iṭu (p. 45) கிறேன், இட்டேன், வேன், இட, v. a. To set, put on as ornaments, தரிக்க. 2. To put in, deposit, keep, வைக்க. 3. To give, bestow, grant, devote, appropriate, ஈய. 4. To throw, case, poke out, poke or thrust into, எறிய. 5. To designate, appropriate, assign, allot, destine, dictate, விதிக்க. 6. To pour, shower, சொரிய.--As an expletive, it is joined to the gerunds of other verbs in which, it sometimes gives additional force or emphasis to the action expressed, or serves as a kind of finish, வினையெச்சத்தோடுசேர்ந்தோர்பகுதிநீர்மைத்தா ய்வருவது.--The gerund இட்டு is sometimes used to express cause, instrumentality, &c.--as, அவனையிட்டிந்தப்பழிவந்தது, this disgrace happened through him. மரத்தினிற்பறவைக்கிடுகலேபோலப்பாதகமனைத்துந் தொலைத்திடும். It will drive away every evil, as a stone thrown at birds in a tree puts them to flight. இடுகடை, s. A door or gate where much liberality is exercised, கொடுப்போனில்வாயில். (p.) இடுகறல், s. Fuel, விறகு. (நிக ண்டு.) (p.) இடுகாடு, s. A burying place, பிரே தம்புதைக்குமிடம். 2. A place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. இடுகுறி--இடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. Arbitrary names of things, primitive terms. இடுகுறிச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A specific term or primitive nouns not common to all--as தெ ங்கு, a cocoanut tree. இடுகுறிப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A generic term, or primitive common noun--as மரம், tree or trees. இடுதங்கம், s. Refined gold, gold of the best quality, புடமிடுதங்கம். 2. Gold inlaid, set, mounted, &c., கல்நகையிலுள் ளிடுதங்கம். இடுதண்டம், s. A penalty, விதிக் கப்பட்ட ஆக்கினை. 2. A penalty, fine, mulct, அநியாயதண்டம். இடுதிரை, s. A curtain, திரைச் சீலை. இடுமருந்து, s. A philter, வசமாக்க விடுமருந்து. இட்டறுதி, s. A fixed time or limit, நியமித்தவெல்லை. 2. A critical time, இரண்டுக்குற்றகாலம் 3. Destitution, extreme want, வறுமை. இட்டுக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. kārṇm (p. 104) s. Cause, origin, source, தோற்றத்துக்கு மூலம். 2. Principle, essential element, மூலம். 3. Instrument or means, கருவி. 4. [in logic.] Cause, reason, the ground of an assertion or argument, ஏது. occasion, நோக்கம். Wils. p. 213. KARANA. 6. One of the twenty-eight Agamas, ஆகமம் இருபத்தெட்டிலொன்று. According to the Hindu Philosophy, காரணம் is three fold, viz.: முத ற்காரணம், துணைக்காரணம், நிமித்தகாரணம், முத ற்காரணம், material, proximate cause--as clay from which pottery is made, or the primitive Maya out of which the universe was produced. துணைக்காரணம், secondary, instrumental, or co-efficient cause--as the wheel used by a potter, or the Sakti (energy) of the god Siva. நிமித்தகாரணம், the efficient cause or the agent--as the potter, in the manufacture of wares, or the god Siva in the production of worlds. சர்வத்துக்குமாதிகாரணமானவர். The first cause or creator of all things. காரணகர்த்தா--காரணகடவுள் s. The Supreme Being--the Chief Agent in all things, முதற்கடவுள். 2. Any supposed miracle-working deity, அற்புத கடவுள். காரணகாட்சி, s. Demonstration 'a priori', or from an axiom. Rott. 2. A pleasing and marvellous sight. காரணகாரியம், s. Cause and effect, காரமுங்காரியமும். காரணகுரு, s. A guru whose sole object is the spiritual benefit of his disciples, மெய்க்குரு--opposed to கரியகுரு. காரணக்குறி, s. [in gram.] Derived names or appellatives, as one of the classes of nouns--opposed to இடுகுறி,கார ணப்பெயர். 