what manner or how. 11. முன்னவையகத்திணை. arṇi (p. 23) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To fortify, defend, அரணாக்க. 2. To adorn, சிறப்பிக்க. (p.) 3. v. n. [in the third pers. sing.] [prov.] To grow hard as a boil, உரக்க. அரணித்தபரு, s. A hard boil. அரணிப்பு, v. noun. Being fortified place, அரண்வளைப்பு. 2. Ornament, decoration, சிறப்பிக்கை. 3. Hardness as of a boil, or other hard swelling, வைரிப்பு. 8) *

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

iṭu (p. 45) கிறேன், இட்டேன், வேன், இட, v. a. To set, put on as ornaments, தரிக்க. 2. To put in, deposit, keep, வைக்க. 3. To give, bestow, grant, devote, appropriate, ஈய. 4. To throw, case, poke out, poke or thrust into, எறிய. 5. To designate, appropriate, assign, allot, destine, dictate, விதிக்க. 6. To pour, shower, சொரிய.--As an expletive, it is joined to the gerunds of other verbs in which, it sometimes gives additional force or emphasis to the action expressed, or serves as a kind of finish, வினையெச்சத்தோடுசேர்ந்தோர்பகுதிநீர்மைத்தா ய்வருவது.--The gerund இட்டு is sometimes used to express cause, instrumentality, &c.--as, அவனையிட்டிந்தப்பழிவந்தது, this disgrace happened through him. மரத்தினிற்பறவைக்கிடுகலேபோலப்பாதகமனைத்துந் தொலைத்திடும். It will drive away every evil, as a stone thrown at birds in a tree puts them to flight. இடுகடை, s. A door or gate where much liberality is exercised, கொடுப்போனில்வாயில். (p.) இடுகறல், s. Fuel, விறகு. (நிக ண்டு.) (p.) இடுகாடு, s. A burying place, பிரே தம்புதைக்குமிடம். 2. A place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. இடுகுறி--இடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. Arbitrary names of things, primitive terms. இடுகுறிச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A specific term or primitive nouns not common to all--as தெ ங்கு, a cocoanut tree. இடுகுறிப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A generic term, or primitive common noun--as மரம், tree or trees. இடுதங்கம், s. Refined gold, gold of the best quality, புடமிடுதங்கம். 2. Gold inlaid, set, mounted, &c., கல்நகையிலுள் ளிடுதங்கம். இடுதண்டம், s. A penalty, விதிக் கப்பட்ட ஆக்கினை. 2. A penalty, fine, mulct, அநியாயதண்டம். இடுதிரை, s. A curtain, திரைச் சீலை. இடுமருந்து, s. A philter, வசமாக்க விடுமருந்து. இட்டறுதி, s. A fixed time or limit, நியமித்தவெல்லை. 2. A critical time, இரண்டுக்குற்றகாலம் 3. Destitution, extreme want, வறுமை. இட்டுக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. A connective particle variously used, ஓரிடைச்சொல். 1. எதிர்மறையும்மை, the use of உம் with an affirmative, or negative expressing probability, possibility, &c., and implying the possibility, &c., of the contrary--as, சாத்தன்வருதற்குமுரியன், Sattan may perhaps come; அவன்வரவுங்கூடும், It is possible that he may come. 2. சிறப்பும்மை, the உம் of speciality, including உயர்வுசிறப் பும்மை, or superiority and இழிவுசிறப்பும்மை, or inferiority--as, ஞானிகளுமறியார்கள்சித்திரநதிமூல ம், Even the sages are unacquainted with the source of the சித்திரம் river; இவ்வூர்ப்பூனை யும்புலாறின்னாது, Even the cats of this place will not eat flesh (so sacred is it, so vile is the practice); பார்ப்பானுங்கள்ளுண்டான், Even a Brahman has been drinking toddy; இவனைநாயுந்தேடாது, Even a dog will not regard him. 3. ஐயவும்மை, the உம் in doubt, uncertainty, indecision, equivocal forms, probability, possibility--as, அவர்பத்தாயினுந் தருவார்பதினைந்தாயினுந்தருவார், Perhaps he may give ten or he may give fifteen; மழை பெய்தாலும்பெய்யும், It may perhaps rain; பத் தானுமெட்டானுங்கொடு, Give ten, or eight, ten would be preferred, but eight may do; வரினும்வருவான், It is probable that he may come. The உம் is often suppressed. 