That which is specific--as opposed to the generic (பொது), சிறப்புப்பெயர். 6. Choiceness, rareness, அருமை. 7. Pre-eminence, transcendency, மேம்பாடு. 8. A sacred periodical festival, a temple procession, &c., உற்சவம். 9. Civilities to guests, etiquette, உபசாரம். 1, Abundance, plenty, copiousness, intensity, excess, மிகுதி. 11. Auspiciousness, propitiousness, prosperity, சுபம். 12. Classical beauty, புலமைச்சிறப்பு. ஊணுடையெச்சமுயிர்க்கெல்லாம் வேறலல நாணு டைமாந்தர்சிறப்பு. Food, dress, &c., are common to men, but modesty is peculiar to the good. (குற) சிறப்பகத்திணை, s. Reflection, discrimination, as a faculty of the mind distinct from perception by the senses; [ex அகத்திணை.] See திணை. சிறப்பிலாதாள், s. The goddess of illluck, மூதேவி; [ex இலாதாள்.] (நிக.) சிறப்புச்சூத்திரம், s. Special or particular rules in scientific, or literary works as distinguished from general rules. சிறப்புச்செய்ய--சிறப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To beautify, to adorn. 2. To show civilities, உபசரிக்க. 3. [prov.] To celebrate a temple festival. சிறப்புச்சொல், s. A specific word, not generic. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், s. A special preface --distinguished from பொதுப்பாயிரம். சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. Particular, proper, specific or special names--opposed to பொதுப்பெயர். 2. Official or acquired names, titles of rank, &c.--Note. சிறப்புப் பெயர் is derived from eight sources as-திணை, a track--as குறவன், a mountainer. 2. நிலம், country--as சீனன், Chinese. 3. சாதி, caste--as அம்பட்டன், the barber. 4. குடி, family--as சேரன், the (royal) Seran. 5. உடைமை, possession--as உடையன், the possessor. 6. பொருள், property, as பொன் னன், the possessor of gold. 7. குணம், quality--as பெரியன், the great one. 8. கல்வி, learning--as ஆசிரியன், a teacher. சிறப்புவிதி, s. A specific rule. சிறப்பெடுக்க, inf. To solemnize a temple festival, திருவிழாக்கொண்டாட. (p.) சிறப்பெழுத்து, s. Letters in Tamil which have no corresponding letters in Sanscrit, viz.: எ, ஒ, ழ, ற, ன, ஃ, ஒற்றளபு, and some others. 2. Sanscrit letters that have none exactly corresponding with them in Tamil. 27)

Preface is of two kinds. -- I. பொதுப்பாயிரம். a general preface, of which there are five particulars: நூற்றிறன், the properties and characteristics of classical writing; 2. நூவல்வோன்திறன், the character of the teacher, and his ability and aptitude to teach; 3. நுவலுந்திறன், the mode of teaching, system of imparting education; 4. கொள்வோன்றிறன், the qualifications of the student; 5. கோடற்றிறன், the method of pursuing his studies. II. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், a preface relating only to the book to which it is prefixed; in which are eleven particulars--ஆக்கியோன்பெயர், the name of the author; 2. வழி, the origin of the work; 3. எல்லை, the country wherein it is used; 4. நூற்பெயர், the name of the book; 5. யாப்பு, its merit, and the position it holds in the list of works; 6.நுதலியபொருள், the subjects treated; 7. கேட்போர், students fit to study it; 8. பயன், advantages to the learner; 9. காலம், the time when it was written; 1. களம், the assembly who sanctioned it; 11. காரணம், the motive which led to its being published. செறுமனத்தார்பாயிரங்கூறி.