2. Presage, omen, prognostic, a sign showing beforehand what is to happen, முன்னறிகுறி. காரணங்காட்ட, inf. To affirm a cause, to ascribe or show reasons, ஏதுகாட்ட. காரணகேவலம், s. Absolute unconsciousness of the soul during its involution in காரணமாயை. It is one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசகலம், s. Conscious state of the soul during its manifestation in the world, and consequent subjection to births and deaths; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசரீரம், s. The most subtile embryo of the body, as originally and eternally existing with the soul. (See சரீரத்திரயம்.) In the Vedantic philosophy, the original principle of spiritual ignorance, in which the soul is enveloped during the period of its non-absorption in Brahm. காரணசுத்தம், s. Complete liberation from பாசம், and the attainment of perfect purity and happiness; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names limited in their application--as முடி, a crown so called because it is put on முடி, the head, ஒன் றற்குரியகாரணப்்பெயர். காரணச்சொல், s. A story, a narrative, கதை. (p.) 2. A derived word. காரணப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derivative names. காரணப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names extending to various classes--as அணி, jewel; so called because it embraces various kinds of jewels, which are worn, பலவற்றிற்குரியகார ணப்பெயர். காரணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be the author of the thing. காரணமாயை, s. Maya as the primitive, original substance from which all the manifestations of matter and spirit are evolved, and into which they are again resolved at the destruction of the universe, அகிலத்துக்கும் வித்தானமாயை. see மாயை. காரணமுகாந்திரம், s. Motive. காரணவணு, s. According to some atheistical schools, primitive or original atoms, by the fortuitous combination of which, the worlds were originated. காரணவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the cause is, by the way of metonymy, used for the effect--as in திருவாசகம். காரணவிசேஷம், s. Chief or principal things. (p.) காரணவிடுகுறி, s. A name which, though given originally as descriptive of a class of objects, is applied to individuals of the class, though destitute of the qualities which it describes--as மறவன், கறங்கு. காரணவிலக்கணை, s. [in rhetoric.] Metonymy of a cause for the effect. காரணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Negation of effects from the absence of a cause, ஓரலங்காரம். காரணன், s. The first cause, நிமித்தன். 2. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 3. Any deity supposed to work miracles, அற் புதகடவுள். 4. A king, அரசன். 5. The name of a kind of arsenic, மிரதபாஷாணம். காரணாவத்தை--காரணாவஸ்தை, s. The three principal, causative states or அவத் தை of the soul--கேவலம், சகலம் and சுத்தம், --as distinguished from காரியாவத்தை. காரணானுமானம், s. Auspiciousness, propitiousness, prosperity, சுபம். 12. Classical beauty, புலமைச்சிறப்பு. ஊணுடையெச்சமுயிர்க்கெல்லாம் வேறலல நாணு டைமாந்தர்சிறப்பு. Food, dress, &c., are common to men, but modesty is peculiar to the good. (குற) சிறப்பகத்திணை, s. Reflection, discrimination, as a faculty of the mind distinct from perception by the senses; [ex அகத்திணை.] See திணை. சிறப்பிலாதாள், s. The goddess of illluck, மூதேவி; [ex இலாதாள்.] (நிக.) சிறப்புச்சூத்திரம், s. Special or particular rules in scientific, or literary works as distinguished from general rules. சிறப்புச்செய்ய--சிறப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To beautify, to adorn. 2. To show civilities, உபசரிக்க. 3. [prov.] To celebrate a temple festival. சிறப்புச்சொல், s. A specific word, not generic. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், s. A special preface --distinguished from பொதுப்பாயிரம். சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. Particular, proper, specific or special names--opposed to பொதுப்பெயர். 