4. எச்சவும்மை, இறந்ததுதழீஇயவெச்சவும்மை, எதிரதுதழீ இயவெச்சவும்மை, the use of உம் implying another person, thing, or event, understood, and meaning likewise, too, even--as, அவனும் வந்தான், He also is come (implying that another is come or expected); நாம்பாடவும் வேண்டும், We must sing also (as well as dance, &c.); கேட்டும்படிக்கவேண்டும், By inquiry also we must learn (as well as by other means). 5. முற்றும்பை, indicating the whole of a number or series, universality, totality--as, ஒருவருக்குமையமில்லை, None can doubt; எங்குமில்லை, no where; இருகண்ணுஞ் சிவந்தன, both eyes reddened; எவ்விடமும், every where; இரண்டையுங்கொண்டுவா, Bring them both; எல்லாரும், எவரும், ஆரும்வந்தார், all, whoever, &c. came; மிகுந்தநாலுபணத்தை யுந்தா, Give me the remaining four fanams; மூவரும், all the three persons. 6. எண்ணும் மை, a numeral connective, corresponding with, and commonly repeated with each word of the series; நீயுமவனும்வந்தீர்கள், You and he came. The particle is sometimes joined to the last only--as, சாத்தன், கொற்றன், பூதனும் வந்தார்கள், Sattan, Kottan and Poodan came. Sometimes it is wholly omitted, and a pronoun including the series used instead--as, சாத்தன்கொற்றன்இவர்கள்வந்தார்கள். Sometimes the last noun in the series is used in the plural--as, சாத்தகோற்றவர்வந்தார்கள். 7. தெரிநிலையும்மை, the உம் of ascertainment, clear perception, or decision, used of three or more things concerning which doubt has been entertained, but which is now cleared up--as, ஆணுமன்றுபெண்ணுமன்று, It is neither male nor female (but in hermaphrodite); அவருண்பதுசோறுமல்ல, பணிகாரமுமல் ல, சாகமூலபலாதிகள், His food is neither rice nor cakes, but leaves, roots and fruits, &c. 8. ஆக்கவும்மை, உம் expressive of a change of state--as, பாலுமாயிற்று, This milk became medicine also; வலியனுமாயினான், He has become even a strong man. The above eight are given in நன்னூல். 9. உம் joined to an infinitive implies விரைவு, the immediate occurrence of the event--as, துரைகட்டளையிடவுங்காரியஞ்செய்துமுடிந்தது, As soon as the magistrate gave the order, the thing was done; அவர்சொல்லவுமுலகங்களுண் டாம், As soon as he speaks worlds appear. The உம் is often omitted, but then it is less expressive--as, நானிதைச்செய்யெனச்செய்கிறான், I say this and he does it. 1. உம் added to a verbal noun in poetry, sometimes gives it a gerund-like succession of the event--as, காண்டலுமிதுவேசொல்வான், Seeing him he spoke thus; வருதலுந்தழுவிக் கொண்டான், As soon as he came he embraced. 11. உம் is associated to the social ablative with the same meaning--as, கடுங்கணைதொடுத்தலோடும், As soon as the swift arrows were shot. 12. உம் added to the infinitive serves for optative, especially in epistolary usage but not in good style--as, தாங்கள்மறுமொழியனுப்பவும், May you please to send an answer; இப்படிச்செய்யவும், May you do so, I wish you to do so. 13. உம் added to the following forms of a verb, செய்து, செய்யின், செய்தால், has the force of though, although--as, அவனறிந்தும்வரவில்லை. Though he knew, he did not come; சொல்லி னும் or சொன்னாலும்அவன்கேளான், Though you may tell him he will not listen. 