காவல்
kāvl (p. 105) s. Defence, protection, preservation, support, keeping, காப்பு. 2. Guard, restraint, அரண். (p.) 3. Surrounding wall, fortification, மதில். 4. A prison, a ward, hold, சிறைச்சாலை; [ex கா.] காவல்தானே பாவையர்க்கழகு. Chastity becomes a woman. காவலன், s. A protector, a guardian, காப்போன். 2. A king, அரசன். 3. A husband, கணவன். 4. One of a king's bodyguard, மெய்க்காப்பாளன். காவலாளர், s. Watchmen, sentinels, watchers, guards, காப்போர். காவலாளி, s. A keeper, a guard, காப் போன்.--Note. In Tinnevelly, this word is invariably used to signify a prisoner and not a watchman, which latter is called காவற்காரன். காவலிருக்க, inf. To be on guard, to keep watch, காவலாயிருக்க. 2. To wait or look, as for a person expected. காவலிலிருக்க, inf. To be in prison or captivity. காவலிலேபோட--காவலில்வைக்க, inf. To imprison. 2. To keep in the patrolhut till morning--as a person found straying during night. காவல்கட்டு, s. A strong guard. 2. Secure protection. 3. Rigid restraint. காவல்கட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To set a strong guard. 2. To watch closely. 3. To keep young people, &c., in close restraint. 4. [prov.] To attend strictly to the diet of a sick person. காவல்காக்க, inf. To watch, guard, protect. 2. To be on guard, to act as sentries, watchmen, &c. 3. To defend the body by wearing armor, &c., or the head by oils, &c., against disease, which either has attacked the lower extremities, or indicates coma, &c. காவல்செய்ய, inf. To protect, to defend. 2. [prov.] To pass a straw-rope over a heap of corn in the field, or make with it diagrams on the ground, &c., to defend the grain from demons. 3. To place an image of Ganesa (being a handful of moist cow-dung) on the top of a heap of corn before winnowing, as a security from demons.--Note. If it is measured, it is deemed secure against their attack. காவல்பண்ண, inf. To protect, defend, take care of, watch over. 2. To nourish, cherish, provide for. 3. To imprison, to keep under guard, to confine. காவல்மாற, inf. To be relived, changed, &c.--as sentinels or a watch. காவல்மாற்ற, inf. To relieve guard, change watchmen, sentinels, &c. காவல்முறை, s. Turns in watching. காவல்மேரை, s. Share of grain given to the watchman of a village from the thrashing floor. காவல்விட, inf. To release from watching, guarding, &c. காவற்கடவுள்--காவற்பெருமான், s. Vishnu, as the preserver of the world, விஷ்ணு. காவற்கட்டு, s. [prov.] A bundle of paddy sheaves for the watchman. காவற்கட்டை, s. [prov.] A fire-brand kept burning to ward off the female demon கொற்றி from a woman in child-birth, when exposure is greater than at other times. 2. A clump of wood kept burning through the night near a patrol-hut. காவற்கப்பல், s. A reconnoitring vessel, a guard-ship. காவற்காடு, s. A jungle or forest defence, காட்டாண். 2. A reserved forest. காவற்காரர், s. Watchmen, sentinels, a patrol, காப்போர். காவற்கூடம்--காவற்சாலை--காவல்ஸ்த லம், s. A guard-room; a prison-house. காவற்புரி, s. [prov.] A straw-rope thrown over the heap of corn in the field to defend it from demons. அருங்காவல், s. A very strict or powerful guard. தலைக்காவல், s. The main guard. தூக்கிரிக்காவல், s. An overseer of a village. மெல்லுயிர்க்குங்காவல், s. A support or cordial to the languishing mind. 28)

A prison, jail, place of confinement, a dungeon, சிறைச்சாலை. 6. A hole, hollow, cavity, குழி. அரிசிக்கிடங்கு, s. A store-room for rice, rice-godown.
சாலை
cālai (p. 180) The principal room of a house, a hall, கூடம். 2. An avenue among trees; a vista; a public road shaded by trees, மரச் சாலை. (c.) 3. W. p. 839. S'ALA. A large building or room for public purposes, a house, a hall, a theatre, &c., சபைகூடுமிடம். 4. A royal palace, அரமனை. 5. A hermitage, or place where austerities are practised, தவச்சாலை. 6. An alms-house, or place where benevolent acts are performed, அறத்தின்சாலை. 7. A stable, குதிரைச்சாலை. --Note. The word takes its meaning as a place, or road from that with which it is combined. சாலைக்கரை, s. The vicinity or border of a road. சாலைப்பாதை--சாலைமார்க்கம், s. A road with shade-trees on each side. சாலைவைக்க, inf. To make an avenue. கல்விச்சாலை, s. A school-house, a place for learning. See கல்வி. கூட்டச்சாலை, s. A public road shaded with thick trees. சிறைச்சாலை, s. A prison, a jail. பண்டசாலை, s. A store house for grain, &c. See பண்டம். ஆயுதசாலை, s. An arsenal, an armory. யாகசாலை, s. A place of sacrifice. 14) *

cēmam (p. 208) s. (also க்ஷேமம்.) Preserving, protection, safety, preservation, காவல். 2. Safeguard, defence, security, தஞ்சம். 3. Hoard, treasure buried, things reserved, புதைபொருள் 4. Binding and shrouding a corpse for burning or interment, சவச்சேமம். 5. (c.) Happiness, well-being, welfare, இன்பம். 6. A secure place, a room, well guarded, அரணானவிடம். 7. A prison, cage, dungeon, or subterraneous prison, காராக் கிரகம். 8. A guard-house, சிறைச்சாலை. சேமம்புகினுஞ்சாமத்துறங்கு. Though you are in a prison sleep only three hours. சேமக்காரன், s.