2. Official or acquired names, titles of rank, &c.--Note. சிறப்புப் பெயர் is derived from eight sources as-திணை, a track--as குறவன், a mountainer. 2. நிலம், country--as சீனன், Chinese. 3. சாதி, caste--as அம்பட்டன், the barber. 4. குடி, family--as சேரன், the (royal) Seran. 5. உடைமை, possession--as உடையன், the possessor. 6. பொருள், property, as பொன் னன், the possessor of gold. 7. குணம், quality--as பெரியன், the great one. 8. கல்வி, learning--as ஆசிரியன், a teacher. சிறப்புவிதி, s. A specific rule. சிறப்பெடுக்க, inf. To solemnize a temple festival, திருவிழாக்கொண்டாட. (p.) சிறப்பெழுத்து, s. tōy (p. 264) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், தோய, v. n. To plunge in water, நீரில்மூழ்க. 2. To bathe, commonly in cold water, and without anointing, குளிக்க. 3. To become wet, soaked, sopped, steeped, நனைய. 4. To mix, to blend, mingle, to commingle, to unite with, as in company, கலக்க. 5. To touch to come in contact with, to be trailed on the ground as a garment or tail, நிலத்திற் பதிய. To be curdled, as milk by design, உறைய. 9. To commit one's self in speaking, commonly in the negative, அகப்பட்டுக் கொள்ள. 1. v. a. [prov.] To temper heated metal, by dipping it in water, துவைச்சலிட. (c.) நச்செழுத்துத்தோயப்பாடினான். He has tempered his verses with malign letters. தோயாமற்பேச, inf. To speak in ambiguous terms, so as not to commit one's self, or divulge a secret. (c.) தோயப்பம், s. A pan-cake, தோசை. தோயல்--தோய்வு, v. noun. Mixing, கலத்தல். 2. Bathing, dipping, குளித்தல். 3. As துவையல், which see. தோயல்வாய்த்தல், v. noun. Preface is of two kinds. -- I. பொதுப்பாயிரம். a general preface, of which there are five particulars: நூற்றிறன், the properties and characteristics of classical writing; 2. நூவல்வோன்திறன், the character of the teacher, and his ability and aptitude to teach; 3. நுவலுந்திறன், the mode of teaching, system of imparting education; 4. கொள்வோன்றிறன், the qualifications of the student; 5. கோடற்றிறன், the method of pursuing his studies. II. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், a preface relating only to the book to which it is prefixed; in which are eleven particulars--ஆக்கியோன்பெயர், the name of the author; 2. வழி, the origin of the work; 3. எல்லை, the country wherein it is used; 4. நூற்பெயர், the name of the book; 5. யாப்பு, its merit, and the position it holds in the list of works; 6.நுதலியபொருள், the subjects treated; 7. கேட்போர், students fit to study it; 8. பயன், advantages to the learner; 9. காலம், the time when it was written; 1. களம், the assembly who sanctioned it; 11. காரணம், the motive which led to its being published. செறுமனத்தார்பாயிரங்கூறி. potu (p. 336) s. That which is shared by many, சாதாரணம். 2. The genus in distinction from the species, பொதுவினம். 3. A public assembly, சபை. 4. What is public, general, ordinary, usual, வழக்கம். (c.) எல்லாநோய்க்கும்பொதுமருந்து. A physic for all diseases, a panacea. பொதுக்கட்டுதல், v. noun. Sequestrating, taking from both parties. 2. Depositing by mutual consent, as in Panchayat. பொதுக்கட்டியிருக்கிறது. It is deposited until an award is issued. பொதுக்காரியம், s. A common or public affair. பொதுக்குணம்--பொதுத்தன்மை, s. An indefinite color between red and black; spoken of persons. பொதுப்பட, inf. [as adv.] Generally commonly. பொதுப்படப்பேசினான். He spoke without particularizing any one. பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Nouns common to both திணை, and two or more பால்--opposed to சிறப்புப்பெயர். பொதுப்பேச்சு, s. General speech, language not definite, not minute. 2. Ambiguous talk. பொதுமனிதன்--பொதுவன், s.