14. உம் added to இல் or இன் forms of the fifth case gives the force of the comparative degree --as, கந்தனினும்வலியனே, He is even stronger than Skanda. 15. A token of reproof, menace, anger, &c., also of attention, assent, doubt, non-compliance, &c., (see ஊம்)--as, உம்மெனத்தெழித்துரப்ப, He reproved his rashness by uttering the menacing sound உம் (ஸ்காந்தம்); கதைசொல்லுகி றேன்உம்கொட்டிக்கேள், I am going to tell you a story, show that you listen by saying உம்; உம்மெனுமார்பைத்தட்டும், The guilt of Brahmanicide manifested in a phantom threatened by saying உம் and striking on its breast (திருவிளையாடல்). 16. A termination of the imperative plural, முன்னிலைப்பன்மைவி குதி-- as, நீவிர்சொல்லும், say ye. It is often used honorifically in imperative singular --as, கடவுளேநீரிரங்கும், God be merciful. 17. A termination of verbs third pers. pres. or fut. tense sing. number, also of neut. plurals--as அவன்செய்யும், He does or will do it; சிங்கங்கள்முழங்கும், The lions roar, or will roar, செய்யுமென்முற்றுவிகுதி. 18. A modification of the pronoun நீர் when it is declined in the different cases--as, உம்மை, உம் மால், &c. 19. The termination of the future relative participle, எதிர்காலப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as, உலகாளும்அரசர், Kings who govern the world. 2)

eṭṭu (p. 73) s. The number eight denoted by அ, ஓரெண். 2. The eighth day funeral ceremony when food is presented to the manes of a deceased person, இறந்தஎட்டாம் நாட்சடங்கு; it is often contracted to எண். 3. Desire, ஆசை, impr. for எட்டை. எட்டிலேபத்திலே. Seldom, now and then. எட்டுக்குச்சோறிட்டுவைக்க. [prov.] To set rice, curry and other eatables for the deceased in the eighth day ceremony--as எட்டாந்துக்கங்கொண்டாட. எட்டுமிரண்டுமறியாதவன். A very dolt, an ignoramus. எட்டடிவிரியன், s. A kind of viper. எட்டனுருபு, s. The form of the eighth or vocative case. எட்டிலொன்று, s. One of eight things, one-eighth. எட்டுச்சார், s. [prov.] Two four square houses connected together. எட்டுத்திக்கு--எண்டிசை, s. The eight cardinal points or regions protected by as many supernal regents the supposed guardians of the earth. எட்டெட்டு--எவ்வெட்டு. Eight by eight-eight to each, eight of each. When used adjectively, எட்டு becomes எண்--as எண்ணெட்டு, eight times eight. எண்கணன், s. Brahma the eighteyed, பிரமன். எண்காற்புள், s. [in mythology.] The eight-footed bird. See சரபம், சம்பரம் and சிம்புள். எண்குணம், s. The eight divine attributes. See குணம். எண்குணத்தான்--எண்குணன், s. He who possesses the eight attributes-the perfect one--a term applied in நிகண் டு, to Siva, சிவன், Argha, அருகன். எண்கோணம், s. An octagon, eight-sided figure, அஷ்டகோணம். எண்சாண், s. Eight spans. எண்சாணுடம்பு, s. The human body, eight spans high, each person according to his own span. எண்சாணுடம்புக்குஞ்சிரசேபிரதானம். The head is the chief of the eight span-body; i. e. in cases of difficulty apply to the chief. எண்சிறப்புள்ளோன், s. Argha, அருகன். எண்சுவை, s. The eight poetic expressions of passion. See இரசம். எண்டோளன், s. Siva, சிவன்-the eight shouldered. (p.) எண்டோளி, s. Kali, காளி. 2. Durga, துர்க்கை. (p.) எண்ணாயிரம், s. Eight thousand. எண்ணாயிரவர், s. A class of smartha brahmans consisting of eight-thousand individuals. 2. A body of eightthousand jainas. எண்ணான்கு, s. Eight times four. எண்ணூறு, s. Eight hundred. எண்ணெட்டு, s. [prov.] Eight times eight. எண்பது, s. Eighty, எண்ணொரு பது. எண்மடங்கு, s. Eight fold. எண்மர், s. Eight persons, எட்டு ப்பேர். (p.) எண்வகைத்துணைவர், s. The eight classes composing the escort of a king; i. e. மந்திரியர், கருமாதிகாரர், சுற்றம், கடைகாப் பாளர், நகரமாக்கள் படைத்தலைவர், இவுளிமறவர், யானைவீரர். 36)

etukai (p. 73) s. Initial rhyme, commonly occurring in the second letter of every line in the stanza. (See தொடை.) 2. [vul.] (fig.) Agreement, union, consonance, similarity, பொருத்தம். (p.) தலையாகெதுகை, s. In rhyme, similarity of the first class in which all the letters except the initial of the first foot in each line through the stanza are the same--as சொற்போர்புரிவர்நான்மறை யாறங்கமுணர்ந்ததொழுகுலத்தோர், விற்போர்புரிவர் நெடியசிலையிராமனனையவிறல்வேந்தர், பொற்போர் புரிவர் பிறர்பொருளுந்தம்போற் பேணிப்புரிவணிகர், நெற்போர்புரிவரந்நகரில்வேளாண்குலத்து நெறியி னரே. இடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of a medial kind in which the second letter only ryhmes--as அகரமுதலவெழுத் தெல்லாமாதி, பகவன்முதற்றேயுலகு. கடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of an inferior order including every kind except the two given above. ஆசெதுகை, s. An exception to the general rule of எதுகை; i. e. when the second letter of the first line is ய, ர, ல, or ழ, it may be omitted in the following lines when necessary. வழியெதுகை, s. The agreement of the second and third letters in the first, second, and sometimes the third feet in every line through the stanza. நெடிலெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the long consonants in a poem--as ஆவாவென்றேயஞ்சினராழ்ந்தாரொருசாரார், கூகூ வென்றேகூவிளிகொண்டாரொருசாரார், மாமாவென் றேமாய்ந்தனர்நீந்தாரொருசாரார், ஏகீர்நாகீரென்செய் துமென்றாரொருசாரார். இனவெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the same class of consonants in a poem. It consists of three kinds: 1. வல்லின வெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the வல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். தக்கார்தகவிலரென்பதவரவ ரெச்சத்தாற்காணப்படும். 2. மெல்லினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the மெல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். அன்பீனுமார்வமுடைமையதுவீனுநண்பென் னுநாடாச்சிறப்பு. 3. இடையினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the இடையினம் consonants, உ-ம். எல்லா விளக்கும் விளக்கல்ல சான்றோர்க்குப் பொய்யாவிளக்கேவிளக்கு. 51) *

oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. See தளை. ஒன்றார்--ஒன்னாதார்--ஒன்னார், s. Foes, unfriendly persons. (p.) ஒன்றுகுடி, s. A family or person living in another's house, garden, &c. See ஒட்டுக்குடி and ஒதுக்குக்குடி. ஒன்றுகூட்டு, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

(p.) கடிகெழுபரிதியைக்கரங்குவித்தபின். After worshipping with folded hands the bright sun-கடிமதுநுகர்ந்தோர். Those who drink liquors which cause them to be merry-கடிமிளகுதின்றகல்லாமந்தி. The cry, screech, or chirp of certain birds, &c., considered ominous, ஆந்தை கெ வுளி முதலியவைகளின் ஒலி. காதற்சிறப்புரைத்தல், v. noun. Expression of warm desire or love, as of a lover to his mistress, ஆசை மிகுதியைச் சொல்லல். (p.) காதற்பரத்தை, s. A kept mistress, being the daughter of a சேரிப்பரத்தை. ஆந்தைக்காதல், s.
